Peter O’Toole’s acting career spanned seven decades and involved hundreds of roles, a million sardonic smirks, and no small amount of liquor. On screen, O’Toole could be heroic, villainous, affable, and off-putting, sometimes all at once. In interviews, O’Toole was frank and unguarded, quick with a jibe, and unwilling to suffer fools. O’Toole and his frequent collaborator, the actor Richard Harris, have both appeared on many talk shows toward the ends of their lives to tell many, many stories of getting drunk together.
Somewhere along the way, O’Toole garnered enough fame and clout to more or less select any project he wanted. By the time he starred in Peter Medak’s “The Ruling Class” in 1972, O’Toole had already appeared in 18 feature films, including a James Bond movie. That same year, O’Toole would appear in “Under Milk Wood” and a film adaptation of “Man of La Mancha.” One might say he was on top of the world, but that would imply there was a time when O’Toole wasn’t on top of the world. Somehow, he seemed to be in charge of the screen, even when slumming in shlock like Joe Chappelle’s “Phantoms.”
In a 1972 interview with Interview Magazine, however, O’Toole revealed that he was always eyeballing a certain filmmaker that he never did get to work with. In conversation with Joan Buck, O’Toole revealed that he always wanted to play Shakespeare’s “King Lear.” As dream roles go, this is a logical choice. Lear is a meaty part that permits an actor to display a madness-driven political fall, as well as several great, famous lines of dialogue (“How sharper than a serpent’s tooth,” etc).
Lear was O’Toole’s choice. But only if he could work with Akira Kurosawa.

In 1972, Kurosawa was suffering through a career slump, as well as a bout of extreme depression (as detailed in his book “Something Like an Autobiography”). His 1970 film “Dodes’ka-ded,” was a bold experiment for Kurosawa, as it was the filmmaker’s first in color. Kurosawa had been encouraged to make it by no one less than Sergei Eisenstein, and he had to mortgage his house in order to pay for it. Sadly, “Dodes’ka-den” was a critical and commercial failure, and Kurosawa was thrust into a creative rut. It wouldn’t be until 1975 that Kurosawa would return with “Dersu Uzala.”
During this span, O’Toole told Interview’s Joan Buck about how he is typically drawn to author-centric scripts, preferring classical texts to potboilers; O’Toole says he’s no trained dog, preferring to be the mouthpiece for a genius writer. O’Toole and Buck, when mentioning Kurosawa, seem to have caught wind of some errant rumor as to Kurosawa’s health; Buck seems to think that Kurosawa had been diagnosed with syphilis. O’Toole shrugs the rumor off, but does mention that Shakespeare himself might have written “Lear” while ill. He says:
“My favorite filmmaker is Kurosawa. To me he’s the perfect blend of the image and the word. Superb. I’d love to do ‘King Lear’ with him … Syphilis did you say? Good Lord how very interesting. What a marvelous death. Perfect for Lear. The great theory is that Shakespeare wrote it when he was poxed to the nines. What’s the line? ‘A convocation of politic worms are active.’ They seem to have found evidence there. The great misanthropic plays, ‘Lear,’ ‘Timon of Athens,’ all have images of pox, dark, devils down below.”
For the record, Kurosawa never had syphilis.

It’s possible Buck was conflating Kurosawa’s imagined illness with the content of his 1949 film “The Quiet Duel,” which is about a doctor with syphilis who forces himself into loneliness rather than tell the news to his long-term fiancée. Whatever the reason, when O’Toole made the connection between STIs and Shakespeare, he went on a bit of a tear, enthusiastically quoting and thinking up acting angles. In his inimitable fashion, O’Toole makes a gloriously tasteless joke before admitting that he would need to learn Japanese in order to work with the master. He said:
“F***in’ marvelous, isn’t it? Making a film whose image is all down below, there’s devils, there’s darkness, ‘Copulation thrives and the fly goes to it,’ made by a syphilitic? I suppose I’d have to make my contribution and get the clap or something, or a token crab … I mentioned it to him a long time ago and he nodded. But finally Kurosawa’s such a rooted man either I would have to learn Japanese or he would have to learn English.”
O’Toole and Kurosawa never made a film together, although Kurosawa would indeed eventually make his own version of “King Lear.” In 1985, Kurosawa, writing with Hideo Oguni and Masato Ide, made “Ran” (translation: “Chaos”) a sumptuous and depressive version of “Lear” set in 16th century Japan. The Lear character, Ichimonji Hidetora, was played by the brilliant Tatsuya Nakadai, who appeared in multiple Kurosawa films, as well as “The Sword of Doom” and “The Face of Another.” O’Toole never got to play Lear professionally, although in 1980, he did play Macbeth at the Old Vic.
For our part, a “King Lear” starring O’Toole and directed by Kurosawa is something we all missed out on.

