The Houston Astros activated right-handed reliever Roberto Osuna and placed starting pitcher Lance McCullers on the 10-day disabled list Sunday with right elbow discomfort.

Osuna was acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays in a trade-deadline deal last week and is coming off a 75-day MLB-imposed suspension for violation of the league's domestic violence policy.

Houston released a statement on Osuna's activation on Sunday afternoon.

McCullers pitched four scoreless innings Saturday against the Dodgers but left as he warmed up for the fifth inning.

Astros manager A.J. Hinch said he will take advantage of some upcoming days off and go with a four-man rotation through the middle of August.

McCullers returned to Houston on Sunday morning to get a more detailed examination from team doctors.

McCullers is 10-6 for the World Series champion Astros with a 3.93 ERA in 22 starts.

Astros manager A.J. Hinch met privately with the team's owner and general manager on Saturday, a day ahead of reliever Roberto Osuna being activated following a 75-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy.

Hinch discussed the matter with owner Jim Crane and GM Jeff Luhnow, but declined to go into details. The manager said Osuna will join the club on Sunday and be activated for the series finale at Dodger Stadium.

Osuna was arrested in Toronto in May and charged with assaulting his girlfriend. No details have been made public and the matter is pending in court.

MLB handed him the second-longest suspension since its domestic violence policy was enacted three years ago and Osuna did not appeal.

The Astros acquired the right-handed reliever from the Blue Jays at the trade deadline this week. The move raised eyebrows in the clubhouse and around baseball since Houston had previously stated its no-tolerance policy regarding domestic violence.

'A lot has to happen'

The team released minor leaguer Danry Vasquez last spring after surveillance video surfaced showing him assaulting a woman.

Astros starters Justin Verlander and Lance McCullers Jr. were outspoken about their disgust on Twitter at that time.

"A lot has to happen tomorrow," Hinch said, "and as a team, family and group we'll navigate it together."

Osuna was not at Dodger Stadium on Saturday. He pitched one scoreless inning for Double-A Corpus Christi on Friday, allowing one hit with one strikeout.

Hinch's first order of business will be to talk with Osuna.

"I certainly want to get to know him and his background. I've never met him, never shook his hand," the manager said. "I know a little bit of his track record. We'll get into anything that he wants to. I'm his manager now so I think it's important to get to know him and learn what makes him be the player that he can be."

Increased scrutiny

The 23-year-old right-hander is the youngest pitcher to ever record 100 saves and he can throw 95 mph.

The World Series champion Astros are known for being a close-knit team that banded together to help Houston after last year's devastating floods triggered by Hurricane Harvey.

"That's not going to change," Hinch said.

The effect Osuna's presence has on the team will be closely scrutinized.

"We are going to handle it as a group as best we can," Hinch said. "We simply don't know and we aren't going to draw any conclusions at this point. We're going to welcome him on our team and begin the process of getting to know him."

The Toronto Blue Jays traded talented but troubled closer Roberto Osuna to the Houston Astros on Monday.

The Blue Jays received right-handed pitchers Ken Giles, David Paulino and Hector Perez in exchange for Osuna, who has been serving a 75-game suspension for violating MLB's domestic violence policy after being arrested and charged with assault by Toronto police on May 8.

Osuna can return to major-league action on Sunday. His next scheduled court appearance is Wednesday in Toronto.

"This was one (deal) that made sense form a baseball perspective," Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins said on a conference call Monday. "Extremely excited about Giles, Perez and Paulino joining the organization. I think for many reasons this deal made sense and it starts with the talent we're acquiring."

Atkins was asked whether having the bad optics of Osuna returning to pitch for the Jays factored in the decision to make the move.

"We do feel a responsibility to the fans and we do feel empathy for the fans and we ultimately work for the fans," he said. "That's how we do our jobs. We are human and it is very difficult for accusations not to influence us in some way.

"Having said that, this made sense for the organization from a baseball perspective."

Astros players Justin Verlander and Lance McCullers Jr. voiced disdain for domestic abusers in March when video leaked of former Astros prospect Danry Vasquez beating his girlfriend. Vasquez was released by Houston following an arrest for the incident in 2016. KRIS-TV in Houston obtained and aired the video, which showed Vasquez, still partly in uniform, hitting his girlfriend in a stairwell at Double-A Corpus Christi's stadium.

"(Middle finger emoji) you man," Verlander tweeted. "I hope the rest of your life without baseball is horrible. You deserve all that is coming your way!"

"This is the reality of domestic violence," McCullers wrote. "It's always brutal, always sickening. We must fight for the victims, video or not. He should be in jail. If you need help, find it. People care."

The 23-year-old native of Mexico, who was recently on a rehab assignment with triple-A Buffalo as he prepared for his return to the majors, had nine saves and a 2.03 earned-run average in 15 appearances with Toronto this season prior to his suspension.

