Sunday was a silent night indeed for Mr. Robot, with a special episode that followed Elliot and Darlene’s Christmas Day hacking heist… with virtually no dialogue at all. Continuing where last week left off, Darlene picks up Elliot after he and Mr. Robot torch the Dark Army van and the body inside. He’s exhausted, so she tells him: “It’s cool, man. We don’t need to talk.” And then they don’t for the rest of the episode, as they plan and execute a daring break-in to infiltrate the Virtual Reality servers. Elliot gets Darlene a fake employee ID — as Dolores Haze, natch — and a wig, and she distracts the security guard while Elliot sneaks in and punches through a firmware update that freezes the security system for 40 minutes. They also pull a fingerprint from the guard and make a 3D printer replica of it (!) to get access to the company’s servers. Elsewhere in the episode: Elliot’s old therapist Krista prepares for a cozy holiday dinner with her boo before she’s confronted by that nasty drug dealer Fernando Vera, who breaks the episode’s silence by telling her, “It’s time we talked”; Phillip Price receives a secret message via business card and informs Elliot that their meeting is on, even without Tyrell; and Dom is ordered to ID the Dark Army soldier’s body before she gets a fresh assignment to track down “two troublemakers.” Yep, that would be Elliot and Darlene. How’d you like Mr. Robot‘s dialogue-free installment? Got predictions for the rest of the final season? Join our group chat in the comments below. The holidays are here as Mr. Robot kicks off its fourth and final season… by killing off a major character before the opening credits even roll. We pick up with Angela ranting to Phillip Price about how she wants “retribution” against Whiterose; Price tries to calm her down, but she tells him there’s nothing he can do to stop her. “I wish you hadn’t said that,” he sighs as he walks away with gritted teeth — and a pair of Dark Army goons walk up and shoot Angela in the head. (Welcome back, Mr. Robot fans!) Now it’s Price who’s pissed at Whiterose, calling her “psychotic” in a phone call, but Whiterose is unmoved: “I’m sorry for your loss.” An assistant informs her that the shipment hack will give them the clearance they need “just in time for the holidays,” and Whiterose announces she’ll happily “terminate” Elliot once the project is finalized. “I hope you enjoy your last Christmas, dear Elliot,” she laughs. We check in on Tyrell, who’s being lauded as a savior at E Corp, now that the Five/Nine hack has been reversed and the company is bouncing back. But he’s nearly catatonic, still haunted by his ordeal last season. Dom isn’t doing much better: She’s drinking heavily and crashing in her mom’s attic, pulling a pistol on a poor handyman in a fit of paranoia. Meanwhile, Elliot and Mr. Robot set up shop in Allsafe’s abandoned offices, combing through John Garcin’s social media for blackmail material. Elliot is uncharacteristically cold, though: When Mr. Robot mentions Freddy’s fate, Elliot sniffs, “He had it coming. They all do.” He wants vengeance for what happened to Angela, and is singularly focused on bringing down Whiterose, once and for all. Dom’s paranoia might not have been misplaced, either: During an awkward dinner with her mother and a woman named Janice, she thinks it’s her mom’s attempt at matchmaking, but then Janice ominously notes, “You have that interview about the Santiago case in the morning.” Yep, Janice is a Dark Army mole… and if Dom doesn’t cooperate, she’ll be “forced to do something really bad to your mother.” Darlene is still in an Angela grief spiral, screaming at friends at a party who dare to touch Angela’s things and sobbing in Angela’s bed while clutching her old ballet slippers. And Elliot is strapped down to a chair by those thugs while a mystery man — hey, it’s Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail! — cooks up a drug and loads it into a syringe. Elliot pleads for them to let him go (“I’ve hurt so many people. I have to make this right”) and threatens to spoil Whiterose’s entire operation, but it’s no use. “Goodbye, friend,” the mystery man says as he jabs the needle into Elliot’s arm. The thugs leave as a dazed Elliot collapses to the floor. His life flashes before his eyes, and his eyes flutter closed as we fade to black… but no, he’s not yet another casualty. He’s revived with something sprayed into his nostrils and awakes to see the thugs… joined by Phillip Price. “Welcome back, Mr. Alderson,” the old man says. Now this is a team-up we wouldn’t have predicted. But their luck runs out when the guard snoops around and sees they’ve used his ID to get to the servers. He calls the cops, and Darlene just finishes hacking into Cyprus National Bank before they flee, even leaving her laptop behind. Elliot sprints out the front door past the cops, with a couple of them giving chase, while Darlene calmly removes her wig and switches into workout gear so it looks like she’s just leaving the gym that’s attached to the lobby. Elliot manages to evade the cops and board a city bus, but squad cars soon pull up and block the bus’ path, forcing him to get off and sprint some more. He even gets hit by a car, but somehow limps his way towards a bridge, where he leaps off and rolls down an embankment, where Darlene is waiting with a getaway car. Whew.

