When it comes to casting sisters on TV, there’s good, there’s uncanny and then there’s whatever crazy magic is happening over at Roswell, New Mexico between Jeanine Mason and Amber Midthunder (aka Liz and Rosa Ortecho).

“We actually both had these funny kismet moments of people confusing us for each other long before we met,” Midthunder tells TVLine. “When the pilot was coming out, my parents watched the trailer and took a bunch of screenshots — but when they sent them, they were like, ‘Is this you? Is this you?’ And about three of them were actually Jeanine.”

Mason has her own tales of mistaken identity, including the time she was approached by a stranger in a film festival bathroom who wanted to know if she was “the girl from Legion.” (Spoiler alert: She was not.) “I think it was a whole year after that before I found out Amber would be playing my sister in the pilot,” Mason says. “I was like, ‘Why does that name sound so familiar?’ And then it clicked. This was fated! I’d been hearing her name for years!”

And if you thought the confusion would clear up once Mason and Midthunder began working together, well…

“I think the crew is totally freaked out by how similar our mannerisms are becoming,” Mason says. “Even the way we laugh, or the way we use our hands. I’ll say this: It’s more rare than actors choose to admit that you actually get along with someone in a way where you want to be friends beyond the show. I adore that woman, and I plan to adore her for the rest of my existence.”

Adds executive producer Carina Adly Mackenzie, “They naturally look alike, but they also worked on developing certain sisterly mannerisms. When they’re sharing a bed in the motel [in the Season 2 premiere], they sleep the same way. And later on this season, you’ll see them using the same hand gestures. It’s partially magical and partially them being very good at their jobs.” (Perhaps too good?) “We’ve had notes from the studio and the network being like, ‘Can you just say Rosa’s name a few times in this scene, so people don’t think it’s Liz?’”

Unfortunately, Rosa has a lot more to think about than how much she looks like her sister and what her favorite ’00s celebrities are up to in 2020. (“Did you know that Jimmy from Degrassi is a rapper now?!”) She’s also a bipolar teenager struggling with addiction — and that’s on top of all things extraterrestrial.

“She’s always felt like an outsider, and she’s now totally isolated in her town and in her life,” Midthunder says. “Her sickness almost feels like her friend. It’s consistent, it’s comfortable. There’s a reason any addict falls into addiction — in some way, it’s appealing. The problem is that it’s also extremely destructive. She’s seeing that, but she feels helpless. Ten weeks out from Roswell, New Mexico‘s Season 2 premiere, showrunner Carina Adly Mackenzie has surprised fans with exactly five teases about what’s to come.

Popping up on Twitter on Sunday afternoon, Mackenzie warned her followers that she was about to let slip with five teases for Season 2, which arrives Monday, March 16 at 9/8c on The CW, where it will lead out of Supernatural (making its new time slot premiere that same night).

For starters, Mackenzie said that “Helena Ortecho, Liz’s (Jeanine Mason) mom, comes to town for a family dinner,” though no casting for the role was disclosed.

Conversely, the EP did name Arrow and Supernatural alum Madison McLaughlin (photo right) as an upcoming guest star… but without revealing her role. (Was Artemis abducted by aliens before Lian Yu’s explosion? Discuss.)

Among events on the horizon, the self-described “professional Dawson’s Creek stan” said that because she has “always been a fan of spooky Halloween episodes” — and despite the fact that Roswell‘s sophomore run isn’t airing until spring — “we did a spooky episode anyway.” She also teased a “21st birthday flashback” for an unspecified character.

Last but far from least — and speaking of unspecified characters — Mackenzie said that someone “who identifies as straight at the beginning of the season does not identify as straight at the end of the season,” so get to speculating on that one, Roswellians (or whatever y’all call yourselves).

“Am I looking for a job now? What’s up? What’s happening?” That was Nathan Dean Parsons‘ joking-yet-understandable reaction to the events of Roswell, New Mexico‘s first season finale, which ended with Max seemingly sacrificing himself to restore Liz’s long-napping sister Rosa.

TVLine recently caught up with Parsons and co-star Jeanine Mason at The CW’s upfront presentation in New York, where they both shared concerns about Max’s uncertain future.

“It’s not going to be an easy fix,” Mason acknowledged. “It took us nine episodes to get together, so we’ll see how long it takes her to bring him back to life. … I hope she can pull it off!”

Of course, Max’s fate wasn’t the Roswell finale‘s only cliffhanger. Liz’s shocked face upon seeing her sister alive was an accurate tease of the emotions still to come in Season 2.