The right-hander has 104 saves in 221 appearances over three-plus seasons with Toronto. He became the youngest pitcher in MLB history to reach 100 saves in the Jays 2-1 win over Baltimore on April 10.

Giles has struggled this season with the Astros, posting 12 saves in 34 appearances with a 4.99 earned-run average. But he was effective in Houston's run to a World Series title last year, with 34 saves and a .230 ERA.

The 27-year-old native of Albuquerque, N.M., pitched one inning of a combined no-hitter as a member Philadelphia Phillies in a 7-0 win over Atlanta on Sept. 1, 2014.

Paulino missed most of the 2017 season as suspended 80 games without pay for testing positive for a performance enhancing substance. He has not pitched at the major-league level this season.

Perez has split time this season between double-A Corpus Christi and single-A Buies Creek.

The former Real Madrid star, who viewed the groundless allegations as doing severe damage to his reputation, opened legal proceedings against the outlet last week, filing a lawsuit at London’s High Court.

“It is hard to imagine a more serious allegation against any professional sportsman, let alone a sportsman of the international distinction and renown of Mr Carlos. It is, moreover, an allegation against him that is completely false and unfounded,” said Carlos’ lawyer Andy Lee.

“For his part Mr Carlos does not know and has never met the Brazilian doctor who was named in the articles as having supposedly administered performance enhancing drugs to him,” he added.

The Mail on Sunday apologized to the Brazilian icon, acknowledging that it had wrongly accused the former defender of violating doping rules. The outlet agreed to pay damages to Carlos for “the distress and embarrassment” caused by the article, claiming that the allegations had been made based on a German TV documentary.

“Our report on June 10 last year about claims made by a German TV documentary wrongly accused football legend Roberto Carlos of using banned performance-enhancing drugs, including when Brazil won the 2002 World Cup,” the outlet said in statement.

“We accept this allegation is untrue and apologize for the distress and embarrassment caused to Mr Carlos and have agreed to pay him substantial damages and costs.”

Major League Baseball has suspended Toronto Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna through Aug. 4 for violating the league's joint domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy.

MLB announced the suspension — which is retroactive to May 8 and will cover a total of 75 games — in a release on Friday. The league says Osuna has agreed not to appeal the suspension and he will participate in a confidential and comprehensive evaluation and treatment program supervised by the joint policy board of MLB and the players' association.

The 23-year-old Osuna is facing an assault charge and had been on paid administrative leave by MLB since being arrested last month.

The Blue Jays said in a statement that they "support the decision by the Commissioner's Office."

Osuna appeared in 15 games (15 1/3 innings) for Toronto this season, allowing 16 hits, five runs and one walk while earning nine saves. He has not pitched since May 6, two days before he was put on administrative leave.

He is 8-13 with a 2.87 earned-run average and 104 saves in his four-season career with the Blue Jays.

'Hopefully it all gets worked out'

"I don't have much of a reaction other than you take what MLB does and trust that and live with that and let it go through its course," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said before Friday night's road game against the Los Angeles Angels. "We knew something was coming down. Actually, it took a while. Hopefully it all gets worked out on both sides and everyone gets the help they need and everything works out fine."

Osuna's lawyer, Domenic Basile, said in court in Toronto Monday that Osuna intends to plead not guilty to the assault charge.

Osuna's case is scheduled to return to court July 9.

Blue Jays manager John Gibbons was asked before Toronto's game against the Angels in Los Angeles Friday if knowing the length of the penalty helps the team.

"I guess that helps," Gibbons said. "We've kind of moved past that anyway and made do with what we've had."

Osuna will lose about $ 2.54 million US of his $ 5.3 million salary.

Two separate investigations are underway into the leak of a photo of Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna in a holding cell after he was arrested and charged with assault on Tuesday.

On Wednesday morning, a CCTV camera image that showed the 23-year-old reclining in his cell with legs outstretched emerged in a Global News story. 

Toronto police Chief Mark Saunders told CBC Toronto the leak is "not something that I'm very proud of."

He also said he could not explain how the photo ended up online.

"I can tell you that my professional standards is actively investigating and looking into [the leak], and I'm looking for opportunities to prevent this type of behaviour to happen." Saunders said.

Chief Saunders wouldn't say what punishment the person responsible for leaking the photo could face.

"Most of the men and women of the Toronto service force understand the importance of confidentiality and privacy," he said.

"Rest assured that professional standards will do anything and everything that they can do to locate where this came from."

Toronto police Const. David Hopkinson told CBC News the professional standards unit is investigating the leak. 

Hopkinson said he didn't want to comment further and possibly jeopardize the investigation. 

"I'm not going to go into this because it's not standard. It's not something that happens all the time. It's actually quite rare," he said. Police also didn't comment on when the investigation is expected to conclude.

Police have said little about Osuna's charge and would not confirm whether it pertained to domestic assault.

Osuna was released and is due back in court at Old City Hall on June 18 and has been placed on administrative leave by Major League Baseball.

