Warning: The following contains spoilers for Wednesday’s Chicago Fire. Proceed at your own risk!

Chicago Fire‘s return on Wednesday was a tough one for various ‘shipper factions, with not one but two pairings taking a hit.

First, Casey and Brett had a much-needed talk about the abrupt ending to their make-out session. “My feelings for you, they’re real, Sylvie, regardless of Gabby,” Casey reassured the blonde, who quickly retorted, “There is no ‘regardless of Gabby.’ That’s the point.”

Then to make things very clear, Brett added, “What happened between us, it can’t happen again. Ever.” And although she doesn’t want to lose Casey’s friendship, Brett requested that he give her “a little space right now,” because she “can’t go right back to the way things were” before they locked lips.

Later, Casey confessed to Severide that he hasn’t had any contact with or really thought about his ex-wife for months. “Sylvie’s been the only one on my mind,” he admitted. But she wants space, and the strength of his feelings is exactly why he needs to back off. “Maybe it’s for the best,” Casey concluded.

Elsewhere, Severide discovered that people were gossiping about Stella’s quick climb up the CFD ladder and how sleeping with a connected firefighter probably isn’t hurting her. So like his pal, Severide decided to give Stella her space instead of helping her study for the lieutenant’s exam like he promised. When Severide offered his girlfriend a vague excuse rather than explaining the situation, Stella noted his “weird” behavior to Brett.

Below, showrunner Derek Haas previews the new characters who will be thwarting Brett and Casey’s potential romance, and reveals how worried Severide and Stella fans should be.

TVLINE | Casey says he’s going to give Brett her space — or at least that’s what he tells Severide. How steadfast will he be in that? Is he actually going to follow through with that, or is he going to maybe fight for Brett?
There are going to be some more obstacles thrown at that relationship in the terms of some new characters arriving in the next episode. There’s a look on Casey’s face that you’ll know when you see it in Episode 4. I thought Jesse Spencer did a very good job of conveying a lot with just a look… This is not going to be smooth sailing for a while for either of them.

TVLINE | Are these new characters new love interests?
They’re, I would say, potential roadblocks to a Brett/Casey relationship.

TVLINE | Brett is really adamant about the fact that Gabby’s always going to be an issue, but Casey says he actually hasn’t really thought about her lately. So is that something that they can reconcile?
Well, I don’t know. Honestly, I can tell you the genesis of that, and where I felt like it was a very honest conversation is that, on our show, we try our damnedest as writers to acknowledge and to honor the history of the show. That’s why we’ll bring up characters that haven’t been around for seven seasons, like when Severide went and got the door off the ambulance to honor the memory of Shay. And with Gabby, the audience watched six years of this relationship between Casey and Gabby, and then she came back last season — at this time, actually — and they slept together again. So this isn’t something you can just shrug off, and Brett knew Gabby really well. So when Casey says, “Well, regardless of Gabby,” and Brett says, “There is no ‘regardless of Gabby,’” that, to me, felt really honest and how that would happen in real life.

TVLINE | But the fact that he says that he hasn’t really been thinking about Gabby lately, does that signify that he’s moved on? Has he gotten some closure in the relationship?
Well, he might think so, but I’m not sure that’s true.

TVLINE | And it doesn’t seem like Brett would believe it. They do not seem to be on the same page.
No. That’s a very good description.

Chicago Fire SpoilersTVLINE | Severide is keeping his distance from Stella because he learns what people are saying about her and the potential job promotion. How much of a toll is that going to take on their relationship?
It’s going to get bad, because Severide can be frustrating because he doesn’t always express what’s on his mind. [Laughs] And sometimes, he gets these ideas of how to handle things that he thinks are best and doesn’t realize he’s doing damage. But in his mind, he’s doing the right thing, and he wants Stella to achieve her dreams on her terms and doesn’t want anyone to think there was any sort of favoritism or shortcut for her. So he thinks he’s doing the right thing, but will that be interpreted correctly? Probably not.

Nothing could’ve prepared the remaining Amazing Race teams for this.

Wednesday’s two-hour showdown turned up the heat like never before, introducing the series’ first-ever mega leg, which kept teams on their toes with double the detours, roadblocks and distance. While everyone had his or her limits pushed to the max on this brutal Indian adventure, not one, but two Yields were used, launching some teams to the top and devastating another. Which duos got blood on their hands, and who ultimately was eliminated? Let’s take it from the top.

AND THEY’RE OFF | The teams’ next destination: Hyderabad, India. Hung and Chee tell us they’re done helping DeAngelo and Gary, but the footballers are still banking on the security of the alliance. Meanwhile, Eswar and Aparna, who were born in India before moving to the United States as children, are feeling pretty confident about possibly having the advantage on this one. The brother/sister combo find their clue first and learn they must smog-test three rickshaws before moving on. Not only must teams flag the rickshaws off the street, but they must also enter the vehicle’s details and test its emissions in hopes of getting approval from a smog technician.

