When Hollywood actor-director Hopwood DePree was growing up in the US state of Michigan, his exotic name was the source of a good deal of grief.

“Kids would beat me up when they found out my real name,” he says. “They said I should have been named Bob. Or Steve.”

Things got so bad that he decided to call himself Tod instead.

But in later life he learned to embrace his “weird” name after discovering that he had been given it as part of a family tradition aimed at keeping alive their links to a distinguished line of English gentry that had lived in a 60-room stately home near Manchester for centuries.

Last September he took the extraordinary decision to sell his home in Los Angeles (which enjoys 12 hours of sun a day in April) and move to Lancashire (21 days of rain) spurred on by a dream of restoring the crumbling ruin to its former glory.

“My grandfather used to talk about Hopwood Hall when I was a boy but I always thought he was telling a fairy tale,” he says.

“Years later I was living in LA and one night while looking online at an ancestry website I was amazed to realise Hopwood Hall was real and still standing.

“I sent an email and the next day I had responses saying the hall was in need of help and wondering if I would be coming to England any time soon.”

The director of TV film Gordo’s Road Show – and once named among “20 People To Know” by The Hollywood Reporter – duly booked a flight to Manchester to scope out the house for himself.

It must have made for a depressing sight. Burglars had stolen the lead from the roof with the result that rainwater had been leaking in for years.

Thieves had also made off with parquet flooring and York stone paving. Walls were covered in graffiti and much of the woodwork had dry rot. DePree was not discouraged, however.

“The first time I walked into Hopwood Hall I was blown away by how old it was – dating to at least 1426 and perhaps earlier. I was taken into a room with intricate wood carvings in the oldest part of the hall and learnt that this is where my 14th great-grandfather was born. I was completely moved.”

In its heyday the Grade II-listed manor house employed 28 gardeners to maintain its parkland, gardens, ice house and grotto and hosted guests of the stature of Lord Byron. When the invitations went out for George V’s coronation in 1911, Colonel ERG Hopwood of the Lancashire Hussars was on the list.

But after the two last remaining heirs to Hopwood Hall were killed in the First World War, it gradually fell into disrepair.

Meanwhile, DePree’s branch of the family had settled in the US in the 1700s and, at the time the American War of Independence broke out in 1775, Moses Hopwood was running a plantation 20 miles from one owned by George Washington.

When the first US president needed an aide-de-camp, he settled on Moses’ son John, who went on to serve Washington throughout the eight-year conflict.

The Hopwood surname was lost in the late 19th century when Alcinda Hopwood married one Newton Black but, as we have seen, male heirs were christened Hopwood to remind them of their roots.

Fast forward a century or so and our hero is determined to revive the ancient family seat. “I was told that experts estimated the hall would be lost within five to 10 years unless something was done to save it,” says DePree, 47.

“I immediately felt a strong obligation – thinking if I am the only Hopwood currently on earth in a position to save it, then I must.”

After signing a deal with the current owner, Rochdale Council, that gives him three years to put in place a financial plan for its renovation and transformation into a centre for the arts, he moved to the UK on a three-year visa.

There were some teething problems, notably when he was laughed out of a local chippie for trying to pay for a pie with his American Express card, but he insists the area is “one of those places where I instantly feel at home”.

He moved into a rented house near the home and hopes to be living there soon. “I am refurbishing a small flat in the hall that will be a temporary living accommodation. Living there will provide an extra layer of security as well as create new life and energy at the hall.”

His priorities are to stabilise the building and make it weather-proof. He has roped in various local colleges to help.

Students at Manchester School of Architecture are working on renovation proposals. Horticulturalists at Hopwood College are helping with the garden and he is in talks with the college’s bricklaying course to use its apprentices to help rebuild the boundary walls.

He has received £276,000 from Historic England and Rochdale Borough Council for emergency works and he plans to raise the £6-£10million he will need to complete the project through a combination of grants, donations and private equity funding.

“Moving to England has been a huge life change but I love it,” he says.

“I’m open to experiencing British life. I’m now a tea drinker, I like fish and chips and I bought a waxed coat, wellies and a cap.” And of course an umbrella.

