There will never be another George Romero, and the filmmaker’s death in 2017 left a big hole in the world of movies. But Romero’s legacy lives on through his work, and it might continue on into the future thanks to unreleased material. Romero’s widow Suzanne Desrocher-Romero has revealed that the Night of the Living Dead filmmaker left behind round 50 unproduced scripts, as well as a completed film from 1973 that most filmgoers have never seen.
We all miss George Romero, the filmmaker who gave birth to the zombie genre and worked outside the Hollywood system nearly his entire career. When Romero died in July of 2017, it was sad to think we’d never see another new film from the director. But now, it looks like that might not be true. In an interview with ComicBook.com, Romero’s wife Suzanne Desrocher-Romero dropped the surprising revelation that the late filmmaker left behind a wealth of unproduced scripts, and even a complete movie that’s never been released.
George has many scripts. We have very many scripts that he’s written. And so, you just never know what’s gonna pop up,” Desrocher-Romero said. “[Road of the Dead] is in the works, I think. I think it’s sputtered a little bit, but we’ll see what happens. But we have a lot.” Road of the Dead is a script Romero wrote with Matt Birman, which Birman was supposed to direct. Think of it as Mad Max, with zombies. But that’s not all. Desrocher-Romero added:
“George was a prolific writer. He loved to write, and we have 40, 50 scripts that he’s written, and a lot of it is very good. He had a lot to say, and he still does, because I’m gonna make sure that he does. It’s my mission.”
I can’t even begin to imagine what these scripts are. I doubt they’re all movies set in Romero’s Dead universe, and I have no idea if Desrocher-Romero will be able to get even half of these produced. But the prospect of new Romero-related material is certainly enticing. And while these unproduced scripts may never get off the ground, there is an unseen Romero work that we could all be enjoying very soon.
“We have a film that he shot in 1973 that most people haven’t seen. A handful of people have seen this film,” Desrocher-Romero continued. “We’re gonna restore it, and we’re gonna show it to Romero cinephiles. It’s a scary movie, but it’s not a horror movie, and it’s about ageism. Anyway, he has a cameo in it, and it’ll be fun. And we’ll show the movie, or get it distributed. It’ll be a project that the foundation’s gonna do. I think it’s the first project we’re gonna do actually.”
Desrocher-Romero also added that this unreleased Romero film is “not a zombie movie,” so don’t expect anything of that nature. Whatever this secret Romero film is, we’ll hopefully know more about it soon.

The Living Dead, an unfinished George Romero zombie novel, will infect bookstores in 2019. Romero died last year before he could complete writing. Now, The Shape of Water novelization author Daniel Kraus will finish the book in time for release.
The Night of the Living Dead director and the father of the zombie movie as we know it, died last year at the age of 77. Romero’s legacy lives on, and it will continue to do so with an upcoming novel, The Living Dead. Romero dabbled with the book off and on for over a decade, and died before he could complete it. Now, EW reports Daniel Kraus, who co-wrote the novelization of Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water, will pick up where Romero left off.
“Some of [the book] was in tremendous, publish-ready state, ” Kraus told Ew. “Other parts, near of the end of what he wrote, were sketchier, clearly intended to be fleshed out later.”Kraus adds:
“Only half the job I’m doing is finishing this book..The other half is putting George back together, in a sense — not just from reading his every obscure interview and analyzing his every obscure work, but also immersing myself in the art that he loved. I’m studying his favorite movies, watching his favorite operas, listening to his favorite music, all in an attempt to find in them the inspirations he might have found. I’m taking thematic and structural cues from these works and working them into the book. It’s not like having George next to me, but it’s what I have, and I’m treasuring every moment of it.”
The novel will be yet another addition to Romero’s Dead universe, which began with Night of the Living Dead (which recently hit Blu-ray from Criterion), and continued on with Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead and many more. Like all of Romero’s zombie-related work, it will blend horror with social commentary. It will also feature a nuclear submarine, which is pretty damn cool. Kraus reveals that Romero next wanted to make another zombie film. Not just any zombie film, but a “film noir, complete with black-and-white photography and a 1.33:1 aspect ratio.”
It’s very disappointing that we’ll never get to see that. At least we’ll have The Living Dead, though, which is slated to hit bookstores in Fall 2019.
Read the full The Living Dead plot synopsis below.
On October 24th, John Doe rises from the dead. Assistant Medical Examiner Luis Acocella and his assistant Charlene Rutkowksi are vivisecting him when it happens, and so begins a global nightmare beyond comprehension.
Greer Morgan is a teenager living in a trailer park, and when the dead begin their assault, the true natures of her neighbors are revealed. Chuck Chaplin is a pretty-boy cable-news anchor, and the plague brings sudden purpose to his empty life.
Karl Nishimura is the helmsman of the U.S.S. Vindicator, a nuclear submarine, and he battles against a complete zombie takeover of his city upon the sea. And meanwhile, a mysterious woman named Etta Hoffmann records the progress of the epidemic from a bunker in D.C., as well as the broken dreams and stubborn hopes of a nation not ready to give up.
Spread across three separate time periods and combining Romero’s biting social commentary with Kraus’s gift for the beautiful and grotesque, the book rockets forward as the zombie plague explodes, endures, and finally, in a shocking final act, begins to radically change.

