This past weekend, I had the opportunity to rack up a few hundred miles in our long-term 2018 Honda Ridgeline. So far, I’m rather enjoying this unusual pickup, and there are a number of features that are really standing out. So I’ve gathered a few of the highlights to shower some love on. Naturally, it’s not all rainbows and puppies (the latter I mean somewhat literally), so I’ve also dragged a few of the Ridgeline’s rougher edges into the sunlight for a public shaming. Without further ado, let’s look at the good and bad sides.

What I love about the Honda Ridgeline

The size: While I wouldn’t go so far as to call the Ridgeline small, it’s really quite manageable, and I credit a large part of that to the short nose. Since the truck has a transverse-mounted engine and a front-drive based drivetrain, it doesn’t have to have much length at the front, nor does it. As a result, it’s still a four-door truck with a decent length bed (5.3 feet to be exact), but it almost completely fits in parking spaces. And the short nose means it’s easy to thread through tight parking lots.

The trunk: Seriously, this feature is awesome. I took full advantage of it this past weekend when I hauled my dog, her food and medicine, and my own stuff back to my parents’ house, and then had a small end table to bring back with all the aforementioned items. None of it was really big enough to be stable in the bed, nor did I want it exposed to the elements. I probably could have put it in the cab, but that would’ve meant stuffing stuff in the rear footwell, under the rear seat, and possibly on the front passenger seat.

2018 Honda Ridgeline trunk

But instead, because of the remarkable capaciousness of the trunk, I could put everything in there. The exception of course being my little (OK, more like medium) pup who rode in the back seat. This also freed up the front passenger seat to house road-trip snacks. It was easy to load, too, since when the tailgate is swung out, instead of down, you can walk right up next to the bin and simply lower things in. And although it wasn’t necessary on this trip, since I didn’t make any stops, the trunk adds the advantage of being locked and hidden, so it’s very secure. Oh, and one more thing. The spare tire and jack are tucked in here, too, so if you were to find yourself stuck with a flat, you won’t have to crawl underneath in the cold dirt to access the spare tire.

The comfort: The Ridgeline is a great mileage muncher. The seats, although lacking a bit in support, are thickly padded, so they stay comfortable over the long haul. Ride quality is great as well, transforming most bumps into gentle nudges, and keeping the body extremely composed. The Ridgeline is an impressively quiet vehicle, too. Particularly impressive was the near lack of road and tire noise. The super-smooth V6 also plays a part in keeping the cabin quiet, as does the six-speed automatic that keeps the revs really low while cruising around. It makes for a smooth, soothing long-haul hauler.

What I loathe about the Ridgeline

Small rear doors: More specifically, I’m annoyed by the small openings of the rear doors. I’m not sure if it’s because the doors themselves are on the small side, or if they don’t open wide enough, but it’s more difficult than it should be to hop in the back of the Ridgeline. I’m not the only one who noticed. My parents discovered this the last time they rode in the truck. It’s also strange considering that space back there isn’t all that tight.

2018 Honda Ridgeline rear seat

Fuel economy: The Honda Ridgeline only does OK in terms of fuel economy. On my return trip from my parents’ house, I managed 24.6 mpg. That’s darn close to the EPA rating of 25 mpg, but I also had it in Eco mode with the cruise control set pretty much to the speed limit or barely over it. And it was nonstop driving. And this isn’t the worst fuel economy in the world, but the V6 Chevy Colorado is only shy by a couple mpg on the highway, and it has more power, as well as better off-road capability. Many versions of the bigger Ford F-150 also match or come near to the Ridgeline’s highway fuel economy. I simply expected more from a more car-like pickup truck.

No paddle shifters: I’m sure I’m in the minority here, but it bothers me that I can’t choose my own gears in this truck. Part of this is because I’ve experienced paddle shifters in the Honda Odyssey, and found myself having way more fun hustling it around than I ever would have expected. But part of it is also because there are times I think I could make better shift decisions than the transmission. Occasionally, the transmission doesn’t nail the right gear in part throttle circumstances, and other times it’s not quick enough at deciding. There are also times that I’m wanting to be more aggressive, but my preferences fall between the fuel economy-oriented normal shift mode, and the overly aggressive low shift setting.

2018 Honda Ridgeline | Pocketknife pickup is up for anything https://briefnews.eu/2018-honda-ridgeline-pocketknife-pickup-is-up-for-anything/ https://briefnews.eu/2018-honda-ridgeline-pocketknife-pickup-is-up-for-anything/#respond Tue, 20 Feb 2018 19:30:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/2018-honda-ridgeline-pocketknife-pickup-is-up-for-anything/
BIRMINGHAM, MICH. — The 2018 Honda Ridgeline is up for anything. It’s well-rounded and offers just enough capability for most pickup buyers. That’s stating the obvious, but after a few weeks behind the wheel of the Ridgeline, I’m impressed with Honda’s balanced approach to the ultra-competitive midsize truck segment. I call it the pocketknife pickup. It’s smaller than full-sized monsters like the Ford F-150 and its rivals, but the Honda punches above its weight. Here are three observations after ruminating on the Ridgeline, which joined the Autoblog long-term fleet, this winter.

