  • Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago by the North Pole, is one of the world's only visa-free zones.
  • But residents who can't support themselves or find housing can be expelled by the governor.
  • Insider spoke with four locals (one of whom was deported) about what it's like to work in Svalbard.

In a world where your passport dictates where you can live, travel, and work, there's a semi-frozen haven open to citizens of all countries — no complicated visa or employment permits required.

Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago 500 miles from the North Pole, is home to the world's northernmost human settlement. The 2,300 residents of the capital, Longyearbyen, include people of over 40 different nationalities, few of whom are "from" Svalbard, per say.

That's because you're not allowed to give birth on Svalbard — one of the many strange rules that govern existence on the remote collection of islands covered by ice.

There are surprises of course, whom the town endearingly calls "Svalbard babies" even when they're grown, Cecilia Blomdahl, a popular content creator based in Longyearbyen, said in an interview with Insider.

Among Svalbard's other odd rules left over from its days as a coal mining town include a monthly alcohol limit (24 beers, half a bottle of fortified wine, and one bottle of liquor), and a ban on cats to protect the bird population.

But the most important rule of all: Don't run out of money. And certainly don't find yourself without a home.

While the Svalbard treaty of 1920 permits anyone to live and work on the archipelago indefinitely, its open borders come with an asterisk: You must have enough money to support yourself and a roof over your head, or risk expulsion from the territory.

"You can stay here for as long as you can take care of yourself," Blomdahl said. "That means how you get to work, how you live, your housing — nothing will be provided for you."

Despite being a sovereignty of Norway, Svalbard employees pay an 8% income tax and local businesses contribute zero taxes toward the country's national insurance program (the mainland's current tax rate is 14% and 22% respectively). As a result, there are no retirement homes, public transport, homeless shelters, unemployment benefits, or really any social safety net you can think of.

Nobody understands this trade off quite like Mark Sabbatini, the founder and editor of IcePeople, "the world's northernmost alternative newspaper," who was kicked off Svalbard in 2021 after living in Longyearbyen for over a decade.

He moved to the island from the US in 2008 with around $ 1 million dollars in the bank and ambitions to launch an English-language newspaper, Sabbatini told Insider.

While running IcePeople, two of Sabbatini's apartments were condemned due to environmental issues he said were exacerbated by the area's rapidly warming climate. The first was built on top of thawing permafrost, and the second was located in a newly determined avalanche zone.

"At that point, I didn't have a whole lot of money and it was a big scramble every month to scrounge up stuff," he said. "I was begging, borrowing — not stealing, but pretty close."

After squatting in a friend's cabin during the pandemic, Sabbatini succumbed to his last resort: sleeping at the campground where a guide was killed in a polar bear attack the year before. That's when the governor gave him the boot.

"I was horribly miserable, but it was absolutely the right decision," Sabbatini, who now works at a local paper in Alaska, recalled.

"It's a very fair system. Your taxes are incredibly low, but the trade off is you get no social support," he continued. "If you're not paying for that system, why should you benefit from it?"

Cafe huskies Svalbard
"The planning of the schedule for the dog employees has been much more difficult than the human one," Fiala said.

Thanks to the local housing crisis, it's easier to find work on Svalbard than a place to live. Despite 2.5 months of complete darkness and below-freezing temperatures, the capital of Longyearbyen is a great place to be an entrepreneur, according to Martin Fiala, one of the co-founders of Café Huskies.

"If you have some idea, you're probably the only one who's doing it [in Svalbard]" he said. "I think if we set this up in a regular city where there's five other coffee places or shops on the same block, I don't think we'd be as successful."

But the area's remoteness also creates a separate set of challenges, Fiala explained, especially when it comes to shipping in goods from the mainland.

"If the coffee machine breaks, no one here can fix it and it would take weeks for us to get another one," he said, adding that "there's one guy in town who knows how to fix an industrial dishwasher."

