But it also can flush it of toxins, including those associated with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

Study leader Dr Maiken Nedergaard said: “This study shows for the first time that low doses of alcohol are potentially beneficial to brain health, improving the brain’s ability to remove waste.”

Research at the University of Rochester Medical Center in the US focused on the glymphatic system, the brain’s cleaning process.

It showed how cerebral spinal fluid is pumped into brain tissue and flushes away waste – including the proteins beta-amyloid and tau.

These are associated with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Previous studies have found that the glymphatic system is more active while we sleep, can be damaged by stroke and trauma, and improves with exercise.

The new research looked at the impact of both acute and chronic alcohol exposure and was conducted in mice. The mice were given low, intermediate, and high doses of alcohol.

When they studied the brains of animals exposed to high levels of alcohol over a long period, scientists observed high levels of a molecular marker for inflammation and impairment of cognitive abilities and motor skills.

Yet mice exposed to low levels of alcohol consumption, equivalent to approximately two-and-a-half small glasses of wine per day for humans, showed less inflammation in the brain.

Their glymphatic system was also more efficient in moving cerebral spinal fluid through the brain and removing waste, compared with “teetotal” mice.

Mice who drank low amounts also performed identically to the “teetotal” mice in cognitive and motor tests.

Dr Nedergaard added: “Prolonged intake of excessive amounts of ethanol is known to have adverse effects on the central nervous system.

“Studies have shown that low-to-moderate alcohol intake is associated with a lesser risk of dementia, while heavy drinking for many years confers an increased risk of cognitive decline. This study may help to explain why this occurs.”

The findings are published in the journal Scientific Reports.

However, a slew of popular online streaming websites now carry multiple versions of the leaked episode.

Season 7 Episode 4 has also .

Streaming an as-yet unaired episode of Game Of Thrones without permission from the copyright holder is obviously illegal.

However, it could also be dangerous for your computer, smartphone, or other internet-enabled device.

The warning comes courtesy of HBO – the the US television network behind Game Of Thrones – which has purportedly emailed people found to be streaming episodes of the show illegally.

According to a report by piracy-focused blog TorrentFreak, .

The US network warns users that this can be a “security risk for computers, devices, and networks”

“We have information leading us to believe that the IP address xx.xxx.xxx.xx was used to download or share Game of Thrones without authorisation,” the letter reads.

“HBO owns the copyright or exclusive rights to , and the unauthorised download or distribution constitutes copyright infringement.

“Downloading unauthorised or unknown content is also a security risk for computers, devices, and networks.”

Cybercriminals have previously with online pirates to spread malware.

Following the season 6 premiere, ransomware was introduced on The Pirate Bay to coincide with the influx of users looking to download Game Of Thrones episodes.

A fraudulent advertiser on The Pirate Bay used a pop-under advertisement to quietly redirect users and infect them with Cerber ransomware.

Security firm Malwarebytes discovered the threat, which used a victim’s vulnerable browser plugins to silently download a malicious payload to a system.

“Popular torrent site The Pirate Bay was serving ransomware via a malvertising attack this week-end.

“The ad network changes but the modus operandi remains the same,” Malwarebytes security researcher Jerome Segura said.

What made this ransomware so dangerous was the fact that users could become infected without even clicking on anything on the website.

The malicious malvertising campaign stealthily identified and attacked vulnerable browsers, targeting all users not running script blockers with the Pirate Bay ads, according to Malwarebytes.

Security Specialist at ESET, Mark James said: “Most users associate being infected by going to a dodgy website and downloading a dodgy file, or browsing a website and choosing to download a file that is bad.

“However, when presented with a scenario that’s capable of infecting them without any visible interaction on their behalf, the end user is often baffled by ‘how it happened’.”

A similar onslaught of malware happened when the first episode of Game Of Thrones season 3 first surfaced on torrent sites.

With the interest in the as-yet unaired “The Spoils Of War” episode, it’s safe to assume cybercriminals are looking to take advantage.

In the UK, Internet Service Providers, ISPs, including Virgin Media and Sky Broadband have previously mailed warning letters to those caught streaming illegally online.

The emails are part of a new campaign called Get It Right.

The UK campaign has a new website that provides answers to some of the most asked questions about torrents, peer-to-peer sharing, and copyright material.

