After a series of skirmishes that left at least one guard dead and several wounded, the prisoners used a bayonet to punch a hole in the prison walls. Instead of heading directly to the island’s tiny harbor for a quick getaway, the 14 escapees made a perilous detour to release their hero.

Makhanda, the warrior-prophet who had led a force of some 6,000 Xhosa in a disastrous attack on the British frontier settlement of Grahamstown a year earlier, in 1819, was held in a separate building, where he was treated with great respect. The British recognized his importance, says Julia C. Wells, author of The Return of Makhanda: Exploring the Legend. “[They] feared he’d organize a revolt if allowed to mix with the other prisoners.”

When Makhanda was sent to Robben Island, the Xhosa were outraged.

As it turned out, his mere presence was enough. Like anti-apartheid revolutionaries Walter Sisulu and Nelson Mandela (also both Xhosa), Makhanda had not initially rejected the White presence in South Africa; instead, he had made a concerted effort to understand and participate in European culture. But his role as a mediator between Black and White was stopped in its tracks by a particularly ruthless British cattle raid — one that created a powerful and determined adversary.

Little is known about the early years of Makhanda (also spelled Makana). He was probably born around 1770, when European settlers first reached the Eastern Cape, and he may have grown up on a White-owned farm. When Makhanda reached adulthood, Wells believes he moved eastward to live among his own people. It was most likely during this time that he became an influential adviser to Chief Ndlambe, who was widely recognized as the most anti-British chief in the region.

Around 1815, says Wells, Makhanda began making regular visits to Grahamstown (officially, a no-Blacks zone) to “spend long hours discussing everything — life, religion, politics — with the local chaplain.” Then came the Brereton Raid, which saw the British-led rustlers steal some 20,000 cattle. It left the Xhosa with an impossible choice: retaliation or starvation. As 19th-century historian George McCall Theal noted, “Makana, who up to that time had exerted himself to cultivate friendly relations with the white man, now spoke of nothing but war.”

His radicalization came during the heart of the Frontier Wars, which consisted of seven conflicts that began in 1779 and ended in 1878. The first two were fought by the Dutch and the rest by the British after they seized control of the Cape in 1795.

Makhanda

In the months that followed Brereton, Makhanda’s messengers were “everywhere in Kaffirland, calling upon all true Xhosas to take part in the strife against the Europeans … in thrilling language promising victory,” writes Theal. Although Makhanda is remembered mostly for the Battle of Grahamstown, the first phase of the Fifth Frontier War was a series of guerrilla raids on Boer farmhouses, which weakened the British rural support base and allowed the Xhosa to stock up on guns.

The attack on Grahamstown remained a surprise until the morning of April 22, 1820, when British commanding officer Lt. Col. Thomas Willshire stumbled upon 5,000 Xhosa warriors across the river from the settlement. After being discovered, the Xhosa waited a couple of hours before attacking — “an error in retrospect,” says Wells, as it gave the British time to ready their latest party trick: six newly acquired cannons.

The main Xhosa offensive took place on open ground and lasted barely an hour: Spears and a smattering of rifles were no match for heavy artillery, and at least 1,000 warriors died (compared with six British casualties). Fighting at the barracks lasted a little longer, but the Xhosa soon retreated.

The British sat tight for the next few months before launching an invasion. After a particularly bitter spell of fighting, Makhanda surrendered himself, assuming he would be held hostage until the conclusion of peace negotiations, which was the custom of his people. Instead, he was sent to Robben Island off Cape Town, which had been used as a lockup for political prisoners since the end of the 17th century, as a POW. (Mandela served 18 years there; Sisulu, 25 years.) “When he was sent to Robben Island, the Xhosa were outraged,” says Wells.

Which brings us back to the morning prison break on Aug. 9, 1820. Once they’d freed Makhanda, the escapees stole three boats from the island’s whaling station and embarked on the 6-mile journey to the mainland. Two boats capsized near shore, but more than half of the men made it onto dry land, where all were eventually recaptured.

The three prisoners who had killed guards during the escape were hanged; the others were returned to Robben Island. According to the British, Makhanda drowned. The Xhosa maintain that he was shot on the beach and his body dumped in the water. Conveniently, no autopsy was performed, and there is no record of his burial.

Over the years, the British account of Makhanda’s life and the Battle of Grahamstown “took on a spiritual nature,” says Wells. Makhanda telling his warriors that bullets would “turn into water” suited the British agenda of “belittling the primitive, superstitious culture.” As the missionary Thomas Pringle noted in 1835, “It is melancholy to reflect how valuable an instrument for promoting the civilization of the Caffer [Kaffir] tribes was apparently lost by the nefarious treatment and indirect destruction of that extraordinary barbarian.”

Finally, the other side of the story is being given credence. Although the widely held belief that the escape took place on Christmas Day has been recognized as poetic license, an Xhosa saying still holds currency: It likens “waiting for the return of Makhanda” to hoping for the impossible.

“We are happy, even if qualifying is logical given the quality of the players I have.”

Giroud said he was delighted to have avoided the tension of the playoffs.

“We’re all relieved tonight to have ended the campaign with automatic qualification,” the Arsenal forward said.

“We chased this game and it wasn’t easy because they were strong and efficient in attack until the final whistle and we had to roll up our sleeves.”

The Dutch, World Cup finalists in South Africa in 2010 and semi-finalists four years later, bowed to the inevitable as they failed to achieve the unlikely 7-0 scoreline over Sweden they needed to salvage a wretched qualifying effort.