“It’s been a decade that [Rosa has] been gone, and this is a tiny town where everybody knows everybody else’s business,” Mason said. “It’s going to be an obstacle to figure out how to keep that a secret, or how to reintroduce her [into society]. I don’t know. The thing that comes to mind is: How do you tell a parent that their child is back after a decade of being dead?”

The potential series — penned by Originals scribe Carina Adly MacKenzie — centers on Liz Ortecho (Grey’s Anatomy up-and-comer Jeanine Mason), a jaded biomedical researcher and the daughter of undocumented immigrants who is haunted by a tragic incident. She discovers a shocking truth about her teenage crush (played by Parsons): He’s an alien.

Blackburn, meanwhile, will portray Sgt. Alex Manes, who, after returning home from the Middle East aims to adhere to his father’s expectations, abandoning his dreams and the possibility of a future with the man he loves.

A ‘Roswell’ Reboot Has Been Ordered By The CW https://briefnews.eu/a-roswell-reboot-has-been-ordered-by-the-cw/ https://briefnews.eu/a-roswell-reboot-has-been-ordered-by-the-cw/#respond Thu, 01 Feb 2018 09:49:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-roswell-reboot-has-been-ordered-by-the-cw/ roswell reboot

The CW is officially taking us back to Roswell High School. The broadcast network best known for its slate of popular DC superhero shows, surprisingly sharp comedies, and edgy teen soaps has given a pilot order for the Roswell reboot, which will revive the popular ’90s science-fiction series with an “immigration twist.”

The Roswell reboot has officially landed at The CW, according to Entertainment Weekly. The network has ordered a pilot of the sci-fi soap with an immigration twist, from Originals writer Carina Adly MacKenzie. The series is based on the Melinda Metz book Roswell High, which was the basis for the original ’90s WB and UPN drama.

Here is the logline of the reboot, according to EW:

After reluctantly returning to her tourist-trap hometown of Roswell, New Mexico, the daughter of undocumented immigrants discovers a shocking truth about her teenage crush who is now a police officer: he’s an alien who has kept his unearthly abilities hidden his entire life. She protects his secret as the two reconnect and begin to investigate his origins, but when a violent attack and long-standing government cover-up point to a greater alien presence on Earth, the politics of fear and hatred threaten to expose him and destroy their deepening romance.

While the original Roswell series focused on the high school outsider narrative (a popular theme in ’90s dramas), the reboot will run with an immigration angle, portraying the aliens as persecuted, well, aliens on the run from the government. It’s an issue that’s becoming increasingly popular at The CW, where Jane the Virgin and Supergirl both addressed the growing animosity against immigrants today. In fact, Supergirl is already kind of doing the “aliens as immigrants” metaphor, so it will be interesting to see how the Roswell reboot distinguishes itself.

The original Roswell ran from 1999 to 2002 and was the launching pad for the careers of Shiri Appleby (now appearing on Lifetime’s acclaimed series UnReal), Katherine Heigl (Grey’s Anatomy), Emilie de Ravin (Lost), and Colin Hanks (Fargo). It also starred Gen-X stalwart Jason Behr as the alien teen hiding his identity.

The Roswell reboot joins eight other standalone pilots at The CW this season, including a Charmed reboot, the Ben Stiller project In the Dark, Greg Berlanti’s Spencer, the dysfunctional mortician family dramedy Playing Dead, the female vengeance thriller Skinny Dip, and the Supernatural spin-off Wayward Sisters.

Roswell will be written by MacKenzie, who will executive produce alongside Justin Falvey, Darryl Frank, Lawrence Bender, and Kevin Kelly Brown, an executive producer on the original series.

Your Guide to TV's 100+ Reboots and Revivals: The Twilight Zone, Roswell, The Office, Party of Five and More https://briefnews.eu/your-guide-to-tvs-100-reboots-and-revivals-the-twilight-zone-roswell-the-office-party-of-five-and-more/ https://briefnews.eu/your-guide-to-tvs-100-reboots-and-revivals-the-twilight-zone-roswell-the-office-party-of-five-and-more/#respond Sat, 20 Jan 2018 23:08:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/your-guide-to-tvs-100-reboots-and-revivals-the-twilight-zone-roswell-the-office-party-of-five-and-more/

Hollywood’s obsession with reviving long-gone TV series is showing no signs of slowing down.

In the last few years, dozens of beloved small-screen classics have been brought back from the dead, or at least reworked for new audiences. From Will & Grace and Prison Break, to Dynasty and One Day At a Time, it seems there’s no series safe from the resurrection craze.