Pochettino hails Tottenham striker Llorente and slams VAR after FA Cup win over Rochdale https://briefnews.eu/pochettino-hails-tottenham-striker-llorente-and-slams-var-after-fa-cup-win-over-rochdale/ https://briefnews.eu/pochettino-hails-tottenham-striker-llorente-and-slams-var-after-fa-cup-win-over-rochdale/#respond Thu, 01 Mar 2018 01:45:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pochettino-hails-tottenham-striker-llorente-and-slams-var-after-fa-cup-win-over-rochdale/

Tottenham booked their place in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup after a resounding 6-1 win over Rochdale at Wembley.

VAR came into sharp focus once again as Spurs had two goals chalked off – one for Erik Lamela and the other a penalty after Heung Son-Min was penalised for illegal feinting in his run-up.

Rochdale nearly went 2-1 ahead after the restart but were denied by the base of the post.

However, Fernando Llorente, who was given a rare start, hit a hat-trick as the north London outfit romped to a 6-1 victory in snowy conditions.

And Pochettino revealed his delight for Llorente, as he said: “I’m so happy because the job is done, we are in the quarter-finals and that was our objective.

“I’m happy for different players, for Fernando [Llorente] with his hat-trick and Kyle Walker-Peters because he scored, and I think the performance was good.”

But he explained that VAR didn’t help matters, adding: “The first half was so difficult, it’s so difficult to stop and start and be focused on the game but in the end I’m happy with the result and now we’re in the quarter-finals.

“The first half was so difficult to maintain the focus because a lot of controversial decisions from the VAR but in the end I’m happy, in the second half we were focused on playing football and then we fully deserved it after the performance.”

Elaborating on the pitfalls with VAR, Pochettino said: “I took the players to keep focused at half-time.

“The circumstances were difficult. I think we have the best referees in Europe or the world but I don’t know if this system will help them or cause more confusion. It is a game of emotion.

“If we are going to kill this emotion I think we are going to change the game.

“It’s difficult for the referee – I feel so sorry for the referee and more I feel sorry for the fans because it’s so difficult to understand the situation.”

Pochettino’s counterpart, Keith Hill, expressed sympathy for the referee over VAR.

He said: “It was confusing. Now I have been a part of what VAR is, I feel sorry for the referee. I think the decisions need to be explained to the crowd. The visuals need to be used better.

“I hope that eventually they explain it to the supporters.”

Spurs will face Swansea in the last eight of the competition on March 17.

Spurs thought they had won it when Dele Alli had controversially earned a penalty and Harry Kane put it away.

But 30-year-old Steve Davies popped up with the leveller two minutes into stoppage time.

Lucas Moura had earlier cancelled out Ian Henderson’s opener in this tight battle at Spotland.

Spurs thought they had won it when Kane smashed home from the spot after Alli went down under a Harrison McGahey challenge.

But Davies was given time and space to control and shoot in the box, securing Dale a well-deserved Wembley replay.

The Betrayed Girls: True story of the Rochdale grooming scandal https://briefnews.eu/the-betrayed-girls-true-story-of-the-rochdale-grooming-scandal/ https://briefnews.eu/the-betrayed-girls-true-story-of-the-rochdale-grooming-scandal/#respond Mon, 03 Jul 2017 14:46:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-betrayed-girls-true-story-of-the-rochdale-grooming-scandal/

Earlier this year the BBC aired Three Girls, an account of the Rochdale scandal which horrified the nation in May 2012.

Tonight, a new documentary turns the focus to the real people at the heart of the story.

It features interviews with Sara Rowbotham, a sexual health worker who helped expose the abuse, and former Greater Manchester Police constable Maggie Oliver, who quit the force in protest at officials’ treatment of the victims.

The one-off show also includes the harrowing testimony from victims whose stories have not been told before.

What happened in Rochdale?

In 2012 it was revealed that at least 47 young girls had been systematically raped and sexually trafficked by a gang of Asian men in Rochdale, Greater Manchester.

The girls, who were as young as 13 years old and were mostly white, were plied with alcohol and drugs before being “passed around” for sex.

Several of the victims fell pregnant by their abusers, including one named in court only as Girl A (given the fictional name Holly in Three Girls).

Girl A’s parents were told by social services that she was a “prostitute” who had made a “lifestyle choice” to sleep with men.