Sure, there’s an underdog hero — this one is named Mark aka Invincible (voiced by The Walking Dead‘s Steven Yeun) — but he’s unique. Half Korean American and half superhero, Mark is a teenager who inherits his powers from his dad Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons), the most dominant caped crusader or Viltrumite in their world. But the more strength and ability Mark gains, the more he begins to see that his father is more flawed than he could have ever imagined.
Zazie Beetz, who is best known for her roles in FX’s Atlanta and the Joker film, voices Amber, Mark’s high school classmate. Mark quietly crushes on Amber until grabbing her attention by attempting to defend her against a handsy bully. Amber eventually develops feelings for Mark, and unintentionally lands herself in a love triangle with him and Eve aka Atom Eve (Weird City‘s Gillian Jacobs).
Beetz says she was drawn to Invincible, which The Walking Dead’s Robert Kirkman adapted from his comic book series of the same name, and made its Amazon premiere this past Friday, because of the show’s impressive and inclusive cast.
“I had an opportunity to read the pilot and then to also look into the comic and the group of people that were already attached,” Beetz tells TVLine. “Steven Yeun and J.K., Sandra Oh (who plays Mark’s mom Debbie) and Gilly…. It was just a really great team that I wanted to work with and be a part of. Also, I loved that Robert Kirkman was involved with the series and I really trusted that the spirit of the comic was going to be in the television show, which I think is really important. I like being part of that world.”
Read on as the German-born Beetz teases the eight-episode Season 1 and talks about the show’s indirect connection to Atlanta costar and creator Donald Glover.
TVLINE | Did working with Kirkman attract you to Invincible?
He was super involved. He was in all of the recording sessions and was very involved in shaping the show. I was really drawn to that, and Amber’s character is a part of that larger world.
TVLINE | Amber has got some fighting skills. She’s not Domino and she doesn’t have superpowers, but she doesn’t suffer bullies.
Yeah, she holds her own and I think that is something that sort of shifted from her comic book persona, as well. She leads with confidence and leads with a sense of knowing who she is and who she wants to be and what she wants to do in the world. I think that’s actually a really interesting juxtaposition in a way to Mark, who is trying to figure it all out still. I liked the idea that a lot of people who watch a superhero thing are like, “Oh man, I wish I was like Superman or Wonder Woman” or whoever. But really, you don’t have to be that to be exceptional, or to be inciting change in the world and doing what you think is good. So, her role in that way is really important.
TVLINE | What was it like working on this during a pandemic? Were you all doing this from home, virtually?
We did this before the pandemic, during, like, the spring of 2019, so it was a normal recording where you went into the studio — but we didn’t record at the same time. I think Steven got to work with J.K. Simmons, but I did it alone, and I think Gillian was alone for all of hers. Obviously, Kirkman was involved when we were recording, and our director, and some of the producers. But I didn’t work with the other actors directly.
TVLINE | Oh, I imagined you and Gillian swapping Donald Glover stories because you have both worked with him. Is it like “Six Degrees of Donald Glover?”
Yeah, I was thinking about that. I was like, “Oh yeah, like she knows him because of her time on Community.” We were just doing a bunch of our interviews together, which is really how we are getting to know each other.
TVLINE | Have you started working on Atlanta Season 3 yet?
We’re actually just about to start shooting. So, we’re doing it. I’m leaving in like two weeks to go shoot in Europe, so we have to start the whole process of that with the PPE and everything. And you can never really get used it. I have worked during the pandemic, and I have to say I’m really grateful to be working, frankly. In this business, it’s interesting because it’s all about connecting with and communicating with people, and that whole element is harder to do. Sets are very strict about keeping everybody safe, which is good, but it doesn’t make the ability to really communicate effectively easy. You have to kind of get used to doing everything a bit differently, yet you never really get used to it, because it’s a little anxiety inducing.
TVLINE | What can we expect from Amber in Season 1 of Invincible?
Mark and Amber kind of have a romantic thing. But as Mark is coming into his own and sort of working on their relationship, he struggles with the pressure of trying to balance these responsibilities of being a super person, and just trying to live a normal life. So, yeah, I don’t know what I can really tell you beyond that. But get ready for more tension between him and Amber and Eve.

