In a briefing held before today’s presentation, Ubisoft Bordeaux, the studio leading development on the project, described Basim as the most agile assassin in franchise history. He’ll have new abilities to assist him in avoiding detection, some of which you can see on display in the cinematic trailer Ubisoft shared today. An integral part of Basim’s kit is Enkidu, his pet eagle. Like Senu in Origins, Enkidu can scout ahead for you to spot potential threats, but new to Mirage is that there will be archers who can spot and take out your feathery friend. In addition to new gadgets, including smoke bombs and poison mines, Basim will also have the ability to briefly slow down time and plot out multiple assassinations.
With the action returning primarily to a single city – Baghdad circa 861 CE – parkour will play a much bigger role than in more recent games. Ubisoft Bordeaux said Basim would be one of the fastest free runners in franchise history, with a move set that includes both new and returning tricks. The story, meanwhile, will focus on The Hidden Ones, the organization that predates the Assassin Brotherhood and will see Shohreh Aghdashloo (The Expanse, Destiny 2) play Basim’s mentor, Roshan.
When it arrives next year, Assassin’s Creed Mirage will be available on PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Amazon Luna and PC. In the meantime, fans can look forward to The Last Chapter. The free DLC will arrive later this year and complete the story of Valhalla.

Gautama Buddha said he knew the end was coming. At the age of 80, he had his last meal — either pork or mushrooms, depending on how you translate ancient texts — and died of food poisoning. His body was burned sometime around 543 B.C. on a pyre of sandalwood in northeast India, and as his disciples breathed in the smell of incense the squabbling was already starting: Who would get to keep pieces of his bone and body as relics?
That’s when Khema, a favorite female disciple of Buddha’s, grabbed the master’s left upper canine tooth from the ashes, according to ancient scripts like the Dathavamsa, or “Chronicle of the Tooth,” written by unknown authors in A.D. 310. That one tooth would endure for thousands of years, growing steadily in myth and importance amid war, theft and celebration.
Khema took the tooth across India to the southeastern coastal kingdom of Kalinga, where King Brahmadatta — despite being Hindu — accepted the relic. It was venerated in the capital, Dantapuram — which translates as Tooth City — for more than 800 years. A fourth-century king, Guhasiva, questioned Buddhist worship of the tooth, then converted to Buddhism, and with the zealousness of a recent convert immediately began persecuting followers of the old gods.
The raja was so impressed by the tooth that he too became a Buddhist, followed en masse by his army.
That aroused the anger of neighboring Hindu King Pandu, who’d grown fed up with the tooth worship, and he sent a loyal raja — along with an army — to capture the canine. To his dismay, the raja was so impressed by the tooth that he too became a Buddhist, followed en masse by his army. Nevertheless, the raja brought the relic and Guhasiva to the king, who immediately ordered the tooth be thrown into a pit of red-hot charcoal. “The order was obeyed, but by the mystical power of the relic a lotus-flower of the size of a chariot wheel arose above the flames, and the sacred tooth, emitting rays which ascended through the skies and illumined the universe, alighted on the top,” writes José Gerson da Cunha in the 1875 Memoir on the History of the Tooth‑relic of Ceylon. After more successful trials, the stubborn king finally accepted the relic and teachings of the Buddha, building another temple for the tooth — which was eventually returned to its home in Dantapuram.
The tooth wars were just beginning. Soon a king from the north attacked to capture the relic. He was defeated, but more attackers followed, besieging the city. To keep the tooth safe, it was smuggled out of the city — hidden, according to legend, in Guhasiva’s daughter’s hair — making it all the way to King Mahasena of Ceylon, now known as Sri Lanka. It was venerated in its new home and in 1268 was moved to the mountainous capital of Kandy.
In 1560, Christian Portuguese colonizers captured the kingdom. “Amongst the spoils of the principal temple they brought to the Viceroy a tooth mounted in gold, which was generally said to be the tooth of an ape, but which these idolaters regarded as the most sacred of all objects of adoration,” writes the 16th-century historian Diogo do Couto. The King of Burma offered an immense ransom of gold for the relic, but a Catholic archbishop, animated by the Inquisition, ordered that the tooth be burned, ground to dust and thrown into a river in what Gerson da Cunha describes as “the point of contact between the sublime and the ridiculous.”
But the tooth bested the archbishop, as the legend goes, appearing again in a lotus flower safely in Kandy. Locals have faith it has remained there ever since — aside from being briefly smuggled out during a rebellion against invading British forces — in the Dalada Maligawa, or the Temple of the Tooth. The British eventually captured the city and, with it, the sacred relic. “The effect of its capture was astonishing, and almost beyond the comprehension of the enlightened,” wrote Dr. John Davy of the Ceylon Medical Service in 1821. To the local Buddhists, the loss of the tooth would have been as bad as the loss of their kingdom.
Even today, visitors to Kandy can visit the Temple of the Tooth, or witness the Esala Perahera, where costumed elephants and worshippers parade through the city praying that the tooth will send 10 days of rainfall before the full August moon. And Sri Lankans still hold it in the highest reverence. Kandy tour guide Nimal Kariyawasam remembers visiting the temple almost every week to offer flowers and pray when he was a child: “It’s the most important place for us. Like how Muslims go to Mecca and Christian people go to some other places.” He goes to the Tooth Temple.
In 1998, at the height of conflict between the Sri Lankan government and the mainly Hindu Tamil rebel forces, three suicide bombers struck the Dalada Maligawa, killing 11 people. A Kandy resident quoted in The New York Times after the attack said: “You terrorists, kill us, eat us, but don’t attack our shrines where Buddha lives.”

