Adam Croft is one of the most successful independent authors in modern times
And the reason he is underneath the radar? It’s because rather than having his books printed by a traditional publisher, Adam sells his books via the internet via his own website and Amazon, so readers download them to read on computers, e-readers and mobile phones. It meant that at one point, he was earning an incredible £2,000 a day in royalties from his books, making him one of the world’s most successful independently published authors. Adam’s is an inspiring story for anyone who wants to be a writer but fears that the world of traditional publishing isn’t for them. “I had all kinds of jobs before I became an author,” he explains. “I was an actor, I worked in a telecoms centre where I had to tell people that they were having their mobile phones cut off; I worked for a company which sold personalised number plates, and I had my own internet marketing company.” It was particularly nice to be approached by Amazon, as they don’t take submissions from authors, and only approach people who they’re interested in He published his first book Too Close For Comfort, the first in the Knight and Culverhouse detective series, in 2011, and it perfectly illustrates how self-publishing can work for authors by providing a steady income stream. “Although it was published six years ago, it still sells copies every day, which makes useful residuals,” Adam explains. “If you sell 50 copies a day of an older book, you’re making extra money without extra work.” He adds that to publish your work independently, you have to be both author and publisher, and realise that you have to be both creative as a writer plus have the business nous to keep a roof over your head. “I started to shimmy sideways into full-time writing and publishing from internet marketing when the sales of my first book showed that it would be commercially viable. “ Since then, Adam has published 16 further books, six featuring detectives Knight and Culverhouse, four in the Kempston Hardwick Mystery series (“a tongue-in-cheek look at the golden age of detective fiction”), three volumes of short stories and three standalone books. One of the latter, Her Last Tomorrow, has a particularly gripping plotline – if your daughter was kidnapped, would you murder your wife to save her? The book sold an amazing 150,000 copies in just five months, making it a massive financial success for the author, who was approached by Amazon’s publishing arm Thomas & Mercer to publish it as a paperback book as well as an e-book, thus adding to sales . “It was particularly nice to be approached by Amazon, as they don’t take submissions from authors, and only approach people who they’re interested in.” Not bad for a book which Adam admits he found difficult to write. “I got it three-quarters done and was struggling with the ending, so I put it in a drawer for six months. But I’m so glad I got it finished,” says the Bedfordshire-based writer. Self-publishing means that Adam has a special relationship with his readers, who engage with him on social media and post many five-star reviews on Amazon. “I’m always anxious to get the next book out, as readers write and ask when the next one is coming out. I give myself a daily target of 2 – 3,000 words, but that can be as many as 5,000 when I really get going. “Readers write to me and say which characters they’d like to see more of or find out more about. I also survey my readers once a year – at the moment, they are 80% female – I think women readers like to invest in the characters and worlds I create. “It’s great for me to have that contact with the readers – and not just because I might sit at home going stir crazy if I didn’t! It’s sensible business practice, too. If Amazon should disappear tomorrow, my career would be gone but because I’ve got that direct contact with readers, I could continue selling to them via my customer base.” Adam’s success shows just what can be achieved by authors with the drive and business sense to self publish, and is refreshingly direct about the book market. “Ultimately, the market will decide what books they want to buy, rather than publisher A or B.” * You can buy Adam’s books, including his brand new title, Tell Mer I’m Wrong, from his website at adamcroft.net JK Rowling gave Harry Potter fans some material for their nightmares when she revealed that before plumbing was installed in Hogwarts, students and teachers merely “went” on the floor and magicked away their waste. Rowling shared this disconcerting truth in a post on Pottermore, the website she uses to communicate with her fans. It was part of a larger anecdote on the “Chamber of Secrets” for which one of the Harry Potter books is named, but no one really paid attention to the rest. Hogwarts didn't always have bathrooms. Before adopting Muggle plumbing methods in the eighteenth century, witches and wizards simply relieved themselves wherever they stood, and vanished the evidence. #NationalTriviaDay — Pottermore (@pottermore) January 4, 2019 Posted for National Trivia Day, the tidbit inspired more questions than it answered (and it’s doubtful whether anyone