“Of course, the great thing about television is that it lets you see events live as they happen, like old movies from thirty years ago.” — Rock Hunter
“I wanted to make a picture where I got a laugh faster than anyone else – I guess that’s where it started,” said director Frank Tashlin, explaining the opening sequence to Will Success Spoil Rock Hudson? to Peter Bogdanovich for Who the Devil Made It: Conversations with Legendary Film Directors, the 1997 book. “Also, I hate credits,” said Tashlin. “Who wants to sit there and read all those names?”
Tashlin, who got his start making Looney Tunes shorts, never wavered from his cartoony comedy roots. His live-action films maintain the breakneck speed and wild exaggerations usually found in animation, shedding a harsh light on the emerging consumerism and throwaway culture. In Rock Hunter, his send-up of the world of advertising and the rat-race of the 1950s, Tashlin created perhaps his most biting satire of what he saw as the “nonsense of civilization.” Replicating the overstimulation of a culture that moves toward excessively vulgar images, even before the Twentieth Century logo appears at the beginning of the film, Tashlin’s comedy is at work.
Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? is about an ad-man, Rockwell P. Hunter (Tony Randall), who needs a famous star, Rita Marlowe (Jayne Mansfield doing a thinly-veiled Marilyn Monroe parody),…

With Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff and AJ Odudu at the helm of the ITV show, two teams of celebrities went head to head take on an almighty challenge on the water. The likes of The Chase’s Shaun Wallace, former Labour deputy Tom Watson and Love Island’s Jack Fincham were tasked with rowing approximately 100 miles in order to beat their opposition. However, the graphic scenes of “puking and s*****g” led to some viewers turning off.
The extreme nature of the challenge soon caught up with the Don’t Rock the Boat stars with Craig Charles the first to exhibit its side effects.
The Red Dwarf star found himself vomiting within the first hour of the challenge, with the physical exertion also turning his stomach at the other end too.
Jodie Kidd quipped it was impressive Craig was “puking and s*****g” so soon but he wasn’t the only one who became overwhelmed with the challenge.
Pussycat Dolls singer Kimberly Wyatt also found herself puking over the side of the boat.

NBC is expanding its partnership with Titans Game host Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, placing a straight-to-series order for a sitcom about the wrestler-turned-actor’s tumultuous childhood, TVLine has learned.
Titled Young Rock, the project — which has snagged an 11-episode Season 1 order — will serve as an exec producer as well as a cast member. Per NBC, Johnson “will appear in each episode as the focus and inspiration of the series will be about his formative years.”
Fresh Off the Boat creator Nahnatchka Khan co-wrote the pilot with FOTB co-exec producer Jeff Chiang and the duo will serve as EPs alongside Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, Brian Gewirtz and Jennifer Carreras.
Johnson bounced around a lot as a kid, attending high schools in Hawaii, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania, during which he had multiple brushes with the law. He was reportedly arrested multiple times for fighting, theft, and check fraud before the age of 17.

Nearly 25 years after being booted from Saturday Night Live, former cast member Adam Sandler returned to Studio 8H with a lot to get off his chest — in song, naturally.
Sandler’s musical confession came during his monologue. After acknowledging his wife and kids in the audience, he said that his daughter once asked why he left SNL if it was really the greatest time of his life, as he always told her. The answer, he sang, was simple:
“I was fired, I was fired. I was fired, sad to tell. Well I never saw it coming, I got fired from SNL. Between seasons I heard a nasty rumor that I was getting the sack. I tried to call Lorne Michaels, but he never called me back. … I guess NBC had enough of Crazy Spoon Head and the songs I sang on the news. Maybe the were sick of Canteen Boy, but I think they just hate the Jews. I was fired, not rehired, well it made me sad and blue. I told my boy Chris Farley I got fired — and he said, ‘Same, man. They fired my ass, too.’”
Sandler was then joined by fellow former cast member Chris Rock, who also spun a sad tale of woe from his SNL days: “I got fired, I was fired, I was fired by NBC. Then I went on In Living Color. Three weeks later, they took it off TV.”
Current cast member Pete Davidson was the next to take the stage, though Sandler was quick to explain that he hasn’t been fired yet. “I wasn’t?” Davidson replied. “How that’s even possible.”
“I don’t know,” Sandler told him. “But be patient. It’s coming soon.” He then returned to his solo act: “Well, it broke my heart to pieces, cause SNL was my home. Where could I do my silly voices now? I never felt so alone. … Yeah, I was fired. I was fired. NBC said that I was done. Then I made over $ 4 billion at the box office, so I guess you could say I won.”
Then came the big finish: “So I was fired, but tonight I’m rehired, and I’m the happiest man alive. Cause it feels so good to be back with you here tonight where it all began for me, right here on Saturday Night Live.”