“Quite a few people rang social services – the school, the police, the sexual health team from Heywood, even my own dad rang social services to get help,’ she told BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour in September 2012.

“Basically they told my mum and dad that because I was only six months off turning 16 they wasn’t gonna do anything.”

“Then when I found out I was pregnant and social services was informed of that, they basically said if I don’t leave that house they were going to remove my child at birth, but they never did anything to help me.”

Another girl, who was given the made-up name Amber in Three Girls, was abused from the age of 14 and went on to become a recruiter for the gang.

She would often accompany other girls during encounters and coerce them into having sex.

During a 2012 court trial, Girl A told how she was effectively groomed by the “intimidating” older girl.

She said: “I believe if it was not for her I would not have got into what was going on.”

‘Amber’ escaped prosecution because she was it was judged that she was also a victim, whose moral code had been skewed by years of abuse.

What happened to the abusers?

Nine men were convicted thanks in part to evidence collected by Sara Rowbotham, a front-line sexual health worker.

Ms Rowbotham made more than 181 referrals to the police between 2005 and 2011, many of which went ignored.

Undeterred she continued to collect evidence which later proved crucial in court.

“Because of our nonjudgmental approach, we were able to win [the girls’] trust in a way that police and social services could not,” Ms Rowbotham wrote in The Guardian earlier this year.

“The girls knew we weren’t there to try to get evidence from them – we were there to help and support them. As a result, our centre became something of a refuge where teenagers would pop by for a brew and a chat.”

Shabir Ahmed, the gang’s ringleader, was jailed for a total of 19 years for conspiracy, two counts of rape, aiding and abetting a rape, sexual assault and a count of trafficking within the UK for sexual exploitation.

He was later given a 22 year sentence for 30 separate charges of child rape.

Eight other men were imprisoned for child sex and trafficking offences.

However only Ahmed and another man, Mohammed Sajid, remain behind bars.

Worried residents have reported seeing some of the paedophiles back in the local community.

One worried resident told the Mirror: “A lot of girls they abused will still be living here. People need to know they are back.”

Ahmed and three other men are currently facing deportation to Pakistan after losing a legal appeal against their British citizenship being revoked.

Why did the Rochdale grooming scandal continue for so long?

Maggie Oliver claims that Greater Manchester Police were aware that girls in Rochdale were being targeted as early as 2003.

“At that point, it was just about looking into whether or not there was anything there, it wasn’t being described as on-street grooming,” she told The Telegraph.

Oliver convinced police chiefs to launch a full investigation, Operation Augusta, which identified dozens of young victims.

But when Oliver took a leave of absence in 2005 to care for her dying husband, she returned to find the probe has been closed without a single arrest.

“For every one of those victims that I knew were being abused in 2003, that was allowed to evolve over a period of almost 10 years, before we got to the trial,” she said.

A new investigation was launched in 2008, when Girl A was arrested following a disturbance and told officers about the abuse.

Detectives took her claims seriously and questioned two of the rapists, one of whom was Ahmed.

But a year later the Crown Prosecution Service decided not to charge the abusers based on the perceived credibility of the victims.

In 2011 a new chief crown prosecutor, Nazir Afal, overturned the decision.

“I formed the opinion she was entirely credible and the two suspects should be charged,” he said.

Oliver became involved in what was now known as Operation Span on the condition that the girls would be supported if they spoke out.

She was tasked with winning back the trust of ‘Amber’, who had been let down by the 2008 investigation.

“The powers that be were begging me to get her to trust me. And she did, and she named 30 men that had raped her over a period of months,” said Oliver.

“I put my heart and soul into this because I believed this was our opportunity to deal with this kind of crime. I didn’t really know the scale of the abuse but I knew that what was happening in Rochdale was what I’d seen before.”

‘Amber’ was eventually dropped as a witness and named on the indictment, although she was not prosecuted.

This led to Oliver quitting the police after 15 years with the force.

“I’ve walked away from a career that I love because I believe so strongly that 10 years down the line, when somebody turns around and says ‘why did nobody speak out about this’ I can look in the mirror and known that I have done the right thing, she told the BBC in 2013.

