250 years ago, Captain Cook and naturalist Sir Joseph Banks set sail in HMS Endeavour to find the rumored southern continent (of course, indigenous Australians had known about it for tens of thousands of years at that point). In 1770, the voyage arrived at Botany Bay, on the Australian coast, as part of three of Cook’s famed voyages. He was killed in Hawaii during the last of them.

Cook’s famous ship had a somewhat less-dramatic ending after it returned to Britain in the early 1770s. The Royal Navy sold her in 1775 to a private owner, and the ship that had once been a vehicle of exploration spent the first half of the Revolutionary War as a contracted troop transport and prison ship under the name Lord Sandwich. Then, in 1778, besieged British forces deliberately sank (or “scuttled” in nautical parlance) her, along with a dozen other ships, to help block the entrance of Rhode Island Harbor from French ships.

Now archaeologists with the Rhode Island Marine Archaeology Project, or RIMAP, say they’ve found her again, although they have more work ahead to demonstrate it.

Rhode Island entrepreneurs form coalition to unite the state’s startup efforts https://briefnews.eu/rhode-island-entrepreneurs-form-coalition-to-unite-the-states-startup-efforts/ https://briefnews.eu/rhode-island-entrepreneurs-form-coalition-to-unite-the-states-startup-efforts/#respond Sat, 25 Nov 2017 18:53:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/rhode-island-entrepreneurs-form-coalition-to-unite-the-states-startup-efforts/

A group of Rhode Island entrepreneurs have formed a new group to boost the local startup ecosystem.

The new organization, called the Rhode Island Coalition of Entrepreneurs, launched its website this week and is now open to any founder or CEO of a high-growth startup in the state. The group’s leadership team is seeking fellow entrepreneurs to join the organization’s mission to promote a culture of collaboration and innovation in Rhode Island.

Pat Sabatino, founder and CEO of Providence-based Datarista, is serving as the group’s executive director. Sabatino says over 35 startups are already on board as members. The goal is to gather a critical mass of entrepreneurs to encourage collaboration and create a cohesive community for innovators. They also want to encourage aspiring entrepreneurs by providing resources, coaching, and mentorship over time.

Sabatino and his leadership team plan to host events and programming that will boost the entire entrepreneurial ecosystem — not just one or two companies. The group has met three times since July, but Sabatino says the concept has been kept under wraps until now.

After speaking with Rhode Island entrepreneurs and investors over the last couple of weeks, it’s become obvious there are upstarts growing and emerging all over the state. People who have been in the ecosystem a while say the entrepreneurial community in Rhode Island has come a long way in the last 10 years, but it still lacks some critical ingredients, including access to early-stage funding.

Sabatino has been looking for a Rhode Island-focused organization for founders and CEOs of upstarts since he started his Providence-based company Datarista in 2015.

“One of the things that has always struck me as odd is most entrepreneurs here in town don’t know each other,” Sabatino says. “I’ve had instances of talking to people who had adjacent products and offices less than a mile apart and they didn’t know each other.”

After talking about the impact a statewide entrepreneurial group could have on Rhode Island’s startup community for about a year, Sabatino decided to take matters into his own hands and started calling fellow entrepreneurs. He’s hosted the coalition’s first three meetings in Datarista’s office.

The group is not registered as a 501(c)3 nonprofit at this point, and it’s not charging membership fees or accepting funding. Sabatino says it’s more important for the group to forge meaningful relationships with civic leaders, universities, accelerator programs, and other constituents in the entrepreneurial ecosystem right now. That also means the group currently has no budget, so Sabatino says it will be important to spread the group’s message by word of mouth.

The organization also plans to make the needs of local entrepreneurs known to local government, corporations, and other institutions. Sabatino defines startups as high-growth, innovative ventures that typically seek funding to scale. He says the organization is going to be picky about how it defines startups because he wants the group to really represent and serve the unique needs of the entrepreneurial community.

“We believe that the development of partnerships across communities and industries is vital to the overall economic growth and success of the state,” the group says in its mission statement.

The Rhode Island Coalition of Entrepreneurs encourages CEOs and founders of high-growth startups to apply to join the group on its website. Sabatino hopes to have 100 members on board a year from now, as well as meaningful events and relationships to help foster the startup community.

“We are a new organization and we don’t have a firm agenda yet,” Sabatino says. “It’s a great time to join, be heard, and help shape the path.”

