Sunday’s American Gods finale will find Shadow Moon holding an extremely physically taxing vigil for his dead father Mr. Wednesday, who also happens to be the Norse deity Odin. There’s no assurance that Shadow, whose mother was a Black woman with no celestial powers to speak of, will even make it through the nine-day ordeal. And then there’s the orisha, aka the Yoruba spirits who have literally danced through Shadow’s dreams and visions this season. What part might they play in our protagonist’s fate?

To truly understand, says Nick Gillie, one of the series’ writers, you have to step back and take a god’s eye view of the season as a whole.

Gillie joined the series after showrunner Charles “Chic” Eglee attended Goddess Black, Gillie’s one-man stage show. He wound up helping to weave the orisha storyline throughout Season 3. “My stage piece is about the mythology of western culture as it relates to the collective soul force,” Gillies says. And when he came to the writers’ room, he found a bunch of people who were experts on Neil Gaiman’s book and the mythology it contains. “What I brought is a mythology of what the American godhead is. The Declaration of Independence talks about an equality of humanity,” he says. “It doesn’t mention this specifically, obviously. But regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, whatever it is: We have a collective equality, and that’s the ‘we.’”

As an example, Gillies points out that the concept of a unifying “we” allowed slaves to survive under crushing work demands in the American south. “So that was what I brought to the show in terms of the ‘we’ soul force, and that became an ideal that all of the characters are now working towards,” he says. “That became a balance against this individualistic ideal that Odin represents.”

american-gods-season-3-finale-ricky-whittle-interview-orishaIn American Gods, the “we” concept manifests as the orisha known as Chango (played by Wale), Aye (Karen Glave), Oshun (Herizen F. Guardiola) and Yemoja (Bridge Ogundipe). Traditionally sent to guide humanity, the four spiritual chaperones are “trying to bring Shadow into the same fold, the same idea of ‘we are all connected,’” Gillie adds. “And there is a spiritual unity of great power that we have access to.”

As we’ve seen, the orisha have their work cut out for them. Season 3 has witnessed Shadow both trying to distance himself from a manipulative Mr. Wednesday and growing more comfortable with his own status (and, perhaps, power?) as a demigod. During a writers’ room visit before the season began, series star Ricky Whittle recalls, Gillie “sat me down and explained exactly the power and the culture and where we were going to go with this season. The story thread, the history and the information and knowledge that he had has been so helpful and so powerful.”

Whittle adds: “I knew when I was making it, it was so powerful and deep. And it really was a pleasure to put out such a strong message.” He laughs. “You know, American Gods certainly is a show that never shies away from sensitive topics. Never more so than now.”

Along those lines: Between Season 2 and 3, the series made entertainment news after former cast member Orlando Jones announced he had been fired, claiming that Eglee thought the character of Mr. Nancy sent “the wrong message” to “Black America.” The series released a statement saying that Jones’ contract had not been renewed “because Mr. Nancy, among other characters, is not featured in the portion of the book we are focusing on within Season 3” and asserted that American Gods is “one of the most diverse series on television.” In addition, a rep for Eglee called Jones’ comments “inaccurate on so many levels, from the macro to the micro.”

Gillie maintains that the show’s focus on Shadow and Bilquis, via the orisha, this season is not a response to Jones’ criticism. “No, it wasn’t related,” he says. “I know the show seems now, after 2020 has happened and George Floyd was choked to death in broad daylight by the police, it seems that the show was made for 2021. But for me, I was writing this [type of thing] in 2008.”

american-gods-season-3-finale-ricky-whittle-interview-orishaNow, back to the finale. In addition to Shadow’s grueling post-mortem task, we’ll see a newly reenergized Bilquis take definite steps toward a new goal — a path series star Yetide Badaki says her character wouldn’t be on without the help of the orisha.