A report by The Rochdale Borough Safeguarding Children Board found that police and social services had “missed opportunities” to stop the abuse because of “deficiencies” and “patchy” training of front-line staff.

Rochdale MP Simon Danczuk said after the report was published: “The biggest issue to come out of this report is that Greater Manchester Police were effectively discriminating against poor, white, working-class girls. So that’s not about a failure to spot abuse, that is about actively ignoring abuse that was going on when it was brought to their attention.”

An inquiry into historic child sex abuse in Rochdale was announced in 2015 and will take five years to complete.

The Betrayed Girls airs at 8.30pm tonight on BBC One.

The tragic scandal inspired the BBC’s controversial drama Three Girls, which has moved audiences to tears and seen thousands call for its real-life subjects to be awarded OBEs.

Though, the trauma lives on for the 47 known victims of the Rochdale sex ring, while one, who went under the false moniker of “Lily” on the ITV show, has spoken out about being groomed from as young as 11-years-old.

“They build the trust first and the first time I got taken into a taxi nothing happened,” she told hosts Kate Garraway and Ben Shephard. “They just took me home and gave me some like fags, and that to me was kind of like they are looking after me – they are trying to keep me safe.

“They took me off the street and brought me home.”

When asked by Shephard whether that was the first time she felt like there was an adult looking after her, Lily said: “Yeah, yeah I did. You know, that was the first time I kind of felt accepted, wanted, safe.”

Recalling what happened after she reported the abuse, Lily explained: “I just felt like I was ignored because I’d been told that this thing that happened to me was really, really horrific, but when I actually tried to report it nothing happened.

“That kind of made me go back to thinking, well there’s nothing wrong with what’s going on because if there was something wrong, and it was really bad, then the police would have done something.”

Lily also revealed that she had a horrific encounter with one of her attackers just “weeks ago”.

“I thought, ‘What can I do?’” she sighed. “He’s done his time, he’s free.”

She admitted that while her life is “a lot better”, she gets terrified of going out.

“I’m scared about what I’m going out to,” she said.

Policewoman who quit over Rochdale grooming scandal https://briefnews.eu/three-girls-who-is-margaret-oliver-policewoman-who-quit-over-rochdale-grooming-scandal/ https://briefnews.eu/three-girls-who-is-margaret-oliver-policewoman-who-quit-over-rochdale-grooming-scandal/#respond Wed, 17 May 2017 14:45:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/three-girls-who-is-margaret-oliver-policewoman-who-quit-over-rochdale-grooming-scandal/

The drama is based on the harrowing true story of the Rochdale grooming scandal.

At least 47 young and vulnerable girls were raped, trafficked and abused by a gang of predominantly Pakistani men – nine of whom were jailed in 2012 for a range of child sex offences.

Tonight’s episode introduces Margaret Oliver (Lesley Sharp), a detective constable for Greater Manchester Police (GMP) who eventually resigned over the Rochdale grooming scandal.

Who is Margaret Oliver?

Margaret was assigned as witness manager to two girls who between them said that they had been abused by 20 different men in Rochdale.

“I went to them and I convinced them that they are victims of these men, I convinced them that we needed them as witnesses to protect other victims from these same men,” she told the BBC in 2013.

“They put their trust in me, I put my trust in GMP to honour those obligations.”

When she learned that the Crown Prosecution Service had decided not to call one of the girls as a witness, Margaret said that she felt “ashamed” to be a police officer.

“I feel that had the full facts been heard from the girls, we would have got heavier sentences and there wouldn’t be offenders still walking the streets of Rochdale,” she said.

The mother-of-four resigned from her job of 15 years in October 2012. She said that she was concerned that allegations of sexual abuse were not being recorded by police.

“I’ve walked away from a career that I love because I believe so strongly that 10 years down the line, when somebody turns around and says ‘why did nobody speak out about this’ I can look in the mirror and known that I have done the right thing,” she said.

Five years on, ahead of the launch of Three Girls, Margaret told The Guardian: “I tried with every ounce of my determination to highlight to the chief constable and all the agencies – the IPCC, the children’s commissioner, the Home Office select committee – what was going on, but without success.

“No one really wanted to hear what I was saying and eventually I was left with a stark choice.”