Another weighed in: “Is it just me that feels particularly annoyed that @alexberesfordTV is now sitting in @piersmorgans seat? Method in the madness?? Not amused!”
“God that didn’t take long to fit Mr motivator into Piers chair, talk about rubbing salt in the wound. Come back Piers, I’m bored,” a fourth added.
While a fifth similarly called for Piers’ return: “Bring back Piers. Don’t wanna see this bloke!”
However, a sixth sought middle ground as they added to the debate: “I support Alex over the whole Piers thing with MM debate but a couple of things…
]]>Sunday’s American Gods finale will find Shadow Moon holding an extremely physically taxing vigil for his dead father Mr. Wednesday, who also happens to be the Norse deity Odin. There’s no assurance that Shadow, whose mother was a Black woman with no celestial powers to speak of, will even make it through the nine-day ordeal. And then there’s the orisha, aka the Yoruba spirits who have literally danced through Shadow’s dreams and visions this season. What part might they play in our protagonist’s fate?
To truly understand, says Nick Gillie, one of the series’ writers, you have to step back and take a god’s eye view of the season as a whole.
Gillie joined the series after showrunner Charles “Chic” Eglee attended Goddess Black, Gillie’s one-man stage show. He wound up helping to weave the orisha storyline throughout Season 3. “My stage piece is about the mythology of western culture as it relates to the collective soul force,” Gillies says. And when he came to the writers’ room, he found a bunch of people who were experts on Neil Gaiman’s book and the mythology it contains. “What I brought is a mythology of what the American godhead is. The Declaration of Independence talks about an equality of humanity,” he says. “It doesn’t mention this specifically, obviously. But regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, whatever it is: We have a collective equality, and that’s the ‘we.’”
As an example, Gillies points out that the concept of a unifying “we” allowed slaves to survive under crushing work demands in the American south. “So that was what I brought to the show in terms of the ‘we’ soul force, and that became an ideal that all of the characters are now working towards,” he says. “That became a balance against this individualistic ideal that Odin represents.”
In American Gods, the “we” concept manifests as the orisha known as Chango (played by Wale), Aye (Karen Glave), Oshun (Herizen F. Guardiola) and Yemoja (Bridge Ogundipe). Traditionally sent to guide humanity, the four spiritual chaperones are “trying to bring Shadow into the same fold, the same idea of ‘we are all connected,’” Gillie adds. “And there is a spiritual unity of great power that we have access to.”
As we’ve seen, the orisha have their work cut out for them. Season 3 has witnessed Shadow both trying to distance himself from a manipulative Mr. Wednesday and growing more comfortable with his own status (and, perhaps, power?) as a demigod. During a writers’ room visit before the season began, series star Ricky Whittle recalls, Gillie “sat me down and explained exactly the power and the culture and where we were going to go with this season. The story thread, the history and the information and knowledge that he had has been so helpful and so powerful.”
Whittle adds: “I knew when I was making it, it was so powerful and deep. And it really was a pleasure to put out such a strong message.” He laughs. “You know, American Gods certainly is a show that never shies away from sensitive topics. Never more so than now.”
Along those lines: Between Season 2 and 3, the series made entertainment news after former cast member Orlando Jones announced he had been fired, claiming that Eglee thought the character of Mr. Nancy sent “the wrong message” to “Black America.” The series released a statement saying that Jones’ contract had not been renewed “because Mr. Nancy, among other characters, is not featured in the portion of the book we are focusing on within Season 3” and asserted that American Gods is “one of the most diverse series on television.” In addition, a rep for Eglee called Jones’ comments “inaccurate on so many levels, from the macro to the micro.”
Gillie maintains that the show’s focus on Shadow and Bilquis, via the orisha, this season is not a response to Jones’ criticism. “No, it wasn’t related,” he says. “I know the show seems now, after 2020 has happened and George Floyd was choked to death in broad daylight by the police, it seems that the show was made for 2021. But for me, I was writing this [type of thing] in 2008.”
Now, back to the finale. In addition to Shadow’s grueling post-mortem task, we’ll see a newly reenergized Bilquis take definite steps toward a new goal — a path series star Yetide Badaki says her character wouldn’t be on without the help of the orisha.
“As we learn more about ourselves, we learn more about our history, the more we learn about our culture. All of these things help us to step into our power,” she tells TVLine. And while Bilquis is hailed as the show’s resident love goddess, “There are many sides to her. The more she recognizes each side, the more whole she becomes. The more whole she becomes, the more empowered she becomes. And then the more empowered she becomes, the more she is able to help and affect the events around her.”
Gillies is quick to point out that, unlike other otherworldly characters like Mr. Wednesday or the New God Mr. World, the orisha “are not so interested in forcing a human to do or learn a thing. They’re just guiding you in the path of learning. So therefore, part of their philosophy is: You’re never a total victim. There’s always a part that you play, if not in the cause of your trauma, then in continuing it and embracing it.”
So when Shadow climbs up onto that tree in Sunday’s episode to endure whatever the gods can throw at him, he’s actively trying to repair past hurts and become someone he isn’t. Or, as Gillie says, “It’s not just Odin that’s seducing Shadow… Shadow is seducing Shadow, and the orisha are trying to show him that… [They’re] reminding him: What do you really want to be here?”

