  • The world’s northernmost town is Longyearbyen, which is located in the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard and has 2,100 citizens.
  • It is around three hours by plane from Oslo and 650 miles from the North Pole, making it one of the most remote human settlements on Earth.
  • It’s dark for four months a year and light for another four months. There are also more polar bears than there are people.
  • Despite its remoteness, Longyearbyen has all the amenities of a modern town, including a school, a church, restaurants, and a cinema.

Look at the World Atlas list of the world’s northernmost settlements and you’ll see that many at the very top of the list are located in Svalbard — a Norwegian archipelago between mainland Norway and the North Pole.

The first settlement on the list with a population worthy of being described as a town, though, is Longyearbyen, which hosts around 2,100 people who have access to a school, a church, restaurants, and a cinema.

Life in Longyearbyen, despite its amenities, is unlike anywhere else on Earth.

For starters, it’s dark four months a year and perpetually light for another four months. Secondly, it’s suggested residents carry a rifle when travelling outside the town borders — in case they run into a polar bear.

Like many of the settlements in this part of the world, Longyearbyen was established as a mining town, though mining operations have since been phased out of the area.

Now, the town is a place of scientific research and adventure tourism — it is the home of the famous doomsday seed vault, which stores every known crop on the planet.

 update 6.30 is being prepped ahead of release by Epic Games.

The next major Fortnite Battle Royale update is expected to launch on November 6 or November 7.

Update 6.30 is likely to launch following a period of server downtime.

The Fortnite servers will go offline at 8am GMT, and should return by around 10am UK time.

Epic Games will confirm update release plans soon, so stay tuned for more information.

In terms of patch notes, update 6.30 is almost certain to add a brand new weapon.

In-game news notifications have confirmed plans to release the Heavy Assault Rifle.

The Heavy AR is said to be ideal for short bursts of action, according to Epic Games.

“Powerful Assault Rifle that is most useful when fired in short bursts,” reads the official description.

The Epic Games Trello board also reveals some of the issues being investigated by the studio.

Epic Games is investigating an issue with crosshairs being blocked for certain outfits while aiming.

Elsewhere, Player models in Replays are sometimes getting stuck with Shadow Stone effects. There’s also a problem with music for certain emotes not playing. 

But the main problem appears to be associated with the recently released update 6.21 patch.

Epic is said to be investigating performance issues that appeared after the release of update 6.21.

Mobile versions of Fortnite are also having problems, as players struggle to login.

Jerky camera movement is said to be fixed in the next release, alongside graphical problems with crooked balloons.

patch notes for update V4.4 are out now, with the Battle Royale players getting a brand new weapon.

The Fortnite patch notes revealed update V4.4 has brought with it the new Thermal Scope Assault Rifle for Battle Royale.

However, one thing that is not coming with Fortnite update V4.4 is the highly anticipated – and delayed – Playground mode.

The Playground LTM was originally meant to launch with Fortnite update V4.3 but was instead put on hold.

Announcing the delay previously, Epic said: “[We’re] still actively working on it, there are some significant necessary back-end improvements we’re working towards.”

The Fortnite patch notes were revealed in a post on the Epic Games website.

Introducing it they said: “Mind your step, eligible Traps can now be placed on ramps in both Battle Royale and Save the World.

“The Thermal Scope Assault Rifle also makes its debut in Battle Royale, so be careful where you hide. Fight alongside a mysterious new mythic hero in the next installment of the Blockbuster quadrilogy, Blockbuster Part 3: The Cloaked Star.”

The US Army will begin fielding roughly 6,000 Heckler & Koch G28E rifles as the service’s new Squad Designated Marksman Rifle before the end of fiscal 2018.

A directed requirement, based on the needs of US Army Forces Command, will ensure that every squad in infantry and other combat units will be outfitted with the G28E, the weapon the Army selected to become the Compact Semi-Automatic Sniper System (CSASS) in 2016, according to Daryl Easlick, the small arms deputy for the Lethality Branch at Fort Benning’s Maneuver Center of Excellence.

A San Diego-area high school student was arrested at his home in Lemon Grove, California, Tuesday evening on charges of terroristic threats after posting a picture of an AR-15-style assault rifle made of Lego on social media.

According to a Wednesday statement released by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the unnamed 14-year-old boy posted a picture around 10pm Tuesday evening on Instagram with the message, “Don’t come to school tomorrow.” Another student asked him to take the image down, but he refused.

“It was learned he had access to hunting rifles,” the SDCSD wrote. “The investigation is ongoing to determine if this student has access to other weapons. He was booked into Juvenile Hall on a felony charge of making a criminal threat.”