Having said that, we’ve compiled a comprehensive roundup of TV’s revivals and reboots, from American Idol‘s imminent return to NBC’s still-in-development continuation of The Office. Even if you’ve scrolled through the gallery before, there are plenty of new additions (Animaniacs! Roswell!) that might pique your interest.

It should be noted, of course, that our roundup only includes TV shows that are being revived; for a list of movies getting reworked as TV series, head over to our TV Adaptations roundup. And we’re always updating these galleries as more projects get announced, so be sure to bookmark this page.

A ‘Roswell’ Reboot is Coming to The CW, With an Immigration Twist https://briefnews.eu/a-roswell-reboot-is-coming-to-the-cw-with-an-immigration-twist/ https://briefnews.eu/a-roswell-reboot-is-coming-to-the-cw-with-an-immigration-twist/#respond Sat, 14 Oct 2017 06:50:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-roswell-reboot-is-coming-to-the-cw-with-an-immigration-twist/ roswell reboot

Things are getting paranormal again at Roswell High. The cult teen TV show from 1999 will be getting a modern reboot at The CW, with an even more timely twist.

This time, instead of following a group of gorgeous and talented — but blindingly white — high school students in the infamous town of Roswell, New Mexico, the Roswell reboot will be given an immigration perspective.

The new Roswell reboot will follow the journey of a daughter of undocumented immigrants who returns to her hometown of Roswell, New Mexico — the real-life site of unexplained phenomena and reported extraterrestrial sightings.

Here’s the reboot’s synopsis from Variety:

The new, one-hour drama series would follow the daughter of undocumented immigrants who reluctantly returns to her tourist-trap hometown of Roswell, New Mexico. There she discovers a shocking truth about her teenage crush who is now a police officer: he’s an alien who has kept his unearthly abilities hidden his entire life. She protects his secret as the two reconnect and begin to investigate his origins, but when a violent attack and long-standing government cover-up point to a greater alien presence on Earth, the politics of fear and hatred threaten to expose him and destroy their deepening romance.

Like the original series, the Roswell reboot will be based on the Roswell High books by Melinda Metz.

The original Roswell series ran from 1999 to 2002 on the WB and UPN, and starred Shiri Appleby (now known for the dark reality-show satire UnReal), a pre-Grey’s Anatomy Katherine Heigl, and a pre-Lost Emilie de Ravin. Other familiar Gen-X faces include Colin Hanks and Jason Behr. The series garnered a cult following over the course of its three seasons for its balance of teen soap drama and paranormal activities — often suitably paired with Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Although I’m a loyal Buffy fanatic, I never watched a single episode of Roswell — though I do appreciate it for launching the careers of Appleby, de Ravin, and Colin Hanks of all people. I came into the Buffy fandom late, so never got to experience the one-two punch of Buffy and  Roswell in the early 2000s.

But the time is ripe for a Roswell reboot, which could bring more attention to the original. The CW has produced hit after hit of smart, self-effacing dramas and comedies, including the overwrought and over-written wonder that is Riverdale — which has its own shades of Buffy. It’s high time they got in on the supernatural game (with a show that’s not named Supernatural) and brought Roswell back. And with Riverdale reportedly introducing supernatural elements, it would be a nifty new pairing for Roswell.

Carina Adly MacKenzie will write and executive produce the Roswell reboot. Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank of Amblin Television will executive produce, alongside Lawrence Bender and Kevin Kelly Brown. No production or premiere date has yet been announced for the new Roswell.

Government Covered-Up Alien UFO Crash At Roswell, Retired McGill Professor Says: Claims He Is ‘100 Percent Certain’ We’ve Been Visited By ETs https://briefnews.eu/government-covered-up-alien-ufo-crash-at-roswell-retired-mcgill-professor-says-claims-he-is-100-percent-certain-weve-been-visited-by-ets/ https://briefnews.eu/government-covered-up-alien-ufo-crash-at-roswell-retired-mcgill-professor-says-claims-he-is-100-percent-certain-weve-been-visited-by-ets/#respond Mon, 23 Jan 2017 20:24:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/government-covered-up-alien-ufo-crash-at-roswell-retired-mcgill-professor-says-claims-he-is-100-percent-certain-weve-been-visited-by-ets/ Aliens land in a UFO

A retired university professor has said he is convinced that the U.S. government is covering up information that aliens have visited Earth and that a flying saucer UFO of extraterrestrial origin crashed at Roswell in 1947. According to Professor Don Donderi, retired McGill University professor, the evidence that an alien UFO crashed at Roswell, New Mexico, in 1947, is convincing.

