“I would tear my hair out morning after morning seeing GMTV and not seeing any Labour representatives,” Thornberry continued.

“Good Morning Britain,” Ray corrected. “It’s not been called GMTV for a long time.”

Thornberry apologised but Ray swiped: “If you’re going to be the leader of any party you need to know that.”

Deflecting, Thornberry remarked: “What I need if I’m going to be leader of the party is to appear on this programme on a regular basis and be accountable.”

  • Jeremy Corbyn, British Prime Minister Theresa May’s most powerful adversary, wants to create a publicly-owned tech company to rival Facebook and Netflix.
  • His idea is called the British Digital Corporation and people think it sounds like a nationalised Facebook without the fake news and data misuse, where users can vote to get TV shows made.
  • The vision is deliberately radical, but it has been ridiculed as unworkable and unnecessary.
  • A senior BBC figure told Business Insider that the British Digital Corporation overlooks an organisation already doing the very things Corbyn wants to achieve — the BBC.

Imagine a website that has the power to connect you with others like Facebook, but also the ability to grip you with TV content to rival Netflix. Now imagine owning that website.

That was basically the proposal put forward this week by Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of Britain’s opposition party and Prime Minister Theresa May’s most powerful adversary.

‘Is Putin a CIA agent?’ NYT’s ‘dumbest paragraphs ever printed’ ridiculed online https://briefnews.eu/is-putin-a-cia-agent-nyts-dumbest-paragraphs-ever-printed-ridiculed-online/ https://briefnews.eu/is-putin-a-cia-agent-nyts-dumbest-paragraphs-ever-printed-ridiculed-online/#respond Thu, 05 Apr 2018 16:08:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/is-putin-a-cia-agent-nyts-dumbest-paragraphs-ever-printed-ridiculed-online/

From the newspaper that brought you headlines like “Mother Russia crashes the Oscars,” and “What homoerotic videos can teach us about modern Russia,” comes another smash hit: “Is Putin a CIA agent?”

In the lauded journalist’s latest column, Thomas Friedman poses his ridiculous question, before unloading on the Russian leader in fourteen paragraphs of unfounded allegations, personal grievances, and impotent rage.

When he’s not trashing Putin for his “shirtless bravado” and apparent insecurity, Friedman rejoices in the expulsion of Russian diplomats from the West following the poisoning of Sergei and Julia Skripal. The fact that no evidence that Russia was involved in the poisoning was publically presented does not bother Friedman, nor does the fact that the nerve agent used may not have even originated in Russia.

Facts would only get in the way of his righteous outrage.

Likewise, Friedman describes Russia’s intervention in Syria as “another short-term sugar high for his base.” In reality, Russian intervention in Syria between 2015 and 2017 helped crush Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS), to the point where the terrorist group holds only two percent of the territory it held in 2015. Russian firms are now moving into Syria to rebuild the nation’s energy grid.

Naturally, Friedman’s fellow journalists took to Twitter to savage his column. They described it as “breathtakingly stupid,” “insufferable,” and “perhaps the dumbest 8 to 10 paragraphs ever printed in the New York Times.”

Current Affairs magazine held Friedman’s column up high as an example to young writers, saying:  “once again, aspiring writers: if you’re worried that you won’t have a successful writing career because you don’t think your writing is good enough, there’s no better way of gaining confidence in your relative abilities than by reading thomas friedman’s columns.”

Putin is not Friedman’s only target. He regularly uses his column to blast President Donald Trump, American gun owners, and whoever else opposes his sanctimonious brand of New York Neoliberalism.

And while it must be noted that Friedman’s opinion column does not necessarily reflect the views of the Times as a whole, it’s right at home in a newspaper that devotes column inch after column inch to bashing Russia every day.

