NFL teams are gearing up for the start of the new season with it all beginning next month. Rodgers is having to work with a new core of receivers after Jordy Nelson was cut from the Packers. But, after a recent training session, Rodgers wasn’t best pleased with how new receivers J’Mon Moor, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Equanimeous St Brown were settling in. “It was one of the worst cards sessions we’ve had,” Rodgers said. “I don’t know how you can make it any simpler. “You literally have what the play would be in our terminology on the card, and the effort level was very low, especially with what I’m accustomed to. “I’ve been running that period for a number of years. So it’s not a good start for us on the card period for the young guys. “I think (DeAngelo) Yancey has really progressed, G-Mo (Geronimo Allison). Obviously, 16 (Jake Kumerow). But everybody else was kind of p*** poor.” WHO DO GREEN BAY PACKERS FACE IN 2018? FULL SCHEDULE HERE But Rodgers has explained the comments, saying it’s all to do with his will to succeed. “I care about winning, No 1, and I’m going to say and do the things that I feel like can advance us,” Rodgers said. “It’s going to be tough at some points. It’s not a popularity contest all the time. “I don’t feel like when you make a statement like that that there needs to be some big response or feelings hurt or offense that somebody takes with it. “If they do, they’re taking it the wrong way because this is a professional environment. “I’m doing things that I feel like are in the best interest of the team from a leadership standpoint, and if no one else is going to stand up and criticize a bad practice, then maybe I need to be the one to do it. So, I did it.” Rodgers also saw quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt depart Green Bay during the offseason as the Packers look to bounce back from a poor season last time out. Rodgers spent a chunk of the season on the sidelines after injuring his shoulder. The NFC North side averaged 27.4 points per game as Rodgers led them to a 4-1 start last year, then 17.3 in a 3-7 stretch after he broke his collarbone. And Rodgers has admitted his threshold for mistakes isn’t as flexible as it used to be. “I’m getting older and grumpier,” Rodgers said. “I’ve been at this for a long time. “I’m tired, too; we’re all a little tired. When you get a little tired, the fuse gets a little shorter. “Again, you’re in like the 14th play of a 14-play drive and you’ve got low effort level and an MA (missed assignment), that’s a little frustrating.” Liverpool signed Henderson from Sunderland in 2011 with the England international since donning the Reds armband. However, it was not always straightforward for the 27-year-old, who nearly left during Rodgers’ time in charge. Rodgers, now at Celtic, tried to include Henderson in a swap deal that would have seen then-Fulham star Clint Dempsey move to Anfield. Liverpool ultimately opted against that with Henderson now set to lead the Reds in next week’s Champions League final with Real Madrid. And Henderson has now opened up on the hurt of learning that Rodgers wanted him gone. He told the Daily Mail: “Brendan [Rodgers] called me in and said ‘listen, this is the offer’ and he asked me what I thought. “It implied to me that he would let me leave and it was up to me. “I went back to my room. I shed a few tears. I ended up crying a little bit because it hurt so much. I had the game that night to think about it as well. “I spoke to my agent and told him what had happened and I said I didn’t want to go. I wanted to stay and fight and try and improve and try to prove the manager wrong. “My agent agreed. I spoke to my dad. He was gutted but he backed my decision to stay and fight. “From that point, I just kept my head down. I knew I wouldn’t get as much game time as I wanted but I still had faith. “I was young enough to get my head down, keep working hard, do my extra bits and prove them wrong and I feel I managed to do that by the time Brendan left. “There are always those moments in football – and life in general – which can decide the path and the route you go down. “For me it was never an option to leave.” The Celtic boss is reportedly one of four managers being eyed by the Gunners board to replace Arsene Wenger. The Frenchman is under increasing pressure once again after back-to-back 3-0 defeats at the hands of Manchester City. Wenger is under contract until 2019 but may now leave the club early as fans demand his resignation. And Rodgers is aware he is one of the coaches being linked with the Arsenal hot seat. “Arsenal is a great club with a great manager,” he told reporters. “People will look at it and see that I went to Liverpool, they were struggling for five seasons for Champions League football and I was able to get them back. “When I came to Celtic, they hadn’t been in the Champions League for three seasons and I got them back. “So maybe people are thinking – okay, Arsenal have been out of the Champions League and that is