‘Putting people at risk': Assange’s lawyer criticizes new documentary on WikiLeaks founder https://briefnews.eu/putting-people-at-risk-assanges-lawyer-criticizes-new-documentary-on-wikileaks-founder/ https://briefnews.eu/putting-people-at-risk-assanges-lawyer-criticizes-new-documentary-on-wikileaks-founder/#respond Mon, 24 Jul 2017 23:35:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/putting-people-at-risk-assanges-lawyer-criticizes-new-documentary-on-wikileaks-founder/ The recently released documentary on the WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, called “Risk,” compromises the security of those who appeared in the movie, Assange’s lawyer Melinda Taylor told RT.

The documentary “shows persons who never agreed to be in the film,” Taylor said, adding that “it is not just the WikiLeaks staff, who are put at risk, it is also the sources and persons they worked with.”

She also said that Assange “did withdraw his consent [to being shown in the film] but so did the others: so did his mother, so did [a British journalist, legal researcher, and WikiLeaks section editor] Sarah Harrison, so did [independent American journalist and computer security researcher] Jacob Appelbaum.”

Taylor explained that all these people did so “because they were not given an effective opportunity to voice their concerns and in some cases to even see the film before it was shown.”

“They were participating in this documentary under the strict conditions that they will receive the protection, that they will have a right to give input and to withdraw as well as to voice their concerns – none of this was respected,” she said, adding that the documentary poses a risk “not just for Assange but for the WikiLeaks sources, the people, who put their lives and security on the line to do the work they do.”

Taylor then said that the “Risk” director, the American documentary maker Laura Poitras, director of Academy Award winning CitizenFour about US whistleblower Edward Snowden, violated her initial agreement with Assange.

The agreement, under which Poitras was given “privileged access to WikiLeaks and Mr. Assange,” particularly said that the footage “was never to be edited in the US,” Taylor explained, adding that “Poitras allegedly broke that condition and took the footage to a country where she knew it would be [overseen] by the US authorities, who are waging a war against WikiLeaks.”

The lawyer also criticized the film for not showing the real work that WikiLeaks does. “It does not portray the work of WikiLeaks, it does not show the contributions they’ve made. There is a lot of scope for showing what WikiLeaks does that is just not there. If you want to know about WikiLeaks, go to the WikiLeaks page or to Justice For Assange. This documentary just does not show it,” Taylor said.

She confirmed that Assange’s lawyer, who also represents some other people who appeared in the film, “sent ‘cease and desist’ letters to the distributors of the film due to the fact that the participants did not authorize the use of their images in the film.”

Earlier, the distributors of the documentary said that Assange contacted them and demanded that they “immediately cease the use and distribution of all images of the Named Participants” that appeared in the documentary and “desist from this or any other infringement of the rights” of these people.

Ibuprofen WARNING: Regular usage for just ONE week 'increases heart attack risk' https://briefnews.eu/ibuprofen-warning-regular-usage-for-just-one-week-increases-heart-attack-risk/ https://briefnews.eu/ibuprofen-warning-regular-usage-for-just-one-week-increases-heart-attack-risk/#respond Wed, 10 May 2017 07:50:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ibuprofen-warning-regular-usage-for-just-one-week-increases-heart-attack-risk/

IbuprofenGETTY

Regular use of ibuprofen can increase the risk of heart attacks

A major new analysis has unmasked the health hazard in the common anti-inflammatory drugs with evidence suggesting the danger exists even after one day.

The scientists say the over the counter and prescription pills including ibuprofen, diclofenac, celecoxib and naproxen should now be used with care and at the lowest possible dose.

Heart attack risk increases with age and is made worse by raised cholesterol. So the experts say older people especially now need to carefully weigh up the need to take anti-inflammatories with their GP.

The latest strong note of caution over the group of medicines known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs [NSAIDs] has been urged following analysis of the health records of almost 500,000 people.

Sotiris Antoniou, of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, said: “We now know all NSAIDs have the potential to . This paper suggests the larger the dose and the longer duration is associated with greater risk of harm.

“If you have any doubts or questions seek advice from a pharmacist or doctor. It’s a good rule of thumb with any painkiller to take the lowest dose that’s effective for the shortest possible time.”

NSAIDs are a group of drugs taken by patients suffering joint problems, backache and arthritis.

People must be made aware of the risk

They are frequently prescribed to relieve pain, reduce inflammation and quell fever.

Although they are used by millions each day the NHS said the drugs were not suitable for everyone and could “sometimes cause side-effects”.

The latest research, published in the British Medical Journal, suggests it is wrong for people to assume the over-the-counter and frequently prescribed painkillers are harmless and safe.