Ontario's privacy commissioner has also confirmed it is looking into "the alleged unauthorized disclosure of a CCTV image" of Osuna. 

The investigation is one of two that Information and Privacy Commissioner Brian Beamish said are being investigated Wednesday.

The other relates to the alleged unauthorized disclosure of police documents by a member of the Peel Regional Police relating to the 2016 arrest of three people over possible cocaine possession. 

The commissioner provided no other details.

Toronto Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna was arrested and charged Tuesday morning with assault, according to a police report.

Police declined to say whether it was domestic assault. Const. Jenifferjit Sidhu said the charge is for one count of assault, and provided no further details.

The 23-year-old right-handed pitcher was released and is scheduled to appear in court on June 18. Osuna was placed on administrative leave by Major League Baseball.

"We are aware of the incident involving Roberto and fully support the decision by the Commissioner's Office to place him on administrative leave," the Blue Jays said in a news release. "We are taking the matter extremely seriously, as the type of conduct associated with this incident is not reflective of our values as an organization. As this remains an ongoing investigation by Toronto Police, the club will not comment further on the matter."

'Zero tolerance'

Osuna is in his fourth MLB season, all with the Blue Jays. The native of Juan Jose Rios, Mexico, has nine saves in 15 appearances this season with a 2.93 earned-run average and 13 strikeouts.

"Hopefully there's nothing there," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said Tuesday. "I love the kid not because of what he's done for us on the field but because of who he is and my relationship with him over the years. But really in society in general there's got to be zero tolerance."

"You've got to protect the vulnerable and those who can't protect themselves a lot. Hopefully when it's all said and done he's back with us and it's all behind him and things turn out fine."

Gibbons said it remains to be seen who will take over the closer role. The Blue Jays recalled right-hander Jake Petricka from triple-A Buffalo to take Osuna's spot on the roster.

"We'll see how the games develop," he said. "We got a few guys who can do it. [Tyler] Clippard, [Ryan] Tepera can do it, [Seung Hwan] Oh can do it. Ax [John Axford] can even do it. Still feel pretty good about what's down there."

The Blue Jays start a six-game homestand Tuesday night against Seattle. The team had planned a giveaway on Osuna T-Shirts to the first 15,000 fans attending Thursday's series finale against the Mariners. Instead, the promotion will feature Yangervis Solarte T-shirts.

Suspension without charges possible

Under the joint policy agreed upon by Major League Baseball and the players' union in 2015 on domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse, commissioner Rob Manfred has the power to suspend players even without criminal charges.

"MLB takes all allegations of this nature very seriously," Major League Baseball said in a statement. "We are investigating the circumstances in accordance with the Joint MLB-MLBPA Domestic Violence Policy."

Relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman was the first player to be disciplined under the terms of the policy when the league suspended him for the first 30 games of the 2016 season for an alleged incident on Dec. 7, 2015. Days later, shortstop Jose Reyes — a former Blue Jays shortstop — was suspended for the first 51 games of the 2016 season for an alleged incident while a member of the Colorado Rockies.

New York Mets closer Jeurys Familia was suspended for the first 15 games of the 2017 season; charges against Familia and Reyes were dropped, while prosecutors did not file criminal charges against Chapman.

The Brazil striker this week put pen to paper on an improved contract which will keep him at Anfield until 2023.

But with the club involved in negotiations to secure both his strike partners Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah on similarly improved terms, Klopp believes the deal is a firm statement of intent.

But while those sorts of numbers have tended to attract unwanted attention from bigger European clubs – Philippe Coutinho left for Barcelona in January – Klopp now feels confident he can hang on to his best performers.

“That’s becoming rare because if you are not Barcelona or not Real Madrid then there’s usually another club somewhere you can go to.

“It’s really good news for us. He’s absolutely a big factor in our future and perfect news.”

Mohamed Salah is another Reds star the club will face a tough battle to keep hold of in the summer.

Real Madrid are thought to have made the Egypt international their priority transfer target but Liverpool have no intention of selling their prized asset.

The Sun claim Liverpool are ready to offer Salah £185,000-a-week in order to keep him at Anfield – double his current £90,000-a-week wages.

One player who does look to have escaped their grasp though is midfielder Emre Can.

The German is out of contract at the end of the season and appears to be closing in on a move to Juventus.

Can arrived in Liverpool in 2014 from Bayer Leverkusen, having previously won the Bundesliga title with Bayern Munich in 2013.

The Irishman said he was ready to “throw a party” when he left the club to join Aston Villa in 2011, such was his despise for then boss Roberto Mancini.

“Roberto Mancini saw the world differently to Shay Given, that’s for sure. He fell out with everyone. And when I say everyone, I mean everyone.

“The players, the back-up staff, the physios, the kitman, the press officers, the canteen workers, the car park lads, the lot.

“He probably even swung a punch or two at his own reflection for looking at him funny.”
