There’s been talk (and apparent leaks) of a mid-range Pixel 3 variant, but what about an equivalent to the larger Pixel 3 XL? That might be coming too. OnLeaks and 91mobiles claim to have details of a Pixel 3 ‘Lite’ XL (just a placeholder name for now), and have produced renders to match. The larger handset would move up to a 6-inch, 2,220 x 1,080 screen (versus the 6.3-inch, 2,960 x 1,440 panel on the Pixel 3 XL) but would otherwise resemble its smaller counterpart, including the plastic chassis. And notably, that would mean dropping the regular Pixel 3 XL’s notch — you’d ‘only’ have one front camera, but you also wouldn’t have a conspicuous protrusion into your screen.

The other specifications of the larger ‘Lite’ phone aren’t clear, although they’re expected to be similar to the regular version. If so, you’d get a reasonably speedy Snapdragon 670, 4GB of RAM, a 12-megapixel rear camera, an 8-megapixel selfie shooter and 32GB of base storage. And yes, the parity would mean the inclusion of a headphone jack at the top.

It’s not certain when the bigger handset would arrive (provided the leaks are accurate), although it would likely ship alongside the more diminutive version. There’s little doubt that cost would be the main selling point, though. When the existing Pixel 3 XL starts at $ 899, it’s a tough sell to some customers. A mid-tier version still wouldn’t be a trivial purchase, but it’d be more palpable to phone fans who just want Google’s Android experience on a reasonably large display.

  • Swetnick’s attorney Michael Avenatti tweeted another sworn declaration from a witness, whose name was redacted in the documents, backing up Swetnick’s allegations against Kavanaugh and Judge. 

Two witnesses have submitted sworn statements regarding Julie Swetnick’s allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and his friend Mark Judge as the FBI supplemental background investigation into Kavanaugh is reported to be drawing to a close. 

Dennis Ketterer, a former weeknight meteorologist for Channel 7 in Washington DC, submitted a 4-page statement to the Senate Judiciary Committee stating he had an extramarital affair with Swetnick in the early 1990s, and did not find her allegations against Kavanaugh and Judge to be credible based on his experience with her.

While Google employees push back against and lawmakers ask questions about a rumored version of its search engine for China — with censorship and blacklists for terms like human rights, democracy or protest built-in — The Intercept revealed more details about how it might actually work. According to its sources, a “Dragonfly” prototype was built that worked similar to many online services in China, with an Android app that linked search activity to a phone number.

The Chinese government has pushed for services like WeChat and Weibo to tie ID cards or phone numbers to their accounts before, while also attempting to make sure the large mobile carriers only sell SIMs to customers under their real names. Still, a Human Rights Watch member points out that linking search activity could make it that much harder for anyone to avoid government surveillance.

Also mentioned is the idea that it would operate as a joint venture with a company in China, and host its data on servers there that leads some to worry it could be accessed by the authorities. Finally, there’s a rumored customization for the source of weather and air pollution data, which The Intercept said has been manipulated before by the government.

Alec Baldwin is joining the DC cinematic universe.

According to a new report, the Oscar-nominated actor will play Thomas Wayne, Batman’s father, in the upcoming Joker film for director Todd Phillips (The Hangover). Read more about Baldwin’s newest role below.

Deadline has the news about Baldwin joining the Joker movie cast, although the outlet says that Warner Bros. has not confirmed which role he will play. The Wrap, however, is confident in saying that Baldwin will play Thomas Wayne, the wealthy industrialist who, along with his wife Martha, is murdered in the streets in front of young Bruce Wayne after leaving a theater.

Batman has appeared on screen so many times over the years that the death of Thomas and Martha Wayne has almost become something of a check-box that filmmakers decided to tick, though there’s rarely an actual need to show their deaths on screen. We all know who Batman is – he has one of the most famous origin stories of any character ever created, in any medium. It’s unclear if Joker is going to add its own “Thomas and Martha get murdered” scene to the DC movies pantheon since this film is supposed to be an origin story about the Clown Prince of Crime, but I’m guessing we’ll see them die once again here. In an age where mass shootings are depressingly common, perhaps Phillips will be able to imbue the scene with an extra level of meaning.

