Buster Keaton was one of the biggest names in early cinema, famous for his physical comedy. He thrived on an ability to improvise these gags; Keaton grew up as a vaudeville performer, and spent his childhood improvising slapstick routines with his father onstage. As a Hollywood filmmaker, Keaton continued to rely on improvisation for his comedy — but this required him to follow one simple rule.

Keaton got his start as an entertainer traveling in a company alongside Harry Houdini. It was here that he learned to improvise fluidly and hilariously. His first time in front of a camera was in Fatty Arbuckle’s “The Butcher Boy.” “[Arbuckle] only had to turn me loose in the set and I’d have material in two minutes, because I’d been doing it all my life,” Keaton explained (via A Hard Act to Follow).

When it came to his own films, Keaton made sure there was space for on-the-spot creative decisions: “Well as a rule, oh about 50 percent you have in your mind before you start the picture, and the rest you develop as you’re making it,” Keaton told Studs Turkel. “We never even thought of writing a script, we didn’t need to.”

Silent film stars often left lots of room for improvisation in their work — in fact, they would often approach a film with only the beginning and end in mind. As far as Keaton and his counterparts were concerned, the path from point A to point B was half of the journey. “When we get the start and the finish, we’ve got it, because … the middle we can always take care of. That’s easy.”

There Was No Script To Follow

Keaton favored extreme gags over narratives, which is why he chose to make “Sherlock Jr.” “I laid out a few of these tricks, some of the tricks I knew from the stage,” he recalled (via A Hard Act to Follow). But he realized he couldn’t “do it and tell a legitimate story because they’re illusions … it’s got to come in a dream.” He chose the premise of a projectionist that falls asleep on the job so he could totally suspend reality. Keaton was all about maximizing his creative freedom.

Through creative storytelling, Keaton was able to improvise heavily for many years. Silent cinema left things so open-ended that the Hollywood legend would not even begin to work with a script until “The Cameraman” in 1929. However, when MGM and other studios moved exclusively into talking pictures, cinema changed forever. “New York stage directors, New York writers, dialogue writers, and the musicians union all moved to Hollywood,” Keaton recounted to CBC. The new writers brought with them a new style of writing, one that Stone Face described as “joke-happy.” “They don’t look for the action, they’re looking for funny things to say,” he lamented.

Keaton and the other kings of physical comedy struggled when silent films fell out of fashion — the film industry had new priorities. Keaton would go on to make several sound films, including the 1931 hit “Sidewalks of New York” (which was actually the actor’s most commercially successful film). Still, the actor lost the creative freedom he had enjoyed as a silent film director, including the freedom to improvise.

Eamonn Holmes steps into BBC Rule Britannia row on This Morning ‘Happy to take your money’ https://briefnews.eu/eamonn-holmes-steps-into-bbc-rule-britannia-row-on-this-morning-happy-to-take-your-money/ https://briefnews.eu/eamonn-holmes-steps-into-bbc-rule-britannia-row-on-this-morning-happy-to-take-your-money/#respond Tue, 25 Aug 2020 12:13:05 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/eamonn-holmes-steps-into-bbc-rule-britannia-row-on-this-morning-happy-to-take-your-money/

One headline which was unavoidable was the BBC’s decision to ban the lyrics to Rule Britannia at the Last Night of the Proms and Nick and Vanessa had very strong opinions about it. As the pair argued, Eamonn Holmes had to step in to find out if Nick felt the BBC were wrong to ban the Rule Britannia lyrics.

Eamonn remarked: “What I’m picking up from you Nick, is that the BBC are happy to take your money, they’re very very happy to take your money.

“But they will tell you what to do. They’re not broadcasting for you, they’re telling you, they’re imposing their values.

“It’s almost as if they are politicising or they themselves are campaigning on a number of issues, this being one.”

“I think there is a danger that the BBC, and I’m aware of what Vanessa says and we have addressed this on my radio show, has in a way gone down a silo in a way that it is quasi-campaigning,” Nick replied.

“It almost believes that it is part of social engineering. It isn’t. It is there to inform and to entertain.

“It has done in this particular instance for more than 90 years with the music and that should be the default position.

“If you find people who think that is wrong, they will be very, very scarce. This is where the BBC, I would argue, has lost its direction and manifestly lost it.”

Eamonn hit back: “Except you left one of those principles off which was to inform, educate and entertain.”