DETOUR | Eswar and Aparna finish first and must then choose between delivering food orders or cracking a number puzzle. Since the siblings are both software engineers, they choose numbers, and are followed by Will and James, and the footballers. “This challenge was meant for us,” says Aparna, but is she speaking too soon?

On their way to the detour, Riley and Maddison vent their frustration about DeAngelo. “There’s been a lot of mutual help in our alliance with Chee, Hung and the boyfriends. Whereas with DeAngelo, there’s been a lot of take, take, take… they’ve almost been withholding information that could potentially help us.” Like Chee and Hung, these two seem over it, and refuse to help the footballers going forward.

As the volleyballers make their way to the detour, the footballers finish up and… how in holy hell are Kaylynn and Haley lost again! How is it possible that every. single. taxi driver they snag, regardless of what country they’re in, has no idea where to go? It’s been a rough Race for these two.

The boyfriends crack the code first and retrieve the next clue. At the next marker, teams have the option to use their Yields, and the guys pull the trigger on the sisters, who are still aimlessly driving in circles somewhere. (Was this a waste of a Yield? Why not pull the trigger on a bigger threat like, say, the footballers?)

Amazing Race Season 32 Episode 9 AparnaROADBLOCK | Teams must use an augmented reality interface to travel through a digital world and find three distinctive turbans. Then, they must find real men who are wearing the same headdresses. Eswar and Aparna and Gary and DeAngelo begin the roadblock, while the Blonde Bandits join Hung and Chee (who change detours) on the food-delivery task.

The two pairs of athletes destroy the roadblock and are off, but Hung and Chee make their deliveries and catch up to the pack. The first hour ends with the sisters finding out about their 20-minute delay, and since it’s a mega leg, we’re rolling right on through to: another detour!

DETOUR | This clue cannot be any more vague: “This or That.” Okaaay. For “This,” racers must push a cart of bracelets to a nearby store, and find the same set that a bride is wearing.

Eswar and Aparna select “That,” which requires teams to make molds of dentures, and then polish another pair to fit into a patient’s mouth. (Real talk: This is all kinds of gross, and I’d be OUT of there, ASAP!) While Chee and Hung bite down on “That,” the footballers and the boyfriends continue their search for needles in a haystack.

Riley and Maddison pull ahead, arriving at a palace where they hop a horse and carriage with some local socialites. At the leg’s second Yield op, they target Kaylynn and Haley, hoping to give their struggling alliance members, Hung and Chee, extra time.

ROADBLOCK | Teams must recreate place settings — including a fancy, folded napkin — on the palace’s 108-foot-long dining table. The items must be arranged down to the centimeter in order to pass the task. The volleyballers and the boyfriends decide not to reveal the ruler tip to Gary. “Now is when the Final 3 alliance with the beards, and Hung and Chee is going to start coming more towards the front,” says James. “The Mine 5, as of today, is officially dead.”

The sisters finally finish their dentures, and on the way out, one tells the camera, “If someone else Yields us, I’ll f–king slaughter them!” Welp…

PIT STOP | Riley and Maddison are the first to finish this super-ultra-mega-leg and land on Phil’s mat, winning a trip for two on a seven-day Caribbean cruise! Will and James clock in second, while Gary and DeAngelo place third. Despite their streak of luck this season, it has, indeed, run out: Kaylynn and Haley arrive last, and are eliminated from the race.

The sisters are finally gone! Will you miss them? And what are your thoughts on Gary and DeAngelo? Sound off in the Comments below!

How AI knocks down roadblocks for the auto insurance market https://briefnews.eu/how-ai-knocks-down-roadblocks-for-the-auto-insurance-market/ https://briefnews.eu/how-ai-knocks-down-roadblocks-for-the-auto-insurance-market/#respond Sun, 04 Jun 2017 01:09:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-ai-knocks-down-roadblocks-for-the-auto-insurance-market/

The insurance industry is a catch-22.

On one hand, it is a customer-facing landscape, and there is marginal room for error due to the scope of the business. On the other, a vast amount of customer data, usually inputted manually by humans, must be accounted for and analyzed. According to Experian, when data is entered manually, incomplete or missing data makes up 55% of errors, and another 32% accounts for typos — both mistakes that are easy to miss.

The claims handling process defines the relationship between the insurer and the insured, but is a major operational hurdle if managed incorrectly. And so, insurance agents are faced with a dilemma. How can they transmit data in the shortest amount of time with the highest rate of accuracy? Taken a step further, how can they correctly verify claims, including fraudulent ones, under the same pressures?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is emerging as an effective way to both speed up the claims verification process and improve data accuracy.

