Johnny (played by Richard Hawley) took on the deeds to the Rovers Return on Coronation Street last year, following the untimely death of his son Aidan Connor (Shayne Ward).

The previous owners were Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne) and Toyah Battersby (Georgia Taylor), but when the couple split following the revelation the landlady had passed off Eva Price’s (Catherine Tyldesley) baby as their own, the landlord took the offer of ownership from Johnny.

Since then, Johnny has been running the iconic pub with his wife Jenny Connor (Sally Ann Matthews) with the pair even tricking their fellow residents by telling them they are going to renovate the iconic premises of the ITV soap.

Attentions could be diverted in the coming months as Johnny bids farewell to his daughter Kate Connor (Faye Brookes) and tries to help Carla (Alison King) with her mental health, so could the pub see another change of hands?

Alongside Johnny and Jenny, the Rovers punters have been happily served by barmaids Gemma Winter (Dolly-Rose Campbell) and Emma Brooker (Alexandra Mardell), with the latter organising a whole manner of events to get the residents spending more money.

Emma has been seen helping out at the Rovers, as well as training as a hairdresser at the salon run by Weatherfield stalwart, Audrey Roberts (Sue Nicholls).

With the management skills and entrepreneurial spirt within her, it could be Emma who lands the jackpot and takes over the deeds from Johnny in the future, once she’s got some more experience behind her that is.

Speaking to Express.co.uk at the British Soap Awards and ahead of her win as Best Newcomer, actress Alexandra Mardell, 25, hinted her character could become the new landlady of the iconic cobbles pub.

When asked if Emma could become the owner of the Rovers Return, the actress replied: “You never know!

“She does love the rovers, she might and take over one day. But yes, I love working in the Rovers and the salon,” Alexandra explained.

Viewers will have to wait and see if Johnny does give up his beloved strong hold for the sake of his family, but for now, the landlord will be bidding farewell to Carla in upcoming scenes.

Following the powerful and emotive portrayal of psychosis in Friday’s instalment on Coronation Street, Carla was last seen in hospital, having been sedated after threatening to take her own life.

Carla has been blaming herself for the Underworld factory collapse earlier this year, which claimed the life of fan favourite, Rana Habeeb (Bhavna Limbachia).

After her lover Peter managed to talk her down from the Victoria Street fire escape stairs, Carla was assessed by a doctor and upcoming episodes will see her leave the street to attend a treatment clinic away from the cobbles.

Having stuck by Carla’s side, Peter agrees to go with her to be with the woman he loves, with Johnny bidding farewell to the couple as he is also in agreement this is the best move for his daughter.

Range Rover’s 2020 Evoque blends style with sustainability https://briefnews.eu/range-rovers-2020-evoque-blends-style-with-sustainability/ https://briefnews.eu/range-rovers-2020-evoque-blends-style-with-sustainability/#respond Thu, 22 Nov 2018 20:06:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/range-rovers-2020-evoque-blends-style-with-sustainability/

For the last decade or so, Range Rover has built vehicles more akin to posh living rooms that occasionally go off-roading than the rough and tumble Land Rover Defender 90s of yesteryear. That trend continues with the 2020 Evoque, albeit with a number of innovations that will minimize its environmental impact when you decide to literally go over the fields and through the woods to Grandma’s house this holiday.

The new iteration of the Evoque looks a lot like last year’s, it has all the same general stylings that one has come to expect from Range Rover’s line of compact luxury SUVs, including the iconic coupe-like roofline. The 2020 model however includes a bunch of new gadgets like LED head and tail lights and flush-folding door handles.

2020 Evoque 2

The interior has been redesigned to improve legroom (thanks to a slightly longer wheelbase) so that tall folks aren’t constantly banging their knees and increase the trunk’s overall storage space. Instead of leather, you’ll find a host of more environmentally conscious materials such as Kvadrat wool and Dinamica suede on the seats along with recycled plastics and natural material accents by Eucalyptus Textile and Ultrafabrics. As much as 73 pounds of every 2020 Evoque comes from recycled materials.

