The purchase is part of a plan to send two Saudi astronauts to the International Space Station.

 • Saudi Arabia plans to send its first female astronaut into space, Axiom confirmed to Insider.
 • The country bought two seats on a SpaceX ship as part of a plan to send Saudi astronauts to the ISS.
 • The astronauts will be the first from the nation to travel to space with a private company.

Saudi Arabia plans to send its first female astronaut to the International Space Station on board a SpaceX ship, Axiom, the company that made the deal, confirmed to Insider.

A representative for Axiom Space said the company was collaborating with the Saudi Space Commission to train two astronauts and prepare them to conduct research in space.

The purchase is part of a larger plan to send two Saudi astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS), three anonymous sources confirmed to Reuters.

The sources added that the deal with Houston-based Axiom Space, a private company, was signed earlier this year.

"Space belongs to all of humanity, which is one of the reasons Axiom Space is pleased to welcome our new partnership with the Saudi Space Commission to train and fly Saudi astronauts, including the first female Saudi astronaut," Michael Suffredini, Axiom Space's CEO, said at the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Paris.

The two seats are on board a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, which will travel to the ISS, where the Saudi astronauts are expected to stay for about a week, per Reuters.

The astronauts will be the first from the nation to travel to space with a private company. The mission will be the second space trip arranged by Axiom, according to Reuters' sources.

Axiom operates missions to and from the ISS and is also building the first commercial destination in space, Axiom Station, according to its website. The company launched the first private astronaut mission to the ISS in April. The four-man civilian crew also traveled on a SpaceX Crew Dragon spaceship, per NASA.

Private space companies such as Axiom are infringing on a uniquely diplomatic position between the US and other nations, which was traditionally controlled by NASA, Reuters reported.

Earlier this month, Axiom announced it had signed a deal with Turkey's government to send the first Turkish astronaut to space.

Russian cosmonauts were also set to fly to the ISS with SpaceX under a new NASA deal with Russia's space agency, Reuters reported.

SpaceX and the Saudi Space Commission did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment made outside normal working hours.

NASA successfully completes vital Artemis 1 rocket fuel test https://briefnews.eu/nasa-successfully-completes-vital-artemis-1-rocket-fuel-test/ https://briefnews.eu/nasa-successfully-completes-vital-artemis-1-rocket-fuel-test/#respond Thu, 22 Sep 2022 04:57:38 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/nasa-successfully-completes-vital-artemis-1-rocket-fuel-test/ The next Artemis 1 launch attempt might take place as soon as next week, seeing as NASA has met all the objectives it set out to do to consider its rocket's fuel test a success. NASA had to test adding super-cooled fuel to the Space Launch System's tanks to confirm the repairs it made after it scrubbed the mission's second launch attempt in late August. The ground team at Kennedy Space Center spotted a persistent hydrogen leak affecting one of the fuel lines on the SLS at the time and tried to fix it the day of three times. In the end, the team was unsuccessful and decided to postpone the mission.

The team determined a few days later that the leak was triggered when the SLS rocket's core booster tank went through a brief overpressurization. To prevent the same incident from happening, the team adjusted procedures for filling the rocket's tank with propellants, and it involves transitioning temperatures and pressures more slowly to prevent rapid changes that could cause leakage. The team's engineers also replaced the rocket's liquid hydrogen seals after discovering a small indentation in one of them that may have contributed to the leak.

While the engineers encountered another hydrogen leak during the fuel test, their troubleshooting efforts worked this time around and got the leak to "within allowable rates." That allowed them to conduct the pre-pressurization test, which brought up the liquid hydrogen tank's pressure level to match what it would experience just before an actual launch.

Artemis 1 launch director Charlie Blackwell-Thompson said the test went "really well" and that the team was able to accomplish all the objectives it set out to do. NASA will now evaluate data from the test before deciding if it can schedule another launch for the mission on its target date of September 27th.

Blue Origin shipped the first “flight” version of its BE-4 rocket engine to Texas for acceptance testing six weeks ago. These tests, scheduled to take less than a month, marked the final step before Blue Origin delivered the much-anticipated rocket engines to its customer, United Launch Alliance. A second flight engine followed the first out of the factory in mid-August.

These were hopeful signs for United Launch Alliance (ULA), which is using two of the large liquid oxygen-methane engines to power its new heavy lift Vulcan rocket. At the urging of the US Department of Defense, ULA has been pressing hard to make a 2022 launch date debut.

However, neither of these flight engines have yet been shipped from Texas to ULA’s rocket factory in northern Alabama. There, ULA is eagerly awaiting the engines for pre-launch processing and installation onto the rocket.

Uncrewed Blue Origin capsule lands safely after New Shepard rocket failure https://briefnews.eu/uncrewed-blue-origin-capsule-lands-safely-after-new-shepard-rocket-failure/ https://briefnews.eu/uncrewed-blue-origin-capsule-lands-safely-after-new-shepard-rocket-failure/#respond Tue, 13 Sep 2022 06:38:56 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/uncrewed-blue-origin-capsule-lands-safely-after-new-shepard-rocket-failure/ Blue Origin’s recent NS-23 flight didn’t go according to plan. On Monday morning, the private space firm was forced to abort the uncrewed mission after one of its New Shepard rockets suffered an unspecified “booster failure.” The problem came up about a minute after the flight took off from Blue Origin’s West Texas launch site at 10:26AM ET. You can see the entire incident unfold in the video the company shared on Twitter.

