Yesterday’s episode of the ITV soap saw a menacing figure standing outside the house of the vet (played by Zoe Henry).

It was thought that the shady figure was Pierce Harris (Jonathan Wrather), who has become estranged from his wife following his repeated rape and abuse of her.

However, it turned out that the villain was away in Amsterdam on business with his colleagues and had an alibi that meant it could never have been him.

The revelation left viewers scratching their heads but it was not long before the identity of the mystery stalker was unveiled, which turned out to be Martha (Elaine Claxton), his mother.

She made her first appearance in Emmerdale a couple of months ago as the evil lawyer as Rhona got ready to tie the knot. During those scenes, she hinted that Pierce was harbouring a dark secret in his past that was set to come out.

Now it looks like Martha is well and truly back in the picture as she was seen creeping around Rhona’s house in the dead of night. 

But why is she back in the village and why is she stalking Rhona? Is she trying to protect her rapist son using the most sick and twisted means?

Speaking about the storyline, soap star Jonathan, 48, told Digital Spy: “Pierce’s mother Martha has been introduced and she’s harbouring some secret, but we don’t know to what extent.”

He went on to say: “She’s coming back into the show and she is so charming and so nice. There’s something slightly mysterious about it. We don’t know what her secret is yet.

“It could be something very big – it could be something similar he’s done in the past, or it could be something else.

“So do we believe what Martha said, or do we believe Pierce?”

Emmerdale continues on ITV on Friday at 7pm.

The crafty lawyer (played by Jonathan Wrather) was seen lying through his teeth to the police about his wife (Zoe Henry) regarding the rape allegations.

At one point he said that on their wedding night they had had consensual sex and that any other suggestions were untrue, telling the police: “She was off her face, high as a kite.”

He went on to paint her poor light, describing her as an “addict” and constantly “in and out of rehab”.  

Emmerdale ended with a shaken Rhona revealing to Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt), Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock) and Vanessa Woodfield (Michelle Hardwick) that Pierce had been freed but was not allowed to come near the village.

“Marlon, even if they believe me, it’s not going to be enough to convince a court or the CPS,” she told her friends. 

Will Pierce get away with raping Rhona? Or can the police build a strong case against the abusive and manipulative character?

The scenes come after Rhona finally plucked up the courage to go to the police and report her husband following months of both physical and emotional abuse.

It was also revealed that Rhona went to a sexual assault referral centre following a particularly brutal attack but only chose to lift her anonymity and go to police.  

Many fans of the ITV soap were left fuming at the scenes and took to social media to hit out at Pierce for his brazen lies.

One person posted: “I cannot believe Pierce is trying to say Rhona likes it rough to explain her bruises, I feel sick #emmerdale.”

While someone else wrote on Twitter: “@emmerdale surely if she was “out of her head on drugs” she couldn’t consent anyway. #Emmerdale #Pierce.”

“I am so angry with this Pierce stuff that I am shaking #emmerdale,” added another.

A fourth tweeted: “Pierce you are the lowest of the low. You are not a man, you’re a monster. #emmerdale @emmerdale @itv.”

The violent scenes came under fire from viewers who claimed the drama should have been aired at a later time, with many admitting Rhona’s ordeal was was shown “way too early”. 

“They need to leave those storylines for after 8pm to be honest,” fumed one fan, while another agreed: “Jesus Christ that was a bit brutal for 7:30pm…”

A third moaned: “I know it’s highlighting real issues but that was so horrible to watch. I’m crying and I feel sick,” before one more hissed: “A bit of rape at 7:30pm on #emmerdale @emmerdale put me right off my chicken wings!”

“Just caught the last few minutes of @emmerdale. That was definitely not 7pm viewing. Hope Rhona leaves him to show there’s hope,” cried this disgruntled critic, which was followed by: “Appreciate awareness is important but bloody hell #emmerdale it’s only 7.30 and kids might be watching !!”

This particularly outraged fewer complained: “That rape scene was not appropriate for this time of night it was clear what was happening a not done tastefully.”

Though, others defended the soap for bravely portraying an issue that is still a traumatising reality for far too many.

One snapped: “People moaning it was too early.. There was a warning. And welcome to real life,” as another agreed: “If you’re upset, the show did its job.”

“A TON of distressing stuff happens and they air during the DAY. Emmerdale told a harsh, realistic story and should be commended,” cried a third, before one more wrote: “Tough to watch but true to life good job #emmerdale let’s hope this gives strength to at least one victim to leave… “

Emmerdale responded by simply retweeting a post which read: “It was very upsetting but sensitively done, if it helps one person to understand coercion and all types of abuse then,” before adding one more: “@emmerdale distressing scenes but sadly accurate for some women. And men #domesticviolence.”

The scenes come after actress Zoe Henry admitted she wouldn’t be allowing her children to watch Rhona’s rape.

The mother-of-three told The Mirror: “I’m the mother of a 12-year-old girl and in the next five years she’ll be growing up and moving on. It’s more relevant than ever for me now.

“My kids won’t be watching the episode, because I’d find it a bit difficult. But I will probably sit down and talk her through it when I have some time.”

Emmerdale continues tomorrow night at 7pm on ITV.