It has plenty of capability:

For everyone who simply wants but doesn’t absolutely need a pickup, this will get the job done. It’s a sentiment we’ve expressed since our First Drive review back in 2016. I tossed an oversized recliner from the late ’90s into the back of the Ridgeline, no problem. Picture one of those overstuffed things on which you probably watched Home Improvement or zoned out to Pearl Jam back in the day. I tied it down snugly and there was plenty of room left over, should I have needed to haul something else.

This is why many consumers buy a pickup – to occasionally haul or tow something. The 280-horsepower V6 is solid. And with a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds and a payload rating of 1,499 pounds, the Ridgeline offers all the grunt you need, most of the time. Sure, there’s a segment of buyers who regularly need more capability – for the folks that actually need a work truck, the full-size segment has plenty of options. But for errands, the Ridgeline is ace: I also took it to Costco, trekked across town in a blizzard and put the dog in back to run errands. The pickup fulfilled its utilitarian duties to the fullest.

It’s a strategic consumer choice:

In a segment with a lot of strong personalities, the Ridgeline makes its case by being a bit vanilla. The inside feels like almost any Honda, and the outside is nebulous enough that this could pass as a Volkswagen or Hyundai.

To put it another way, the Ridgeline is simple and smart looking, which is all it needs to be (but not all it could be – more on that in a second). This approach could lure in a wide range of potential buyers, since other midsizers like the rough-and-ready Toyota Tacoma might turn off some. It’s a savvy play for Honda, as this is one of the best times in recent memory to buy a midsize pickup. The Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon and Toyota Tacoma are all relatively new, and the Ford Ranger is on the way for 2019. The Jeep Wrangler pickup is also expected to launch next year. The rumored name is “Scrambler,” and based on my love of the old Comanche trucks, this would be my choice if I were actually in market, but I digress.

Compare midsize pickups using with Autoblog’s car research tool

To briefly handicap the field: I feel that the Taco is gutsy and looks the part, which I love. The GM midsizers are actually quite large – it feels like you’re getting almost as much truck as the Silverado and Sierra. The Ranger and Jeep remain question marks as far as driving character, though not totally for us. Where does Honda fit in? It’s the approachable and balanced option. If you’re undecided between a pickup and crossover, you will still feel comfortable in the Ridgeline.

The design is little boring:

OK, the elephant in the room is the Ridgeline isn’t the most exciting pickup. It’s not an off-road beast. There’s no long enthusiast backstory. The design is attractive, but forgettable. The Accord and Civic are arguably the best-looking cars in their segments – they certainly turn heads with their creased styling and snazzy headlights. I’d like to see Honda move the Ridgeline in that direction. Make it more of a design statement, like its car brethren. Maybe position it as the premium player in this segment, sort of like the Mercedes X-Class would be (if Benz decided to bring it here).

Still, vanilla can be good, and the Ridgeline wins by being very solid in many areas. Even though I was hogging this truck for a good chunk of the winter, Autoblog editors have been liking our Honda pickup during its initial weeks in our garage. It’s a long-termer that’s always in demand, and this spring it will undoubtedly be used for camping, kayaking, baseball tailgates and more. Like I said: The Ridgeline is up for anything.

Transcending pickup-truck tropes, the Ridgeline tosses tradition to the wind with unconventional comfort and ingenious features. Looking for a quintessential crossover? It has a comfortable cabin and refined road manners. Yet its towing capability and its innovative cargo box, which has an in-bed trunk as well as an available audio system, exploit and enhance truck tradition. A speedy 280-hp V-6 and six-speed automatic transmission comprise the sole powertrain; front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is optional. Honda’s pickup not only compares with class competitors, it excels with exclusively available features such as automated emergency braking and adaptive cruise control. Although it’s only built as a crew cab with a 5.3-foot bed, the Ridgeline caters to and satisfies a wider society than its rivals—a key reason it was named one of our 2017 10Best Trucks and SUVs. The second-generation Honda Ridgeline pickup, our 10Best-winning mid-size pickup, is entering its second model year with only a modicum of changes. Honda has simplified the 2018 Ridgeline lineup (Ridgelineup?) with fewer trim levels, added new color choices, and increased the price by $ 150 to $ 155.

–

The least expensive Ridgeline remains the RT, which now starts at $ 30,570 with front-wheel drive. Honda has gotten rid of the all-wheel-drive option for the RT, and also eliminated the one-step-up RTS trim level. So, to get all-wheel drive on the 2018 Ridgeline, you now have to pony up for the $ 34,110 Sport model and add the $ 1900 AWD option. While the Sport previously took a page from the Ford Model T’s book by being available in any color as long as it’s black, Honda now offers the Ridgeline Sport in two additional greyscale hues: White Diamond Pearl and Lunar Silver Metallic.