Scientists from the University of Montreal Hospital Research Centre based their findings on drug prescribing or dispensing data from 446,763 people in Britain, Canada and Finland 61,460 of whom had a heart attack.

The observational study found taking any dose for one week, one month or more than a month was associated with an increased risk.

Previous studies pointed to an increased risk of heart attack with particular NSAIDs, like rofecoxib, but the latest research suggests for all common NSAIDs the risk of heart attack starts as early as the first one to seven days of use.

The study also showed that use of NSAIDs in the first month at a high daily dose [celecoxib 200 mg], diclofenac [100 mg], ibuprofen [1,200 mg] and naproxen [750 mg] was associated with the greatest risk.

HEARTGETTY

Previous studies pointed to an increased risk of heart attack with particular NSAIDs, like rofecoxib

Overall, researchers found risk of a heart attack is increased by about 20 to 50 per cent with the use of commonly available NSAIDs. However, on average, the risk of a heart attack due to NSAIDs is only about 1 per cent per year.

Epidemiologist Michele Bally, who led the study, said: “Given the onset of risk occurred in the first week and appeared greatest in the first month of treatment with higher doses, prescribers should consider weighing the risks and benefits of NSAIDs before instituting treatment, particularly for higher doses. We studied more than 60,000 cases and our results were precise enough to conclude that the use of all common NSAIDs is associated with a heightened risk of heart attack.”

NHS guidance recommends adults and children over 12 can take 300-400mg of ibuprofen 3-4 times a day, increased to a maximum 2.4g daily if necessary. Packs of the drug are widely available in supermarkets for as little as 50p.

Dr Ian Campbell, a family GP from Nottingham for more than 30 years, said: “This is really concerning. We have until now been attributing most heart attack risk to NSAIDs like diclofenac but this study suggests the risk of taking more commonly prescribed drugs such as naproxen are equally large. Additionally, the risk appears to be fairly immediate, even within one week, so previous advice to use the smallest dose for the shortest period appears to be of reduced significance. We now need to evaluate every prescription for NSAIDs in those at risk. Older people with additional risk factors need to weigh up the need for anti-inflammatory medicines very carefully, every time.”

Professor Helen Stokes-Lampard, chair of the Royal College of GPs, said: “NSAIDs can be effective in providing short term pain relief for some patients – what is important is any decision to prescribe is based on a patient’s individual circumstances and medical history and is regularly reviewed.”

PAINGETTY

Experts were not able to say what the potential underlying cause for increased heart attack is but previous research has suggested it might involve drugs blocking prostacyclin, a hormone that protects blood vessels and the kidney and thins the blood.

Dr Mike Knapton, associate medical director at the British Heart Foundation, said: “We already know these drugs increase your risk of having a heart attack. However, this large-scale study worryingly highlights just how quickly you become at risk of having a heart attack after starting NSAIDS. Whether you are being prescribed painkillers like ibuprofen, or buying them over the counter, people must be made aware of the risk and alternative medication should be considered where appropriate.”

Kevin McConway, emeritus professor of applied statistics at The Open University said: “This new study has helped persuade me that there is probably a real association between taking these painkillers and heart attacks.”

Health warnings over the effects of being with the wrong partner or arguing constantly came after experts analysed a decade of data on 10,055 participants who were dementia-free at the start of a pioneering study in 2002-2003.

Researchers from the University of East Anglia, University College London, London Metropolitan University and the University of Nottingham measured positive and negative experiences using a scale ranging from 1-4 with higher values indicating more of positive or negative support.

An increase of one point in the positive social support score led to up to a 17 per cent reduction in the instantaneous risk of developing dementia, findings showed.

Positive support was characterised by having a reliable, approachable and understanding relationship with spouses or partners, children and other immediate family.

But negative support scores showed stronger effects – an increase of one point in the negative support score led to up to 31 per cent rise in the risk.

Negative support was characterised by experiences of critical, unreliable and annoying behaviours from spouses or partners, children and other immediate family.

Results published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease showed of the 5,475 men and 4,580 women followed 3.4 per cent were recorded as developing some form of dementia between 2004-2012.

Dr Mizanur Khondoker, senior lecturer in medical statistics at University of East Anglia’s Norwich Medical School, said: “It is well known that having a rich network of close relationships, including being married and having adult children, is related to a reduced risk of cognitive decline and developing dementia.