“As we learn more about ourselves, we learn more about our history, the more we learn about our culture. All of these things help us to step into our power,” she tells TVLine. And while Bilquis is hailed as the show’s resident love goddess, “There are many sides to her. The more she recognizes each side, the more whole she becomes. The more whole she becomes, the more empowered she becomes. And then the more empowered she becomes, the more she is able to help and affect the events around her.”

Gillies is quick to point out that, unlike other otherworldly characters like Mr. Wednesday or the New God Mr. World, the orisha “are not so interested in forcing a human to do or learn a thing. They’re just guiding you in the path of learning. So therefore, part of their philosophy is: You’re never a total victim. There’s always a part that you play, if not in the cause of your trauma, then in continuing it and embracing it.”

So when Shadow climbs up onto that tree in Sunday’s episode to endure whatever the gods can throw at him, he’s actively trying to repair past hurts and become someone he isn’t. Or, as Gillie says, “It’s not just Odin that’s seducing Shadow… Shadow is seducing Shadow, and the orisha are trying to show him that… [They’re] reminding him: What do you really want to be here?”

“We get into a little bit of it in season two, but we’ll definitely explore it more in further seasons.”

Alongside the passionate affair between series leads Mel Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson), Lizzie and Ricky’s young love was a highlight for many viewers this season.

The series showrunner confirmed their romance will continue despite their traumatising attempt to take their relationship to the next level in this year’s penultimate episode.

In episode eight, the couple shared an intimate moment and admitted to each other they were both virgins.

The One Show: ‘Let’s not!’ Alex Jones hits back at Ricky Gervais in AWKWARD debate https://briefnews.eu/the-one-show-lets-not-alex-jones-hits-back-at-ricky-gervais-in-awkward-debate/ https://briefnews.eu/the-one-show-lets-not-alex-jones-hits-back-at-ricky-gervais-in-awkward-debate/#respond Tue, 05 Mar 2019 14:31:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-one-show-lets-not-alex-jones-hits-back-at-ricky-gervais-in-awkward-debate/

Alex, 41, and The One Show co-host Matt Baker, 41, were joined by Ricky, 57, and actress Kerry Godliman, 45, ahead of the release of the comedian’s new Netflix series, After Life.

As well as interviewing the guests on the BBC magazine programme, Alex and Matt also discussed some of the segments which were included throughout the show.

However, it was after one particular segment, highlighting the importance of keeping diary entries which saw Alex and Ricky offer a difference in opinion.

Following the revelation Ricky made he had never kept a diary in his life, he quizzed Afterlife co-star Kerry and the presenters why someone would want to write down their memories.

Following the pre-recorded segment and before interviewing the guests about their new Netflix series, Alex commented: “Yeah, we don’t know how we’d feel about our diaries being on display.

“I’d die if my diaries were in…anyway, never mind,” the host added, before Ricky made his revelation: “I’ve never kept a diary.

“Why would you keep a diary? Who you trying to remind of stuff?” the comedian asked, to which Alex replied: “Yourself.”

Seemingly dismayed by Alex’s answer, Ricky said: “Really. Who cares?” to which Alex then remarked: “Let’s not get into it Ricky.”

Matt took over from his co-host to introduce the discussion on After Life, with Ricky giggling away at the response to his diary revelation and the debate which ensued.

The Netflix series, which begins streaming Friday 8, sees Ricky’s character Tony struggle to come to terms with the death of his wife played by Kerry.

Speaking about the premise of the show, Ricky said the series was the show he had most enjoyed being a part of throughout his career.

“It’s the most honest I think and that’s what you want to do as an artist,” the comedian began.

“You just want to be as open and honest as you can as you get older, that’s the one thing you can do and this is someone’s greatest fear.

“He loses the love of his life and it’s about is life still worth living, it’s a really big question and I think the comedy comes from, the audience living vicariously through his sort of anger.

“It’s liberating. He suddenly starts thinking, ‘I don’t care, I can tell people exactly what I think of them.”