Donderi, a Ph.D. in psychology from Cornell University, told the Montreal Gazette that the U.S. government is hiding information that it recovered a crashed extraterrestrial craft in the desert near Roswell in New Mexico in July 1947 and that aliens visiting Earth have been abducting people for decades.

He insisted that the evidence shows “beyond a reasonable doubt” that aliens exist. He also claimed to be “100 percent certain” that aliens in UFOs have visited Earth.

“The US government recovered the remains of a crashed unidentified flying object (UFO) or to be more correct, an extraterrestrial vehicle,” he said. “It is believed that they also recovered bodies of dead aliens.”

Donderi, according to Montreal Gazette, teaches a course called UFOs: History and Reality, at McGill. The course reportedly “outlines why UFOs are real and extraterrestrial.”

UFO and alien enthusiasts believe that a flying craft of extraterrestrial origin crashed at a site close to a ranch outside Roswell, New Mexico, in 1948, soon after the end of World War II. The military authorities announced on July 8, 1948, that the wreckage of a crashed “flying disk” was recovered from the site. However, some hours after the initial official announcement, the authorities retracted the statement, saying it was only a weather balloon that crashed.

The media published the second statement, and the public accepted it as truth until the mid-1970s when a UFO investigator and nuclear physicist Stanton T. Friedman met an intelligence officer who had been involved in the recovery and transport of the crashed object to Fort Worth.

Major Jesse Marcel told Stanton that there had been a massive cover-up of the truth and that the object that crashed was a UFO craft of extraterrestrial origin. Marcel claimed that the military authorities lied when they said the crashed object was a weather balloon.

Other individuals who claimed to have witnessed the event came forward in the 1980s. The first was Glenn Dennis, a former mortician, who claimed that dead bodies were recovered from the crash site in Roswell and that autopsies were conducted on the bodies at the restricted Area 51 USAF facility in Nevada.

Other people came forward, saying that alien survivors had been rescued from the alleged crashed extraterrestrial or UFO craft.

Based on testimonies by alleged witnesses, alien and UFO researchers believe that the debris from the crash was transported secretly to Area 51 in the Nevada desert and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio.

The Inquisitr reported recently that Ben Mezrich, author of The 37th Parallel: The Secret Truth Behind America’s UFO Highway, announced that a piece of metal that could be of extraterrestrial origin was recovered from a location near the Roswell UFO crash site. UFO enthusiasts claimed that the metal might have been part of the debris from the crashed UFO.

Mezrich announced that the piece of metal had been sent to a laboratory for analysis.

Onderi said that based on evidence offered by witnesses, the claim that UFOs exist has been “established beyond reasonable doubt.”

“Some of what people report as UFOs are extraterrestrial vehicles. That proposition, I believe, is established beyond reasonable doubt.”

He also insisted that the claim that the alien UFOs were manned by extraterrestrial beings has also been “established beyond a reasonable doubt.”

“Proposition two is that some of the extraterrestrial vehicles have ET crews, and proposition three is that some of these ET crews ‘catch and release’ humans to study them, so-called alien abductions,” he said.

UFO alien abduct human
Proposition that aliens in UFOs have been abducting humans for decades is probably true, McGill University professor says [Image by Lassedesignen/Shutterstock]

“Proposition two, I think, is established beyond a reasonable doubt, and proposition three is bound on probabilities,” he continued. “I know many people. I’d say 10, at least, who have claimed to be abducted. And in many cases, I respect their claims because I think they’re based on sound evidence.”

Donderi said that the government was covering up alien and UFO evidence because of the earth-shaking implications of the suggestion that Earth could be under surveillance by extraterrestrial civilizations more advance than ours.

He appeared to confirm claims that government scientists have been working secretly for decades in restricted facilities, such as Area 51, to reverse-engineer the advanced alien propulsion technology of UFO spacecraft allegedly recovered from the crash sites.

“The technology involved is extremely advanced,” he said. “The implications for human society are incredible and possibly upsetting because we are under surveillance by technologically superior beings from other planets.”

According to Donderi, the most unnerving aspect of the issue of aliens and UFOs was that we do not understand the motives of the alleged aliens. We have no idea why we are being observed, and we do not have the military-technological capability to defend ourselves against them if they decide to attack and take over Earth.

“We don’t know how to do what they do. We don’t know what their motives are or their interests are,” he said. “And at the moment, as far as I know, we don’t have any active defenses or preparations to deal with the situation.”

“So it’s obviously upsetting,” he said. “Secrecy is because when governments, any government, gets hold of new technology, and want to figure out how it works, their first interest is protecting their own turf on this and not sharing it with the world.”

