МOSCOW, 30 NOVEMBER— #Romanovs100, the large-scale, cross-platform, multimedia project launched by RT to mark the centenary of the execution of the last Russian royal family, won in two categories at the Drum Social Buzz Awards, a competition honoring outstanding work in social media. RT’s project took first in the category ‘Best International Strategy’, as well as in the category ‘Most Innovative Use of Social’, beating out projects produced for Samsung, Adidas, and Nestle, among others. #Romanovs100 was also highly commended in the category ‘Best Use of Imagery’. #Romanovs100, produced in collaboration with the State Archive of Russia, took place across four platforms – YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Over the course of 100 days – from April 8 to July 17 – rare archival photographs from the Romanovs’ personal collection were published across the project’s accounts. The published photographs represent the most complete collection of photos taken by the royal family to this day. As part of the #Romanovs100 project, RT also produced a VR animation of the ‘Romanovs’ Lullaby,’ an exclusive composition by well-known Russian musician and performer Peter Nalitch. In addition, RT produced three other video clips in the style of the early 20th century, using archival photographs as a reference to reconstruct real moments from the royal family’s life. Earlier this year, #Romanovs100 won at the Drum Content Awards and was a finalist in two categories at the Epica Awards. #Romanovs100 was created by the same team behind the channel’s international #1917LIVE project — one of the biggest-ever historical re-enactments on Twitter. Dozens of Twitter accounts were set up as key historical characters of the period, from the last Russian Tsar Nicholas II and revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin to common workers and soldiers, tweeting events from 100 years ago in real-time. Historians from the US and UK took part in the project, as well as the world-renowned Brazilian author Paulo Coelho. The project has received more than 20 Russian and international awards, including the 2018 Webby People’s Voice Award. At the Shorty Social Good Awards, the project won for ‘Best in Education’ and won gold for ‘Best Overall Twitter Presence.’ It was also a three-time finalist at this year’s Cannes Lions festival. With a series of loud blasts, North Korea’s only nuclear test site – underground tunnels and surface infrastructure – went up in a cloud of dust. RT was at the scene to witness the historic demolition. Invited along with reporters from a handful of other media outlets, RT’s Igor Zhdanov saw the destruction from a few dozen meters away. In an unprecedented act of transparency, the reclusive nation allowed him to inspect locations across the Punggye-ri test site before and after it was reduced to rubble by explosives. Along with the infrastructure at the site, which used to house workers and soldiers, the North Koreans collapsed four tunnels, one of which – Northern Tunnel No. 2 – recently endured five underground nuclear tests. According to Zhdanov, it looks the part, being the most battered out of the four. No journalists were allowed to enter since the tunnels were already rigged with explosives by the time the media arrived. But even more significant is the demolition of the Western Tunnel – a bigger, newer underground system that has seen no nuclear tests at all. North Koreans on site told Zhdanov that its closure is meant as a demonstration of Pyongyang’s willingness to take the first steps in reconciling with Seoul and the rest of the world alike. Now, having rendered the nuke test site useless, the North expects the international community to meet it halfway. Another before and after – an observation post for the northern (the most used) tunnel. A number of these destroyed – all empty, just walls and a ceiling. We were told they got rid of all the equipment beforehand – but we couldn't veryfy the claim pic.twitter.com/dkUb4dkVHT — Igor Zhdanov (@IgorZhdanovRT) May 25, 2018 That prospect is now weighing in the balance though, following US President Donald Trump’s abrupt cancellation of what was lining up to be an unprecedented summit with Kim Jong-un. Trump cited Kim’s “open hostility” for lashing out at Vice President Mike Pence’s suggestion of a “Libyan model” for North Korea. Libya surrendered its nuclear research materials to the US in 2003, and in 2011 its government was overthrown and its leader, Muammar Gaddafi, was killed in a US-backed revolution. Yet, North Korea says it’s still willing to talk to the US for the sake of “peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula and mankind.” The first-ever panoramic video filmed in outer space, produced by RT in collaboration with Russian cosmonauts, has won a prestigious prize for the best use of virtual reality at the annual Shorty Awards 2018. The most immersive way to experience a spacewalk, short of going on one yourself, is the RT video that captures a breathtaking view of the planet Earth, complete with swirling clouds and blue seas, contrasted against the blackness of space. The two cosmonauts outside the International Space Station are not there to simply chill out either – you can witness them hard at work, performing maintenance on equipment outside the hull. They also launch miniature satellites – by hand – to take measurements in low-Earth orbit. RT produced its video in collaboration with the Russian space agency and RSC Energia. It initially premiered in early October 2017, during a special event at a VR theater at Moscow’s Museum of Cosmonautics, commemorating the launch of Sputnik-1, the first artificial satellite of Earth. Numerous other 360 videos – from breathtaking nature, to thunderous military parades, to the unique project Revolution in 360 – are available in the RT collection. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov says he wouldn’t want a “race of bans” between Russia and the US, as the Russian State Duma mulls a tit-for-tat response to the revoking of RT’s press accreditation in Congress.
The minister was speaking at a joint press conference with his Italian counterpart, Angelino Alfano, on Friday, where an RT correspondent asked him about Moscow’s response to the US congressional press office’s decision this week to revoke RT America’s credentials citing its status of a “foreign agent.”
“We have been studying the situation that has happened with your company. I’m convinced that it’s absolutely unacceptable for any more or less respectable, civilized country,” Lavrov said. He went on to note that while Russian Foreign Ministry is so far undecided on whether to take any reciprocal actions, he would prefer not to add fuel to the already raging fire.
“I cannot say now what our answer will be, but I really would not want to join a race of bans, which will harm the media as well as those people who get information from the media about what’s happening in the world,” he said.
Pursuant to Russian law, the Foreign Ministry has the final say in the accreditation of all foreign correspondents in Russia’s state bodies and may, in turn, impose restrictions on their activity if the countries they registered in limit operations of the Russian media.
Lavrov’s call for restraint comes at a time the State Duma Regulations Committee said it is mulling a ban on all visits by US journalists working for the US media to the Russian Parliament. The Committee’s head, Olga Savastyanova, said on Friday she expects the motion to be approved on the State Duma plenary session next week and come into force by the end of the week.
The State Duma has been working together with the Foreign Ministry on Moscow’s response to the withdrawal of RT America’s Capitol Hill accreditation, State Duma Vice-Speaker Pyotr Tolstoy said on Thursday. Keeping “foreign agent” media in Russia out of the Duma is one of the options being considered.
Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said he “absolutely understands” why the lawmakers are suggesting it, decrying what he described as “blatant attacks in violation of the freedom of speech” on the Russian media in the US.
RT America (officially registered as T&R Productions LLC) filed as a foreign agent on November 10 under pressure from the US authorities, who threatened legal action if it refused to comply. In a mirror response, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law, allowing Russian authorities to brand certain foreign media “foreign agents.”