Arjen Robben scored twice in a 2-0 win over the Swedes in Amsterdam and said afterwards he was retiring from international football.

The Swiss can consider themselves unlucky after winning all nine previous qualifiers but must now overcome a two-legged play-off in November to earn a fourth straight World Cup appearance.

Ronaldo, who was injured for the opening qualifying defeat in Basel, returned to the Portuguese line-up after coming off the bench to notch the opening goal in a lacklustre 2-0 win in Andorra on Saturday.

US pop star Madonna was among the crowd at the Estadio da Luz which erupted when Djourou inadvertently bundled in a dangerous cross from Eliseu four minutes before the break under heavy pressure from Joao Mario.

Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva then exchanged passes with former Monaco team-mate Joao Moutinho, threading through the return pass for an unmarked Andre Silva to poke in at the far post.

In Paris, Deschamps paired Atletico Madrid striker Griezmann with Giroud’s aerial threat, and Griezmann eased nerves in the 27th minute as he opened the scoring with a confident low finish from Blaise Matuidi’s deft pass.

Six minutes later, Griezmann intercepted a weak pass out of the Belarus defence and fed Giroud, who shrugged off two defenders to bundle in his 28th international goal.

But the French defence was caught napping, allowing Belarus to reduce the gap when the lively Anton Saroka swept past Hugo Lloris a minute before half-time.

Saroka gave France another jolt when he shot just wide in the 64th minute, but he was narrowly offside.

Deschamps brought on Paris Saint-Germain starlet Kylian Mbappe in the second half to inject pace and fresh ideas, but with the seconds ticking down to the final whistle, it was Saroka again who slid a shot just wide from close range.

NETHERLANDS WIN, STILL MAKE SHOCK CUP EXIT

Arjen Robben ensured that the Netherlands bowed out of World Cup qualification in some style Tuesday, scoring both goals as the Dutch beat Sweden 2-0 before then announcing his retirement from international football. The winning margin at the Amsterdam Arena was nowhere near enough for the Netherlands, which had to beat Sweden by seven goals to move into second place in Group A.

The Swedes, who looked content to defend throughout the match, finished second and go into a playoff for the World Cup in Russia next year. France beat Belarus 2-1 to seal top spot in the group and automatic qualification. If other players had emulated Robben’s finishing prowess, the Dutch would have been much closer to the unlikely score they needed.

Defender Kenny Tete, midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum both squandered good chances in the first half and Ryan Babel came close with a long-range free kick. It was 33-year-old Robben’s 96th and final international for the Netherlands and he stamped his authority all over the match, taking his tally of goals to 37, level with Dennis Bergkamp.

He announced his retirement from the national team after the game. Robben gave the Netherlands the lead when he converted – though only just – a 16th minute penalty with a fluffed Panenka chip.

There was no sign of a mis-hit for his second goal, a powerful first-time shot from just outside the penalty area that fizzed past Sweden goalkeeper Robin Olsen and into the top corner in the 40th minute.

As the final whistle sounded, the crowd rose to give Robben a standing ovation, chanting, “Arjen, thanks” in Dutch.

RONALDO’S PORTUGAL GOES THROUGH OVER SWISS

European champion Portugal will get a chance to keep its momentum going after qualifying for next year’s World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Switzerland on Tuesday.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s team got the win it needed in the showdown against the Swiss at a packed Stadium of Light.

Both teams finished with 27 points, but Portugal had a better goal difference. Switzerland, which had led Group B since the first round, will have to go through a playoff to try to make it to the tournament in Russia. The Swiss arrived with a three-point lead over Euro 2016 winner Portugal and needed at least a draw to earn the automatic World Cup berth. An own-goal by Swiss defender Johan Djourou before halftime and a goal by forward by Andre Silva early in the second half were enough to give Portugal its ninth straight victory since an opening 2-0 loss to the Swiss in Basel last year.

Switzerland had won all of its nine qualifiers until Tuesday’s setback. Portugal was in control but hadn’t been able to create many scoring chances until Djourou found his own net while trying to clear a cross from the left by Eliseu in the 41st minute. The ball touched Djourou’s right foot after getting past a defender and then Switzerland goalkeeper Yann Sommer. Silva added to the lead in the 57th with a shot into the open net after picking up a cross from the right by Bernardo Silva.

It was only the second time Ronaldo failed to score in this qualifying campaign. The Real Madrid star ended with 15 goals, one less than Poland striker Robert Lewandowski, who scored a record-setting 16th on Sunday.

Leckie opened the scoring in the 16th minute when he received the ball wide on the right, dribbled into the box, beat a defender and curled a left-footed strike past Bernd Leno in the Leverkusen goal and into the top corner of the net.

Just eight minutes later Saloman Kalou doubled the lead for Hertha, who took their 2-0 lead into halftime.

Julian Brandt pulled a goal back late for the visitors in the 84th minute but Hertha held on for the win and moved to eighth on the ladder, five points behind early leaders Borussia Dortmund.

Dortmund enjoyed a 3-0 win of their own with Shinji Kagawa scoring in the first half before Pierre Aubameyang and Christian Pulisic added second half goals.

Dortmund have now gone five straight games without conceding a goal.

Elsewhere Hoffenheim came back from 2-0 down to beat Mainz, with Marc Uth scoring a 90th minute winner, Freiberg drew 1-1 with Hannover and Eintracht Frankfurt kept Cologne’s miserable start to the season going with a 1-0 win. That result leaves Cologne rooted to the bottom of the ladder as the only side with zero points.