Former Liverpool and Switzerland defender Stephane Henchoz has slammed likely new Swiss captain Granit Xhaka by claiming he does not represent the “traditional” country – because of his Albanian roots.
Arsenal midfielder Xhaka was born in Basel, Switzerland, to Albanian parents from Serbia and rose through the ranks of his local team FC Basel and the Swiss youth teams to gain 66 caps and score 10 goals for his country by the age of 25.

Xhaka was a pivotal part of Switzerland’s recent World Cup 2018 run in Russia and seems the most likely choice to overtake the captaincy from Stephan Lichtsteiner, once the latter retires, for national team boss Vladimir Petković.
However, former Switzerland international Stephane Henchoz has other ideas, and says the player does not represent the country for which he himself won 72 caps at the heart of defense from 1993 to 2006.
Speaking to Swiss-German daily Blick, Henchoz said: “He’s a regular player at Arsenal, but I think a captain must represent Switzerland and the team. Xhaka doesn’t.”
He continued: “Players like (Yann) Sommer, Lichtsteiner or (Fabian) Schar, who represent traditional Switzerland, could feel excluded, just like fans who might not be able to identify with the team.
“The Swiss players without a migration background and Swiss fans, they would feel marginalized.”
Henchoz’s words will stoke the fire of a red-hot debate surrounding Swiss players’ identities. During this summer’s World Cup, Xhaka hit the headlines by the scoring the equalizer against Serbia before wheeling away to make the sign of the double-headed eagle with his hands – in reference to the Albanian flag.
Further controversy ensued when teammate Xherdan Shaqiri, an ethnic Kosovar-Albanian, the netted a stoppage time winner and darted off to mark the goal with the same winged celebration. Both were fined CHF 10,000 (US$ 10,000) for their actions by FIFA.
Shaqiri offered his apologies at a press conference on Tuesday, telling reporters: “It’s all about the excitement…People could give different interpretations to my jubilation. If this gesture could hurt the sensitivity of the people who watched the game… I’m sorry.”
Earlier, the club director of Crvena Zvezda, of Belgrade, who will play Shaqiri’s Liverpool in their Champions League tie, said the player would face “unbelievable psychological pressure” when the two sides meet.

I’ve been a musician for the past 20 years, but I’ve been an electronic musician for a lot less than that. I use Apple’s Logic Pro and a variety of software synthesizers to record songs these days, but coming from an electric guitar, I’ve missed the natural expressiveness that comes from playing a traditional instrument—particularly a stringed one.
Yes, you can create amazing expressive sounds with software, but there’s just something about having that direct connection from your fingers to the amp or speakers that can’t be replicated.