Conor McGregor has been slammed by Khabib Nurmagomedov’s manager Ali Abdelaziz for his criticism of Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Earlier this week, McGregor branded his most recent opponent a ‘p***y’ for seemingly pulling a u-turn on having a mixed martial arts fight.
Abdelaziz believes McGregor’s latest verbal jab at Mayweather is hypocritical and has accused ‘The Notorious’ of ducking several fights.
“It’s crazy @TheNotoriousMMA everyone p****s when the guys ducked everyone that can beat him,” he tweeted.
“Frankie Edgar, Khabib, and never defended his titles. He only fight (sic) guys stylelisticaly good for him.
“And his coaches only talk about guys he can’t beat. Not sure who’s the pussy here.”
Nate Diaz has refused to fight until the UFC brass approach him in a respectable manner.
“I’m not fighting because I am a fighter. You’re fighting because someone’s telling you to fight,” 32-year-old Diaz said during an appearance on the Outside The Box podcast.
“I’ll fight whenever the f**k I wanna fight. That’s because I’m a G, n**ga, I’m a fighter myself.
“I ain’t trying to do what nobody says, I’ll do what I say. And I will fight when I’m approached respectably.”
UFC middleweight title contender Yoel Romero has claimed he wasn’t surprised by Michael Bisping’s loss to Georges St-Pierre.
“It’s not a surprise for anybody, it’s not a surprise, it’s not a surprise,” ‘The Soldier of God’ said during an appearance on The MMA Hour.
“I knew that Michael Bisping didn’t have good wrestling or grappling, I knew this guy had nothing for St-Pierre.
“And I knew St-Pierre would beat him and go out again.”

Multiple Doom-related stories landed on the nerd newswire on Wednesday, and they focused on decidedly different eras of the decades-old series. Bethesda announced a significant freebie for the game’s 2016 version, while original Doom fans received a pretty random trivia reveal from none other than John Romero himself.
The shooting series’ co-creator and level designer took to his official blog on Wednesday as a response to an informal Twitter poll he’d posted days earlier. Romero had asked fans which of his old game series they’d like to hear “a piece of trivia” about, and 40 percent of roughly 2,000 votes were cast for Doom. He responded by unearthing a previously unrevealed story about the game’s cover art, which he can personally vouch for.
More precisely, Romero revealed that he was the model for the helmeted, devil-blasting “Doomguy” on its iconic box cover.

OBITUARY—Legendary filmmaker George A Romero, creator of the genre-defining horror Night of the Living Dead, has died at the age of 77.
Romero passed away in his sleep on Sunday after a “brief but aggressive battle” with lung cancer, according to producing partner Peter Grunwald.
Filmed on a meagre budget of $ 120,000, Romero’s Night of the Living Dead is widely hailed as a masterpiece of the horror genre. Its tale of a zombie uprising caused by a contaminant from space gave birth to the undead, flesh-eating “ghoul,” which would later be called a “zombie.” The film not only spawned a series from Romero—which includes Dawn of the Dead (1978), Day of the Dead (1985), and Land of the Dead (2005)—but also a swathe of imitators across films and video games.

]]>Romero all but single-handedly created modern zombie horror via his iconic 1968 film Night of the Living Dead. An error in the film’s copyright filing put it into the public domain, doing wonders for its visibility but not for Romero’s pocketbook. However, he turned that influential film into a series of “Dead” stories, including Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, and Land of the Dead; in between those films, he directed the cult faves The Crazies, Martin, Knightriders, and Monkey Shines, as well as the Stephen King collaborations Creepshow and The Dark Half. King tweeted Sunday night:
Filmmaker Jordan Peele, who frequently acknowledged the echoes of Night of the Living Dead’s mixture of social commentary and horror in his recent hit Get Out, also paid tribute on Twitter:
Romero died Sunday, according to a statement provided to the Los Angeles Times, following a “brief but aggressive battle with lung cancer.” He was 77.