A Midsummer Night’s Scream: Hammond ridiculed for reported homeless remarks https://briefnews.eu/a-midsummer-nights-scream-hammond-ridiculed-for-reported-homeless-remarks/ https://briefnews.eu/a-midsummer-nights-scream-hammond-ridiculed-for-reported-homeless-remarks/#respond Wed, 28 Feb 2018 10:45:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-midsummer-nights-scream-hammond-ridiculed-for-reported-homeless-remarks/ Philip Hammond is in hot water for comparing the summer night he slept on a beach with being homeless. The Tory Chancellor rolled out his anecdote in a Cabinet discussion on aiding rough sleepers during the UK’s cold snap.

Cabinet devoted most of Wednesday’s meeting to hashing out the Tories’ plan of attack on rough sleeping – a £28 million ($ 39 million) scheme to provide stable and affordable housing for the homeless. The talks come as Britain’s itinerants are in the clutches of the dreaded ‘Beast from the East’.

During the meeting the Chancellor told colleagues how he had not been considered homeless even though he had once been “sleeping on the beach at midnight on Midsummer’s day.” Hammond used the story to try to communicate the challenges faced when trying to help rough sleepers.

Last night aides to Hammond insisted that he was not being dismissive of the issue. Apparently he had been trying to make clear to his colleagues that someone spending a night on the beach did not mean they were homeless.

“Philip would never be flippant about such a serious matter,” one aide told the Telegraph. “At the last Budget he announced £28 million to spend on homeless people. It is an issue he takes very seriously.”

Another of the Chancellor’s defenders said to the paper that he sometimes explains complex matters with clumsy language open to misinterpretation. “He was trying to make the point that [for the homeless] it is the second night you have to focus on.”

A Cabinet colleague described Hammond’s remarks as his “fields of wheat moment.” In reference to the now notorious time that Theresa May said her wildest memory was running through farmland as a child, technically trespassing.

Hammond is quickly garnering a reputation for gaffes. Last summer his aides were forced to deny that the Chancellor of the Exchequer had told Cabinet members that driving trains was so easy that “even a woman can do it.”

John Jones, 63, was pictured crying along with his two dogs and his possessions dumped on the ground after council evicted him from his own caravan.

Labour were quick to jump on the comments. Shadow Housing Secretary John Healey MP told Politics Home that “If true, these comments are inappropriate, and confirm that Conservative Ministers just don’t grasp how serious the problem of rising rough sleeping is. The Chancellor must either repudiate these reports or apologise.”

In turn, a Number 10 spokesman simply echoed the Conservative Government’s pledge to eradicate homelessness. “The Prime Minister said that rough sleeping was a tragedy and that is why the Government is committed to halving rough sleeping by 2022 and eliminating it altogether by 2027,” the spokesman said.

“Cabinet heard that the Government is supporting rough sleepers through a new housing first approach, with pilots due to take place in the West Midlands, Liverpool and Manchester. This £28m project will provide intensive support to entrenched rough sleepers, providing them with stable, affordable accommodation and other support.”

Perhaps Hammond ought to take the advice recently given to him by Commons Speaker John Bercow: “Stick to your abacus.”

The trade that cost the Browns Deshaun Watson and had them ridiculed by the NFL world could still work out for them https://briefnews.eu/the-trade-that-cost-the-browns-deshaun-watson-and-had-them-ridiculed-by-the-nfl-world-could-still-work-out-for-them/ https://briefnews.eu/the-trade-that-cost-the-browns-deshaun-watson-and-had-them-ridiculed-by-the-nfl-world-could-still-work-out-for-them/#respond Thu, 04 Jan 2018 18:48:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-trade-that-cost-the-browns-deshaun-watson-and-had-them-ridiculed-by-the-nfl-world-could-still-work-out-for-them/ hue jacksonRon Schwane/AP

  • The Cleveland Browns traded the 12th pick in the draft last year to the Houston Texans for a 2018 first-round pick.
  • That 2018 pick from the Texans is now the fourth pick in the draft after the Texans struggled following Deshaun Watson’s injury.
  • The Browns now own the first and fourth picks in the draft and could add two franchise players to help a roster that just went 0-16.

Trading the pick that became Dehshaun Watson hasn’t looked good for the Cleveland Browns so far, but there’s still a chance for it to work out.