“Well presumably Vanessa you’ve got problems with the national anthem,” Nick replied.

Vanessa explained: “Do you know the second verse? No one knows the second verse of the national anthem.”

“So you’ve got a problem with that?” Nick asked again.

Yesterday on This Morning, Ruth Langsford had to step in as an argument between India Willoughby and Matthew Wright became heated over Rule Britannia.

India stated: “Look, what is wrong with the Empire, I’m a massive fan of the Empire.

“The Empire did a lot of good all around the world and a lot of the things they actually brought to countries have been copied and they’re still in place today.

“The Empire is a great thing, Britain is a great country and if you look at in the whole, we have done more good than bad.”

Matthew hit back: “It came at the same time as the Boer War when we got load of minerals by invading a country and putting its people to death. That’s why it was written.”

As they argued, Ruth stepped in: “I’m going to have to put a full stop on you. Full stop on you both on that one.”

This Morning airs weekdays on ITV at 10am.

Bradley Walsh rages at The Chase’s Shaun Wallace over ‘rule break’: ‘What you doing?’ https://briefnews.eu/bradley-walsh-rages-at-the-chases-shaun-wallace-over-rule-break-what-you-doing/ https://briefnews.eu/bradley-walsh-rages-at-the-chases-shaun-wallace-over-rule-break-what-you-doing/#respond Sat, 15 Aug 2020 18:53:57 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/bradley-walsh-rages-at-the-chases-shaun-wallace-over-rule-break-what-you-doing/

Bradley Walsh, 60, was joined on The Chase by four all-stars to try and win some money for their chosen charities with the fierce foursome compromised of Nadia Sawalha, 55, Gemma Atkinson, 35, Jimi Mistry, 47, and James Cosmo, 72. Before they could walk away with the cash prize, they needed to defeat The Barrister star Shaun, 60, who was on his A-game. However, when he was facing the latter, the quiz master was slammed by the host of the ITV quiz show as he noticed the general knowledge guru was talking to the audience.

After the presenter asked James and The Chaser what a group of badgers are commonly called, he addressed the apparent rule break.

“Who are you talking too?” Bradley asked, before adding: “Conversing with the audience – do you mind? I’m trying to run a show here.

“Who’s that? Members of your family in the front row?” the host jibed and was quite stunned when Shaun said they were.

“Is it really? I’m so sorry I didn’t realise,” the former soap actor remarked as he realised his error.

“Let’s get on with the game. No more talking to your family,” he continued.

Later in the round, when Shaun seemed to repeat a previous statement the host had made, Bradley lost his cool again.

“I already said that,” the presenter raged, before adding: “You’re too busy talking to your family.”

The Doctor Who actor then joked The Barrister’s guests would probably bring along one of his pets next time.

With all the interruptions throughout the head-to-head round, eventually it did come to an end for all involved.

Luckily, she managed to hold off The Barrister and made it back to the player’s table, bringing the jackpot up to £8,500.

Shaun even commended the soap star for her efforts, stating she was going to be good contestant in the Final Chase.

Despite accumulating £6,000 during his cash builder round, Jimi went on to accept the higher offer of £92,000.

Going head-to-head with the quiz master, the former Coronation Street actor didn’t answer one question incorrectly and brought the jackpot up to £100,500.

In the Final Chase, the foursome joined forces and managed to accumulate 18 steps between their money and The Chaser.

An astonishing game saw them defeat the quiz master and each took away over £25,000 for their chosen charities.

Commenting on the result, one viewer wrote on Twitter: “#thechase I did not expect that but well done.”

Another added on the social media platform: “Actually Gemma won this for them! Well done lady!! Well done team! #TheChase.”

The Chase airs weekdays at 5pm on ITV.

Charlie Stayt exasperated with minister over 2 metre social distance ‘Is it a rule?!’ https://briefnews.eu/charlie-stayt-exasperated-with-minister-over-2-metre-social-distance-is-it-a-rule/ https://briefnews.eu/charlie-stayt-exasperated-with-minister-over-2-metre-social-distance-is-it-a-rule/#respond Thu, 11 Jun 2020 09:22:36 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/charlie-stayt-exasperated-with-minister-over-2-metre-social-distance-is-it-a-rule/

However, the conversation took a turn when Stayt asked about whether the two-metre distance rule which the UK has been adhering to was in fact a rule or if it was only guidance.

