US workers lose more than $ 50 billion annually in wage theft by employers, whether by being asked to work “off the clock” or not being paid properly, a study by the Economic Policy Institute states.

“Given that wage theft disproportionately affects workers from low-income households – who are already struggling to make ends meet – the loss of wages can be devastating,” lead author Celine McNicholas from the Economic Policy Institute said.  

Through the efforts of the federal Department of Labor, state labor departments and private lawyers, almost $ 2 billion has been recovered in 39 states during 2015 and 2016. But with the wage theft estimated at more than $ 50 billion per year, that represents just fraction of the losses.

Wage theft occurs when employers refuse to pay promised wages, pay employees for only some of the hours they worked, or fail to pay overtime when an employee works for more than 40 hours in a week.

“This constitutes theft of nearly 10 percent of a minimum wage employee’s annual earnings – which can mean the difference between paying the rent and utilities or risking eviction or the loss of gas, water, or electric service,” the report said.

A full-time minimum wage worker earns $ 7.25 an hour, around $ 15,000 a year. If an employer asks her to work 15 minutes “off the clock” before and after her 8-hour shift, the extra half hour of unpaid work amounts to around $ 1,400 per year, the report said.

Several cities have passed legislation empowering local law enforcement to police wage theft. Under the Obama administration, the Department of Labor hired more investigators to go after problematic employers. It is unclear what will happen to the program under the Trump administration, which requested a 21 percent cut in the department’s budget for fiscal year 2018, according to Bloomberg.

California recovered nearly $ 117 million for workers between 2015 and 2016, followed by New York which won back $ 84.6 million. When adjusted by the size of the workforce, Connecticut with its 1.6 million workers was able to recover $ 9.66 per capita over those two years. By comparison, Indiana with its 3.3 million workers only recovered 19 cents per capita.

A young woman was arrested in Long Island, New York after robbing a bank while her 6-year-old daughter was apparently waiting in a taxi, local police said.

Diana Marini, 28, entered Chase Bank in Islandia, Long Island and handed a note demanding cash on Saturday afternoon, Suffolk County Police said in a statement. “The teller complied” and the woman grabbed an undisclosed amount of cash.

She fled in the taxi which was waiting for her outside. The “gangster’s” luck did not last for long, however, as police quickly tracked down the vehicle and arrested the woman. Apart from Marini, they found her 6-year-old daughter inside the car. The girl was apparently waiting in the taxi while her mother robbed the bank.

Marini, from Brentwood, Long Island, was charged with robbery and endangering the welfare of a child, police said. The girl was released to family members.

A street performer dressed in gold stands completely still looks like a sitting duck for thieves.

Passer-by’s are dropping change in the impressive living statue’s collection.

However, one unkind man tries to pull a fast one on the street performer.

Either the chancer genuinely thinks the performer is a statue or he over-estimates his speed, because he does not manage to make off with the money.

The thug leans down and attempts to collect up the money that the man painted gold has earned.

The street performer deftly kicks his would-be thief in the face. 

Falling over, the man attempting to rob the other lands on his back.

He even holds out a hand to his victim, expecting him to help him up.

Now the video has gone viral online with viewers praising the street performer. 

Earlier today a truck driver and white car went viral after the driver decided to get revenge on some bad parking.

A short CCTV clip uploaded to Imgur shows the truck attempting to park in a tight space in an indoor car park.

A white car next to the space has parked at an angle, making the truck driver’s job impossible.

A mean dog owner tried to kick his oblivious dog into a lake – but was left embarrassed when karma got him instead.

In a short clip uploaded to Imgur the man, wearing an anorak, can be seen fishing by a lake.

His dog stands a little way in front of him, looking out across the water.

The man slowly lifts his right leg and taps the dog on the his back, obviously hoping to kick him into the water.