During the 2017 NFL Draft, the Browns traded the No. 12 pick to the Houston Texans for the 25th overall pick and a 2018 first-rounder. The Texans used that pick on Watson, who lit up the NFL before tearing his ACL and missing the rest of the season.

The Browns were criticized for that trade as they stumbled through an 0-16 season and struggled, once again, to get any sort of competent quarterback play. The optics were even worse as the year before they traded the second overall pick to the Philadelphia Eagles, who used it on Carson Wentz, another young star quarterback.

However, Watson’s injury helped the Browns in a way. After Watson got injured, the Texans went just 1-9, to finish the year 4-12 overall. As a result, the Browns will now have the No. 1 pick (their own) in the 2018 draft and the fourth overall pick courtesy of the Texans.

With a quarterback draft class that includes Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Baker Mayfield, and likely Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson, the Browns will have their pick at any of the highly coveted quarterbacks, plus another top player in that top four.

Additionally, the Browns have three second-round picks, which could help them bolster their depth.

Of course, the draft is a crapshoot and the Browns will have to nail those picks to make any kind of progress next season. But with Myles Garrett, last year’s top pick, on defense, and some intriguing players like safety Jabrill Peppers, tight end David Njoku, and wide receiver Josh Gordon, the Browns could add some depth and talent to a roster that badly needs it.

After an 0-16 season, the Browns need all of the help they can get, and they’ll have the chance to begin building promising core around Garrett and their two top-four picks this year.

I’m A Celebrity 2017: Amir Khan savagely ridiculed over epic blunder – did you spot it? https://briefnews.eu/im-a-celebrity-2017-amir-khan-savagely-ridiculed-over-epic-blunder-did-you-spot-it/ https://briefnews.eu/im-a-celebrity-2017-amir-khan-savagely-ridiculed-over-epic-blunder-did-you-spot-it/#respond Mon, 20 Nov 2017 22:54:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/im-a-celebrity-2017-amir-khan-savagely-ridiculed-over-epic-blunder-did-you-spot-it/

For the first time ever, the I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! camp mates have been treated to their very own bath, complete with hot water.

Understandably, the tub was a huge hit with camp mates, apart from Amir, 30, who appeared to panic when the luxury item began “smoking”

“It’s smoking, I’ve seen it smoking!” he cried to an oblivious Jamie Lomas, 42, and Jack Maynard, 22.

Though, viewers were in hysterics as they swiftly began to correct Amir in their droves on Twitter.

“#ImACeleb since when did hot water produce smoke? #amirkhan Was the bath tub on fire?” pondered one baffled audience member, as another teased: “How normal people check there bath temperature: put hand in. How Amir Khan checks his bath temperature: ‘See if it’s smoking’.”

A third cried: “Never in my life would I ever think I’d see Amir Kahn going up and down on a seesaw filling up a bath tub saying ‘it’s hot I can see smoke coming out of it’.”

“‘It’s smoking!’ No Mr Khan that’s called steam coming off the bath water,” sighed one more, before a fifth asked: “Do you think Amir saw the bath smoking?”

Others simply slammed ITV bosses for treating the celebrities with a bath in the first place, claiming it completely squashed the premise of the show.

“Since when does a jungle have a bathtub? Ok, a phone box isn’t natural either, but a bath? Really? #ImACeleb,” moaned one critic, as another agreed: “THEY HAVE A SEESAW AND A BATH TUB THERE WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?”

“Hot bath in the jungle?! Come on #imaceleb they’ve got it too easy,” complained one more, which was followed by: “Hang on!! A friggin BATH… with hot water!? Oh yeh that’s really surviving in the jungle innit? Bloody hell!!”

Also in tonight’s instalment, viewers were unimpressed as Amir quit the Bushtucker trial just seconds into the challenge.

I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! continues tomorrow at 9pm on ITV.