There promises to be a lot of drama at the 2018 World Cup in Russia as the 2010 World Cup winners Spain have been placed in the same group as Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal.
Football greats Peter Schmeichel and Stan Collymore discuss the results of the draw with RT.
Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, who teamed up with RT for the 2018 World Cup Draw coverage, said that Group B is going to be a “kicker” at the event in Russia. The legendary Dane had to overcome a heavy blizzard to deliver his analysis of the Friday draw as he was broadcasting live from the rooftop of a Moscow hotel overlooking the Kremlin.
“We’ve got Portugal, Spain, Morocco and Iran. Iran has done really well in their qualifications. Morocco is a great team as well. But this Portugal v. Spain game, that’s one of the games really to look forward to,” Schmeichel said. Spain is among the favorites of any tournament they appear in, but Portugal has Cristiano Ronaldo, “a player who can do anything even if the team isn’t playing well,” he added.

Another member of the RT crew with a rich footballing background, ex-Liverpool star Stan Collymore, focused on the World Cup’s opening match, in which hosts Russia will take on Saudi Arabia at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium. The encounter is a “fascinating one on so many levels – not just the footballing level, but political level. Of course, there’s loads of stuff going on in the Middle East at the moment,” he said.
With the two teams being the lowest ranked among the 32 participants, “from Russia’s perspective it’s a fantastic opportunity to get the Russian public behind you; to get some confidence for the team; to win the game and start the tournament on the front foot,” Collymore said.
Another quartet that stands out after the draw is Group G, with Belgium, Panama, Tunisia and England.

“There’s lot that we need to find out about,” England manager Gareth Southgate told RT after learning the names of his opponents. “We’ve never played Panama before in our history. That’s an exciting game. And, obviously, Tunisia have come up through African qualifying, which is very, very tough. But we have to say we haven’t seen as much of those teams as we have Belgium,” he said. Southgate described Belgium as “hugely impressive team,” saying that the match against them “will capture everybody’s imagination at home. But the other two games are the one that we’ve got to get right to have a chance of getting through.”
Belgium coach Roberto Martinez told RT that it was “difficult to find some words” after the World Cup draw. “I’ve spent 21 years in England; in the British game. I’ve worked with some of the players that they have in the England camp,” he said. With most of the Belgian roster also playing for English clubs, “it’s going to be a lot of chemistry; a lot of banter in the Premier League dressing rooms between Belgian players and English players,” he said.
According to Martinez, Belgium’s game against England would be “a really good opportunity to see two generations with a lot of quality and a lot technical ability; to see how we adapt at the World Cup and what level we can give.”
Even seemingly simple things come with hazards. Schmeichel described what can go wrong and turn into an international scandal at the draw, even despite the ceremony looking to be quite easy. “I was hosting the Champions League draw. And we had a rehearsal. One of the balls popped up and went inside the table.”
“You can’t redo the draw,” Schmeichel said, talking about the draw ceremony. “You know you’re live on TV.”