Before we check in with Elliot, though, we meet sleazy lawyer Freddy Lomax, whose office holiday party is interrupted when he receives an envelope containing video of him propositioning a clearly underage girl via webcam. A burner phone rings: It’s Mr. Robot, instructing Freddy to follow his instructions if he doesn’t want that video to go to the FBI. Freddy dutifully copies all of his work emails, heads to Grand Central, loses a couple of Dark Army henchmen and boards a train… where Elliot is waiting. Freddy’s been helping Whiterose funnel money, and Elliot digs up some wire transfers in his work emails, along with the name Cyprus National Bank. Elliot also gets the name of another contact from Freddy — John Garcin — but when Freddy realizes Elliot can’t do anything to protect him from Whiterose, he pulls out a gun and shoots himself on a city street. (Boy, the body count in this episode is climbing fast, huh?)
He gets a visit from a coked-up Darlene, who is convinced she saw Angela alive on a city street, but Elliot abruptly cuts her off: “She’s f—king dead.” (He actually has a photo from Whiterose of Angela with her brains blown out, but she doesn’t want to show it to Darlene.) Elliot directs his fury at John Garcin, posing as a deliveryman and sneaking into Garcin’s apartment. The apartment door is left open, though, and the home furnishings inside still have price tags on them. It’s a set-up, Elliot realizes, as he pulls a copy of Sartre’s No Exit off of a bookshelf and sees a Garcin in the character name list: “There is no John Garcin.” Right on cue, a couple of thugs enter and pull Elliot out kicking and screaming.

MIT’s original Cheetah robot is already quite nimble on its feet, but there’s now a smaller counterpart that might put it to shame. Researchers have shown off a new Mini Cheetah that can pull off a number of slick moves, including backflips — it’s the first four-legged robot to pull off the feat, according to MIT. It can also walk upside-down Exorcist-style, pick itself up after falls and trot at a relatively brisk 5.5MPH on less-than-smooth terrain.
The small-scale Cheetah is far from perfect. It doesn’t always stick the landing, as you can see in the clip below. It’s also just a research project, you’re not likely to see this exact bot in the wild like you might with Boston Dynamics’ SpotMini. This does bode well for a future of agile automatons, though. And look at it this way: if you’re worried that robots will turn on humanity, they’ll at least have some panache while they exact their vengeance.

Billionaire Elon Musk of Tesla and SpaceX fame has revealed another facet to his eccentric nature: he likes anime. Perhaps too much so, because he may be planning to build a giant anime robot.
It began as an innocent tweet where Musk simply said he loves ‘Your Name’, a romantic fantasy drama anime with a plot that involves body-swapping teenagers. Comments flooded in, bearing questions and advice about the followers’ favorite Japanese animation titles.
It turned out Musk was not only a fan of high-school magical melodrama. He also appreciates Hayao Miyazaki’s modern classics ‘Spirited Away’ and ‘Princess Mononoke’, and, more importantly, ‘Evangelion’ – a brain-boiling series which revolves around (again) teen angst and giant fighting robot-like humanoids.
And, perhaps inspired by the commenters’ enthusiasm, he then tweeted it’s time to build one of his own.
A ‘mecha’ in anime lingo is exactly that: a giant fighting robot.
Now, with almost anybody else, a tweet like this would be safe to laugh off as a joke. Musk, however, has created such a ‘mad inventor’ flair around himself that one can’t help but think that he might just be serious. After all, he did build that “kid-sized submarine” back in July he wanted to use to rescue Thai football players from a flooded cave. That plan failed, and Musk’s loose Twitter fingers earned him a lawsuit in the aftermath, but there was a video to prove that the sub existed. No such proof has so far emerged for another of Musk’s ‘projects’ – sticking rocket engines to a Tesla car, so that must have been a joke after all. Probably.
Speaking of tweeting himself into trouble, Musk knows exactly how to do that. A recent scandal around his false August tweet about taking Tesla private for $ 420 a share not only cost him $ 20 million and the chairman’s seat, but also some of his Twitter liberty: he now has to pre-moderate his statements, including those made on social media, with Tesla. That, however, only includes things that concern the company, so unless he plans to market his mecha under the Tesla brand (like he does with surfboards and plans to do with tequila), he can brag about it all he wants.

After dropping a stunning “Parkour” video for its humanoid Atlas robot earlier today, Boston Dynamics followed up with this more subdued look at a commercial application for its technology. In a video similar to lab tests we’ve seen before, this sensor-laden Spot robot (there’s even one in its “hand” that you can see it using above, Watcher-style) took a stroll around a couple of construction sites while carrying a pack to survey human compliance work progress.
In June, president Marc Raibert said the company had 10 prototypes built already ahead of sales next year and this one looks like it’s ready to go. The video’s description indicates these will be released in the second half of 2019, so if you’d like to start doing some extra cardio now then that would be good.

Just two years ago Boston Dynamics proudly showed off a new generation of its Atlas robot that could take an untethered stroll through the woods, before advancing to balancing on one leg and even landing a backflip.
Its latest highlight reel, however, is one that should make this guy very, very afraid. Dubbed “Parkour,” it features a bipedal battery-powered robot that not only jogs, but hops over obstacles and up an uneven obstacle course with nary a bobble. The ‘bot now has enough processing power to use its legs, arms and torso to balance through the movements and power up each 40cm-high step, while using computer vision to locate the next one.
Sure, the advertisement is that such a robot could navigate through disasters to rescue squishy humans stuck in precarious situations, but we can certainly imagine alternative applications. Japan’s Softbank bought Boston Dynamics and its robots from Alphabet a little over a year ago, and likely has aspirations for the technology that reach far beyond hit YouTube videos.