Edinburgh student who ridiculed ISIS online investigated for Islamophobia https://briefnews.eu/edinburgh-student-who-ridiculed-isis-online-investigated-for-islamophobia/ https://briefnews.eu/edinburgh-student-who-ridiculed-isis-online-investigated-for-islamophobia/#respond Tue, 05 Sep 2017 13:09:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/edinburgh-student-who-ridiculed-isis-online-investigated-for-islamophobia/ A law student has become subject of an investigation by his university after allegedly mocking Islamic State (formerly ISIL/ISIS) on social media and undermining minority students’ safety.

Robbie Travers, a third-year-law student at Edinburgh University, is being investigated after an official who carried out the preliminary investigation claimed he had committed a “hate crime.” No criminal investigation, however, has been opened by the police.

Travers posted the allegedly-racist material on Facebook in the aftermath of the US Air Force bombing an IS stronghold in Afghanistan back in April.

“Excellent news that the US administration and Trump ordered an accurate strike on an IS network of tunnels in Afghanistan.

“I’m glad we could bring these barbarians a step closer to collecting their 72 virgins,” Travers wrote.

Although he acknowledged that his comments were highly opinionated, Travers denied they were of a racist nature.

“I am deeply worried that I am being investigated for comments which are expressions of opinion in a jovial way . . . I do not incite the harassment or racist treatment, nor attack anyone with an illegal suggestion or suggest, indeed, that they be deprived of their human rights,” he said, according to the Times.

The investigation was prompted by a complaint filed by second-year history student Esme Allman, who said Travers’ comments amounted to “blatant Islamophobia.”

Allman filed a complaint saying, “Not only do I believe this behaviour to be in breach of the student code of conduct, but his decision to target the BME Liberation Group at the University of Edinburgh, and how he has chosen to do so, puts minority students at risk and in a state of panic and fear while attending the University of Edinburgh.”

However according to the Times, Travers said the complaint came in retaliation to him highlighting that Allman, who is also the former black and ethnic minority convener of the university’s Students’ Association, had said all black men are “trash.”

Allman identifies herself online as “a self-proclaimed feminist” seeking to create an all-inclusive community.

“I value inclusivity as well as building and preserving safe spaces for us. Creating a truly intersectional campaign is incredibly important to me and my first job will be to work alongside the other liberation groups to ensure EUSA are fully representative of our views.”

A university spokesman confirmed that “complaints alleging misconduct have been received against Mr. Travers and these are being investigated.

“We are committed to providing an environment in which all members of the university community treat each other with dignity and respect and our code of student conduct sets out clear expectations of behaviour,” the Times quoted him as saying.

‘Humiliation’: Iranian MPs ridiculed for scrambling to take selfies with EU’s Mogherini (PHOTOS) https://briefnews.eu/humiliation-iranian-mps-ridiculed-for-scrambling-to-take-selfies-with-eus-mogherini-photos/ https://briefnews.eu/humiliation-iranian-mps-ridiculed-for-scrambling-to-take-selfies-with-eus-mogherini-photos/#respond Mon, 07 Aug 2017 17:49:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/humiliation-iranian-mps-ridiculed-for-scrambling-to-take-selfies-with-eus-mogherini-photos/

Iranian MPs have been ridiculed for scrambling to take selfies with top EU diplomat Federica Mogherini, while she was visiting the country to attend the swearing in ceremony of President Hassan Rouhani on Saturday.

Photos show a number of Iranian politicians scrambling to get close to the Italian, some MPs going so far as to perch themselves on tables to get a snap with the diplomat. Iran’s Fars news agency described their behavior as “strange.”

Many comments appeared on Iranian social media under the hashtag “selfies of humiliation.” Some social media users mocked the politicians, with reference to famous films in which men – or rather dwarves in this case – fawn over a woman.

This popular tweet compared the commotion to the famous scene in the film ‘Malèna’, in which a group of men fall over themselves in an attempt to light Italian beauty Monica Bellucci’s cigarette.

The Ghanoon daily published a cartoon of Mogherini mocked up to resemble Edvard Munch’s painting ‘The Scream’ with MPs taking photos in the background.