"As soon as we save up some more money, we want to buy or rent another one and have it as a spare," he told Insider. "If there's ever a moon colony set up, I think we'd be perfect for it. It's really like a space station here."

Martin Fiala and his dog
Martin Fiala and his dog, Tequila: "Most of my job is to just to hike with my dog in like mountains. The price to pay is that it's exhausting and chaotic, but that's pretty awesome," Fiala told Insider.

Fiala and his co-founders all have second jobs, which made the launch of Café Huskies less of a financial risk. He studied architecture but currently works as a nature guide — one of many professionals in the local tourist economy with hidden passions.

"Here, in tourism, you have a lot of people working in reception, guiding, driving a truck," he told Insider. "But they're also an economist, a chemist, a photographer."

Why do people of so many different backgrounds and careers continue flocking to one of the world's most remote towns? One answer, according to Fiala, is that the extremity of life in Svalbard serves as a "catalyst" for both the best and worst qualities of humans.

"If you're depressed and you have a drinking problem and you come here, you'll probably just end up just drinking through the winter," he explained. "But if you're trying to finish the book, you're just going to do it. Life here gets dialed up."

Ford dealers have until the end of October to decide if they want to keep selling electric vehicles. And they’ll have to agree to some new conditions if they do, including transparent, set pricing, available online, according to a new report at Inside EVs.

We’ve known for some time that Ford was looking to shake up the way people buy its EVs in the US, moving all its EVs into a new business unit called Model e, with another called Ford Blue that will be responsible for internal combustion vehicles and hybrids. In June, CEO Jim Farley said: “We’ve got to go non-negotiated price. We’ve got to go 100 percent online. There’s no inventory, it all goes directly to the customer. And 100 percent remote pickup and delivery,” during a presentation to investors.

Farley’s not going to get all those wishes, but this week the automaker gave dealers a look at the future during an annual dealer conference. If a dealer wants to sell Model e EVs, they’ll have to agree to invest in regular training, install charging infrastructure, improve their physical and digital sales experiences, and perhaps most importantly, publish non-negotiable pricing online. You should be able to buy a Ford EV without ever setting foot in a dealership, but due to state laws the sales will continue to be facilitated through dealerships, not directly from Ford.

GOP Rep. Michael McCaul says Trump has a ‘different set of rules’ regarding the declassification of documents https://briefnews.eu/gop-rep-michael-mccaul-says-trump-has-a-different-set-of-rules-regarding-the-declassification-of-documents/ https://briefnews.eu/gop-rep-michael-mccaul-says-trump-has-a-different-set-of-rules-regarding-the-declassification-of-documents/#respond Sun, 04 Sep 2022 21:40:23 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/gop-rep-michael-mccaul-says-trump-has-a-different-set-of-rules-regarding-the-declassification-of-documents/ Michael McCaul
Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas.

  • McCaul says "a different set of rules" applies to Trump regarding the declassification of documents.
  • While on ABC, McCaul said he wouldn't personally transport such materials to his residence.
  • Trump last month claimed that he declassified the documents that were found at Mar-a-Lago.

GOP Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas on Sunday said that while he wouldn't personally take classified materials to his personal residence, he argued during an interview that "a different set of rules" applied to former President Donald Trump.

During an interview on ABC's "This Week" with co-anchor Martha Raddatz, McCaul — a former federal prosecutor and the ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee — said that while he had extensive experience handling sensitive documents, he also had never served as Commander-in-chief.

"You know, I have lived in the classified world most of my professional career, I personally wouldn't do that," he said of transporting classified materials to his residence. "But I'm not the president of the United States."

He continued: "He has a different set of rules that apply to him. I know they were taken out of the White House while he was president and whether or not he declassified those documents remains to be seen. He says he did. I don't have all the facts there."

Last month, the FBI searched Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, where federal officials retrieved several boxes of classified and top secret documents.

The subsequent release of the search revealed that agents were looking for documents connected to potential violations of the Espionage Act, which bars the unauthorized removal of defense-related information that could aid a foreign government. Trump is also being investigated for possible obstruction of justice violations.