The Activist Putting the Heat on Rhode Island's Lefties https://briefnews.eu/the-activist-putting-the-heat-on-rhode-islands-lefties/ https://briefnews.eu/the-activist-putting-the-heat-on-rhode-islands-lefties/#respond Fri, 10 Nov 2017 14:44:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-activist-putting-the-heat-on-rhode-islands-lefties/ It was the Saturday after Donald Trump won his election, and more than a thousand left-leaning Rhode Islanders had gathered in the cafeteria at Hope High School in Providence. “We were all feeling lost and feeling like we needed to do something,” says Aaron Regunberg, the state representative who helped organize the event.

The location was personal for Regunberg. In 2010, Hope High was where, as a political science major at Brown University, he got his first big break as an activist, helping the students organize around issues related to student bus passes and infrastructure repairs. And “Hope” was also the slogan of the Chicago native’s idol, Barack Obama, whose ascent from community organizer to president made the previously unheralded job “sexy,” as he puts it.

With such a fitting backdrop, the organizer and his partners got to work, forming Resist Hate RI, which committed itself to opposing Trump’s agenda. Their first action? To plan a rally — protesting at the state capitol, outside the offices of the governor, the speaker of the house and the Senate president, among others, in Rhode Island’s major leadership roles. The point: “At the state level, business as usual won’t cut it,” Regunberg says.

As an organizer, you need to polarize, set clear lines, put pressure on people.

Aaron Regunberg

A year later, Regunberg, now 27 and newly married, is among the notable party-defying progressives taking the fight to the old guard of Democratic politics. Some have seized on the opportunity created by Trump’s scrambling of the national discourse and believe Democrats will win again only by embracing the left, not running toward the middle. Oftentimes, they, like Regunberg, are alumni of the Bernie Sanders campaign — people like Vincent Fort, an early Bernie backer now running for mayor of Atlanta, and Ben Jealous, the civil rights leader seeking the governorship of Maryland. On September 25, Regunberg announced he would challenge Lt. Gov. Dan McKee. He is running on an unapologetically progressive platform — promising to secure a living wage, protect immigrants and make sure the “1 percent pays their fair share” — which, if successful, could inform the campaigns of Democrats nationwide.

Too often, Regunberg argues, Rhode Island lawmakers are hesitant to lead on progressive labor and tax policies, concerned about staying competitive economically with their New England neighbors. His fears aren’t unfounded: Despite Rhode Island’s historical role leading on issues like religious freedom, abolitionism and gay marriage, political scientists Boris Shor and Nolan McCarty found that, from 1996 to 2013, the Ocean State had the narrowest ideological divide between Republicans and Democrats in the nation, according to state legislative voting records. And yet, activists like Regunberg have a special opportunity to break through in Rhode Island, says Michael Kennedy, a sociologist at Brown University. “If you want to get something done, you have to talk to somebody,” he says. “Rhode Islanders generally look at this as if it’s a sign of corruption, and it is, a little bit. But it’s also a sign of how much you can change things. If you get the right change agent, it can be dramatic what can be accomplished.”

Regunberg is hoping to be that catalyst. He ran for the Rhode Island House’s 4th district in 2014 after co-founding the Providence Student Union, which extended his activism at Hope High to other area schools. Once elected, he introduced legislation to guarantee earned paid sick days and to create a state-level carbon pricing system, among other objectives. At the beginning of this year, he partnered with fellow representatives to draft a “Fair Shot Agenda,” which aims to reach a $ 15 minimum wage, repair school buildings and create a tax code directed at wealthier Rhode Islanders. ”I don’t know who this hypothetical centrist voter who gets excited about the bland, moderated focus group message is …” Regunberg says, before getting interrupted by Laufton Ascencao-Longo, a friend who mockingly chimes in: “You’re gonna raise my taxes in just the right way. Yeah, that’s a voter.”

The pair are hunkered down in Regunberg’s satellite office, a workspace that also houses the Sierra Club and the Providence Democratic-Socialist Workers of America. Curly haired, with thin glasses and a sharp blue suit, Regunberg’s look doesn’t mesh with his activist roots (to be fair, his next stop is a meeting with a constituent at the Capitol). It’s 8 a.m., and by the time our interview is over, he’ll already be behind schedule — a common occurrence, friends say, for a man who has been wearing multiple hats for years now. “Real change requires building power on the outside to push an agenda,” Regunberg says, “and also having receptive people on the inside.”

He operates as both the megaphone on the outside and the voice of reason on the inside. “As an organizer, you need to polarize, set clear lines, put pressure on people,” Regunberg says. It’s an approach that’s earned him some enemies — getting slack, for instance, for his November statehouse rally. “There are lots of things that have gotten me into trouble,” he concedes. But party support and fundraising may prove to be his biggest obstacles, as the Midwest transplant takes on McKee, a former councilman and mayor whose family has run businesses in Rhode Island for over a century.