Ricky continued, referring to the premise of the series: “He’s trying to make himself feel better, but it doesn’t work quite like that.”

Last week, former Strictly Come Dancing champion Ore Oduba, 33, stepped in as co-hots of the show as Matt took a break from the programme on Friday.

Ore and Alex were joined by All Together Now hosts Geri Horner, 46, and Rob Beckett, 33, but before speaking with them, the presenters paid tribute to Saint David’s Day.

Wanting Ore to wish the audience a Happy Saint David’s Day in the Welsh dialect, Alex told her co-host: “Now, remember what we went through downstairs. Are you ready?” with the presenter giving his best shot at the phrase.

Commenting on Ore’s attempt at the Welsh language, Alex said: “I mean nearly, good effort,” before adding: “Urgh yeah, it was alright.”

The One Show airs weeknights at 7pm on BBC One.

Ricky Jay, Famed Character Actor and Master Magician, Has Died at 72 https://briefnews.eu/ricky-jay-famed-character-actor-and-master-magician-has-died-at-72/ https://briefnews.eu/ricky-jay-famed-character-actor-and-master-magician-has-died-at-72/#respond Sun, 25 Nov 2018 17:54:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ricky-jay-famed-character-actor-and-master-magician-has-died-at-72/ Ricky Jay Dead

Ricky Jay is one of those actors who you’d see popping up in the likes of The Prestige, Mystery Men and Boogie Nights, not a household name, but surely one of those people who made audience members go, “Hey, it’s that guy.” But outside of his career on film and television, Ricky Jay was a masterful magician, dubbed “the most gifted sleight of hand artist alive” by The New Yorker. Sadly, Jay has performed his last trick, as the character actor and illusionist has died at age 72.

News of Ricky Jay dead has been confirmed by the actor’s attorney Stan Coleman (via Deadline) after the actor died of natural causes on Saturday in Los Angeles. Jay’s manager also confirmed the news and added, “He was one of a kind. We will never see the likes of him again.”

Indeed, Ricky Jay was truly a unique talent. The man’s work as a character actor can’t go unnoticed with appearances in Tomorrow Never Dies, State and Main, The Great Buck Howard, not to mention the shows Deadwood and The X-Files under his belt. Perhaps one of his most memorable performances comes from his voiceover in the opening of Magnolia:

However, other work for the big screen included being a consultant when it came to the cons, tricks and magic of The Prestige, The Illusionist, Ocean’s 13, Heist, Sneakers and more. He even formed a company with collaborator Michael Weber called Deceptive Practices to better offer their expertise to film productions, including creating the wheelchair that kept Gary Sinise’s legs hidden in Forrest Gump. That’s because Ricky Jay is first and foremost, one of the most revered magicians in the world.

Ricky Jay dazzled people with his tricks. A fascinating profile from The New Yorker recalls this particular instance when Jay wowed a New Year’s Eve party with a mind-blowing trick:

“Deborah Baron, a screenwriter in Los Angeles, where Jay lives, once invited him to a New Year’s Eve dinner party at her home. About a dozen other people attended. Well past midnight, everyone gathered around a coffee table as Jay, at Baron’s request, did closeup card magic. When he had performed several dazzling illusions and seemed ready to retire, a guest named Mort said, “Come on, Ricky. Why don’t you do something truly amazing?”

Baron recalls that at that moment “the look in Ricky’s eyes was, like, ‘Mort—you have just fucked with the wrong person.’ ”

Jay told Mort to name a card, any card. Mort said, “The three of hearts.” After shuffling, Jay gripped the deck in the palm of his right hand and sprung it, cascading all fifty-two cards so that they travelled the length of the table and pelted an open wine bottle.

“O.K., Mort, what was your card again?”

“The three of hearts.”

“Look inside the bottle.”

Mort discovered, curled inside the neck, the three of hearts. The party broke up immediately.”