But don’t let the natural materials fool you. The 2020 Evoque’s interior also features an InControl Touch Pro Duo infotainment system, the InControl remote mobile app, 16-point adjustable seats, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, and an optional 4G hotspot (which also allows for wireless, OTA software updates). It’s also the first Range Rover to offer “Smart Settings” an AI assist system that learns and remembers each driver’s seat, music and climate preferences, resetting them whenever you get into the vehicle.

2020 Evoque 3

You’ll find a host of new features under the hood as well, including a 48-volt (296HP) mild-hybrid powertrain working alongside the 246HP Ingenium four-cylinder gasoline engine. When braking at speeds under 11 mph, the engine is programmed to turn off and allow the regenerative system to harvest energy from the slowing vehicle which can then be used to assist in its subsequent acceleration.2020 Evoque 4

The new Evoque also boasts technologies that we first saw on Range Rovers Discovery Vision concept vehicle. ClearSight Ground View, for example, is based on the Vision’s “transparent bonnet” idea. It uses cameras in the front grille and sideview mirrors to give the driver an 180-degree view of what’s under the front end of the Evoque. Remember folks, always check your undercarriage for cats and other furry stowaways during the winter months.

What’s more, the rear facing camera above the back window doesn’t push its video feed to the console-mounted 12.3-inch infotainment system. Instead it sends it directly to the rearview mirror, which is actually an HD video screen.

We still don’t have word on pricing or availability on the new Evoque. Those details are being revealed at the Chicago Auto Show in February.

Explora the Outdoora: Land Rover’s All-Weather Smartphone https://briefnews.eu/explora-the-outdoora-land-rovers-all-weather-smartphone/ https://briefnews.eu/explora-the-outdoora-land-rovers-all-weather-smartphone/#respond Sun, 25 Feb 2018 10:54:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/explora-the-outdoora-land-rovers-all-weather-smartphone/ land-rover-explore-outdor-phone

–

Luxury cars once came with bulky, built-in factory cell phones that couldn’t be removed. Then automakers tried hawking portable branded phones, until everyone owned a smartphone. Now, Land Rover is trying a branded smartphone that asks, “Does anyone want to go on a hike?”

–

Land Rover’s Explore is an Android smartphone designed to be as rugged as the legendary British SUVs. It’s an ordinary-looking device with some silver accents and Land Rover logos, almost like a larger version of the company’s key fob. At an expected $ 800, it’s no $ 17,000 Vertu wrapped in Bentley leather. (And it will not be sold in the United States.) But it’s supposed to be resistant to water, dust, mud, shocks, low batteries, and poor GPS reception.

–

land-rover-explore-outdor-phone-2

–

The company promises a 4000 milliamp-hour battery (that’s about 25-percent more capacity than an iPhone X) with an optional snap-on 3600-mAh battery. The entire phone is IP68-rated, an electronics standard that dictates it can survive a 1.5-meter (4.9-foot) dip in water for 30 minutes. The 5.0-inch display is coated with Gorilla Glass and able to withstand a nearly six-foot drop without shattering. A host of accessories, including a carabiner hook, external GPS antenna, and bike mount, are available.

–

–

But most of those outdoorsy accessories can be bought for a conventional phone; even the ViewRanger outdoor navigation can be downloaded on the Apple and Android app stores. And Land Rover, for all its adventure cred, still can’t provide customers with reliably functioning electronics in its vehicles. On the plus side, the Explore is relatively affordable, and Land Rover doesn’t make the phone. And we kind of like the idea of showering in a five-star hotel while scrolling Instagram, which, let’s face it, is more like what Land Rover owners actually do.

–

Land Rover operates four off-road driving schools in North America—in Asheville, North Carolina; Carmel, California; Manchester, Vermont; and Montebello, Quebec. Each affords opportunities to drive unpaved terrain ranging from moderately difficult to creepy-crawly. The schools are a profitable enterprise that also serves a bigger purpose: selling new vehicles. Participants can use their personal vehicles or pilot a new Land Rover or Range Rover from the school fleets, but this year the parent company put a little spin on the programs, adding vintage Land Rover Defenders to the school inventories.