“It appears we have experienced an anomaly with today’s flight,” a commentator said during the NS-23 livestream. “This was unplanned and we don't have any details yet. But our crew capsule was able to escape successfully, we’ll follow its progress through landing. As you can see, the drogues have deployed, and the mains are going to be pulled out next.”

The capsule was carrying NASA-funded research equipment. “It’s useless to speculate about what happened at this point. Not even the company knows the cause,” tweeted Eric Berger, senior space editor at Ars Technica, adding in a separate post that had the spacecraft been manned, the crew “would have felt a serious jolt, but would have been safe.”

Blue Shepard won’t be able to fly again until Blue Origin investigates the incident and the Federal Aviation Administration signs off on the company’s findings.

Blue Origin, founded by billion Jeff Bezos, saw its first major incident on Monday.

 • A Blue Origin rocket with no crew onboard failed just over a minute after liftoff on Monday.
 • The New Shepard rocket, launched from Blue Origin's West Texas facility, carried cargo for research.
 • A livestream of the launch showed the rocket bursting into flames around 29,000 feet above ground.

A Blue Origin rocket with no crew onboard failed just over a minute after lifting off on Monday.

The New Shepard rocket that took off from Blue Origin's West Texas facility on Monday was carrying cargo for research that it was going to send to the edge of space.

A livestream of the launch showed the New Shepard bursting into flames around 29,000 feet above ground. The capsule above the booster rocket then detached itself and parachuted back to the ground.

Blue Origin said on Twitter there was a "booster failure" on the flight, triggering the escape system. The capsule "successfully separated" from the rocket, the spaceflight company added.

It was the first major incident for billionaire Jeff Bezos' spaceflight company since it opened commercial services to the public in 2021.

The Federal Aviation Administration, or FAA, is investigating the incident, which it called a "mishap" in a statement sent to Insider.

"The capsule landed safely and the booster impacted within the designated hazard area. No injuries or public property damage have been reported," said the FAA.

"Before the New Shepard vehicle can return to flight, the FAA will determine whether any system, process, or procedure related to the mishap affected public safety. This is standard practice for all mishap investigations," the FAA added.

NASA confirms date for third launch attempt of next-gen rocket https://briefnews.eu/nasa-confirms-date-for-third-launch-attempt-of-next-gen-rocket/ https://briefnews.eu/nasa-confirms-date-for-third-launch-attempt-of-next-gen-rocket/#respond Tue, 13 Sep 2022 04:37:16 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/nasa-confirms-date-for-third-launch-attempt-of-next-gen-rocket/ Following two failed attempts to launch its new Space Launch System (SLS) rocket toward the moon, NASA on Monday confirmed a new schedule for a third effort to get the highly anticipated Artemis I mission underway.

The space agency said it is now aiming for Tuesday, September 27, for its next launch attempt. If that fails, it will try to send the rocket skyward on Sunday, October 2.

Last week, NASA said it was targeting Friday, September 23 for a launch attempt, but that date has now been scrapped.

Specifically, the September 27 launch attempt involves a 70-minute launch window that opens at 11:37 a.m. ET, with the Orion capsule arriving back on Earth about six weeks later on November 5. If that launch is unable to proceed, NASA will aim instead for October 2, with a 109-minute launch window opening at 2:52 p.m. ET and the spacecraft returning to Earth on November 11.

Prior to the attempted September 27 launch, NASA said it needs to perform a fueling test, an exercise it plans to conduct no earlier than Wednesday, September 21.

“The updated dates represent careful consideration of multiple logistical topics,” the agency said in a release on Monday, adding that the new timetable “also allow managers to ensure teams have enough rest and to replenish supplies of cryogenic propellants.”

NASA called off the August 29 launch attempt with just 40 minutes on the countdown clock after engineers identified an issue with one of the engines on the rocket’s core stage.

Five days later, it halted final preparations for another launch after a fuel leak came to the engineers’ attention.

The 97-meter-tall rocket and Orion spacecraft remain in place on the launchpad at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The uncrewed Artemis I mission will send the Orion on a fly-by of the moon, with the spacecraft returning to Earth six weeks later. If the test mission is a success, NASA will send astronauts on the same flight path for the Artemis II mission. Then, possibly in 2025, Artemis III will endeavor to put the first woman and first person of color on the lunar surface in the first crewed moon landing in five decades.

NASA wants to use the early Artemis missions to build a moon base for long-duration crewed missions, using what it learns for the first astronaut mission to Mars, possibly in the late 2030s.