In 2015, GMP acknowledged that “mistakes were made and victims let down” in the Rochdale investigation, and apologised to the victims.

The force looked at the conduct of 13 officers between 2008 and 2010 and served notices of misconduct on seven.

One of those officers was set to face disciplinary action, but was allowed to retire any sanctions could be imposed.

Margaret revealed that she is still in contact with some of the victims who say that many of their abusers remain free men.

“I’m speaking to kids who are telling me that even to this day they are seeing offenders that they’ve named, walking around Rochdale,” she said.

“Somebody saw one in London, another person told me that one has moved around the corner from her.

“That’s why I’m saying things haven’t changed, because those men have been named by those girls  and I know that they’re still out there walking around.”

The three-part series is based on the harrowing experiences of child abuse victims in Rochdale.

Created by the team behind the 2010 real-crime series Five Daughters, it is the result of years worth of research and stars Maxine Peake, Lesley Sharpe and .

The s director of content Charlotte Moore said: “The team has spent three years talking to the girls, unravelling the shocking scale of abuse, the horror of what they’ve been through and the enormous courage it’s taken for them to speak out.”

What happened in Rochdale?

At least 47 young girls were sexually abused by a child grooming gang in Rochdale, Greater Manchester in the years leading up to 2012.

Eight of the rapists were Pakistani, with one from Afghanistan. They plied the girls, who were overwhelmingly white and as young as 13, with alcohol and drugs before they were “passed around” for sex.

One of the 15-year-old victims had sex with 20 men in one night while drunk. Another was raped by two men while she was vomiting over the side of a bed.

One child told how she was recruited by another girl, known as The Honey Monster, and was forced to have six with up to five men a night, four or five times a week.

The victim, known as Girl A, had become estranged from her parents who were told by social services that she was a “prostitute” who had made a “lifestyle choice”.

“Basically they told my mum and dad that because I was only 6 months off turning 16 they wasn’t gonna do anything,” Girl A told BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour in September 2012.

Her ordeal only ended when teachers noticed that Asian men were frequently picking her up from school.

“I was getting phone calls in school asking me to walk out of school,” Girl A said.

“I was coming into school with flea bites all over my body and dirty clothes smelling of alcohol, smelling anyway from being unclean.

“I was very quiet. Quite a few people rang social services – the school, the police, the sexual health team from Heywood, even my own dad rang social services to get help.”

After moving out of her parents house Girl A moved in with another family, where by coincidence, The Honey Monster also lived.

“Then when I found out I was pregnant and social services was informed of that, they basically said if I don’t leave that house they were going to remove my child at birth, but they never did anything to help me,” Girl A said.

In 2012 the nine men were jailed for child sex offences including conspiracy to engage in sexual activity  ith children under the age of 16, rape, sexual assault and trafficking.

The abusers’ ringleader Shabir Ahmed was jailed for a total of 19 years for conspiracy, two counts of rape, aiding and abetting a rape, sexual assault and a count of trafficking within the UK for sexual exploitation.

He was later given a 22 year sentence for 30 separate charges of child rape, in a case involving a young Asian girl.

Ahmed and three other men are currently facing deportation to Pakistan after losing a legal appeal agains their British citizenship being revoked.

Why did it take so long for the Rochdale scandal to come to light?

Social services and police “missed opportunities” to stop the abuse because of “deficiencies” and “patchy” training of front-line staff, a report by The Rochdale Borough Safeguarding Children Board found.

Following the report, Rochdale Borough Council apologised for letting the victims down.

“Keeping children safe from harm is the most important thing a local authority does, and we accept the conclusions and recommendations in the report,” the council’s chief executive Jim Taylor said.

During the trial it emerged that police had the opportunity to stop the abuse in 2008, when Girl A was arrested following a disturbance and told officers what was happening to her.

Sara said that she had multiple calls to the police ignored and was told by social services – like Girl A’s parents were – that the children were making “lifestyle choices”.

Maxine Peake, who plays Sara in Three Girls, told press including Express.co.uk: “Sara was constantly fighting, constantly being ignored and she said, ‘You start to think you’re going mad, you start to think you’re losing your mind because the powers that be are not helping you’.

“They weren’t encouraging her, they were shutting doors, people were telling her to be quiet, they weren’t interested.”