maybe the equation for someone like myself.” But the former Liverpool boss was quick to dismiss claims he would soon be in the dugout at the Emirates. “However, I’m loving my life up here. I’m not going to be here forever but I’m living in a dream, although dreams always come to an end at some point, that’s for sure,” he added. “I’m always relaxed about speculation and whatnot but my focus is only on Celtic. “It’s a fantastic club Arsenal, but they have a great manager. “Unfortunately, the criticism Arsene takes is now the way in the modern game, modern football. That’s unfortunate because he has done so much for the British game.” Celtic sit six points clear at the top of the SPL. Walking gingerly to the sideline with his throwing shoulder throbbing in pain, Aaron Rodgers turned back toward the field and barked at Minnesota Vikings linebacker Anthony Barr. Rodgers likely already knew that his season was in jeopardy after Barr’s hit broke his collarbone, and the fiery quarterback’s frustration boiled over. Now the Green Bay Packers have to try to make sure their season as a whole doesn’t go down the drain with it. Rodgers was knocked out of the 23-10 loss to the Vikings in the first quarter on Sunday with an injury that could cause him to miss the remainder of the season . It’s a crushing blow to a team that entered the season with Super Bowl aspirations, optimism based primarily on the right arm of one of the game’s best quarterbacks. “It’s devastating,” receiver Randall Cobb said. “No question about it. First and foremost, that is one of my closest friends, so to see him go down with that is tough. We still have to play football. We have a long season ahead of us to figure out what we are going to do.” Brett Hundley, the only other quarterback on the roster outside of practice squad player Joe Callahan, was rushed into duty. He finished 18 of 33 for 157 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. “Losing Aaron Rodgers speaks for itself,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. “In my opinion, he’s the best player in football. This is the ultimate team game. We need to be better with the 11 people on the field that we have, regardless of the phase that we’re in. Ultimately that’s my responsibility.” Colin Kaepernick, who has had difficulty finding a job since becoming the face of league-wide demonstrations during the national anthem that protest social injustice, and Tony Romo, who joined CBS as an analyst after retiring from the Dallas Cowboys, could be outside options to fill in for Rodgers. But McCarthy said after the game he was not considering anything like that yet. “Brett Hundley and Joe Callahan, that’s what we’re going with,” he said. Despite several key injuries to the secondary, the Packers entered the game Sunday against their NFC North rivals at 4-1 after Rodgers engineered a game-winning touchdown drive to beat the Dallas Cowboys last week. Vikings coach Mike Zimmer’s defense has always gotten after Rodgers in these tense matchups, and it happened again in the first quarter when Barr drove him into the turf after he got rid of a roll-out pass. The impact did not appear to be that violent at first glance as Rodgers rolled through the hit. But it became apparent quickly that he was in considerable pain. He writhed on the turf as McCarthy argued for a roughing the passer penalty. “I know Anthony Barr personally,” said Hundley, a fellow UCLA alum. “I wouldn’t imagine he’s a dirty player. I didn’t really get a good look at it.” Rodgers rode a cart to the locker room for further tests and remained there throughout the first half. He was initially deemed questionable, but the Packers announced after halftime that he would not return to the game. “He’s the best in the game so I hate to see that for him,” Vikings safety Harrison Smith said. Since becoming the full-time starter in 2008, Rodgers has been remarkably durable. He missed seven games in 2013 with a fractured collarbone, but he has started 132 of the other 134 games during that time period. Of course, being able to count on a quarterback to take the snaps is nothing new for Green Bay. Since Brett Favre took over for the injured Don Majkowski in the third game of the 1992 season, the Packers have had Favre and Rodgers for all but nine games. Matt Flynn, Scott Tolzien and Seneca Wallace were forced to fill in while Rodgers was out in 2013 and the Packers went 2-4-1 in that stretch. Flynn started once in 2010 when Rodgers sat out with a concussion and again in 2011 when he rested during the regular-season finale with the Packers having clinched the top seed in the NFC playoffs. Favre never sat at all. Hundley had only thrown 11 passes over the course of his first two-plus seasons in the league before jumping in on Sunday. Damn I hope @AaronRodgers12 is ok! The league is better when he’s healthy. Praying for you. “I hope @AaronRodgers12 is OK!” Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman tweeted. “The league is better when he’s healthy. Praying for you.”