“However, a relationship or social connection that does not work well can be a source of intense interpersonal stress, which may have a negative impact on both physical and mental health of older adults.

“It is not only the quantity of social connections, but the quality of those connections may be an important factor affecting older people’s cognitive health.”

Dr Laura Phipps, of Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “This study suggests negative relationships could be detrimental to cognitive health and increase the risk of dementia, but it’s not clear how much personal interactions themselves are directly to blame.”

Bowel cancer: The disease has been linked to antibiotics use

Experts have found the pills are linked to a heightened risk of abnormal growths in the colon and rectum – known as polyps or colorectal tumours – adenomas – which precede the development of most cases of bowel cancer.

The findings add to evidence that the type and diversity of bacteria in the gut, referred to as the ‘microbiome,’ may have a key role in the development of cancer.

In the study, data from 16,642 women who were aged 60 and older in 2004, able to provide a history of antibiotic use between the ages of 20 and 59, and who had had at least one bowel investigation between 2004 and 2010, was analysed.

During this period, 1195 adenomas were newly diagnosed in this group.

Recent use of antibiotics within the past four years wasn’t associated with a heightened risk of an adenoma diagnosis, but long term use in the past was.

Compared with those who hadn’t taken antibiotics for any extended period in their 20s and 30s, those who had taken them for two months or more were 36 per cent more likely to be diagnosed with an adenoma.

Experts revealed women who had taken antibiotics for two months or more during their 40s and 50s were 69 per cent more likely to be diagnosed with an adenoma than those who hadn’t taken these drugs for any extended period.

Again, the scientists found the association between the tumours and antibiotics was positive.

Compared with women who had not been on antibiotics for any length of time from their 20s to their 50s, those who had taken these drugs for more than 15 days between the ages of 20 and 39, and between the ages of 40 and 59, were 73 per cent more likely to be diagnosed with an adenoma.

However, experts have said they can’t draw firm conclusions about cause and effect.

The researchers also didn’t gather information on the type of antibiotics taken.

Why do antibiotics affect the gut?

Antibiotics fundamentally alter the gut microbiome, by curbing the diversity and number of bacteria, and reducing resistance to ‘hostile’ bugs.

Previous research points to depletion of certain types of bacteria and an abundance of others in patients with bowel cancer.

This might all have a crucial role the development of bowel cancer, added to which the bugs that require antibiotics may induce inflammation, which is a known risk for the development of bowel cancer.

“The findings, if confirmed by other studies, suggest the potential need to limit the use of antibiotics and sources of inflammation that may drive tumour formation,” conclude the researchers.

Bowel cancer symptoms: Experts say anything which disturbs gut bacteria may impact health

“There is increasing evidence that our microbiota are important in regulating our immune responses and many aspects of our normal functions, including digesting food and producing essential metabolites and vitamins,” said Dr Sheena Cruickshank, British Society for Immunology spokesperson, and Senior Lecturer in Immunology, University of Manchester.

“Thus, anything that disturbs our gut bacteria, such as changes in diet, inflammation or antibiotic use, may have an impact on our health.

“This study’s findings imply that any risk is very slight and also quite variable.

“Whilst the data adds to our growing knowledge of the importance of the gut bacteria to our health, I would be concerned about advising people to avoid using antibiotics.

“Antibiotics are crucial medicines for treating bacterial infections and, if prescribed and used appropriately, can be life-saving.”

The research was published in the journal Gut.

This comes after it was revealed doing this could reduce risk of deadly cancer by nearly a half.

Prostate cancer: THIS could 'DOUBLE your risk' of developing deadly disease https://briefnews.eu/prostate-cancer-this-could-double-your-risk-of-developing-deadly-disease-2/ https://briefnews.eu/prostate-cancer-this-could-double-your-risk-of-developing-deadly-disease-2/#respond Thu, 30 Mar 2017 15:01:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/prostate-cancer-this-could-double-your-risk-of-developing-deadly-disease-2/

But there are other factors which can dramatically affect a man’s chance of being diagnosed with the disease.

Prostate cancer is among nine types of cancer which are considered hereditary.

Some people inherit faulty genes which make their change of developing a particular cancer higher than normal.

Cancer Research UK said: “Up to one in 20 – five per cent – of cancers are caused by an inherited faulty gene.”

Other hereditary cancers include breast cancer, ovarian cancer and bowel cancer.

Professor Peter Wiklund, an expert in prostate cancer at Karolinska University Hospital, in Stockholm, Sweden has worked with Alivia Swiss Health’s Medical Intelligence Unit.