Magician Harry Corbett bought the original Sooty from a stall on Blackpool’s North Pier as a present for his son Matthew in 1948.
The bear made his television debut four years later. By then Harry had covered his ears and nose with soot to make him show up better on black and white TV – giving the puppet his name.
He was later joined by dog Sweep and panda Soo and became famous for his catchphrases including “Izzy, whizzy, let’s get busy”.
When Harry retired in 1976 Matthew took over the reins. When he retired in 1998, entertainer Richard Cadell became the puppeteer.
Yesterday Richard was in Blackpool with Sooty to celebrate his 70th anniversary. A birthday party was organised on the pier for his fans, followed by a special show.
The Guinness Book of Records says that shows involving Sooty make him the longest running children’s TV programme in the country.
Richard said: “It’s just incredible how much love there is for the Sooty Show. It’s not just a kids’ show, adults love it too.
“It’s great that it’s still going. The longer Sooty survives, the more popular he becomes.”
Solo: A Star Wars Story hits theaters this May, and the character everyone is the most excited to see isn’t Han Solo. It’s Lando Calrissian.
Lando, initially played by Billy Dee Williams and now Donald Glover, has been a huge force (no pun intended) in the Star Wars universe. His personality, good looks, and roguish charm have secured him the honor of being one of the most influential and coolest Star Wars characters of all time. But what many don’t realize is how much Lando’s character stems from another popular genre created before Star Wars hit theaters – blaxploitation.
Lando’s characterization and his style owe a huge debt to blaxploitation. But Lando also adds another layer to the conversation blaxploitation engages in about black images in the media. How does Lando, colloquially called a “space pimp” by fans, contribute to the conversation and in what ways does he actually hinder how blackness is viewed in film? To mediate further on these questions, let’s start with the beginning of blaxploitation itself.

George Lucas’ films from the early 1970s, THX 1138 and American Graffiti, put him on the map as a filmmaking powerhouse. Interestingly enough, the early 1970s is when blaxploitation also became powerful in its own right, laying the foundations for Lucas’ Cloud City swindler.
During the early ‘70s, film sales were waning dramatically. With more white audience members resorting to television and moving away from the cities (where the big theaters were) and into the suburbs, studios began catering towards black audiences, who were moving into the cities and had limited alternatives for entertainment. The genre that would become blaxploitation kicked off with Melvin Van Peebles’ 1971 hit Sweet Sweetback’s Badasssss Song. Being the first of its kind, the film was initially a long-shot for success.
“With no such thing as a marketing budget, Van Peebles released the film’s Earth, Wind & Fire soundtrack before the film, and he would rely on the oral tradition, using strong word-of-mouth support, to help promote Sweetback to eager urban audiences,” wrote The Root’s Todd Boyd. “When the dust cleared, the film’s success made Hollywood pay attention to the existence of an untapped audience. This set in motion a process that would give birth to a genre eventually referred to as ‘blaxploitation’ going forward.”
The introduction of black men and women as leaders of their own stories cemented blaxploitation’s popularity, despite the genre’s harmful themes, such as physical and sexual abuse, hypersexuality, linking blackness and inner-city life to crime and drug use, and hypermasculinity. The genre, which created legendary films like Shaft, Coffy, Cleopatra Jones, and Superfly provided black actors and black audiences a way to create and consume stories starring black characters that would gain mainstream appeal. Several big names in entertainment participated in the genre’s development, like Sidney Poitier, who starred in two sequels to In the Heat of the Night that would serve as a precursor to blaxploitation, They Call Me Mr. Tibbs! and The Organization.
By 1972, Bill Dee Williams was already a Hollywood star and the chief arbiter of cool; his roles in Brian’s Song and Lady Sings the Blues cemented him as a huge talent and as a suave, debonair sex icon. But he also starred in blaxploitation films such like The Final Comedown, Hit! and The Take. Even in these films, Williams also played a compassionate hero looking for justice, further cementing his status as the new king of black Hollywood.
His brand of cool put him on Lucas’ radar, who wrote “Actor – Billy Dee Williams – Cloud City leader” in his Empire Strikes Back story notes.
In the book, The Making of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, J.W. Rinzler wrote that Williams’ sex appeal is what secured him the role of Lando. “His romantic onscreen image is what got Williams the part, according to [Empire Strikes Back director Irvin] Kershner, who says he ‘really looks like a Mississippi riverboat hustler. Billy can do that charm fantastically.”
Ironically, the description of a “Mississippi riverboat hustler” can read as racially-charged, despite Lucas’ irritation at Star Wars being criticized as being racist due to its all-white cast. While Lando is supposed to be a character that acts independently from mainstream black caricature, Lando is still defined by his blackness.
“[Filmmaker, writer, and George Lucas biographer] Dale Pollock reports that Lucas was ‘still smarting from criticism that Star Wars was racist,’ so he ‘conceived of Lando as a suave, dashing black man in his thirties,’” wrote Kevin J. Wetmore Jr., author of The Empire Triumphant: Race, Religion and Rebellion in the Star Wars Films. “The irony is that Billy Dee Williams was interested in the role precisely because the character wasn’t specifically black – there is nothing inherent in the script that makes Lando a person of color, other than the fact that specified in the script is that half the residents of Bespin are black. Of course, in the final version, only two or three residents of Bespin are black.”
Lando further defines the mainstream image of blackness as being one synonymous with coolness and slickness. But with that image comes negative associations of blackness; being shifty, dangerous, and untrustworthy. It’s unclear if Lucas was directly inspired by blaxploitation, but blaxploitation’s pervasiveness certainly informs Lando’s character, from the cape to his roguish personality. There’s a reason why many fans refer to Lando as a pimp in space.