Moving past the inaccuracies

In a survey from accounting firm EY, global consumers said they trust the insurance industry less than banking, supermarkets, car manufacturing and online shopping. Much of this distrust stems from claim inaccuracies, which are difficult to avoid when data is input manually. AI technology solves this by reducing the amount of manual input.

Despite advances in technology, many claims still require human-driven tasks, like matching customer information in numerous databases. Insurance organizations that implement AI to take over the process can match this information in half the time. By automating step one, insurance agents can move on to more customer-oriented tasks, like personalizing the customer experience based on the situation. It’s not just incorrectly typing information that causes inaccuracies, either. Insurance agents struggle with outdated claim systems and poor data quality, factors that make it difficult to properly manage claims. AI technology bypasses these systems to help increase overall accuracy.

Using AI to recommend claims payouts

Claims cycle time is the leading indicator of customer satisfaction, according to a recent J.D. Power & Associates property claims satisfaction study. The study found the average claims cycle can take as little as eleven days, but there’s no reason this cycle can’t be cut further.

Part of the claims cycle is deciding whether or not to actually pay the claim, and this can be time consuming. By integrating AI technology, insurance companies can use cognitive analysis to quickly recommend the appropriate payout. First, AI mines the information and auto-validates the policy. Then, using machine learning models, it makes decisions on the claim and chooses whether to automatically transmit data into the system for payment. AI has the ability to analyze structured data (i.e., online databases) and unstructured data, like handwritten forms, letters and certificates, to make a cohesive recommendation. Less than 30% of insurance customers globally report having positive customer experiences – AI technology may be the difference between a good customer experience or a bad one.

Catching fraudulence in real-time, or earlier

One of the biggest sources of frustration for insurance agents is identifying fraudulent claims. Each year, fraud steals $ 80 billion a year across all lines of insurance and is considered a crime in 48 U.S. states. Insurance organizations are under fire to catch fraudulent claims, but it’s easy to be outsmarted by fraud experts.

Using AI technology, insurance agents can supplement their own human intelligence with auto-validation, ensuring each policy is comprehensively reviewed. AI matches information from the claim to the policy and checks for red flags alongside the agent, automatically and in a fraction of the time. It can even use its cognitive analysis capabilities to identify the insurance claims most likely to be fraudulent, providing insight on where insurance agents should pay extra attention in the future. Pairing artificial and human intelligence is the most efficient way to prevent fraud, saving insurance organizations money, time and peace of mind.

Insurance companies are adopting AI technology at an exponential pace. Around 62% of enterprises expect to use AI technologies by 2018, and those investing anticipate a 39% revenue rise by 2020. These statistics forecast a major digital shift in the overall workforce, one in which the insurance industry will play a vital part.

Insurance organizations who have already implemented an AI strategy are a seeing return on their investment – new insurer Lemonade reports it paid one claim in three seconds thanks to its smart AI devices. In the future, insurance organizations who use AI tech will have the competitive edge. If AI helps increase overall speed and accuracy, as well as verification of fraudulent claims, customer satisfaction is bound to increase as well – and ultimately, this is the driving factor for industry success.

Although some claim AI will displace jobs, it will more likely augment them. In such an information-dense, high-pressure environment, AI technology takes care of repetitive business processes, minimizing the pressure on human agents and up-leveling them to tasks worthy of human intelligence, like providing top-notch customer service. As Tony Stark wears the Iron Man suit to increase his human capabilities, AI serves as the insurance agent’s body armor. It allows them to do what they couldn’t before due to time and manpower, with much more efficiency.

Google’s “Project Treble” solves one of Android’s many update roadblocks https://briefnews.eu/googles-project-treble-solves-one-of-androids-many-update-roadblocks/ https://briefnews.eu/googles-project-treble-solves-one-of-androids-many-update-roadblocks/#respond Fri, 12 May 2017 23:44:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/googles-project-treble-solves-one-of-androids-many-update-roadblocks/

Since time immemorial, the Android ecosystem has made quickly updating an operating system across devices seem like an impossible task. Google releases a new version of Android, and while Nexus and Pixel devices get updated, other Android OEMs mostly shrug their shoulders and go about their business. If users are lucky, they might get an OS update six months down the line, at which point Google has already moved on to an even newer version of Android.

Ahead of Google I/O, Google has just dropped a bombshell of a blog post that promises, for real this time, that it is finally doing something about Android’s update problems. “Project Treble” is a plan to modularize the Android OS, separating the OS framework code from “vendor specific” hardware code. In theory, this change would allow for a new Android update to be flashed on a device without any involvement from the silicon vendor. Google calls it “the biggest change to the low-level system architecture of Android to date,” and it’s already live on the Google Pixel’s Android O Developer Preview.