A separate inquiry into historic child sex abuse in Rochdale was announced in 2015 and will take five years to complete.

Eight men were jailed in 2012 for child sex offence against girls in Rochdale

What happened after the Rochdale grooming trial?

In 2016 a further nine men were jailed for up to 25 years after being found guilty of sexual offences against girls in Rochdale.

A similar grooming scandal has been uncovered in Rotherham in recent years, with an estimated 1,400 girls said to have been abused between 1997 and 2013 by British-Pakistani men.

Twenty men have been jailed for child sex offences in relation to the Rotherham scandal within the past three years.

A report by Louise Casey found that a culture of sexism and bullying was present within Rotherham council, with whistleblowers ignored and any mention of ethnicity supressed “for fear of being seen as racist”.

A witness told the report: “There was no awareness. The view was that they were little slags. They didn’t understand the situation, and thought that the girls were happy, or complicit in it. The sense was that if there had been any offence it had been by the girls, for luring the men in.”

Casey added: “Rotherham’s suppression of these uncomfortable issues and its fear of being branded racist has done a disservice to the Pakistani heritage community as well as the wider community.

“It has prevented discussion and effective action to tackle the problem. This has allowed perpetrators to remain at large, has let victims down and, perversely, has allowed the far right to try and exploit the situation.”

Swearing ban will cost potty-mouthed Rochdale residents £100 https://briefnews.eu/swearing-ban-will-cost-potty-mouthed-rochdale-residents-100/ https://briefnews.eu/swearing-ban-will-cost-potty-mouthed-rochdale-residents-100/#respond Thu, 09 Mar 2017 14:04:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/swearing-ban-will-cost-potty-mouthed-rochdale-residents-100/ A human rights charity has hit out at Rochdale Council after the local authority imposed a ban on swearing, calling it a curb on residents’ rights.

Under the Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO), Rochdale Council could set a fine of up to £100 (US$ 122) on people caught using “foul and abusive language.”

The PSPO, which comes as part of a wider plan to tackle anti-social behavior, could also see other activities outlawed including skateboarding, drinking in public, begging, playing loud music and unauthorized charity collecting.

However, Lara ten Caten, legal officer for human rights group Liberty, said the council’s “staggering misuse” of the PSPO would restrict residents’ rights.

“These proposals are a staggering misuse of power which would unjustifiably curb the rights and freedoms of Rochdale residents,” she told the BBC.

“The swearing ban is so vaguely defined it would prove impossible for anyone to know whether they were breaking the law or not, while a blanket ban on begging will criminalize some of the most vulnerable people in the town.

“PSPOs are blunt instruments incapable of alleviating hardship or providing support.

“Sadly they are regularly being used to sweep anything or anyone ‘inconvenient’ from the streets.

“Until the government opens its eyes to the harm these powers cause, it’s up to our local authorities to act responsibly.”

The PSPO would give council officials the authority to impose fines of £100, which could rise to £1,000 if people fail to pay the sum.

Richard Farnell, leader of the Labour-held council, shrugged off Liberty’s concerns saying authorities are just trying to rid the area of “ne’er-do-wells.”

He justified the ban on the basis that Rochdale is investing £250 million to transform its town center and that it would not allow a bunch of “drunken and abusive idiots spoil it” for the public.

“With all the horrific human rights abuses happening around the world right now, I would have thought Liberty had bigger things to worry about,” Farnell said, according to the BBC.

“We are clamping down on a small minority of antisocial ne’er-do-wells who drunkenly shout and swear and harangue shoppers in our town center.”

Farnell insisted the ban would help authorities curb anti-social behavior and protect residents from those publicly engaging in activities deemed inappropriate.

“There have been instances, particularly with people who have been drinking, who have been shouting and swearing aggressively at shoppers,” Farnell told the Telegraph.

“When you are shopping with your children, that’s the last thing you want.

“It’s already a public order offence, but the police have limited resources so we want to give council officers the powers to help them with incidents like this.”

Liberty has been campaigning against PSPOs, which ban any activity seen as having a “detrimental effect on the quality of life of those in the locality,” since their introduction under the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act in 2014.

The charity says PSPOs “chip away at our civil liberties in towns and cities” across the UK.