Author Ann Leckie may not be the first to explore the consequences of ruling sentient beings and dueling AIs within a book, though her award-winning sci-fi novel Ancillary Justice and its sequels suggested there were still new storytelling ideas in the conceit. For instance, what if that dystopian-future lens was applied to the fantasy genre?
The answer comes in Leckie’s newest book, The Raven Tower, and it’s the first in a fantasy series that focuses on mysterious gods and the kingdoms they watch over. It’s a challenging first installment that will capture the interest of fantasy nerds if they can grasp all of this world’s moving parts—including some that the gods themselves don’t fully understand.

Happy Valentine’s Day! Let’s talk about divorce!
Eddie and Katherine’s heretofore civil divorce mediations hit a major snag in this week’s A Million Little Things, and the fact that the episode airs on a holiday traditionally devoted to love is just the icing on the heart-shaped cake, no?
Read on for the highlights of “The Rock.”
KICK THE BUCKET LIST | Maggie wraps her last round of chemo and has an 80 percent chance of doing well, but ahead of her surgery she wants Gary to take her to Plymouth, Mass. As far as bucket-list items go, it’s fairly tame, but who am I to judge? “I know it’s not exactly skydiving,” Maggie admits, but she and her brother used to pretend a rock in their backyard was Plymouth Rock, so it has emotional significance.
Their departure is delayed three times, all on account of doing favors for their extended friend group. Long story short: They don’t make it to Plymouth during the day. “We can go to Plymouth Rock when I’m well again,” Maggie says offhandedly, but Gary notes that it’s a much more optimistic take than she’s had in the past. “My old bucket list was about the past. My new bucket list is about the future,” she says. OH MY GOD SHE’S GOING TO DIE, ISN’T SHE?
Gary’s good mood takes a real hit later that evening when he gets some bad news about Linda, the salty woman he and Maggie knew from chemo. She had a pulmonary embolism at some point during the day, and died. Gary can’t bring himself to tell Maggie, though. Instead, he insists that they drive to Plymouth Rock that night.
DON’T HATE, MEDIATE | Katherine and Eddie’s divorce mediation is going well enough until the topic of Theo’s guardianship comes up. Previously, it was Jon and Delilah, but now that Jon’s dead and Delilah is preggo with Eddie’s kid… well, you can understand the complication. She leaves the mediation in a huff, but when Eddie drives by a very recent car accident down the street, he realizes that the car tipped on its side belongs to his soon-to-be-ex-wife, and she’s still inside.
Katherine is fine, but she’s taken to the hospital in an ambulance, and a shaken Eddie follows close behind. When she’s home and icing her knee, she reflects on how close she came to not ever seeing their son again, and that reopens the conversation about who will take Theo if they both die. Before you can say “infidelity,” they’re arguing again.
Eventually, though, after realizing Eddie stood up Delilah to stay by her side all day, Katherine softens and offers the guardianship to Gary. He shrugs it off, but Maggie gets serious with him: “If I’m alive a year from now, it’s because of you,” she says, saying that his brand of support and love is exactly what Theo would need. “You didn’t let me say no, so I’m not going to let you say no,” she adds. So he changes his mind and agrees.
OH, BROTHER | When Rome’s father shows up, unannounced, for an early morning visit, neither Rome nor Regina has a clue what’s up. Pretty soon, though, Dad makes his pitch: Rome’s brother is visiting, and Mom and Dad would rather that he stay with Rome. Rome, however, would not. It seems that his brother, Omar (hi, Saturday Night Live‘s Jay Pharoah!), is a bit of a hot mess who pretty much lives on Rome’s last nerve.
But when the brothers have some alone time playing video games, Omar confesses that he’s visiting without his wife because they’re going to divorce. When Rome tries to sympathize and prepares to tell Omar about his suicide attempt, Omar goes on about their different lives and mocks Rome in a way that makes him clam up.
Later at Someday, Gina nervously wonders which of her customers is the anonymous food blogger rumored to show up that night. So she gladhands the entire place while Rome and Omar dine with their dad. It eventually turns ugly when Rome’s dad makes a snarky remark about his “pills,” so they have a Big Feelings conversation in the restaurant’s kitchen. “I don’t have to worry about you,” Dad says. “Maybe you should,” Rome says, wiping away a tear. “Sometimes, you should.”
At home, Rome realizes that he’s been taking out his anger on his dad. And after Regina goes to bed, the brothers start to open up to each other.
PRYING EYES | While Delilah installs a new car seat in her backseat at the end of the hour, we realize that MaybeBarbara Morgan is watching her from a car across the street. She takes a call from someone named Mitch Nelson, who tells her to leave the situation alone. Then MaybeBarbara tells him Delilah is expecting, which seems like news to her.