–

The idea came from Kim McCullough, Jaguar Land Rover vice president of marketing for North America, a serious enthusiast whose résumé includes participation in Italy’s Mille Miglia revival in a personal Jaguar XK120. She saw this Defender Experience program as a way to help promote Land Rover’s impending 70th anniversary in 2018.

–

Land Rover Defender Experience

–

“Since it is the 70th anniversary, we want to help keep it alive,” said McCullough. “We thought, let’s put it out there and build some awareness.” And, of course, with a new Defender anticipated in the not-too-distant future, there’s more to the awareness aspect than touting Land Rover’s history.

–

Active Heritage

–

These Defenders are definitely not new vehicles. The Defender 90s and 110s are parceled out, one per school, for what is called the Land Rover Heritage Program. The numerical designations relate to their 90- and 110-inch wheelbases. The program is run separately from the standard Land Rover Experience, for which the entire Land Rover brand portfolio—Discovery, Discovery Sport, Evoque, Range Rover, and Range Rover Sport, and Velar—is represented.

–

Let us put a finer point on “not new.” Tracing its roots back to the company’s 1948 origins, the Defender (née Series I) went through a half-dozen evolutionary updates before Land Rover punched its ticket on January 29, 2016. By that time, the Defender 90 had been absent from U.S. showrooms for almost 20 years. And the funky four-door 110, with its external roll bars, was in North America for a single model year, 1993, as a limited edition; 509 were sold in the U.S. and 23 in Canada.

–

Like any out-of-production vehicle, especially one as well loved as this, Defenders have become serious collectibles, commanding escalating prices at auction. “We’ve already seen some going for six figures,” said McCullough. Also commanding six figures: a Series 1 restored by the factory.

–

Rare as they may be here, some two million Defenders found their way into customers’ hands worldwide over the vehicle’s 67-year run, and about 75 percent of them are still in use, according to Land Rover. In the end, although sales were still reasonably strong, profitability kept losing altitude because of high labor costs. As a survivor from another era in manufacturing, the Defender’s assembly entailed too much handwork.

Land Rover Defender Experience

–

The Quail

–

We signed up with the Land Rover school headquartered at the Quail Lodge in California’s Carmel Valley. Our Defender was a hardtop 90, model year 1996, and it was a testament to the assembly standards of its time. The body panels, for example, are secured by rivets, and panel gaps seem to have been conceived for auxiliary ventilation. External door hinges enhance the Defender’s rugged persona and also allow for easy removal of the doors. Another anachronism is that the Defender requires multiple keys: one for the ignition, one for the side door locks, and a third for the gas cap. The interior is spartan by today’s standards—no touchscreen, no navi, no Wi-Fi, minimalist audio—and our example showed signs of its two decades in service.

–

While this is clearly a blast from the past, we are not talking Fred Flintstone here. There’s a 3.9-liter pushrod V-8 under the hood making 182 horsepower and 232 lb-ft of torque, mated to a five-speed manual transmission. The four-wheel-drive system employs a manually locking center differential and open differentials at both ends. The Defender rides a coil-spring suspension with control arms and anti-roll bars front and rear. Minimum ground clearance is 9.0 inches, maximum fording depth 20.0 inches, maximum forward approach angle is 51 degrees, and maximum departure is 36 degrees—figures that would be impressive on any current Land Rover or Range Rover product you can buy new today. There are disc brakes at all four corners, squeezed by four-piston calipers front and two-pistons rear.

–

While these specs aren’t particularly impressive today, particularly in contrast to a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, in the context of their times the Defenders were as rough and ready as any. And if the ’96 Defender seems a little dated, consider its distant ancestor. The design for the original Series I Land Rover was derived from that of a World War II Jeep, and it was primordial by today’s standards. The 1.6-liter pushrod four was rated for 50 horsepower, the suspension employed elliptical leaf springs, and concessions to comfort were few.

–

On the other hand, the Series I box section frame was as solid as a bridge, the electrical system was 12 volts—a rarity at the time—and the four-wheel-drive system was similar to that of our ’96 Defender: open diffs, with a manual two-speed transfer case, a manually locking center differential, and a four-speed manual transmission.