was really asking the questions that it answered). From the floor and their ass? Or just the floor? Did they still have to wipe? — NewbieDM (@newbiedm) January 5, 2019 Could they not even have designated places in which to do this? They just did a shit on the floor? I know we are talking about wizards vanishing their own poo but I’m unconvinced. — Eve Aaronovitch (@EveAaronovitch) January 5, 2019 No transition period at all? What kind of absolute tragedy made them make the RADICAL switch from vanishing to actual plumbing? Giving me the fear — S (@SBywalec) January 5, 2019 As usual when “it’s magic!” is invoked as an explanation, there were some logical flaws in the setup. Besides, where does it vanish to? Wasn't there a passage in Deathly Hallows where Hermione was talking about the laws of transfiguration, saying you cannot make things out of nothing, and you cannot actually banish something into nonexistence? I mean, it has to go somewhere. — rhianna. (@rhiannakathlyne) January 5, 2019 Considering they learn vanishing spells after a few years at school. The professors must have been adept at watching for strained faces during lectures. — Key (@KeyFeathers) January 5, 2019 A few pointed out that indoor bathrooms have been around for quite a bit longer than Rowling thinks – indeed, even the most primitive medieval setups had some kind of privy room, even if it was just a hole in the floor that led outside the castle walls. Ok but wiZaRdS aRE so aDVanCeD though. — genessa (@probablyhiking) January 5, 2019 CASTLES ALWAYS HAD TOILETS! HOLES IN THE WALLS! BUCKETS! Why wouldnt wizard castles have it too. Who came up with this "fact"? Surely not JK herself. — Noone (@taxeedrvr) January 5, 2019 Others saw the tweet as the logical outgrowth of Potter fans’ desire for ever more salacious trivia – and Rowling’s willingness to feed that hunger. Harry Potter fans: it’d be cool if we had some Harry Potter trivia — Calum McSwiggan (@CalumMcSwiggan) January 5, 2019 But most people were just grossed out. Some things are better left unsaid. This is definitely one of those things. — ✨Alesandra✨✌🏽🧛🏼♀️🦇🖤 (@mikuhatsunegirl) January 5, 2019 should jk rowling just stop talking 100% yes ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇ 0% no 8,967,156,284 votes • final — SHORT KING (@Dancantsin) January 5, 2019 Two years ago the first Fantastic Beasts movie was set in New York City, while The Crimes of Grindelwald will mainly be set in Paris. With three more movies in the franchise to go, it’s anyone’s guess which cities will be the focus of future sequels. However, Rowling may have subtly revealed the setting of Fantastic Beasts 3. Earlier this week she updated her Twitter header to feature a shot of a busy street. One fan tweeted: “Jo, could you explain the header?” The author replied: “It’s Rio da Janerio in the 1930s.” Another fan replied: “OMG! Us Brazilians are freaking out right now. Are you preparing something for us?” Rowling responded: “Let’s just say I really ought to be able to spell Rio de Janeiro properly, given how many times I’ve written/typed it in the last few months.” So surely Rowling’s hinting at Fantastic Beasts 3 being set in 1930s Rio? Of course, it’s possible she could be writing a separate novel or screenplay, although the most obvious candidate is the next book in her Strike series – although those stories are not set in that period. Seeing as the five Fantastic Beasts films will span from 1926 to 1945 when Dumbledore defeated Grindelwald in a duel, and the fact that the first two films are set in 1926 and 1927, it makes sense for the third film to take place at some point in the 1930s. No doubt in the next few weeks an official reveal will be made by cast members or director David Yates. Meanwhile, the first reactions to Fantastic Beasts 2 have been overwhelmingly positive. Johnny Depp, who only cameoed in the first film as the villainous Gellert Grindelwald, has a much more prominent role in the sequel. Critics have praised his “outstanding performance”, with one calling it “perfection”. Meanwhile, the visuals and action throughout the film have received high praise, with a number of fans retweeted by Rowling saying The Crimes of Grindelwald was better than Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald will be released in UK cinemas on November 16, 2018.

In last week’s final trailer, the character of Nagini – a Maledictus – was unveiled, as played by Claudia Kim.
She, it turns out, is inflicted with a blood curse that enables her to switch at will between human and snake – although she’s inevitably doomed to eventually end up a permanent serpent, going on to be Voldemort’s right-hand-snake in the Harry Potter stories.
That twist sent shockwaves round the fanbase last week – but it seems there may be more shocks in store.
Posting to Twitter, writer JK Rowling said actor Ezra Miller, who plays Credence Barebone, was stunned by what’s ahead.
“@jk_rowling I would love to see Ezra Miller’s reaction when he read that Claudia was playing Nagini or that Nagini was in this saga?” one follower wrote.
She answered: “That definitely wasn’t Ezra’s biggest shock. #FantasticBeasts.”
