According to a CNN report citing a source who has reviewed the full transcript of the audio recording translated from Arabic, a man, identified as Maher Abdulaziz Mutreb, a former Saudi diplomat and intelligence official, made at least three phone calls to someone who was apparently a superior.

“Tell yours, the thing is done, it’s done,” Mutreb allegedly said as Khashoggi drew his last breath at the hands of a 15-men hit team.

It’s unclear from the transcript who was on the other end of the line. According to the CNN source, it is believed that Mutreb was updating Saud al-Qahtani, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s former communications chief.

Al-Qahtani was fired from his post as the kingdom’s royal court adviser as Riyadh was facing the fallout from Khashoggi’s killing, which has strained relations with its allies in the West.

The transcript cited by CNN also contains the last words ever uttered by the slain journalist and a chilling description of his dismembering.

“I can’t breathe,” Khashoggi cried. The plea was followed by muffled noises and several voices talking overhead, but nothing more could be discerned, according to the source.

The transcript then meticulously describes the sounds that followed.

“Scream. Scream. Gasping, Saw. Cutting,” it reads, only confirming the previous reports that the journalist was suffocated and then cut into pieces.

One of the two hitmen identified in the transcript, Dr. Salah Muhammad al-Tubaiqi, is cited as advising other members of the team to put earphones on “or listen to music like me” to dull the disconcerting bone saw noises.

Saudi officials denied that any calls were placed during what they earlier described as a rogue operation.

“The relevant Saudi security officials have reviewed the transcript and tape materials through Turkish security channels and nowhere in them is there any reference or indication of a call being made,” an unnamed Saudi official told CNN.

The chilling details of Khashoggi’s murder on October 2, including his last moments, have been leaked to the media in the past. In November, the Turkish Daily Sabah newspaper reported that it took the killers about seven minutes to choke the journalist to death with a plastic bag placed over his head. The journalist pled in vain with the attackers to take the bag off, saying he was short of breath and claustrophobic.

The newspaper also reported that traces of acid were found in the drains in the Saudi consulate, prompting the investigators to suggest that Khashoggi’s body was dissolved and poured down the drains.

Meanwhile, pressure is mounting for US President Donald Trump to place blame bin Salman for the killing, which he has so far been reluctant to do, defying his own intelligence service. Following a secret briefing by CIA Director Gina Haspel, several senators said they were confident that the Crown Prince, otherwise known as MBS, ordered the killing.

“It is zero chance, zero, that this happened in such an organized fashion without the [Saudi] crown prince,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) said, while Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tennessee) said that he had “zero question” that the heir apparent was fully aware of the plot.

Riyadh denies that bin Salman had any prior knowledge of the murder. Five members of the hit squad are facing the death sentence in Saudi Arabia, while several senior officials, including Al-Qahtani, have been fired.

Anti-war push or regime change in Riyadh: Analysts question motive of US Senate’s Yemen resolution https://briefnews.eu/anti-war-push-or-regime-change-in-riyadh-analysts-question-motive-of-us-senates-yemen-resolution/ https://briefnews.eu/anti-war-push-or-regime-change-in-riyadh-analysts-question-motive-of-us-senates-yemen-resolution/#respond Thu, 29 Nov 2018 16:01:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/anti-war-push-or-regime-change-in-riyadh-analysts-question-motive-of-us-senates-yemen-resolution/

A Senate resolution that would end US support for the Saudi-led invasion of Yemen may be using humanitarian concerns as a pretext to dethrone Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, analysts say.

A bipartisan proposal to block any further US military assistance to the Saudi-led coalition waging war in Yemen is one step closer to being adopted, after the Senate voted 63-37 on Wednesday to allow a floor vote on the resolution.

The legislation’s early successes have been interpreted as a kick in the teeth to US President Donald Trump’s unapologetic support for Riyadh, but some have questioned the timing of the proposal – and whether it will have any long-term effect on Washington’s deep-rooted ties to the Kingdom.

Long overdue?

The horrific war in Yemen has been raging for three years, so why is it only now that lawmakers are sharing heartbreaking photographs of starving Yemeni children on the Senate floor?

Backed by US military hardware and logistics, the Saudi-led campaign in Yemen has resulted in a “tremendous famine, the worst outbreak of cholera in modern history, and none of that seemed to move the elected officials in this country enough to do anything about it,” Medea Benjamin, cofounder of the anti-war group Code Pink, told RT.

Initially unmoved by the suffering of millions of Yemeni children, it appears that it was the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi – “someone who was known to people in the elite circles in Washington, DC” – that sparked the Senate’s indignation, Benjamin said. She added that until recently, the media has kept Americans in the dark about what is happening in Yemen, much to the delight of the “strong pro-war lobby.”