–

Land Rover Defender Experience

–

The Carmel Labyrinth

–

Land Rover’s Carmel Valley school involves a labyrinth of trails in the heavily wooded heights above the valley. During the dry summer months, the trails aren’t particularly difficult; occasional patches of deep dust pose the most significant traction challenges, and those are brief.

–

It becomes more interesting in the winter, when rain makes the trails slurpy, but wet weather had not yet arrived when we made our visit in the late fall. Nevertheless, we emerged with a solid respect for this iconic Land Rover. It had a no-nonsense persona, but its off-road fun-to-drive factor was high.

–

“When you’re driving the Defender,” McCullough observed, “you’re involved. When you’re in a manual Defender, you’re more involved.”

–

Accompanied by Justin Demayo, a Monterey-area native who runs Land Rover’s Carmel Valley school and knows every twist and turn of its trails, we buckled up and rolled out of the parking lot and onto dirt.

–

Two decades equate to old age for most vehicles, but our veteran Defender exhibited no geriatric symptoms as we motored up and down the dusty heights above Quail Lodge. The D90 trudged up even the steepest hills with only occasional brief episodes of wheelspin, motored down equally steep downhills at a comfortable crawl, and generally inspired confidence.

–

Suspension compliance was surprisingly benign, on par with a new Discovery we tried for contrast, at least in the dirt (we didn’t exercise the Defender on pavement). And nothing scraped underneath in the deep ruts we encountered from time to time.

–

Demerits? Very minor. The worm-and-roller hydraulic power steering, though surprisingly tactile, was slow by contemporary standards—3.8 turns lock-to-lock. And for a vehicle with a 92.9-inch wheelbase, the 38.4-foot turning circle seemed more appropriate for a World War II landing craft. More than once we had to execute three-point maneuvers to make it around tight turns without scraping timber, turns we made in one pass with the Disco. But that in no way diminished the day.

–

Land Rover Defender Experience

–

The Price of Play

–

Viewed simply as an automotive novelty, the Defender Experience is an entertaining retro trip, albeit an expensive one—$ 1200 for half a day or $ 1500 to play all day.

–

But as already suggested, there’s more to this program than lending an historic element to the 70th anniversary season. Land Rover CEO Ralf Speth has already acknowledged that an all-new Defender is on the near horizon. The question is what will it be and when. Speth has been quoted as saying that the new Defender will utilize elements from the current Land Rover hardware inventory and that he has driven the prototype, pronouncing it “even more capable” than its predecessor.

–

Land Rover has also let it be known that the resurrection will entail a trio of Defender models, including a high-performance SVR edition heated up by the Jaguar Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations hot-rod shop. Beyond that, it’s all speculation.

–

–

However, it does seem clear that the revivalist Defender will bear little, if any, resemblance to the DC100 concept vehicle that Land Rover displayed at the 2011 Frankfurt auto show. The Defender faithful dismissed that one as wimpy. As McCullough observed, “That’s why we put things out there, to get consumer feedback.”

–

And the Land Rover Heritage Program? “It’s a fun thing to do—keeps the conversation going. And even though it has been 20 years since there’s been a Defender in the U.S., there’s still a core of enthusiast interest.”

LOS ANGELES—When it comes to forward-looking automakers, Jaguar Land Rover sits toward the head of the pack. Its first long-range battery electric vehicle—the Jaguar I-Pace—goes on sale in 2018, and the company was one of the first to announce it would electrify its entire lineup by 2020. That doesn’t mean every new Jaguar and Land Rover will be a BEV, but each model will offer a plug-in hybrid EV option, with 48v “mild” hybrids rounding out the range. Earlier this fall we found out that the first PHEV powertrains will be available in the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport SUVs, and at this year’s LA Auto Show we got the chance to drive one of the preproduction prototypes.

Both the Range Rover P400e and Range Rover Sport P400e use the same 398hp (297kW) powertrain. On the internal combustion side, there’s a 296hp (221kW) 2.0L four-cylinder Ingenium gasoline engine. Between it and the gearbox there’s also an 85kW (116hp) electric motor, fed by a 13.1kWh lithium-ion battery. Both cars have an electric-only range of up to 31 miles (51km).