Ricky Jay’s tricks were front and center in three one-man shows, Ricky Jay and His 52 Assistants, Ricky Jay: On the Stem, and Ricky Jay: A Rogue’s Gallery, all of which were directed by filmmaker, author and playwright David Mamet. You can even watch one that was turned into an HBO special right here:

In fact, Mamet featured Jay in several of his films, including House of Games, The Spanish Prisoner, Things Change, Redbelt and State and Main. Having worked on The Spanish Prisoner, fellow magic aficionado and actor Steve Martin said, “I sort of think of Ricky as the intellectual élite of magicians. He’s expertly able to perform and yet he knows the theory, history, literature of the field.”

If you’d like to learn more about Ricky Jay’s incredible skills as a magician, check out the 2012 documentary Deceptive Practice: The Mysteries and Mentors of Ricky Jay. You’ll see that Jay was truly a treasure, and there wasn’t really anybody quite like him working in Hollywood today.

Our thoughts go out to his family and friend during this difficult time. Rest in peace.

Magician Ricky Jay Dead at 70 https://briefnews.eu/magician-ricky-jay-dead-at-70/ https://briefnews.eu/magician-ricky-jay-dead-at-70/#respond Sun, 25 Nov 2018 05:05:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/magician-ricky-jay-dead-at-70/ Master magician Ricky Jay, whose decades-long career included guest roles on Deadwood and The Simpsons, has died at the age of 70.

The news was confirmed by his manager, Winston Simone, who told Variety that his client died of natural causes. “He was one of a kind,” Simone said. “We will never see the likes of him again.”

A New Yorker profile once referred to Jay as “perhaps the most gifted sleight-of-hand artist alive.” His one-man Broadway show, Ricky Jay and His 52 Assistants, was filmed for HBO by acclaimed director David Mamet in 1996. He appeared in many of Mamet’s films, including House of Games, The Spanish Prisoner, Things Change, Redbelt and State and Main. Additional film credits included Magnolia, Boogie Nights and Tomorrow Never Dies.

Jay’s TV credits included a recurring role on Deadwood, on which he played card shark Eddie Sawyer. He also appeared on episodes of The Simpsons (playing himself), The X Files, The Unit, Flashforward, Getting On, Kidnapped, Lie to Me and Simon & Simon.

In addition to his acting credits, Jay was a frequent late-night talk show guest. He appeared on The Tonight Show with hosts Johnny Carson, Jay Leno and Jimmy Fallon, as well as The Late Show With David Letterman and Late Night With Conan O’Brien.

Jay also worked as a film consultant, lending his technical expertise to such titles as Forrest Gump, The Illusionist and The Prestige. In 2012, he was the subject of the documentary Deceptive Practice: The Mysteries and Mentors of Ricky Jay.

Ricky Ray's scary incident overshadows Argos loss to Stampeders https://briefnews.eu/ricky-rays-scary-incident-overshadows-argos-loss-to-stampeders/ https://briefnews.eu/ricky-rays-scary-incident-overshadows-argos-loss-to-stampeders/#respond Sun, 24 Jun 2018 06:18:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ricky-rays-scary-incident-overshadows-argos-loss-to-stampeders/

Argonauts quarterback Ricky Ray was carted off the field in the third quarter of the Toronto's home opener against the Calgary Stampeders on Saturday.

The Stampeders went on to rout the Argonauts in a lopsided Grey Cup rematch.

Bo Levi Mitchell threw three touchdown passes as Calgary embarrassed Toronto 41-7 at BMO Field in the first meeting between the two teams since the Argonauts' 27-24 Grey Cup win in November. Mitchell improved his career regular-season record against the Double Blue to 9-0 while guiding the Stampeders to their ninth consecutive regular-season victory over the defending CFL champions.

"I would've thought about it more if it was Game 1 of the season, more like Ottawa two years ago and we had to play them twice," said Mitchell. "To me, you're thinking about Hamilton all off-season, all training camp, so to me it kind of lost that lustre of it.