However, Khashoggi’s brutal killing at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul has developed into a “major scandal” that endangers the US’ “multi-billion dollar arms sales with Saudi Arabia,” Colin Cavell, associate professor of political science at Bluefield State College, said.

“Saudi Arabia, Britain and America are actually working together [in Yemen], in terms of weapons,” Reza Kazim, a researcher at Islamic Human Rights Commission, noted. As such, speculation that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (known colloquially as ‘MBS’) may have ordered Khashoggi’s murder is fueling concern in Washington that the current Saudi leadership is bad for business.

Pushing MBS out?

The resolution’s real aim is not to axe Washington’s ties with Saudi Arabia, but to push MBS out, and replace him with a “more pliable” Saudi royal, Cavell told RT. “The relationship will continue because Saudi Arabia has nowhere else to turn.”

Some believe the Khashoggi scandal has created a need within the Kingdom to find a new leader whose image hasn’t been tainted by allegations of cold-blooded murder and war crimes.

‘Wheels in motion to replace MBS with someone compatible with West,’ ex-Pentagon analyst tells RT

MBS has made more enemies than friends among the Saudi royals, and has “upset” the country’s leadership, Michael Maloof, former senior security policy adviser in the Pentagon, told RT earlier in November. According to the analyst, there is a simmering rebellion against the young Crown Prince in the House of Saud.

“The wheels are already in motion to try and replace MBS with someone more compatible with the West.”

Whatever the resolution’s potential ulterior motives, it’s still far from clear if the legislation will ultimately be adopted.

“How long is this [issue] going to stay in the public mind?” Cavell asked. “Will Americans demand accountability, or will people forget about it in a month or so?”

Trump slammed after thanking Riyadh for low oil prices amid Khashoggi drama https://briefnews.eu/trump-slammed-after-thanking-riyadh-for-low-oil-prices-amid-khashoggi-drama/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-slammed-after-thanking-riyadh-for-low-oil-prices-amid-khashoggi-drama/#respond Thu, 22 Nov 2018 00:06:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trump-slammed-after-thanking-riyadh-for-low-oil-prices-amid-khashoggi-drama/

US President Donald Trump has again sparked massive backlash from the internet, this time praising Saudi Arabia for helping to lower global oil prices amid the fallout from the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

“Thank you to Saudi Arabia, but let’s go lower!” the US president tweeted out on Wednesday, praising the fact that oil prices were dropping.

It didn’t take the Twitterati long to get their typing fingers ready and hammer away at their keyboards.

“REAL Presidents do not do PR for murderous regimes,” one #Resistance activist wrote, referring to the popular belief that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman ordered the killing of Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey last month.

A comedy writer questioned whether oil prices were cut using a bone saw, the same gruesome tool that was reportedly used to dismember Khashoggi’s body, according to anonymous Turkish sources.

One activist implied that Trump’s loyalty to Saudi Arabia is reminiscent of the behavior of a “mob boss.”

In a tweet aimed directly at Trump, one user wrote: “Oh, ok I can fill up for a buck cheaper, but the Saudi’s can silence free speech? Big deal.” His comment was an apparent reference to the fact that Khashoggi was seemingly killed for being an outspoken critic of the Saudi government.

Then there was this picture, which speaks a thousand words.

Some members of Congress are also angry about Trump declining to cut ties with Saudi Arabia over Khashoggi’s death, including several Republicans.

“It is a delicate situation when we have a long-term ally that we’ve had for decades, but we have a crown prince that I believe ordered the killing of a journalist,” Senator Bob Corker (R-Tennessee) told Chattanooga TV station WTVC while in his home state. “We don’t have a smoking gun. Everything points to the fact that he knew about it and directed it.”

In a much-criticized statement on Tuesday, Trump had said that “it could very well be that the Crown Prince had knowledge of this tragic event – maybe he did and maybe he didn’t,” adding that the public may never know all the facts surrounding Khashoggi’s death.

  • The US received a payment of $ 100 million from Saudi Arabia on the same day that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Riyadh to meet with Saudi leaders on the investigation into journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s disappearance.
  • US officials denied that the payment had anything to do with Pompeo’s visit or Khashoggi, though a source told The New York Times that the timing of the deposit “was no coincidence.”
  • Khashoggi, a longtime Saudi critic, has not been seen publicly since he walked into the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, Turkey, on October 2. He is feared dead.
  • Trump previously said Saudi Arabia would face “severe punishment” if evidence points to Saudi leaders having been involved in harming Khashoggi, but his administration has softened its stance in recent days, touting the Saudi royals’ repeated denials and even casting doubt on reported Turkish audio and video evidence.