Showrunner Michael Hirst has opened up on his proudest achievements as the sole writer for his hit History series, Vikings. Now that the popular medieval drama wrapped up on Amazon Prime last year, the creator has paid tribute to fan favourite shield-maiden, Lagertha (played by Katheryn Winnick).
Vikings’ writer and creator Michael Hirst has shared his immense pride for Canadian star Katheryn Winnick’s long-running role as the female warrior, Lagertha.
Winnick starred as the tenacious shield-maiden since the first season arrived on the History Channel in 2013.
Initially intended as a standalone miniseries, Vikings took viewers by storm and was eventually renewed for an additional five seasons.
This was undoubtedly due, in no small part, to Winnick’s compelling performance across all six seasons as the legendary viking hero.

Over the years, Vikings helped smash through gender stereotypes by placing powerful female fighters in the centre of the show’s bloodiest action sequences.
Despite the network expecting the majority of the show’s audience to be male, History soon found this wasn’t the case.
The same is also expected of the upcoming sequel series, Vikings: Valhalla, with relative newcomers Laura Berlin and Frida Gustavsson in pivotal roles.
The showrunner went on: “In other words, particularly Lagertha was making women watch the show. And it was about so much more than fights and battles and things.”
It appears that Disney+‘s Secret Invasion has found one of its leaders, in Kingsley Ben-Adir.
Announced in December during the Walt Disney Company’s Investor Day 2020, the live-action Marvel series stars MCU vet Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury while Captain Marvel‘s Ben Mendelsohn will reprise his role as the shapeshifting Skrull named Talos. The project, based on the 2008 Marvel Comics crossover of the same name, follows a sect of Skrulls who have infiltrated all aspects of life on Earth.
Though unconfirmed by Marvel Studios or Disney+, our sister site Deadline is reporting that Ben-Adir — whose TV credits include The OA, Peaky Blinders, High Fidelity and The Comey Rule (playing President Barack Obama) — has been cast as a lead villain.
Ben-Adir of course also played Malcolm X in the acclaimed feature film One Night in Miami…, which just netted Academy Award nominations for Supporting Actor Leslie Odom Jr., Adapted Screenplay and Original Song (“Speak Now”).

He has spoken to Sky News and taken to Twitter, however, to respond to his departure from the breakfast TV programme.
To his 7.8million Twitter followers he wrote: “On Monday, I said I didn’t believe Meghan Markle in her Oprah interview.
“I’ve had time to reflect on this opinion, and I still don’t. If you did, OK. Freedom of speech is a hill I’m happy to die on.
“Thanks for all the love, and hate. I’m off to spend more time with my opinions.”
This Morning continues weekdays at 10am on ITV.