"It was just us going out there and beating a football team today."

Ray received on-field medical treatment after being sandwiched between two Stampeders defenders before going on a backboard then a stretcher with his neck immobilized and leaving on a cart following roughly a 20-minute delay. He was transported to Toronto Western Hospital.

Toronto Argonauts quarterback Ricky Ray was carted off the field after taking a hit to the head. 1:44

"He'll get an MRI and those type of things, but I'm encouraged by what the doctors had to say," Toronto head coach Marc Trestman said. "But I'm not a doctor so we'll have to wait until the medical information is in, but I'm going to be optimistic at this point."

Calgary head coach Dave Dickenson echoed those sentiments.

"I've been told it was a bit more precautionary and I'm glad our people do that," Dickenson said. "I like Ricky, always have … and didn't like seeing that.

"It was a hard-fought game, things can happen but fingers crossed. I believe he'll bounce back, we'll see what happens."

Ray, who could be seen moving his fingers, finished 12-of-17 passing for 74 yards. He was replaced by James Franklin, who scored Toronto's lone TD on a 10-yard run at 9:11 of the fourth.

"It's always scary to see a guy you've played with for six years take a hit like that," said veteran Argos tackle Chris Van Zeyl. "And then see him hurt, my heart was broken.

"It makes you question a lot of things."

It was the first meeting between the two teams since the Argonauts' 27-24 Grey Cup win in November. Mitchell improved his career regular-season record against the Double Blue to 9-0 while guiding the Stampeders to their ninth consecutive regular-season victory over the defending CFL champions.

The Calgary pivot improved his career regular-season record to 58-10-2 and is 27-3-2 versus East Division teams. Rookie running back Don Jackson also ran for 123 yards on nine carries while Eric Rogers registered five catches for 131 yards and two TDs.

Mitchell finished 20-of-22 passing for 324 yards with the three TDs before giving way to Nick Arbuckle in the fourth.

Netflix has ordered a new series called After Life from Ricky Gervais, Variety reports. It centers on a man named Tony, played by Gervais, whose wife dies unexpectedly. Tony initially considers suicide but then decides he’ll live his life saying and doing whatever he pleases, no matter the consequences. He chooses to do this as a way to punish the world but finds it becomes difficult as family and friends try to fix him and bring back the nice guy they once knew.

Gervais and Netflix have worked together before. The streaming service bought Gervais’ Derek as well as two comedy specials, the first of which, Humanity, debuted in March.

Gervais will produce and direct After Life. Netflix has ordered six half-hour episodes.

After contemplating taking his own life, he decides instead to live long enough to punish the world by saying and doing whatever he likes from now on. EastEnders spoilers: Game of Thrones actor Ricky Champ to join cast as Halfway’s brother https://briefnews.eu/eastenders-spoilers-game-of-thrones-actor-ricky-champ-to-join-cast-as-halfways-brother/ https://briefnews.eu/eastenders-spoilers-game-of-thrones-actor-ricky-champ-to-join-cast-as-halfways-brother/#respond Thu, 29 Mar 2018 01:35:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/eastenders-spoilers-game-of-thrones-actor-ricky-champ-to-join-cast-as-halfways-brother/

EastEnders fans will see a brand new face in Walford as BBC producers have signed up Game of Thrones  actor Ricky Champ to play Callum “Halfway” Highway’s (played by Tony Clay) older brother Stuart.

Ricky, who played Gatins, a member of Brotherhood Without Banners, in fantasy series, is set to cause trouble for pub landlord Mick Carter (Dany Dyer).

A mischievous Stuart is going to lead his old friend Mick astray, as the pair will get up to no good together.

Stuart will make his appearance on our screens this spring when his sibling Halfway returns to Albert Square after being called back to the army last month.

“I’m so happy to be part of this brilliant team of people on this great show that I grew up watching,” Ricky said of his new role as Stuart.

