The One Show welcomed Anneka Rice on to the programme today to discuss her career as it’s coming up to be 25 years since she changed people’s lives on Treasure Hunt and Challenge Anneka. Today’s hosts, Emma Willis and Matt Baker, were on hand to tease who was coming up on the show and the former even had an Eighties style shirt as a clue. Of course, the answer could only be Anneka and as she walked out of the studio, she pointed at the violet outfit and said: “Where on Earth did you find that?” Emma seemed pretty keen on it and admitted she was rather fond of the garish shirt. The presenter giggled, while clutching on to the outfit: “I have to say, I quite like it!” Anneka wondered if the show could have gone even further out to celebrate her appearance on television. She laughed: “The least you could have done is all dress up…” Matt chucked: “Well, that’s true.” The One Show celebrated Anneka’s incredible career and even welcomed some faces from her past there to surprise her. Emma and Matt decided to play a game on Anneka, and told her she had 30 seconds to explore the studio and see if she could find the mystery clue waiting for her. After a frantic half of a minute, she ran around the back of the set and discovered Dave the sandman, who she used to work with on Challenge Anneka. She let out a scream as the good friends shared a friendly embrace. Meanwhile, The One Show viewers were loving Anneka on the BBC One stalwart and flocked to Twitter to share their thoughts. One said: “Is Anneka Rice a dame? If not she bloody should be. She is just so cool and lovely.” Another added: “Anneka Rice hasn’t aged a day! I want whatever shes been taking! She looks smashing for 60!” A third praised: “Anneka Rice has not changed much in the past 30 odd years! She still looks the same!” Last week on The One Show, Paddy McGuiness suffered an awkward gaffe live on air. Matt and Emma welcomed the Top Gear hosts on to the show, but Paddy couldn’t get himself out of the flashy vehicle he’d arrived in. Matt exclaimed: “Paddy is stuck! He can’t get out!” The One Show airs weekdays on BBC One at 7pm. America may see an interesting female showdown as a spin-off of the Brett Kavanaugh saga. Susan Rice and Sarah Palin hinted they may run against Sens. Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski, who voted in a way they deem unacceptable. The soap opera begins with Susan Collins (R-ME), who was initially sitting on the fence when it came to whether she would vote in favor of the Supreme Court nomination of Kavanaugh. This invited some of Kavanaugh’s fiercest critics to put pressure on her to vote against his confirmation – pressure which Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) called “vicious, vile, and dangerous actions.” Collins finally put an end to the speculation on Friday, announcing in a 44-minute speech that she would be backing Kavanaugh. But Susan Collins’ decision angered another Susan by the name of Susan Rice (who served as national security adviser under Barack Obama). Rice’s discontent was revealed following a tweet by Jen Psaki, who served as Obama’s communications director. “Who wants to run for Senate in Maine?” she tweeted. It took Rice 11 minutes to respond with “me.” She later clarified that she was not making any announcements, but stressed that she is “deeply disappointed in Senator Collins’ vote for Kavanaugh.” However, Rice isn’t without her own controversies. For starters, she was serving as national security adviser when the Benghazi attack happened in 2012, which resulted in the killing of four Americans. Republican lawmakers have accused her of underplaying the attack as a random act of violence in response to an anti-Muslim film. However, Obama admitted it was premeditated. She has also been accused of revealing the names of associates of Donald Trump that appeared in intelligence reports last year. And as with just about anything these days, the internet weighed in on the possibility of Rice running against Collins, with many immediately pledging their support. Susan Rice is corrupt and would be fully exposed during an election!! — MHammer (@MarkHvette08) October 6, 2018 Does Susan Rice think she can make her record clean by then? How will she seal up everything like Obama did. — LadyK (@getcommoncents) October 6, 2018 But just as Rice is unhappy with Collins for promising to vote in favor of Kavanaugh, former vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin is mad at Sen. Lisa Murkowski – a Republican from Palin’s home state of Alaska – for crossing party lines and announcing that she will be voting ‘no’ when it comes to Kavanaugh’s confirmation. Palin tweeted directly at Murkowski, saying: “Hey @LisaMurkowski – I can see 2022 from my house…” That tweet wasn’t without a dose of humor, as it stems from Tina Fey’s remarkable impression of Palin on Saturday Night Live in which Fey delivered the line “I can see Russia from my house” when talking about foreign policy on the show. While Palin never actually muttered those words, she’s often credited with doing so. Palin’s tweet came one day after she had urged Murkowski to “do the right thing” when it comes to Kavanaugh. The former Alaska governor, who ran as vice president on the McCain ticket in 2008, was often mocked for her statements during her run, and long after. Some of her most famous gems include stating that America needs to stand with its North Korean allies and declaring that gun-free zones amount to “stupid on steroids.” She also said that the world looks at Russian President Vladimir Putin as someone who “wrestles bears,” while Obama was looked at as someone who “wears mom jeans.” And, of course, the Twittersphere had a few things to say about Palin’s tweet, with responses ranging from eager support to laughs and criticism. Poor or rich. Educated or not. Rock or pop. Researchers are constantly trying to divide China into helpful categories to explain patterns and proclivities. But when Yang Hu, a sociologist at the University of Essex in England, delved into views on sexual behavior he found a novel divide:
It goes both ways
People who live in China’s rice-growing provinces are 33 percent more likely to approve of premarital sex than those in wheat-growing areas.