Joaquin Phoenix stars as the title character who goes from a failed comedian to the Clown Prince of Crime in this 1980s-set drama that takes its inspiration from the famous one-off comic The Killing Joke. Phillips (Old School, War Dogs) is directing, and Martin Scorsese is executive producing. Robert De Niro is on board to play a talk show host who is instrumental in the Joker’s origin, which sounds like he’s flipping the script on his starring role in Scorsese’s 1983 movie The King of Comedy. Marc Maron (GLOW) is playing a booking agent for De Niro’s character’s talk show. Frances Conroy (Six Feet Under, The Tale) is set to play the Joker’s mother, Penny, while Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2, Atlanta) is playing a single mother who catches the Joker’s eye.

Alec Baldwin has made tons of headlines for his recent impression of Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live (which I personally think is some of the worst comedic work of his career), but he’s more than capable of playing a truly great and memorable scumbag, too. This take on the movie – a dark, mid-budget crime drama set in the gritty underbelly of Gotham in the ’80s – sounds like there’s plenty of room for Baldwin to play a larger-than-life character who fits perfectly in that world. This is also a bit of full-circle casting, since Baldwin was one of the actors originally considered to play Batman in Tim Burton’s 1989 movie.

Production begins in just a few weeks (September 10), and Joker will hit theaters on October 4, 2019.

Rumor has it that a Wreck-It Ralph attraction is under development at the Magic Kingdom to replace the unpopular yet tenacious Stitch’s Great Escape in Tomorrowland. As construction work revs up on the park’s new Tron-themed, coaster-style attraction — which is being built next to Space Mountain in Tomorrowland — the Magic Kingdom has also unveiled a neat new Tron billboard while announcing some modifications to the Walt Disney World Railroad and Tomorrowland Speedway.

The last thing Star Tours needs is double-booked Starspeeders. Fortunately, as you can see from the tweet above, it just got easier for Cast Members to do a headcount on guests waiting in line for the attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Sebastian’s Bistro has been confirmed as the new name of the restaurant formerly known as Shutters at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort.

Some sad news this week as Scott Watson, the chief technology officer for Walt Disney Imagineering, has died in a small plane crash.

Splash Mountain is now getting its own Funko Pop! Rides figure. The figure depicts Br’er Rabbit and Br’er Bear on one of the ride’s log flumes. A limited supply will be available in select locations at both Disney World and Disneyland Resort.

No sooner did we see some fresh concept art and plans for Disneyland Resort’s proposed new luxury hotel than the news broke this week that the plans have been halted due to a battle over tax breaks with the city of Anaheim. On August 16, Universal’s Aventura Hotel celebrated its grand opening at Universal Orlando Resort. You can take a video tour of the new hotel above and the Universal Orlando blog also has a breakdown of the hotel’s perks, such as its views of Volcano Bay, Islands of Adventure, and Universal Studios Florida. This might be a good place to stay if you’re headed to Halloween Horror Nights for its Halloween 4 mazes.

August 16 was also National Roller Coaster Day in the U.S. and if you weren’t already thinking of moving to Canada, now you might have some extra incentive. In 2019, a theme park called Wonderland outside Toronto is set to debut the Yukon Striker, “the longest, fastest and tallest dive roller coaster in the world.”

Finally, as of this week, it’s been a year since my personal favorite Disney ride, The Great Movie Ride, closed forever. Life goes on, however, and the Chinese Theater now has construction walls up around it at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. This time next year, guests might already be experiencing the new attraction Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, which is slated to open in the Chinese Theater sometime in 2019.

With just two BMW i cars currently available — and aging — we’ve been hankering to know what new EVs are coming down the pipeline for the Bavarian automaker. We’ve had news of the iNext and i4, caught wind of an iX3, and as BMW is in the early stages of a large electrification push, there has been a multitude of “i”-prefaced trademarks registered. The next we can expect, if the rumors from Spanish outlet Motor.esare to be believed, will be a diminutive i1 EV, based on the same platform as an upcoming electric Mini Cooper.

As such, it would share the electric Mini’s front-drive/front-motor configuration — previewed on the Mini Electric Concept, shown above, that debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show last year.

It stands to reason that the i1 would be smaller than the high-roofed i3, possibly borrowing the five-door hatchback format from the 1 Series sold in Europe (which would be a long-awaited dream come true if it made its way to the United States). The electric car would be about a foot shorter than the 1 series, though, according to the report, at about 158 inches long. It would be built on an electric version of BMW modular UKL platform.

Keep in mind, the BMW i1 is just a rumor at this point, with Motor.es keeping its sources unnamed. If true, though, it could replace the i3 in BMW’s lineup five years from now, in 2023.