Mr Clarke explained: “At this point, I just want to reaffirm to people that our guidance is two-metres at this point and that should be reflected in the way we go about our lives, until such time as the scientific advice allows us to say otherwise.”

Stayt interrupted: “Your answer is that it has always been under discussion, so there is no new impetus to what it is now, there is no change?”

Clarke added: “There is clearly discussion going on, but there is nothing that we can say at this time that changes the advice. I’m not seeking to evade that question.”

Lucifer season 5 theories: Lilith to rule over hell in final season https://briefnews.eu/lucifer-season-5-theories-lilith-to-rule-over-hell-in-final-season/ https://briefnews.eu/lucifer-season-5-theories-lilith-to-rule-over-hell-in-final-season/#respond Tue, 19 May 2020 01:26:21 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/lucifer-season-5-theories-lilith-to-rule-over-hell-in-final-season/

The popular Biblical drama loosely based on Neil Gaiman’s comic book creations follows the unlikely adventures of Lucifer Morningstar after his vacation to Earth is side-tracked by police cases, unwanted visitors and a touch of romance.

Series regulars in the past have included Lucifer’s mother, Goddess, who possesses the mortal body of Charlotte Richards (Tricia Helfer in season two).

However, the series still has a whole religious text of Biblical mythology to pull from, and some fans have some intriguing theories regarding angels and demons who could make an appearance in season five.

Among them is Lilith, the mother of Lucifer’s most loyal demon friend Mazikeen (Lesley-Ann Brandt), who has yet to appear on the show despite being discussed multiple times.

READ MORE: Lucifer plot hole: Fans expose major Amenadiel error ‘Seems unlikely’

Maze’s parental background is confirmed in a heart-to-heart with Lucifer during season four, where she reveals Lilith wasn’t much of a mother during her childhood.

Lilith was also confirmed to be the first wife of God’s first man, Adam, as Eve (Inbar Lavi) confirmed: “Our entire marriage he was just pining over wife number uno – Lilith tamed the beasts of the night, stupid perfect Lilith.”

After being referenced so much in season four, many viewers are convinced Lilith will finally make an appearance in the upcoming fifth instalment of Lucifer.

Some fans took to Reddit to discuss Lilith’s potential role as season five’s antagonist.

“Plus in many storylines about the devil, Lilith is never too far away so I feel like it’s inevitable for her to make an appearance at some point in the show.”

A version of the same character has a major role in The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, where she is also referred to as Madame Satan and played by former Doctor Who star Michelle Gomez.

Although Lucifer’s iteration of the mistress of Hell would most likely be played by a different actress, Tom Ellis’ recent cameo on The CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earths confirms the series isn’t averse to crossovers.

Given the Biblical Lilith is also depicted as a wife of Satan, fans have wondered if she and Chloe Decker (Lauren German) could be fighting for Lucifer’s affections in season five.

Piers Morgan slams Gove as daughter gets covid test within 24 hours ‘One rule for you!’ https://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-slams-gove-as-daughter-gets-covid-test-within-24-hours-one-rule-for-you/ https://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-slams-gove-as-daughter-gets-covid-test-within-24-hours-one-rule-for-you/#respond Mon, 13 Apr 2020 08:33:58 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-slams-gove-as-daughter-gets-covid-test-within-24-hours-one-rule-for-you/

BACK BRITAIN’S BRAVE NHS HEROES – CLICK HERE NOW

Despite it being Bank Holiday Monday, Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid were back at the helm of Good Morning Britain earlier today, delivering the latest news and discussions surrounding the coronavirus pandemic sweeping the nation. Before introducing the latest guests onto the show, Morgan spoke about a news story which has come to light; Michael Gove MP getting a covid-19 test for his daughter who developed virus symptoms in order to come out of self-isolation and return to work.

“Before we get to our panel, a story we haven’t discussed; Michael Gove obviously a senior member of the government, was seen out jogging and this surprised people cause he’s supposed to be under 14-day self-isolation because one of his household had shown symptoms of the virus,” Morgan began.

“Anyway, it then turns out that it was his daughter who had shown the symptoms, and he had gone to Chief Medical Officer [Dr.] Chris White – Michael Gove – and asked for permission to test his daughter so he could return to full government detail.”

“Something every NHS worker in the country would like to be able to do,” Reid interjected and pointed out.