NASA rocket repairs going to plan ahead of 3rd launch effort https://briefnews.eu/nasa-rocket-repairs-going-to-plan-ahead-of-3rd-launch-effort/ https://briefnews.eu/nasa-rocket-repairs-going-to-plan-ahead-of-3rd-launch-effort/#respond Mon, 12 Sep 2022 03:10:14 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/nasa-rocket-repairs-going-to-plan-ahead-of-3rd-launch-effort/ NASA is working to get its next-generation rocket into orbit to finally launch the ambitious Artemis space exploration program.

Following failed attempts to blast the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket skyward on August 29 and September 3, NASA engineers at the Kennedy Space Center launch site in Florida have been working tirelessly to fix the issues that caused those countdowns to halt.

With the rocket still on the launchpad, the to-do list has included replacing the seals at the center of the hydrogen leak that occurred during fueling operations for the rocket’s second launch attempt.

“Engineers have replaced the seals associated with the hydrogen leak detected during the #Artemis I launch attempt on Sept. 3,” NASA confirmed on Saturday. “The teams will inspect the new seals over the weekend and assess opportunities to launch.”

— NASA Artemis (@NASAArtemis) September 9, 2022

The launch team is now aiming to conduct a tanking demonstration as soon as September 17, a procedure designed to check the new seals under super-cold conditions that replicate the conditions on launch day.

The tanking demonstration will involve loading liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen in the SLS rocket’s core stage and interim cryogenic propulsion stage and getting to a stable replenish state for both propellants, NASA said.

Engineers will also conduct several other tests to validate the ground and flight hardware and software systems’ ability to perform the necessary functions required to thermally condition the engines for flight.

Once all of these preparations have been successfully carried out, the team will assess the data and make a final decision on whether to go for launch before the end of this month.

The upcoming Artemis I missions is one of the most highly anticipated NASA events in years as it will usher in a new era of space exploration that will soon involve astronaut missions to the moon and even Mars.

When the uncrewed Artemis I launch takes place hopefully in the coming weeks, the most powerful rocket NASA has ever built will propel the new Orion spacecraft toward the moon, where it’ll perform a fly-by before returning to Earth about six weeks later.

A successful mission will pave the way for Artemis II that will see the Orion take the same route though this time with a crew on board.

Artemis III, which could take place as early as 2025, will endeavor to put the first woman and first person of color on the lunar surface in what will also be the first astronaut landing since the final Apollo mission in 1972.

But that’s just the start, as NASA wants to build a moon base for long-duration astronaut missions, and also send the first crew to Mars in a historic voyage that could take place in the late 2030s. But before that can happen, there is still much work to be done.

This will be the second attempt at launching its Alpha rocket, after a previous attempt around this time last year came to a dramatic end. Firefly will be hoping for a better outcome this time around, and if you’d like to watch the launch attempt then we’ve got the details on the livestream of the launch below.

What to expect from the launch

The launch is to take place from Firefly’s launch site (SLC-2) at Vandenberg Space Force Base. The aim of the mission, named Alpha Flight 2, is to deliver satellites into low-Earth orbit. These include payloads that are re-creations of the payloads which were lost in the first launch attempt in September last year.

The payloads included in the mission include a three-unit CubeSat called Serenity from the group Teachers in Space, which carries a suite of sensors and a camera pointed at Earth and is designed for educational purposes. The NASA TechEdSat-15 is another three-unit CubeSat which is a test of an exo-brake device designed to use the drag of Earth’s atmosphere to slow and direct satellites. And the PicoBus is a deployer that will deliver eight tiny satellites, called picosatellites, to test an open source approach to telecommunications constellations.

The intention is to deploy the payloads around one hour after liftoff. The Alpha rocket carrying the payloads is almost 100 feet tall and is 71 inches in diameter, and is made from a lightweight carbon fiber composite.

How to watch the launch

Firefly will be livestreaming the launch attempt with its partner, Everyday Astronaut. The livestream is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. ET (2 p.m. PT) on Sunday, September 11, with the launch itself scheduled for 6 p.m. ET (3 p.m. PT). The link to the livestream will be available on Firefly’s website, or you can go directly to Everyday Astronaut’s page about the mission.

Inside the long, drawn-out battle for Georgia’s spaceport. In a lengthy feature article, NBC news explores the long, seven-year battle in Georgia to develop a spaceport that would launch rockets over two barrier islands. Remarkably, with an annual budget of just $ 57 million, Camden County has so far spent $ 12 million in taxpayer money on the heretofore futile effort. “We’re paying taxes year after year after year for the spaceport, but nothing has materialized,” said Camden resident Steve Weinkle, who has become one of the most vocal opponents of the project. “This is our ‘bridge to nowhere.’”

Rocket Lab successfully fires flown engine. In May an Electron rocket launched the “There and Back Again” mission, and then attempted to recover the first stage by catching it with a helicopter. While the pilot succeeded in briefly grappling onto the rocket, it had to be dropped due to unexpected loads on the line attached to the helicopter. Nevertheless, when Rocket Lab recovered the first stage from the ocean the company said it was in quite good condition. On Thursday, the company said it has successfully test-fired one of that rocket’s nine Rutherford engines.