The Russian Revolution is all around, as RT viewers will now be able to witness the horrors of war, join Vladimir Lenin as he seizes power, and even watch Joseph Stalin play the piano in new 360 VR-ready videos for RT’s #1917LIVE project.
“With #1917LIVE we attempted to create an alternate reality online, so that our historic role play would make the viewer feel that they are there,” says RT Deputy Editor-in-Chief Kirill Karnovich-Valua.
“So, #1917LIVE is an immersive project and 360-degree video is the most immersive video format. RT’s breakthrough Project: Revolution VR-series will bring viewers back in time, and everyone will have the chance to experience 1917 Russia almost as it was 100 years ago.”
The eight videos, each lasting several minutes and featuring prominent Russian performers in key roles, places the viewer in the middle of dramatic scenes as they unfold in real time, and thanks to the panoramic format, those watching can turn their heads and train their eyes to whatever captures their interest.
The first of three scenes which have been made available depicts Russian soldiers on the Eastern Front, stuck in the lull of trench life, only to have their deceptive peace shattered in seconds by the first landing shell.

The second shows privileged foreign travelers enjoying the leisure of casually discussing Russia’s political volatility, as casualties are delivered from the frontline to Petrograd’s Vitebsky station.
In the third, a fleeing Bolshevik takes refuge from the Cossack patrols in a quiet courtyard in the capital of the Russian Empire. And as with all political conflicts, civilian bystanders do not have the luxury of ignoring the bigger picture.
Revolutionaries and convicts, plundering Bolsheviks and undercover agents will all feature in the upcoming videos that will be released as Russia approaches the exact 100-year anniversary of Lenin’s followers storming the Winter Palace, and ushering in the most radical socio-political experiment of the 20th century.
Project: Revolution is best enjoyed alongside the rest of #1917LIVE, a multimedia project that has, since the beginning of the year, been running in tandem with the events of a century ago.
Political situation ripe for revolt, time to discuss technical aspects. Waiting for Constituent Assembly is pointless #1917LIVE
— Vladimir Lenin (@VLenin_1917) October 23, 2017
The centerpiece of the project is the twitter hashtag #1917LIVE. It has brought together hundreds of voices tweeting through the February Revolution, the April Theses, the July Days, and soon the October Revolution as if they were happening outside your window.
Initially run by RT staff, now hundreds of people – including MPs from several European states, and the writer Paulo Coelho – have adopted historical personas, to create one of the biggest live role play experiences in internet history. In excess of 170,000 #1917LIVE tweets have been sent out over the course of 2017.
It’s not too late to join or follow the groundbreaking project, and up-to-date tweets, photos and videos can be accessed at 1917.rt.com

Emmanuel Macron’s administration blocked a producer for RT’s video agency Ruptly from an event at the Élysée Palace on Tuesday. The incident appears to be the latest involving Russian media outlets and Macron, who seems to have a grudge against them.
Ugo Passuello came to the residence of the French president to cover Macron’s meeting with UK Prime Minister Theresa May. The palace’s press service released a statement ahead of the conference, saying that accessing it would only require a French press card, which Passuello had with him.
However, when he showed it to security he was barred from the event, allegedly over not having accreditation, he said.
“They saw the word ‘Ruptly’ on it. Several minutes later they told me Ruptly was not welcome at the Élysée Palace anymore and asked me to leave the place,” Passuello told RT.
Passuello said the palace security didn’t check his name against any list. Instead the guard called somebody on the phone and then simply rejected him.
“I am officially accredited by the Foreign Ministry,” he said. “This is purely political.”
Ruptly asked for clarification from the French president’s administration and has not immediately received it.
“Last time we asked Macron how he plans to work with foreign media. Voila!” commented RT’s Editor-in-Chief Margarita Simonyan.
The French president previously branded RT and the Russian news agency Sputnik “deceitful propaganda” and implied that people working for them are not “real journalists.”
“I have always had an exemplary relationship with foreign journalists, but they have to be real journalists,” Macron told RT France head Xenia Fedorova during a joint press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Versailles. “All foreign journalists, including Russian journalists, had access to my campaign.”
The dismissive remark came in response for comments on his campaign’s obstruction of RT and Sputnik during the election track. RT journalists were barred from the candidate’s HQ without a proper explanation.
In March, Macron’s aide Mounir Mahjoubi accused RT and Sputnik of being the “first source of false information shared about our candidate.” Accusations of false reporting also came from Richard Ferrand, Macron’s En Marche! Party, back in February.
No example of the alleged misinformation was ever provided.

RT said it “adamantly” denied these unfounded allegations.
“It seems that it has become acceptable to level such serious charges at RT without presenting any evidence to substantiate them, as well as to apply this ‘fake news’ label to any reporting that one might simply find unfavorable,” RT’s Press Office said in response to Ferrand’s remarks.