The documents — regardless of whether or not they were considered to be classified — were supposed to be turned over to the National Archives upon the former president's departure from the Oval Office, per the Presidential Records Act.

Last month, Trump said that the documents taken by agents were "declassified," but over a dozen ex-Trump, White House officials disputed his claims.

McCaul later in the interview remarked that he "didn't have all the facts" regarding the FBI search.

"I know they were taken out of the White House while he was president and whether or not he declassified those documents remains to be seen," he said. "He says he did. I don't have all the facts there."

"There is a process for declassification. But again, the president's in a very different position than most of us in the national security space. We — the relevant committees on the Hill — have asked for briefings on this to find out what was so important here from a national security standpoint that would merit such an extreme measure to have a search warrant on a former president of the United States," he added.

Holding her hand out, Alison begged: “Can I have some sanitiser? He’s just touched me!”

“It was the Dutty wine,” Dermot tried to explain. “It was the Dutty wine.”

As Alison joked she’d put her hand in her tea to sanitise it, Dermot exclaimed “hang on,” before running off set.

“Get him out of here!” Alison shouted. “Listen, still to come we chat to Rochelle about her new documentary that’s very close to her heart.”

Queen of the South season 5 theories: Showrunner ‘rules out’ Eddie Brucks’ return https://briefnews.eu/queen-of-the-south-season-5-theories-showrunner-rules-out-eddie-brucks-return/ https://briefnews.eu/queen-of-the-south-season-5-theories-showrunner-rules-out-eddie-brucks-return/#respond Tue, 09 Feb 2021 05:48:24 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/queen-of-the-south-season-5-theories-showrunner-rules-out-eddie-brucks-return/

Eddie’s decision not to visit Teresa in hospital following the attack from Judge Lafayette (David Andrews) already drew perturbed reactions from the audience in season four.

However, their brief reunion at the end of the season was met with suspicion, with some even suggesting he could be an undercover agent sent by the CIA to dismantle Teresa’s drug operation from the inside.

In a recent discussion on Twitter, Rodriguez indicated viewers’ hopes for a more Teresa and James-centric season could come to fruition.

One fan asked: “How different would season four have been if James had been in it?”

Vanderpump Rules Star Jax Taylor Leaving After 8 Seasons; His Wife Brittany Cartwright Also Out https://briefnews.eu/vanderpump-rules-star-jax-taylor-leaving-after-8-seasons-his-wife-brittany-cartwright-also-out/ https://briefnews.eu/vanderpump-rules-star-jax-taylor-leaving-after-8-seasons-his-wife-brittany-cartwright-also-out/#respond Sat, 05 Dec 2020 03:19:11 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/vanderpump-rules-star-jax-taylor-leaving-after-8-seasons-his-wife-brittany-cartwright-also-out/

No one will be getting Jax-ed on Vanderpump Rules next season: Jax Taylor, who has starred on the Bravo reality series for the past eight seasons, won’t return next season. His wife and co-star, Brittany Cartwright, is also leaving the series.

“The last 8 years on Vanderpump Rules have been some of the most challenging, rewarding and fulfilling years of my life,” Taylor said in an Instagram post on Friday. “Although this is difficult to share, Brittany and I will not be returning for another season of Vanderpump Rules. We are excited to take this time to focus on our growing family and share with you our new endeavors.”

A Bravo spokesperson confirmed to our sister site Variety that “Jax Taylor and Brittany Cartwright will not be returning to Vanderpump Rules.”

Taylor has been the resident bad boy of the Bravo hit, a spinoff of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills that follows the staff of former Real Housewife Lisa Vanderpump’s L.A. restaurant SUR. He started out dating co-star Stassi Schroeder, but their on-and-off relationship blew up for good in Season 2 when Stassi’s friend Kristen Doute confessed to sleeping with Taylor. He later began dating Cartwright, who moved to L.A. from her native Kentucky to live with Taylor and work at SUR. The two got married last year, with their wedding filmed as part of the show’s eighth season, and Cartwright recently announced she is pregnant with their first child.