He said: “Prostate cancer is one of the most hereditary cancers.

“Having a first-order relative, such as a brother or father, with prostate cancer doubles the likelihood of developing the condition.

“Family history is, in fact, the strongest risk factor for prostate cancer.

“Other factors include increasing age and ethnicity; for example, African-American men in the US are more likely to develop an aggressive prostate cancer than Caucasian men.

Professor Wiklund has explained the little known facts about prostate cancer treatment and prevention.

He added: “Diet and sexual activity may not be as protective as one thought.

“There are a lot of scientific studies discussing the link between prostate cancer and diet but they’re lacking a proven link.

“Similarly, no conclusive link has been found to date between increased sexual activity and reduced risk of prostate cancer.”

Professor Wiklung said men who have received a diagnosis of prostate cancer and are receiving treatment can reduce their risk of side-effects from treatment.

He said: “While it is not always possible to completely avoid incontinence and impotence after prostate cancer surgery, there are steps you can take to lower your risk of developing these side effects or effectively deal with them if present.

“Choose your surgeon wisely. Experienced surgeons are more likely to preserve their patients’ continence and potency.

“Avoid cigarette smoking. There is evidence to suggest that the risk of developing erectile dysfunction is greater among smokers than non-smokers.

“Follow a healthy lifestyle. Eating healthy, exercising regularly and losing excessive body weight lower your chances of developing high blood pressure, high cholesterol and heart disease – all of which are well-known risk factors for erectile dysfunction.”

CANNABIS WARNING: Smoking the Class B drug 'increases stroke and heart failure risk' https://briefnews.eu/cannabis-warning-smoking-the-class-b-drug-increases-stroke-and-heart-failure-risk-2/ https://briefnews.eu/cannabis-warning-smoking-the-class-b-drug-increases-stroke-and-heart-failure-risk-2/#respond Thu, 09 Mar 2017 20:40:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cannabis-warning-smoking-the-class-b-drug-increases-stroke-and-heart-failure-risk-2/

The Class B drug was associated with a significantly increased risk for stroke, heart failure, coronary artery disease and sudden cardiac death.

It was also linked with a variety of factors known to increase cardiovascular risk, such as obesity, high blood pressure, smoking and alcohol use

Yet the drug carried a higher risk even after accounting for demographic factors, other health conditions and lifestyle risk factors such as smoking tobacco and drinking.

As many countries look to legalise the drug or to prescribe it medically to alleviate symptoms of other diseases, the study sheds new light on how the drug affects cardiovascular health.

Heart expert Dr Aditi Kalla at the Einstein Medical Centre in Philadelphia said: “Like all other drugs, whether they’re prescribed or not prescribed, we want to know the effects and side effects of this drug

“It’s important for physicians to know these effects so we can better educate patients, such as those who are inquiring about the safety of cannabis or even asking for a prescription for cannabis.“

Previous studies has focused on the harm caused to the lungs or mental state by marijuana use.

The new study based on medical records from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample compiled from a fifth of all US health centres was one of only a handful to investigate cardiovascular outcomes.

It analysed over 20 million records of young and middle-aged patients aged between 18 and 55 who were discharged from 1,000 hospitals in 2009 and 2010, when marijuana use was illegal in most states.

It identified 316,000 patients – 1.5 per cent – where marijuana use was diagnosed in the notes.

Their cardiovascular disease rates were compared to those who shunned the drug.

Dr Kalla said: “Even when we corrected for known risk factors, we still found a higher rate of both stroke and heart failure in these patients, so that leads us to believe that there is something else going on besides just obesity or diet-related cardiovascular side effects.

“More research will be needed to understand the pathophysiology behind this effect.”

Using cell cultures the study showed heart muscle cells have cannabis receptors relevant to contractility, or squeezing ability, suggesting that those receptors might be one mechanism through which marijuana use could affect the cardiovascular system.

It also suggested other compounds could be developed to counteract that mechanism and reduce cardiovascular risk.

Yet because it was based on hospital discharge notes, researchers could not find out how much and often they used the drug, whether it was recreational or medical use or whether they smoked or ingested it.

The growing trend toward legalisation of marijuana could mean that patients and doctors will become more comfortable speaking openly about marijuana use, which could allow for better data collection and further insights into the drug’s effects and side effects, he added.

The study was presented at the American College of Cardiology’s 66th Annual Scientific Session in Washington.