Roswell UFO Crash Was ‘Real’: Government Cover-Ups Continue For Fear Of Social Meltdown, MUFON Exec Claims https://briefnews.eu/roswell-ufo-crash-was-real-government-cover-ups-continue-for-fear-of-social-meltdown-mufon-exec-claims/ https://briefnews.eu/roswell-ufo-crash-was-real-government-cover-ups-continue-for-fear-of-social-meltdown-mufon-exec-claims/#respond Sun, 22 Jan 2017 17:54:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/roswell-ufo-crash-was-real-government-cover-ups-continue-for-fear-of-social-meltdown-mufon-exec-claims/ ufo crashed at an angle

The world of UFO (Unidentified Flying Object) research is full of conspiracy theories and partial truths that color its history all the way back to when the modern UFO era began with the reported crash of a UFO outside of tiny Roswell, New Mexico, in 1947. Jan Harzan, executive director at MUFON (Mutual UFO Network), described by Forbes magazine contributor Jim Clash as “America’s premier investigator of the phenomenon,” showed no reluctance in proclaiming that the Roswell Incident was not just some easily dismissed mass hallucination or collective delusion over a man-made object. He also has some strong thoughts on why the government insists on leaving the truth out there.

After talking about a couple of high-profile UFO cases, the Travis Walton abduction and the Rendlesham Forest Incident, Clash asked Harzan if the Roswell Incident was real or a hoax?

“Real,” he replied. “Get a copy of the video presentation of Recollections of Roswell filmed by MUFON member and well-known UFO researcher Stanton Friedman. It is interviews with some 30 survivors of Roswell, including first-hand witnesses, their spouses and their children. What they tell you will send chills up your spine.

“If you don’t believe something extraordinary happened after watching this video, then nothing will convince you. I can tell you this: It was no weather balloon.”

The story of the Roswell UFO crash, although not the beginning of government conspiracy theories (for a more complete history on such, read Kathryn S. Olmsted’s 2011 treatment of the subject, Real Enemies: Conspiracy Theories and American Democracy, World War I to 9/11), was the nexus event that would marry conspiracy theories and UFO sightings. This was due to the actual incident itself, the crash, being reported in a local newspaper, according to the Roswell UFO Museum, as the recovery of the U.S. Army Air Force’s recovery of a “flying disk.”

The original press story was rescinded later the same day (July 8, 1947) and replaced with a second press release on July 9 noting that a crashed experimental weather balloon had been mistakenly identified by the military as a downed flying saucer.

Over the years, though, eyewitnesses and people who worked on or claimed to have an association with the Roswell Incident have shared accounts of UFO wreckage, the existence of aliens at the crash site, and various military machinations and cover-ups that sometimes lead to Area 51 in Nevada or Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, sites with UFO stories and conspiracy theories of their own.

About those government cover-ups. Clash wanted to know Harzan’s thinking on why governments were so reticent to disclose information about the possibility of alien visitation.

Harzan admitted that “the real answer is we don’t know.”

He went on, “One possible reason is because they believe, rightly or wrongly, that Earth’s population is not ready for such a revelation. Other thoughts are that the knowledge would create widespread panic, cripple the stock market and end religion as we know it.”

It has long been contended that just the knowledge of intelligent aliens being extant in the universe will shake the very foundations of the world’s great religions, causing a worldwide crisis of faith. But not all religious leaders believe aliens will necessarily upend religions. Back in 2014, Jesuit Brother Guy Consolmagno, the just-appointed new president of the Vatican Observatory Foundation, said, according to Catholic News Service (via the Christian Post) that he believed it was just a matter of time before aliens were discovered. He said that, instead of prompting pandemonium, the discovery would likely facilitate the questioning of God’s relationship to intelligent beings outside our own planet.

But the world’s religions and financial systems are but a couple of the many organizational and cultural underpinnings that might become unmoored. Jan Harzan believes there is a more urgent reason for governments to cover up the existence of UFOs and aliens.

“Another possible reason is that the technology these beings have is so far advanced – whether it be faster-than-light travel, time travel or other far-advanced technology – that it poses a national security threat to America, especially if these capabilities were to fall into enemy hands. I tend to think it is this latter reason.”

Of course, another reason exists — that UFOs and aliens are not and have never been “real.” People like Jan Harzan would say that evidence exists to suggest that this is not a supportable reason. And a conspiracy theorist would say that aliens and UFOs not actually existing is exactly what they — governments, secret agencies, organizations, aliens — would want you to think.