“His daughter showed symptoms on April 5, it now transpires within 24 hours Mr Whitty had approved the request by Mr Gove for his daughter to be tested,” Morgan read.

“By Wednesday, the NHS test had come back negative. Now, they have taken a position if you are a senior member of the government in the fight against this [coronavirus] you should be back at your workplace as soon as possible.

“You could argue you could do the work as well from his home, and you could also argue – as I’m sure as many people will this morning – that if you’re a front line NHS worker in exactly the same position, why are you not getting a test?” Morgan continued.

He then explained how one paramedic show symptoms of coronavirus and he and his household of three other paramedics all had to self-isolate because they couldn’t get a test to rule out whether or not they all had the disease.

“What is the difference between Michael Give and an NHS worker? He can carry on working from home!” Morgan slammed.

“This is what we want for everybody on the frontline, the ability to test them immediately, so if they’re negative they can get on with their lives and go back to work,” he continued to rant.

Later on in the show, Morgan and Reid were joined by Rachel Reeves MP, Shadow Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and she was asked whether she knew about Gove’s daughter getting a coronavirus test.

Morgan tried again: “Should he [Gove] have done this?”

“I would have reservations, I wasn’t aware of it [happening] but there shouldn’t be one rule for some and another,” Reeves said.

“Doctors and nurses have to be at their work place, you are currently working fro your home, Michael Gove could have worked from home!” Morgan remarked.

“I’d like to hear Michael Give explain why he can do this! Is it one rule for you and another for doctors, surgeons and everyone who has to self-isolate?”

It comes after Gove’s wife Sara Vine told the Daily Mail, whom she writes a newspaper column for about her family being on lockdown.

She said her daughter, Beatrice, 17, had come down with a high fever and “assorted Covid-19 symptoms” last Sunday (April 5).

“She seems perfectly fine now (oh, blissful youth),” she added. “But, as a precaution, the rest of us are now self-isolating, including my husband.”

Gove tweeted confirmation of his family’s isolation, he wrote: “Many thanks for kind messages. In accordance with the guidance, I am isolating at home after a member of my family started to display mild symptoms of coronavirus on Sunday.

“I have not displayed any symptoms and am continuing to work as normal.”

Understandably, some viewers were furious with this news.

Taking to Twitter to comment, one said: “@piersmorgan I’m glad you ripped Michael gove to shreds ! HE should of got in line and wait for a test like the rest of us waiting for a covid19 test ! @ITV @GMB #ITV #GMB  #COVID19 #PPE #UKlockdown.”

“One rule for gove and the Tories one rule for NHS workers. Test them not us. Well said @piersmorgan #GMB,” another remarked.

Someone else commented: “Great question again on #gmb from @piersmorgan .. no chance of a straight answer out of @michaelgove . One rule for them another for the rest. Disgusting that he gets a test for his daughter and #NHS staff have to blindly continue the front line fight without test..”

However, one argued: “Weather u agree or not it obvious why gove got a test ….. he’s a member of the front bench government with the PM sick they can’t aford to let another one get sick these people are running the country in a crisis and need to be givin first dibs , like it or not #GMB.”

Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield were joined by a number of guests on This Morning to talk about the Prime Minister’s announcement last night that all UK schools would close tomorrow because of coronavirus. However, fans were left distracted by host Phillip because he wouldn’t take his hands out of his pockets, but he has now addressed the issue.

Holly and Phillip welcomed a whole new audience today because of the huge number of people across the UK who have been asked to work from home in the hopes of slowing the spread of coronavirus.

Before the two could continue with the show, Phillip addressed something that fans had found distracting.

The host revealed people had been asking why his hands were constantly in his pockets.

He quickly explained: “You should never present with your hands in your pockets, you get shouted at a lot.

“And people have said, ‘Why are you standing with your hands in your pockets?’

“Because I know where they are. So I’m not touching my face.”

Holly chipped in: “Oh, I wish I had some pockets now. I want to touch my face.”

The presenters were determined to give the audience some positive news amongst the mass uncertainty at the moment.

At the beginning of the show Phillip said: “We are going to keep smiling and we are on a mission today to make you smile.

“We’ve been hunting around, we had this idea a few days ago, and we’ve found some of our favourite viral videos.”

The clips were enough to cheer the viewers up who are having to self-isolate for one reason or another.

One viewer tweeted: “@thismorning Watching @AlisonHammond today has cheered me right up!“

Another added: “This must be one of the funniest videos ever on This Morning.”