“Look out Albert Square – Stuart’s coming!” he said in an interview with the Metro.

Meanwhile, Halfway comeback means good news for Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty), as the pair had embarked on a romance before his departure.

Speaking about reprising his role as Halfway, Tony said: “I’m really happy and excited to be back on EastEnders and working with such a brilliant cast and crew.”

“Halfway is such a lovely role to play and I’m really looking forward to exploring his story further and seeing where it takes us,” he told the Daily Star.

An insider also told the publication: “Halfway is a popular character so producers are thrilled to have him back.

“There is a lot planned for him that viewers are going to love.”

A spokesperson for EastEnders said: “Tony Clay will be reprising his role later this spring when the character returns to the Square.”

Halfway was involved in the botched New Year’s heist job, which saw him accidentally shoot Mick.

Despite this, he was welcomed into the family because of his connection to Mick’s son Lee (Danny-Boy Hatchard).

Halfway also ended up making an impression on Whitney and romance soon blossomed between the pair.

But their relationship was halted when Halfway suddenly had to leave to return back to the army.

Halfway has since reappeared over a video link, chatting to Whitney as the pair kept in touch.

When the Carter’s almost lost their home because of gangster Aidan Maguire (Patrick Bergin), Halfway was on hand to help.

Halfway had taken a ring from the heist job and Mick then pawned the jewellery to come up with the cash to appease the crime boss.

EastEnders continues tonight at 7.30pm on BBC One.

Ashes: Joe Root hits back at Ricky Ponting after captaincy slam https://briefnews.eu/ashes-joe-root-hits-back-at-ricky-ponting-after-captaincy-slam/ https://briefnews.eu/ashes-joe-root-hits-back-at-ricky-ponting-after-captaincy-slam/#respond Mon, 25 Dec 2017 11:07:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ashes-joe-root-hits-back-at-ricky-ponting-after-captaincy-slam/

The England skipper, who named one change for the Boxing Day Test handing Tom Curran a debut in place of the injured Craig Overton, was labelled as “soft” by the Australian legend earlier this week.

But Root brushed off the barbs on the eve of the Boxing Day showpiece saying that Ponting neither knows him well enough nor see how he operates in the England dressing room.

“He’s entitled to his opinion, but he doesn’t spend any time in our dressing room. He doesn’t spend much time around the squad. I’m obviously going to disagree with that,” said Root.

“If you ask any of the guys in the camp, any of the coaches and the support staff, they’d back me up as well. I don’t think I go about things as a ‘little boy’, that’s for sure. I have my own way of doing things.

“It’s important that you don’t try to be something that you are not. I know there are occasions when you have to be strong in front of the whole group. I might not appear to do that out on the field but there are times when I do that and times I have done that.”

Root admitted it was a “close call” between Curran and Mason Crane to make a debut in place of Overton who was ruled out of the fourth Test with a cracked rib.

But he is confident the Surrey fast bowler will bring the same competitive edge to proceedings as Overton.

“Tom offers a lot – he’s a real competitor. Similar work ethic, and the way he goes about things is very similar to Craig,” said the England skipper. “He’s always wanting to get in the contest and you know that he will give everything and he’s skilful.

“He’s a feisty character, and he gets the ball to move around a bit. He’s always in the contest and that stands out. At no point will he hide away from any challenge.

“If times become hard he will give it everything and it’s a great chance for him.

Root added: “It wasn’t an easy decision. Had a little while thinking about it, and weighing up what was the best way to go on this surface and these conditions. But for the balance of the team, Tom was the best option.”

Curran took five wickets and hit an unbeaten 77 in the tour match against Cricket Australia XI in Perth and it is his lower order contribution as much as his bowling which has got him the nod over Crane.

But he will have his work cut out on a MCG wicket that most are predicting will offer little reward to bowlers and plenty to batsmen.

Root said: “It looks slow, and dry towards the back end. The Shield games have been high scoring and batter friendly.