Much has been written about the sexual revolution in China. In surveys from 1989, only 15 percent of respondents said they’d had sex before marriage. Five years later, that figure was up to 40 percent; by 2012, 71 percent. When researchers put this rapid change in behavior into a national context, it was often framed as an urban-rural split. And the usual explanations were trotted out: Western influence and/or economic development.
Yet Hu found something unexpected when he looked at the 2010 China General Social Survey of more than 11,000 people across 30 Chinese provinces. Views on premarital sex and homosexuality — both considered “nontraditional” sexual practices — couldn’t be fully explained by factors such as income or Western influence when controlled for other individual criteria like age. “The recent changes didn’t really explain a large portion of variation in sex ideology across China,” says Hu. Differences in views seemed to fall more along geographic lines, with the south of China having significantly more liberal views than the north.
But Hu didn’t think geography itself was the key factor. It was more about how the surveyed communities made a living. The provinces that traditionally harvested rice were more accepting of premarital sex and homosexuality compared with the seemingly more conservative wheat-growing provinces. For example, only 7 percent of respondents in wheat-growing Xinjiang approved of premarital sex, and just 2 percent gave the nod to homosexuality. In rice-growing Guangdong, by contrast, 54 percent of those surveyed were fine with premarital sex, and 24 percent had a live-and-let-live attitude toward homosexuality.
So, what’s up with crops as predictors of sexual attitudes? As you might expect, some researchers have developed a theory, and it goes like this. Rice harvesting, which requires a larger amount of irrigation than growing wheat, promotes cooperation among workers and increased interdependency. Growing wheat is more manageable with farmers working alone. The need for cooperation in rice-growing regions could lead to a culture of more mutual understanding and tolerance — or at least an awareness of the need to not rock the boat with your neighbors. “The assumption is that if you have to rely on each other for subsistence, you have to be more tolerant of each other,” says Hu.
Thomas Talhelm, a professor of behavioral science at the University of Chicago, has pioneered much of the work around the rice theory. He says its application to explain sexual attitudes makes sense. “I tend to avoid the word ‘cooperation’ because that sounds really fun and nice,” says Talhelm. “It isn’t like being on a basketball team. It’s more like ‘my behavior affects other people, so I have to be careful.’” What he noticed anecdotally from his time in China, and later through research, was the conflict avoidance of residents in rice-growing areas. “You don’t swing your elbows as much,” he says. In fact, in one of Talhelm’s inventive experiments, he studied whether Chinese Starbucks patrons from different regions were willing to move chairs placed in their paths.
In a way, explains Hu, wheat growers are more individualistic. Not in an ideological sense, but in how they can afford to make enemies by judging the behavior of others — especially if that behavior occurs behind closed doors.
But wait, what about wheat-growing regions of Europe or North America? Shouldn’t they be more sexually conservative than Asia rather than the other way around? Hu says the rice theory, and the accompanying pressures of subsistence farming, is only one explanation for culture. Other, more powerful factors, including religion, can override economic forces.
Hu says he isn’t sure how long cultural differences between rice- and wheat-growing regions will last. He’s hesitant to speak about the topic without data. But he speculates that eventually there might be a convergence in attitudes. For one, access to media and its content are becoming more standardized across the country.
You might call it a monoculture.

You didn’t think scientists would let IBM’s “world’s smallest computer” boast go unchallenged, did you? Sure enough, University of Michigan has produced a temperature sensing ‘computer’ measuring 0.04 cubic millimeters, or about a tenth the size of IBM’s former record-setter. It’s so small that one grain of rice seems gigantic in comparison — and it’s so sensitive that its transmission LED could instigate currents in its circuits.