“@AlisonHammond Is just PURE GOLD at a time like this! Just when i couldn’t love her anymore she has me belly laughing in what feels the greatest time of fear and uncertainty,” said another.

British Airways secrets EXPOSED: How one rule change TRANSFORMED cabin crew https://briefnews.eu/british-airways-secrets-exposed-how-one-rule-change-transformed-cabin-crew/ https://briefnews.eu/british-airways-secrets-exposed-how-one-rule-change-transformed-cabin-crew/#respond Wed, 21 Nov 2018 07:40:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/british-airways-secrets-exposed-how-one-rule-change-transformed-cabin-crew/

British Airways was founded in 1974 and is today the largest airline in the UK. The company has seen vast changes over the years, including those made to the cabin crew’s rules and regulations. While it may be hard to imagine, British Airways stewardesses were once forbidden from getting married, a former cabin member has claimed.

Roz Hanby, who was the face of British Airways in the 1970s, revealed in documentary “A Very British Airline: British Airways Behind the Scenes” how they were “not allowed” to get married.

Ms Hanby said: “It was definitely important to look good, you were the in-flight entertainment. You weren’t allowed to get married.”

As shocking as this claim is, it is not the only alleged cabin crew rule which is worlds away from today’s expectations from stewardesses.

Ms Hanby went on to claim that airline Pan American World Airways would even “weigh their stewardesses before they went on each flight”.

Of course in this day and age these practices would never happen, however, cabin crew are still expected to complete complex training before they take to the air.

One BA worker explained: “British Airways has always been renowned for its cabin crew, certainly to get a job at British Airways is very hard.

“I think it’s because we don’t want to dilute what we have.”

Flight secrets: 1950s air hostess reveals this strict airline rule – does it exist now? https://briefnews.eu/flight-secrets-1950s-air-hostess-reveals-this-strict-airline-rule-does-it-exist-now/ https://briefnews.eu/flight-secrets-1950s-air-hostess-reveals-this-strict-airline-rule-does-it-exist-now/#respond Sun, 18 Nov 2018 03:18:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/flight-secrets-1950s-air-hostess-reveals-this-strict-airline-rule-does-it-exist-now/

Cabin crew in the 1950s had to take great care of their appearance while at work.

The early decades of flying were strongly associated with glamour and luxury as only the wealthy could afford to fly.

Consequently, the air hostesses were expected to look pleasing to the eye.

However, some flight attendant requirements were also very practical and necessary.

An air hostess who served with United Airlines in the USA in the early 1950s has revealed the height restrictions that were in place.

Ethel Pattison, 93, joined United Airlines as a stewardess in the summer of 1951.

Today, she is a historian at Los Angles airport in California, US which is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year.

She explained that when she flew, air hostesses needed to be within a certain height bracket.

This was entirely from practical reasons as the woman needed to be able to reach upwards as well as not scraping the aircraft ceiling.

“In those days, those ladies applying to be stewardesses had to be 5 foot 2 inches to 5 foot 8 inches,” she told Express.co.uk.

“With the jets, planes were bigger and so height increased to 5 foot 10 inches to reach the overhead storage.”

Air hostesses also had to look after their weight, and this was measured by bosses on a regular basis.

A New York Times classified ad for stewardesses at Eastern Airlines listed the following requirements in 1966: “A high school graduate, single (widows and divorcees with no children considered), 20 years of age (girls 19 1/2 may apply for future consideration).

“5’2” but no more than 5’9″, weight 105 to 135 in proportion to height.”

The strict rules did not prevent the cabin crew enjoying themselves, however.

“I enjoyed being a stewardess, living with roommates in Seattle and travelling and learning about the United States, it was a great experience for me,” Ethel said.

Ethel went on the become America’s First Airport Tour Guide in 1956 at Los Angeles airport.

The airport then was incredibly different to the huge bustling hub it is today.

“LAX was three two storey buildings before the jet age airport in 1961, two for the airlines with small seating area for passengers and their outside gates and one for post office, bank, coffee shop and weather bureau, restaurant and observation deck on the second story,” she explained.

She added: “Looking back in time at how far LAX has come, it seems to adapt to its growth and increase in passenger totals well and we look forward to seeing it continue to reach its potential.”

Rules still apply to flight attendants today when it comes to appearance, although they are more relaxed.