At 33 years old and entering his 13th season in the NFL, Aaron Rodgers has already started making changes to prolong his career.
According to ESPN’s Jason Wilde, Rodgers used to see himself as a player who might retire at 36 or 37. He didn’t think of himself as an NFL “lifer.”
While Rodgers never lost a desire to play the game, according to Wilde, his passion for football has recently been reinvigorated, and he now has “designs” to play into his 40s.
To do so, Rodgers is following the lead of one of his contemporaries — Tom Brady. Brady, of course, has structured his entire life to play football into his 40s, from his notoriously stingy diet, sleeping habits, and stretching-specific workouts. Rodgers has reportedly started following Brady’s model.
In 2016, Rodgers cut dairy from his diet. He told ESPN’s Rob Demovsky in 2016 that he eats a vegan-like diet but adds in doses of chicken and some red meats. He also said he follows an “80/20” model — 80% of his meals are healthy while he enjoys the other 20%.
Though his diet may not be as strict as Brady’s, he recently told People that he speaks to Brady often and follows his model for “clean eating.”
“I can’t give up some of the nightshades, but I think Tom sets a good example, and we have been friends for a while and talk about a number of things. He has kind of set the standard for taking care of your body.”
As a result, Rodgers came into training camp below 220 lb for the second year in a row. He told Demovsky in April that he put a bigger emphasis on offseason workouts and stopped playing as much golf in the offseason.
Once again, Rodgers said it comes back to diet, recovery, and sleep.
“There’s always little tweaks, but the key for me is really that diet and trying to continue to be smart about what I’m eating and how it affects my performance even in the offseason,” Rogers said. “And then recovery is huge … sleep’s very important to my routine as well.”
There are other changes, too. Rodgers has always had a maniacal intensity and robotic memory, but he has apparently become more detail-ortiented. His favorite part of game preparation, according to Wilde, has become studying opponents’ schemes on film and altering the routes with his receivers. Packers coach Mike McCarthy also said that Rodgers has “taken it to another level” this year when it comes to coaching and instructing younger players.
Rodgers is even beginning to sound like Brady. He told Wilde:
“I think as you get older, and you see a lot of your friends move on, retire, get cut, get injured and stop playing, you have that point where you think about your own career and how long you can go. And for me, I got even more motivated to be an irreplaceable part of our team.
“In doing that, I also, I think, started to really have a greater awareness of my surroundings and enjoy the little things more — the preparation, the meetings, the practice. And when you’re loving those things, the game is really icing on the cake for you.”
Here’s what Brady told Peter King of The MMQB in February:
“Other than playing football, the other thing I love to do is prepare to play football. I’ve worked hard to get a system in place that really works for me and I know could work for everybody else if they just did it. That enables me to play 99 plays [in Super Bowl 51, the most of his career in one game] as a 39-year-old in the last game of the season … Football to me is more than just a sport. It has become my life. Every choice that I make … what I have for breakfast, how I work out, all of those things. I love the game. I love playing.”
From the sounds of it, Rodgers hasn’t gotten quite as stringent as Brady, but that may be down the line. Rodgers hasn’t shown signs of slowing down, but as he gets older, if he continues to have a desire to play longer, he may turn to Brady levels of dedication.