Mogherini has long sought to strengthen ties between the Islamic Republic and the European Union. She has been praised for her negotiating skills which contributed to the 2015 international agreement on Iran’s nuclear program.

United Airlines ridiculed online as airline CEO ‘emphatically’ backs employees https://briefnews.eu/united-airlines-ridiculed-online-as-airline-ceo-emphatically-backs-employees/ https://briefnews.eu/united-airlines-ridiculed-online-as-airline-ceo-emphatically-backs-employees/#respond Tue, 11 Apr 2017 11:52:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/united-airlines-ridiculed-online-as-airline-ceo-emphatically-backs-employees/

The PR firestorm which engulfed United Airlines since a passenger was dragged off one of its overbooked flights shows no sign of being extinguished. In fact, the incident has inspired Twitter users to invent company mottos for the company.

The incident that sparked the debacle took place on United Flight 3411 from Chicago O’Hare International Airport to Louisville, Kentucky, on Sunday. Videos filmed by other passengers showed a man screaming and resisting as airport police forcibly removed him from his seat.

People across the world reacted with shock and outrage when the footage emerged. Since then, United’s attempts to address the incident have managed only to heighten public outcry.

The videos show the man being dragged down the aisle on his back with his stomach exposed. There’s a significant amount of blood around his mouth and his body is limp.

Twitter users have been inspired by the airline’s treatment of one of its passengers to invent new company slogans and have been sharing them with the hashtag #NewUnitedAirlinesMottos.

The video has also sparked outrage in China as the man was overheard saying he was being profiled for being Chinese. The video was the number one trending topic on Chinese social media site Weibo on Tuesday, attracting more than 130 million views. Many people alleged that United were guilty of anti-Chinese discrimination and called for a boycott of the airline.

In a letter reportedly circulated to employees United Chief Executive Officer Oscar Munoz did not apologize for the way the passenger was treated, writing that he had “defied” security officers, Reuters reported.

Munoz said that he “emphatically” stands behind his employees – though he did concede there are lessons the company can learn from this situation.

“We sought volunteers and then followed our involuntary denial of boarding process (including offering up to $ 1,000 in compensation),” Munoz wrote. “When we approached one of these passengers to explain apologetically that he was being denied boarding, he raised his voice and refused to comply with crew member instructions.”

Using the hashtag #DontFlyUnited, many expressed their disgust with the airline and say they would not be using the company again in the future.

The Chicago Department of Aviation said in a statement that one of the security officers involved in the incident did not follow protocol and has been placed on leave pending an investigation.

Passengers on the plane said the man told United staff that he was a doctor and had to return home to his patients.

The man subsequently ran back onto the plane and another video shows him in a very distressed state repeating: “Just kill me. Kill me,” and “I have to go home.”

‘The art of the fail’: Trump ridiculed as vote on healthcare bill pulled https://briefnews.eu/the-art-of-the-fail-trump-ridiculed-as-vote-on-healthcare-bill-pulled/ https://briefnews.eu/the-art-of-the-fail-trump-ridiculed-as-vote-on-healthcare-bill-pulled/#respond Sat, 25 Mar 2017 00:06:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-art-of-the-fail-trump-ridiculed-as-vote-on-healthcare-bill-pulled/

President Donald Trump’s much-hyped repeal of Obamacare isn’t quite going to plan after his party pulled a scheduled House vote on the American Health Care Act (AHCA). Needless to say, netizens were quick to bask in the glory of the defeat.

For many, it was hard not to recall Trump’s 1987 book “Art of the Deal,” which people were keen to point out should have its genre reclassified as fiction.

In what would have been a major coup for Trump, it was hard not to imagine how Obama felt upon hearing his flagship legislation would live to see another day.

With Obamacare staying on the books for the foreseeable future, people were quick to point out the “advantages” of the failed vote, some of which were applicable to the opposition.

Of course, not everyone would be as relieved as Obama and, for some in the Twitterverse, they couldn’t look past how the Trump camp would be feeling following the failed vote.