So what could be ahead? Fans will have to keep guessing ahead of the sequel’s release next month.
For now, controversy continues over Kim’s casting in the franchise.
It was noted last week that there are only two women of East Asian descent in leading roles in the Harry Potter universe: underused love interest Cho Chang, and now Nagini – who ultimately becomes a Nazi-inspired supervillain’s pet.
Rowling responded: “The Naga are snake-like mythical creatures of Indonesian mythology, hence the name ‘Nagini.’
“They are sometimes depicted as winged, sometimes as half-human, half-snake. Indonesia comprises a few hundred ethnic groups, including Javanese, Chinese and Betawi.”
The film has also faced backlash for the involvement of Johnny Depp, and the lack of acknowledgement or reference to Dumbledore’s homosexuality.
Fans argued of the latter point that there’s no point in Rowling confirming his orientation if it’s never going to be represented in any way on screen or on the page.
The new Fantastic Beasts sees Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler and Alison Sudol reprising their roles; with Zoe Kravitz, Callum Turner and William Nadylam also aboard.
The film is the second of a planned five in the series.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is out on November 16.
In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the final book and two-part film in Rowling’s best-selling series, a number of beloved characters kick the bucket.
Taking place – fictitiously – on May 2, 1998, today marks the 20th anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts, when Harry Potter defeated Lord Voldemort.
And over the last few years Rowling has taken to Twitter on the date each year to apologise for killing off a character.
This year she chose Dobby the house elf, who didn’t actually die in the battle.
Rowling tweeted: “It’s that anniversary again.
“This year, I apologise for killing someone who didn’t die during the #BattleofHogwarts, but who laid down his life to save the people who’d win it.
“I refer, of course, to Dobby the house elf.”
Fans will remember Dobby was murdered by Bellatrix Lestrange while freeing Harry, Ron and Hermione from imprisonment in Malfoy Manor.
The eighth story in the Harry Potter canon is set 19 years after the Battle of Hogwarts.
Currently a hit show on Broadway and in the West End, fans are hopeful Rowling will one day allow it to be a movie too.
Meanwhile Fantastic Beasts 2: The Crimes of Grindelwald is released this November.

Speaking as part of a bBC documentary set to air this weekend, Rowling admitted that Professor Sprout – played by Miriam Margolyes in the films – holds a particularly special place in her heart.
She recalled staying at a friend’s house in 1990, after having started work on the first book about six months earlier.
When her friend went to bed, she stayed up to sketch her character whilst watching a film.
“The reason I can be incredibly precise about when I drew this is because at some point during the time I was watching that movie and drawing this picture, my mother died 250 miles away,” she said.
“I got the phone call the next day to say that she had died. So, this obviously means a great deal to me, this picture.”
Sprout, she added, is “the most maternal or paternal” of Hogwarts’ four heads of houses.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was first published on June 26, 1997 in the UK; and a great deal of commemorative 20th anniversary celebrations have been taking place throughout the year.
This new documentary goes hand-in-hand with a new exhibition at the British Library.
The final film in the series was released in 2011, and its lead star – Daniel Radcliffe – recently released his latest film, Jungle.
Emma Watson, meanwhile, starred this year in Beauty and the Beast.
A History of Magic airs on BBC Two on Saturday at 9pm.
The first book in the Cormoran Strike series, the Cuckoo’s Calling, was reviewed by fellow writers including Val McDermid and James Patterson, before Rowling had been revealed as the true author.
Rowling, 52, wrote to thank them in fake handwriting but later apologised for fooling them when her cover was blown.
She said: “I wasn’t trying to trick anyone or fool anyone. I was just aware that I would be lucky to get away with it for many years. But I certainly hoped I’d be able to get three books out of Robert before anyone knew.”
Explaining why she chose to write under the pseudonym, Rowling said: “I wanted to go back to the beginning. I wanted it to just be about the writing.”
The Cuckoo’s Calling, about private investigator Cormoran Strike, has now been adapted into a BBC One drama with Tom Burke in the lead role and Holliday Grainger as fellow character Robin Ellacott.
The final instalment of the three-part series airs tonight.
And Rowling revealed that the BBC were interested in the Galbraith books even before they knew the author’s true identity.
It meant she knew she would soon have to come clean.
Rowling added: “We had a call from the BBC. That presented ‘Robert’ with his biggest problem which is a really nice problem to have – but things became difficult to sustain quite quickly.”