In the meantime, there’s a scary scenario to imagine for the rest of the NFL — two of the NFL’s best quarterbacks getting more focused, and perhaps better, as they age.

On Christmas Day last year, music lost another icon in the form of Wham! star Michael. Just after his death, music producer Rodgers revealed that they had been working on new music only two days prior.
Now the latter has released a reworking Michael’s Fantasy as a single, something that had always been intended, but never came to pass in the star’s lifetime.
The song has already made waves on social media, with one fan writing: “I am sobbing. I can’t even. @nilerodgers @GeorgeMichael #fantasy #heartbroken.”
“@nilerodgers It’s brilliant and thank you for keeping George Michael’s music alive and fresh! #fantasy,” said another.
A third beamed: “OMG! @GeorgeMichael #Fantasy was simply #awesome @nilerodgers excellent work! @BBCRadio2 #replayalldaylong #GeorgeMichael”
The track was originally supposed to feature on the singer’s second album, Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1; and was a B-side in the early 90s.
Before his death Michael had been working on the new version and now fans can enjoy the fruit of the late star’s labours.
The funky track premiered on Radio 2 this morning and will be included on the re-release of Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1/MTV Unplugged, which is out on on October 20.
Sony Music have also put together a new film called Freedom, which will air on Channel 4 around the album’s release.
Narrated by Michael, the documentary will featuring stars such as Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Liam Gallagher and Rodgers.
Michael had been working on the film right up until Christmas 2016 when he passed away.
Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1/MTV Unplugged will be released on October 20, 2017.
Roberts has signed for Celtic on loan for the second year on the trot.
The 20-year-old made a big impact in Scotland last season, scoring 11 goals from 47 games as Rodgers’ side won the Scottish Premiership for the sixth season in a row.
He returned to parent club Manchester City in the summer but Pep Guardiola has again allowed the star to go out on loan.
And Rodgers has revealed it would have taken a huge bid to convince the Citizens to cough up their wing wizard, saying they would even have turned down £30million.
“We would have broken our transfer record for Patrick,” he said.
“We wanted to find the deal that would get him back here.
“But he’s a Manchester City player. We could have offered them £30m and they would have said no.
“They didn’t want to sell. So the best option was to get him back on loan.”
Speaking last week, Celtic legend Chris Sutton praised the deal.
“Patrick Roberts is a fantastic signing. Managing to get him back adds real creativity to the side,” wrote Sutton in his column for The Daily Record.
“I said a couple of weeks ago it was like signing a £10 million player, but given the fees paid out for some dross this week, it’s probably worth an even bigger valuation.
“I’m not sure the whole PR7 marketing campaign isn’t a bit over the top, but that’s the modern game.
“Bottom line is he’s an outstanding addition to the squad and Rodgers was able to supplement that deal with a move for a third striker.”
The Hoops survived a massive wobble against play-off rivals Astana in Kazakhstan to book their place in the group stage.
Leading 5-0 from the first leg, Celtic got the fright of their lives when Astana went 4-1 up with 21 minutes still to play last night.
But the panic was quelled when late goals from Olivier Ntcham and Leigh Griffiths secured an 8-4 aggregate win.
The Parkhead club go into tomorrow’s Champions League draw in Monaco knowing they will rake in at least £30million.
And relieved manager Rodgers is backing his Bhoys to challenge for a spot in the post-Christmas knockout phase.
He said: “When momentum changes like that it can be very tough to turn it back around.
“Astana attacked and put risk into the game and all of a sudden we found ourselves on the ropes a little bit.
“I have to give credit to the players. At 4-1 you can be blurred in that moment.
“The players were shocked by the goals we conceded – and they were disappointing goals.
“Once we got the second goal the calmness came back into the team.
“That then led to the third goal when we played our way through the pressure. We defended much better then.
“We had to withstand that period when teams can crumble away, but in the end we had 19 attempts at goal and dominated possession.