Still, Regunberg sees an opportunity to push the office of lieutenant governor past its traditional limitations. “The joke is that it’s like the vice president; you’re just waiting to see if the governor is still around,” he says. But because the position is elected, it “can’t be held captive,” he adds. “If used in the right way, it could be … an independent advocate for all the families who can’t afford a well-connected insider or a team of lobbyists.” With that pitch, his ability to rally the grassroots could be a formidable strength, one that could rattle Rhode Island’s comfy left by this time next year.

UFO? Russian sub detector? Mystery object removed from Rhode Island beach https://briefnews.eu/ufo-russian-sub-detector-mystery-object-removed-from-rhode-island-beach/ https://briefnews.eu/ufo-russian-sub-detector-mystery-object-removed-from-rhode-island-beach/#respond Fri, 01 Sep 2017 19:37:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ufo-russian-sub-detector-mystery-object-removed-from-rhode-island-beach/

A mysterious metal object has been pulled from the sea off the coast of Rhode Island, prompting a series of wild theories about what it might be.

The circular eight-legged contraption has puzzled Westerly bathers for months, after it was discovered more than a quarter of a mile from an oceanfront mansion owned by pop star Taylor Swift.

It was tugged from the sea by an excavator and dismantled before being moved to an undisclosed location Thursday, WFSB News reported.

President of the East Beach Association, Peter Brockmann, told the Providence Journal he has heard a lot of theories about the object’s origins.

“One of my favorites is, it’s a plug in the ocean,” he said. “Some people think it’s a part of an underwater net to detect Russian subs.”

Gus Kellogg, 12, told the Westerly Sun he thought the six-foot object was something out of this world.

“It’s going to put the United States and Westerly on the map if it is a UFO. If not, it’s a fun and entertaining day at the beach,” he said.

Brockmann, who has sought answers from the US Army Corps of Engineers, the US Navy and the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography, believes in a more down-to-earth theory.

“We do have one theory that makes sense,” he said. “A sea mount for an acoustic doppler current profiler.”

Whether the object is a UFO, a submarine detector, or a device for measuring the velocity of water currents, it is still a mystery how it got to the Westerly beach.

“Not a clue. Hopefully, the experts in this field will take a look at it, now that we have it out, and be able to identify it,” Brockmann told WPRI.

Rhode Island’s ‘sassy’ Teacher of the Year posed next to Trump with a black lace fan — and Trump loved it https://briefnews.eu/rhode-islands-sassy-teacher-of-the-year-posed-next-to-trump-with-a-black-lace-fan-and-trump-loved-it/ https://briefnews.eu/rhode-islands-sassy-teacher-of-the-year-posed-next-to-trump-with-a-black-lace-fan-and-trump-loved-it/#respond Sun, 18 Jun 2017 02:21:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/rhode-islands-sassy-teacher-of-the-year-posed-next-to-trump-with-a-black-lace-fan-and-trump-loved-it/ Nikos Giannopoulos, President Donald Trump, and First Lady Melania Trump.Facebook/The White House

Nikos Giannopoulos, Rhode Island’s 2017 Teacher of the Year, posed next to President Donald Trump while holding a black lace fan and wearing a rainbow LGBTQ pride pin on his jacket. And Trump “loved it,” Giannopoulos told NPR.

Giannopoulos posted the official White House photograph to Facebook on Thursday, which depicted him striking a memorable pose next to Trump and First Lady Melania Trump.

“Rhode Island Teacher of the Year 2017 meets the 45th President of the United States. That’s all. 🌈 🌈 🌈,” Giannopoulos’ caption read.

Giannopoulos told NPR he opened the black fan as soon as he walked into the Oval Office because he is a “very sassy person.” He added that Trump “loved it!”

“Trump complimented it right away,” Giannopoulos said. “He said, ‘I love the fan!’ And he told me I had great style. Then, when I was ushered in for my private photo with the president and Melania, I was told I should put [the fan] away,” he continued.

“So I just folded it up and held it at my side. But when it came time for the photo, I just asked the president, ‘Do you mind if I use the fan for the photo?’ He said, ‘Absolutely go for it.’ So I popped my fan and did my pose,” Giannopoulos added.

Giannopoulos’ photo with Trump has gone viral since it was first posted online — it has garnered over 13,000 likes and nearly 4,000 shares so far.

In response to the internet’s reaction to the picture, Giannopoulos said he was overwhelmed “because I am a really socially anxious person.”

“But overall, I’ve gotten a really positive response through the whole thing,” Giannopoulos said. “From younger people I get a lot of, ‘You’re my hero!’ And a lot of, ‘Werk Kween!’ which makes my day.”