L-R: Arone Dyer and Aron Sanchez perform as Buke and Gase in November 2018. Each holds one of the band’s titular, custom-built instruments: a baritone ukulele and a guitar-bass fusion. [credit:

NEW YORK CITY—The band brings to the stage: two stringed instruments, neither of which look exactly like a bass or a guitar; two grids of foot-triggered effects pedals and switches; two music stands, covered with a smattering of synthesizers, touchscreens, and touch-sensitive pads; two laptops, connected to this variety of inputs in a center console; and two foot-triggered pieces of percussion.
One of those is a compact kick-drum rig, connected to the laptops. The other is a bicycling shoe with tambourine parts welded onto its sides and sole.
This pre-show array of gear usually elicits curious looks from crowds who wonder what kind of noise is about to emerge. But the band Buke and Gase are here for a homecoming show of sorts. They’re fresh off a nationwide tour with Shellac, among the esteemed post-punk bands to have ties to the genre’s original DIY movement. They’ve just put the final touches on their new album, titled Scholars, set to launch two months later (as in, January 18). People are here to celebrate.

Steve Hackett
At The Edge Of Light
(Inside Out)
***** 5 stars
Steve Hackett has had many Eureka! moments during his stellar Genesis and solo career and his latest At The Edge Of Light continue his golden roll of inspired releases. The intense recipe of world (and otherworldly) musical sounds on this faultless recording, explode in all directions like a sonic firecracker of wondrous mellifluence.
Cleverly flipping between traditional rock music instrumentation and the more exotic, Hackett re-affirms his maestro status from the off on the subtle Fallen Walls and Pedestals before unleashing a musical monster on Beasts in Our Time.
The gospel-tinged Underground Railway and the melodious Those Golden Wings unfurl an epic adventure of instrumentation throughout their densely textured compositions.
However, it’s the final coup de grace of Descent, Conflict and Peace which finds Hackett unchained and fully let loose, with orchestral backing, bringing this outstanding recording to a fiery finale.
Thunder
Please Remain Seated
(BMG)
**** 4 Stars
A radical re-working of their most cherished songs, from a peerless back catalogue of UK hard rock classics, has breathed not only new life but, in most cases, produced totally fresh and surprising perspectives.
The hard veneer of the original recordings has been softly polished revealing a surprising depth and texture as the band’s versatility bends these classy tunes to their will. Like musical alchemists, Thunder runs the gamut of musical styles as they turn hard rock faves Girl’s Going Out of Her Head and Fly on the Wall into both woozy jazzy blues and lilting reggae tones respectively.
And these re-imagining revelations find them re-branding the cutting hard edge of Empty City into a laid back bluesy beauty too.
Perversely proving that there is more to the less is more adage with the sharp re-arrangements of these hard rock standards from their vaults, Thunder has re-invented the musical wheel and roll with swaggering style on this first-class release.
Papa Roach
Who Do You Trust?
(Eleven Seven Music)
**** 4 Stars
Hard to define, yet Papa Roach has racked up over 20 million sales and counting with their catchy, rhythmic sonic wall of guitar sound.
Big choruses and heavy guitar chords dominate this cracking release as Maniac and the more experimental nuances of Elevate amply demonstrates.
Yet it’s the visceral energy on I Suffer Well and the ambient-tinged Better Than Life which reveals the range and musical vision of a band not afraid to still take risks.