“But I still want us and expect us to be better.
“I’ve had midfield players playing centre-half, midfielders playing as strikers, right-backs playing centre-half.
“So the players have done absolutely magnificent and it’s another good learning game for us because we would want to be better than that defensively.
“But it’s a night to celebrate.
“It’s a wonderful achievement to gain qualification and get ourselves into the draw for the group stage.”
Celtic appeared to be coasting when Scott Sinclair struck to make it 1-1 on the night after a Kristoffer Ajer own-goal had given Astana hope.
Then came a shambolic start to the second half as the loss of three cheap goals led to nerves being shredded until the visitors scored twice late on.
Rodgers hopes his team can compete in the group stage for a place in the last 16, or at the very least parachute into the Europa League after Christmas.
He added: “The first target was to qualify. It’s a big achievement with the route we have to take and the games we have to play.
“We would like to progress this year and be in European football after Christmas.
“We are coming into the highest level and we are going to play against some fantastic players.
“Players are only going to improve and get better with experience.
“If we can be in European football after Christmas that will be another great step forward for us.
“We look forward to the draw now. It’s brilliant for the club and absolutely brilliant for the city of Glasgow.
“It’s not just about the football, it’s about the nation and what it does economically and commercially and what it brings into the city.
“Champions League football, business and everything. It’s fantastic.”
But the Hoops boss revealed his son was covering for injuries and is not a signing target.
The 24-year-old has been training with his dad’s side in a bid to top up his fitness before finding a new club in England.
And there’s no chance the former Brighton, Oldham and Swindon midfielder will be snapped up despite playing well in a win secured by a late James Forrest goal.
Boss Rodgers said: “Given we were short of numbers he was able to go in and play.
“Anton has come with us to train and get in good condition for when the English seasons starts.
“But we had a few injuries to Kouassi Eboue and Kristoffer Ajer as well as one or two others.
“I thought without really knowing the other players he did well.
“He always wants the ball and is very good on set-pieces. He has confidence to play. But it’s never been the notion to sign him, it’s just to give him a couple of weeks and then he can see where the next venture is.
“His son lives down in Reading so the ideal scenario is that he finds a club close to where he lives.”
The match was a typical pre-season friendly played out in front of 500 fans, but Rodgers felt it was a worthwhile exercise.
He added: “The most important thing for us was the fitness element of the game.
“After the boys being off for a number of weeks it was good to get back out there.”
Rodgers started with six full internationals in his side – Mikael Lustig, Scott Brown, Stuart Armstrong, Leigh Griffiths, Jonny Hayes and Erik Sviatchenko.
There were outings too for Doris de Vries, Jamie McCart, Calvin Miller, Callum McGregor and Gary Mackay- Steven.
McGregor and Griffiths came closest to breaking the first-half deadlock.
McGregor’s 18th-minute shot struck the bar and Griffiths rattled the post with a follow-up.
Rodgers changed the entire team bar McCart at half-time with son Anton wearing the No 13 shirt.
Scott Sinclair, James Forrest, Nir Bitton, Liam Henderson, Anthony Ralston, Jack Aitchison and Jozo Simunovic appeared.
Kieran Tierney took the skipper’s armband from Brown and Conor Hazard made his first top-team appearance in goal.
Dedryck Boyata replaced McCart with 35 minutes to play, and the win was secured six minutes from time when Tierney squared for Forrest to fire a low volley home from 16 yards.
Rodgers confirmed Ipswich kid Kundai Benyu is a signing for his development squad as he plots for the future.
“I think one day that will be the case [return to Premier League],” Rodgers said.
“I’m obviously still young, a few years ago I was super ambitious and I still I am.
“Sometimes you have to look at what you’ve got.
“As a Celtic supporter I know what they want and I need to give as much as I can and hopefully I can leave a legacy.
“I think one day I would go back, maybe even go abroad.
“But at the moment I am fully focused on Celtic.”