This marks yet another cast upheaval for Vanderpump Rules: Schroeder and Doute were both fired from the show earlier this year after a racist prank they pulled years ago on Black co-star Faith Stowers came to light. Plus, newly added cast members Max Boyens and Brett Caprioni were also dropped from the show for racist tweets.

Will you miss Jax and Brittany? Or will Vanderpump Rules be better off without them? Drop your thoughts on the news in the comments below, Bravo-holics.

Tess Daly references separation from Vernon on Strictly as she almost ‘breaks BBC rules’ https://briefnews.eu/tess-daly-references-separation-from-vernon-on-strictly-as-she-almost-breaks-bbc-rules/ https://briefnews.eu/tess-daly-references-separation-from-vernon-on-strictly-as-she-almost-breaks-bbc-rules/#respond Sun, 29 Nov 2020 11:35:10 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/tess-daly-references-separation-from-vernon-on-strictly-as-she-almost-breaks-bbc-rules/

Tess Daly, 51, was back on hand to host another edition of Strictly Come Dancing as the competition is just weeks away from its Grand Final. For the past few weeks, the BBC presenter has been separated from her husband Vernon, 46, as it was revealed earlier this month he was going to be taking part in this year’s series of I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! which has been relocated to Gwrych Castle in Wales. The mother-of-two rarely speaks about her other half on television, making her comments on Saturday night even more surprising.

The moment came as Tess’ co-host Claudia Winkleman, 48, had just finished speaking with contestants Ranvir Singh, 43, and Giovanni Pernice, 30.

Teasing what was to come, the comedic Strictly star explained former Royal Marine JJ Chalmers, 33, was going to be doing a routine based around the Scottish Highlands.

“I am taking you there for our honeymoon,” she joked to her fellow presenter before the mother-of-two then brought her husband into the conversation.

Not expecting to talk about her other half, the anchor of the programme remarked: “Vernon’s away. I’m in.”

Of course, this was in reference to him still taking part in the ITV reality and it is usually stated in the rules that BBC stars don’t reference their rival broadcaster on air.

It might have been a brief comment, but it didn’t go unnoticed by those watching at home who flocked to social media and launched into meltdown over the presenter almost breaking the rules.

One envious viewer wrote on Twitter: “Tess reminding me she’s the one married to Vernon and not me #Strictly.”

Another added: “‘Vernon’s away’ – I’m old enough to feel a genuine frisson of excitement that Tess has alluded to ITV *while on prime-time BBC1* #Strictly.”

Whilst a third commented: “Tess letting us know Vernon is in the Castle Strictly,” a fourth shared: “Tess mentioning Vernon being away on Strictly but not mentioning I’m A Celeb cause she’s on the BBC #imacelebrity #imaceleb #Strictly.”

Seen eating a slice of pizza and wearing a black, silk robe after finishing her duties on Strictly, the presenter wrote: “From one show to another. @I’mACelebrity @VernonKay.”

Tess has also been ushering her support for Vernon by posting pictures of the pair on her social media channels.

On Saturday evening, the television stalwart reposted a clip of her other half showing off some of his dancing skills.

It seems she was is very proud of her husband as she has also posted short snippets of him talking about her with his fellow campmates.

Fans of the pair have been lapping up the husband and wife being on-screen at the same time, with one replying to Tess’ posts on Instagram: “We need Vernon back on the television more.

“Could Vernon be a Strictly contestant or is that a conflict of interest? Don’t know,” a second wrote to the presenter.

A third posted: “Think Strictly has got competition,” whilst a fourth fan remarked: “Power couple for life.”

Whilst a fifth shared of the couple: “Have always loved you two, @vernonkay is our winner, blessings always.”

Strictly Come Dancing continues tonight at 7:25pm on BBC One. I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here continues tonight at 9pm on ITV.