Martin Landau was one of the last remaining veterans of Hollywood’s Golden Age, a consummate professional who cut his teeth on the stage and live television before bowing on the silver screen in 1959, with the one-two punch of Lewis Milestone’s Pork Chop Hill and Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest. He worked steadily, mostly in supporting roles, in all three mediums through the next three decades, becoming best known for his work on the original television version of Mission: Impossible.
But Landau (rather unexpectedly) flourished in his later years, beginning with an Oscar-nominated supporting performance in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1988 film Tucker: The Man and His Dream. He scored another nomination the following year, for his brilliant and complex turn as a morally challenged adulterer in Woody Allen’s masterpiece Crimes and Misdemeanors; he finally won the award five years later, for his wonderful turn as Bela Lugosi in Tim Burton’s Ed Wood.
Landau died Saturday at 89, according to Variety. He recently appeared on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast for a wide-ranging talk about his career on stage and screen; listen to that episode here.

George A. Romero, the director of Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead, has passed away at the age of 77. The creator of the modern zombie movie, the often imitated but never matched filmmaker still looms large as one of the most important horror filmmakers of all time.
According to a statement released by his longtime producing partner, Peter Grunwald, Romero died in his sleep following a “brief but aggressive battle with lung cancer.” He was listening to the score for his favorite movie, John Ford’s The Quiet Man, and was with his wife, Suzanne Desrocher Romero, and his daughter, Tina Romero, at the time of his passing.
Born on February 4, 1940 in New York City, Romero’s first film as a director sent shockwaves through the genre movie world that are still being felt to this day. Shot in black and what and on a small budget, 1968’s Night of the Living Dead helped set the template for the modern independent horror movie – a young and hungry filmmaker pulls himself up his bootstraps and makes a scary, smart, and relevant experience. The film created an entire new subgenre of horror, inspiring blatant imitations and respectful odes to this day. The success of The Walking Dead on AMC began with Romero’s contributions to the mere concept of the cinematic zombie.
Romero remained outspoken about the horror staple he helped create, later saying of The Walking Dead: “Basically it’s just a soap opera with a zombie occasionally. I always used the zombie as a character for satire or a political criticism, and I find that missing in what’s happening now.”
Night of the Living Dead used a zombie apocalypse as a background for simmering chamber piece about racial tension and features one of the horror genre’s first great, black heroes, played by the fierce Duane Jones. His politically tinged zombie tales continued with 1978’s Dawn of the Dead, which took on America’s commercialism with the force of a crowbar to an undead skull, and 1985’s Day of the Dead, which drips with despair and paranoia as it explores the apocalypse from a military bunker.
Romero found it difficult to separate himself from the genre he popularized and his later zombie movies find him attempting to find something new to say while treading turf that even he admitted was familiar. 2005’s Land of the Dead, 2007’s Diary of the Dead, and 2009’s Survival of the Dead are more interesting than most zombie movies, sometimes feeling more like bold (and sometimes not successful) experiments.
Even when he wasn’t tackling the undead, Romero continued to build his career on horror. 1973’s The Crazies is a another politically charged horror tale and 1982’s Creepshow (the first and not the last time he would work in the world of author Stephen King) remain well-regarded One of his few non-horror films has earned a devoted cult following – 1981’s Knightriders, about a medieval reenactment troupe, has received acclaim in the decades since it came and went in theaters.
Even if George Romero just made the first modern zombie movies and created a formula that would be repeatedly borrowed and reinvented for 50 years, he’d be remembered as a horror icon. But George Romero did all of that while making thoughtful, funny, scary, and relevant movies that wielded shock factor like a fine blade. His work was pointed and political, even as it was inspiring generations of moviemakers, make-up artists, and monster fans. His thumbprint lurks on film and television, clear as day to anyone with access to a movie theater or a television. He will be missed.

NEW YORK (AP) — George Romero, whose classic “Night of the Living Dead” and other horror films turned zombie movies into social commentaries and who saw his flesh-devouring undead spawn countless imitators, remakes and homages, has died. He was 77.
Romero died Sunday following a battle with lung cancer, said his family in a statement provided by his manager Chris Roe. Romero’s family said he died while listening to the score of “The Quiet Man,” one of his favorite films, with his wife, Suzanne Desrocher, and daughter, Tina Romero, by this side.