While we have a number of treatments available for clinical depression, many of them have a significant side effects, and a lot of people struggle to find a drug that they respond to. The situation is made worse by our limited understanding of the biology underlying depression. We don’t know how to create targeted drugs, so most of the available treatments are blunt instruments that can take weeks to months before having an effect.
In that light, it came as a bit of a shock when we discovered a drug we’d been using recreationally and for anesthesia could lift the symptoms of depression in less than 24 hours. Unfortunately, the drug in question, ketamine, also has a collection of unpleasant side-effects, and we had no idea how it was working.
But there’s been significant progress in unravelling the confusion over ketamine, with researchers identifying a ketamine derivative that tackles depression with far fewer side effects. And this week, a team of researchers at China’s Zhejiang University announced that they’ve figured out where in the brain ketamine acts when it blocks depression, a finding that gives us significant insights into the biology of the disorder.

Wondering how Lucasfilm and Disney would handle that long-in-the-making Han Solo movie? You now have an idea of what to expect. They’ve released the full teaser trailer for Solo: A Star Wars Story… and it’s definitely Han. Alden Ehrenreich may not sound that much like Harrison Ford, but the clip otherwise gives a good feel for how the iconic smuggler got started — yes, he was always an overconfident troublemaker saved by his talent, luck and good intentions.
The teaser also offers peeks at Game of Thrones‘ Emilia Clarke as Qi’Ra, who “knows” what Han really is, as well as Woody Harrelson (Tobias Beckett) recruiting Han for a fateful crew. Naturally, you get a good look at Star Wars mainstays like Lando (played by Donald Glover) and Chewie.
Solo premieres on May 25th. Will it succeed? It’s hard to say. Like Rogue One, this movie isn’t obliged to conform to the style of the core Star Wars saga. It’s likewise filling in backstory for a character that many fans consider sacrosanct (see: “Han shot first”). It has Empire Strikes Back‘s Lawrence Kasdan as a writer and Ron Howard as director, however, so the storytelling talent is there. It’s mainly a matter of execution.

Kodak’s stock price has tripled since Tuesday as the company announced plans to develop a new blockchain-based digital rights management platform for photographers. Called KodakOne, the new platform, which isn’t available yet, will allow photographers to publicly register their rights in digital photographs on an immutable blockchain.
The platform will include a digital currency called Kodak Coin that will be used to make licensing payments. There’s an initial coin offering scheduled for January 31.
“KodakOne provides continual Web crawling in order to protect the IP of its members,” the KodakOne website says. “Where unlicensed usage of images is detected, KodakOne can efficiently manage the post-licensing process.”