  • Saudi Arabia is reportedly preparing to admit that Jamal Khashoggi, a journalist and prominent Saudi critic who disappeared on October 2, was killed as a result of a botched interrogation effort.
  • The move would mark a shifting response from the Royal Court, which previously asserted — without proof — that Khashoggi had left the Saudi Consulate. Depending on the facts that emerge, any negative action Saudi Arabia may have taken could trigger retaliation from the US in the form of sanctions.
  • But experts say slapping sanctions on Riyadh could be an difficult option for the Trump administration, “given the size of the economic ties between Washington and Riyadh.”
  • Sanctions on Riyadh could ultimately backfire, as the Kingdom holds major clout in the global economy, as well as vested interests in the US economy.

“The Kingdom also affirms that if it receives any action, it will respond with greater action, and that the Kingdom’s economy has an influential and vital role in the global economy,” the source added.

Sunday’s comments come just two days after US President Donald Trump warned that Riyadh would face “severe punishment” if it was found guilty of ordering the death of Khashoggi. He noted, however, that he would be unlikely to cancel the major arms deal between the two countries, stating that there would be “other ways of punishing” the government. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also stated that his country will be holding onto its $ 15 billion arms deal with Riyadh, despite the concerns surrounding Khashoggi.

However, Senator Marco Rubio (R-Florida) says the US must take action against Saudi Arabia – including potentially regarding arms sales – if the allegations are proven true. Otherwise, the US risks losing credibility when it comes to human rights, he told CBS’ Face the Nation on Sunday. His comments come after a bipartisan group of senators also proposed imposing sanctions on Riyadh over the matter. Trump’s words led to a plunge of Saudi Arabia’s stock market, in a possible foreshadowing of what could take place if countries take action against Riyadh in the form of sanctions.

Khashoggi, a critic of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and the Saudi royal family, was last seen on October 2 when he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul to get documents for his forthcoming marriage.

Turkey believes he was murdered inside the building by a 15-person “assassination squad,” with the government saying it has video and audio evidence proving he was killed at the consulate. However, it has not publicly presented that information.

The Turkish Daily Sabah newspaper reported on Saturday that a government investigation into the journalist’s disappearance revealed that recordings made on his Apple Watch indicate that he was tortured and killed. The paper cited “reliable sources in a special intelligence department.” It noted that the Apple Watch was synced with Khashoggi’s iPhone, which his fiancée was holding outside the consulate.

The paper further elaborated by claiming that Saudi intelligence agents had realized after Khashoggi died that the watch was recording, prompting them to use his fingerprint to unlock it. They reportedly deleted some files, but not all of them.

In a joint statement on Sunday, the foreign ministers of Britain, France, and Germany said they were treating the matter with the “utmost seriousness” and called for a “credible investigation” into the journalist’s disappearance, adding that anyone who bears responsibility should be held to account.

Khashoggi’s disappearance has already led to many media organizations withdrawing from an upcoming high-profile investment conference in Riyadh, including CNN, CNBC, The New York Times, and The Financial Times. Uber’s CEO has also backed out, while billionaire Richard Branson has suspended talks with Riyadh regarding a planned $ 1 billion investment into his space ventures.

Meanwhile, White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow told ABC News on Sunday that US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin is “intending to go” to the conference at the moment, but “will make up his mind as the week progresses and as new information surfaces.”

Saudi Arabia intercepted ‘Houthi missile’ over Riyadh https://briefnews.eu/saudi-arabia-intercepted-houthi-missile-over-riyadh/ https://briefnews.eu/saudi-arabia-intercepted-houthi-missile-over-riyadh/#respond Wed, 11 Apr 2018 18:21:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/saudi-arabia-intercepted-houthi-missile-over-riyadh/

Saudi Arabia’s air defense forces intercepted a missile over Riyadh on Wednesday, state media reports. Houthi rebels reportedly fired a number of missiles towards a Saudi government building.

The announcement came after three blasts and clouds of smoke were seen in the sky in Riyadh. Snapchat footage taken in Riyadh shows distinctive white and brown clouds of smoke in the sky.

The missile is thought to have been fired by Houthi rebels in Yemen, who a Saudi-led coalition has been bombing since March 2015, when it intervened in support of ousted President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi in an effort to prevent Houthis from maintaining the capital of Sanaa.

According to Al Masirah TV, which is run by the Houthis, the missile was aimed at the defense ministry. The Saudi-owned Al Arabiya also reports a Houthi scout drone was intercepted over Abha airport in southern Saudi Arabia, near Najran.

Colonel Turki al-Maliki, the spokesman for the Arab Coalition Forces fighting in Yemen, said that at 7:40 am local time air defense systems detected an object and dealt with it accordingly. After examining the debris, the coalition said it determined it was a Houthi aircraft.

Al Masirah TV also reported the group targeted an Aramco distribution facility in Jizan, in Saudi Arabia.

“The air force announced the execution of air strikes with the Qasef-1 aircraft on Aramco in Jizan,” it said on its Twitter page. The group unveiled the Qasef-1 drone last year.