–

–

Other than the slight price increases, the Ridgeline’s other trim levels—RTL, RTL-T, RTL-E, and Black Edition—stay the same for the new model year. The fully loaded RTL-E and Black Edition models remain AWD-only, and now cost $ 42,560 and $ 44,060, respectively. According to Honda, all these mildly updated 2018 Ridgelines start reaching dealerships tomorrow.

The only vehicle-segment descriptor in the automotive market that might be more amorphous than “crossover” is “mid-size pickup.” The mere mention of it has our own Don Sherman furiously scribbling numbers on scraps of paper, wild eyed and sweating. “There’s no such thing,” he growls. And, we must admit, he’s kind of right. Not about the temperature in the office. He’s dead wrong about that. But “mid-size pickup” assumes that there is something bigger and something smaller, between which this middle-size thing fits. There is no smaller class of pickup, though. And every Chevrolet Colorado, Sherman’s handwritten notes attest, exceeds the length of the shortest Silverado. What does it all mean, other than that we need to arrange a remote office for Sherman? It’s the GMC Canyon Denali and the Honda Ridgeline in a battle of the small pickups (GM) https://briefnews.eu/its-the-gmc-canyon-denali-and-the-honda-ridgeline-in-a-battle-of-the-small-pickups-gm/ https://briefnews.eu/its-the-gmc-canyon-denali-and-the-honda-ridgeline-in-a-battle-of-the-small-pickups-gm/#respond Sun, 30 Apr 2017 18:30:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/its-the-gmc-canyon-denali-and-the-honda-ridgeline-in-a-battle-of-the-small-pickups-gm/ Ridegline Canyon11.JPGMatthew DeBord/BI

Small pickups were once an essential part of the truck mix. A lot of young folks enjoyed them as an inexpensive starter vehicle.

But gradually, automakers phased them out in favor of crossover SUVs while concentrating on the full-size pickups that are their most profitable products.

In the past few years, however, smaller pickups — bigger than the modest Ford Rangers and Chevy S-10s of the past — have staged a comeback.

For US carmakers, Chevy’s Colorado almost single-handedly revived the segment, which had been filled by trucks like the Toyota Tacoma and the Nissan Frontier. Soon, Ford will bring back the Ranger.

Of course, Honda has long had a small pickup in its lineup: the oddball Ridgeline. This wasn’t a truck for truck people. It was more of an SUV with a pickup truck bed.Ridegline Canyon17.JPG

The styling was offbeat. But for the latest generation, perhaps sensing that small pickups are the comeback trail, Honda made the Ridgeline into more of a proper truck. We checked it out last year and were impressed.

So we thought it would be good to compare the new Ridgeline to more of a true pickup.

And then the GMC Canyon Denali landed in our driveway.

The Canyon Denali is the GMC version of the Chevy Colorado, given some further snazziness with the upscale Denali treatment.

On paper, it stacks up well against the Ridgeline, costing about the same and running a similar V6 engine. But there are some crucial differences:

The 2017 Canyon Denali arrived early in the year, during a respite from snow and ice, but before the weather warmed. Truck conditions! Price? $ 44,255, as tested. The base GMC Canyon, without the upmarket Denali trim features, is about $ 22,000.

Matthew DeBord/BI

The Canyon Denali is outfitted with a 3.6-liter V6 that makes just north of 300 horsepower and pipes the power to, in the case of our tester, an all-wheel-drive system through an eight speed automatic transmission.

The motor feels robust and quite trucky, which is to say a tad crude (the same engine is found in the Cadillac XT5 and comes off as much more refined). This is powerplant that can roar. The Canyon Denali also has a towing mode that can handle 7,000 pounds, about 2,000 more than what the Ridgeline is rated for.

Our 2017 Ridgeline tester tipped the cost scales at $ 41,370, and it landed at BI’s suburban New Jersey test center after a light winter snowstorm in late 2016. The base pickup is about $ 30,000.

Matthew DeBord/BI

Read the review here.

The Ridgeline delivers a peppier, smoother ride than the Canyon Denali — much more car-like, which makes sense give its fully independent suspension. You just don’t feel like you’re in a truck, which for a lot of buyers will be a good thing. A problem with pickups in daily use is that they can beat you up a bit.

The Rideline’s powerplant is a 3.5-liter, 280-horsepower V6. This is one of the world’s great motors, perhaps the best V6 anywhere. Mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, this engine is more or less perfect and provides 21 mpg in combined city/highway driving. That’s slightly better than the GMC’s 21 mpg combined.

Our Canyon Denali was a crew-cab version with a “short box” — the bed is about five feet long, protected by a bedliner. If you’re shopping for a Chevy truck, this vehicle can be had as the Colorado.
