<p>That fancy <a target="_blank" href="https://www.engadget.com/2017/11/20/roomba-vacuums-now-work-with-ifttt/">new Roomba</a> you got over the holidays could help suss out your home&#8217;s <a target="_blank" href="https://www.engadget.com/2014/09/01/wifi-physics-signal-reception/">WiFi weak spots</a> this month. A forthcoming patch will add a wireless coverage map to the Roomba&#8217;s vacuum heat map. From the sounds of it, the test group for this new feature could be relatively tiny.</p>
<p>The iRobot Beta pool is limited to folks with the pricey Roomba 900 series, and according to the company (<a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnet.com/news/roombas-will-soon-sweep-your-home-for-weak-wifi-signals/">via <em>CNET</em></a>), there may only be 100 &#8211; 200 initial testers. From there, future Beta pools could have between 10 and 20 percent of iRobot users. Hopefully that includes DJ Roomba at some point, too.</p>

<p>Softbank may be best known as one of Japan&#8217;s top phone carriers, but their recent behind-the-scenes investments make it clear they want something more. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-07-25/softbank-is-said-to-take-stake-in-roomba-maker-in-tech-buildout"><em>Bloomberg Technology</em></a> reports that the Japanese company has invested in iRobot, the manufacturer of the robot vacuum Roomba, with a stake of less than 5 percent. iRobot recently reported <a target="_blank" href="http://media.irobot.com/2017-07-25-iRobot-Reports-Strong-Second-Quarter-Financial-Results">strong second-quarter results</a>.</p>
<p>This isn&#8217;t the first robotics company that Softbank has put some money into. Just last month, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.engadget.com/2017/06/08/softbank-boston-dynamics-alphabet-google-robots-schaft/">the phone carrier purchased Boston Dynamics from Google</a>, along with all of its robots. Softbank also has found success with its companion robot, Pepper. While we had mixed results in our <a target="_blank" href="https://www.engadget.com/2015/09/18/pepper-robot-a-kid/">interactions with the companion robot</a>, it appears that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.recode.net/2017/1/4/14171436/softbank-robot-pepper-sales-brick-and-mortar-retail-ces">Pepper is actually helping drive sales</a> at physical retail locations.</p>
<p>This latest investment by Softbank confirms that it really is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.engadget.com/2016/08/05/softbank-japans-most-interesting-tech-company/">one of the most interesting tech companies out there</a>. So many Japanese companies stagnated because of advances in technology that they simply couldn&#8217;t keep up with (such as the switch from film cameras to digital). It&#8217;s clear that Softbank is determined to future proof itself as much as possible, and it thinks that future lies in robots. It&#8217;s only a matter of time before we have to start calling it &#8220;the Japanese robotics giant&#8221; instead of &#8220;phone carrier.&#8221;</p>

<p>How do you know if your Roomba has cleaned every inch of your floor? If you have one of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.engadget.com/2015/10/30/roomba-980-review/">wirelessly connected</a> series 900 <a target="_blank" href="https://www.engadget.com/2016/08/04/irobots-roomba-960-is-its-cheaper-app-driven-robot-vacuum/">Roombas</a>, you&#8217;ll start getting &#8220;Clean Map&#8221; reports through the iRobot Home app for Android and iOS. The machines now map the parts of your home they&#8217;ve cleaned by combining adaptive navigation with visual localization. You&#8217;ll get those maps as part of the new reports, along with how much time the Roomba spent vacuuming and what the dirtiest parts of your house are. The app can now also send you push notifications on the robot&#8217;s cleaning status. </p>
<p>Series 900 Roombas will soon be able to obey Alexa commands, as well. Sometime in the second quarter of this year, you&#8217;ll be able to start, stop and pause the vacuuming robots by speaking to the Amazon assistant. All you have to do is issue simple voice commands, such as &#8220;Alexa, ask Roomba to begin cleaning&#8221; to activate or deactivate the machine.</p>