The size limitations forced researchers to get creative to reduce the effect of light. They switched from diodes to switched capacitors, and had to fight the relative increase in electrical noise that comes from running on a device that uses so little power.
The result is a sensor that can measure changes in extremely small regions, like a group of cells in your body. Scientists have suspected that tumors are slightly hotter than healthy tissue, but it’s been difficult to verify this until now. The minuscule device could both check this claim and, if it proves true, gauge the effectiveness of cancer treatments. The team also envisions this helping to diagnose glaucoma from inside the eye, monitor biochemical processes and even study tiny snails.
Why the air quotes around computer, then? The tiny size is leading the University to question what a computer is. This does have a full-fledged processor (based on an ARM Cortex-M0+ design), but it loses all data when it loses power, just like IBM’s device. That might be a deal-breaker for people who expect a computer to be more complete. Still, this pushes the limits of computing power and suggests that nearly invisible computing may be relatively commonplace before long.

Last year’s series of Strictly Come Dancing saw 59-year-old magician’s assistant and television personality Debbie McGee wow audiences and judges with her incredible skills on the dance floor alongside her professional partner Giovanni Pernice.
Now presenter Anneka Rice, also 59, has signed up with a similar hope for success, according to a source.
The legendary children’s TV star is said to have met with producers at the BBC’s London studios following contact from bosses at the show.
The Sun’s show insider claimed that the Challenge Anneka host would be an exciting draw for viewers and would appeal to those who cheered on Debbie through the competition, despite Holby City actor Joe McFadden ultimately winning the Glitterball trophy.
A source said: “Bookers are very keen to get Anneka and know she would be a huge signing.
“After Debbie McGee’s popularity last year there is a sense the more mature lady does well and resonates with older viewers.”
While no contestants have been officially confirmed by the show yet, it seems a number of huge personalities are close to signing the dotted line.
“They’re in talks and hoping that she finally says yes,” the source added.
Welsh actress Anneka, whose real name is Anne Lucinda Hartley Rice, made waves in the 80s with her timely figure-hugging jumpsuits and appearances on shows such as Treasure Hunt.
Going on to host Challenge Anneka for five years, the star decided to helm the show once more with an ITV reboot in 2006.
These days, she fronts an arts programme for BBC Radio 2.
Other celebrities in the running to join the UK’s most-watched series includes TV presenter Maya Jama, 23, football pundit Chris Kamara, 60, and Union J singer Josh Cuthbert, 25.
It was recently reported that new judge Shirley Ballas would be returning to the series for a second run this year.
The “Queen of Latin” joined the entertainment programme following former head judge Len Goodman’s exit last season and viewers were divided.
A TV insider said: “Shirley and the BBC wanted to do another series, so everyone’s chuffed they’ve come to an agreement.
“The whole panel is coming back!”
They went on to tell The Sun: “Viewers seemed to like the chemistry between them. It’s all verbally agreed.
“Formal contracts should be signed in the coming days.”
Strictly Come Dancing will return to BBC One later this year.

Condoleezza Rice doesn’t “understand why civilians need to have access to military weapons.” The former Secretary of State’s comments are seemingly at odds with her support for the 2nd Amendment.
Rice, George W Bush’s secretary of state, was speaking to radio host Hugh Hewitt on Friday when she questioned the need for military weapons. “I think it is time to have a conversation about what the right to bear arms means in the modern world,” she said.
“I don’t understand why civilians need to have access to military weapons. We wouldn’t say you can go out and buy a tank,” she added.
Rice’s loyalty to the 2nd Amendment is in some part tied to her childhood in Birmingham, Alabama, which saw her exposed to violence against the black community by the Klu Klux Klan. Recalling how her father and other men in the community protected them at that time, Rice said, “I think it’s a pure version of the second Amendment, as a matter of fact, the right to bear arms.”
“The rights that we have in the Constitution are indivisible,” Rice said. “We can’t throw away the Second Amendment and keep the First.”
While President Donald Trump and the National Rifle Association have called for teachers to be armed in the wake of the Florida school shooting that killed 17, Rice doesn’t think arming teachers with guns is “going to be the answer.”
“I don’t really like the idea, frankly, of a gun in my classroom,” she said. Rice teaches political science at Stanford University.
“Look, if people need to train people to protect our schools, and perhaps even communities want to consider whether or not they need guards to protect the schools, it’s a sad thing to think that we might, then that’s something that we should look at,” she said.
