The Group C section of the competition continued this week, with Astronaut, Swan, T-Rex, Rhino and Night Angel belting their hearts out (or trying to) in order to get at least one more episode of the reality show under their belts.

After her rendition of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts’ “I Hate Myself for Loving You” ended with a highly weird declaration of adoration for judge Ken Jeong, Swan’s Masked Singer run was over: The big bird was revealed to be Shake It Up/Famous in Love star Bella Thorne. Now, ahead of Episode 9, it’s time to closely look at who’s left and try to discern who’s who. We’ve pulled together a large number of clues from the Masked Singer episodes that have already aired. The ultimate goal: Guess who’s beneath those costumes before they’re gone from the show.

The northern white rhino faces a grim fate when its last surviving examples are two infertile females. A novel scientific technique might just spare the species from extinction, however. Researchers have successfully created the first lab-made rhino embryos in a bid to give the northern white a second chance. The group collected eggs from southern white rhinos using a new extraction device and fertilized them using the sperm from dead northern whites, crafting viable embryos with the right DNA to continue the species.

There’s a lot of risk involved. The researchers will test their approach using southern rhinos as surrogates, but a complicated procedure (the females need to be anaesthetized for two hours) and a limited amount of northern sperm (just four dead males) doesn’t give the scientists many chances. If they run out of supply or the northern rhinos meet an untimely end, there may be no going back. The limited genetic variety would also cause problems — it could take a long, long time (if it can happen at all) before there would be enough diversity to ensure a flourishing population.

Still, there’s plenty of hope. The research unit is hoping that stem sell technology can create more eggs and sperm from the skin cells of 12 northern whites, increasing the supply and genetic variety. They also don’t think it will take too long to add to the species: they hope to witness the first northern white birth in three years, and that’s accounting for the rhino’s 16-month pregnancy period. If the scientists pull it off, they’ll both rescue a seemingly doomed animal and provide a blueprint for protecting other animals teetering on the edge of oblivion.

A rhino has charged at and injured a suspected poacher in Namibia. It is a rare case of the animal, hunted for its valuable horn, being able to fight back against the perpetrators.

The incident occurred at the Etosha National Park on October 14, but was reported by the newspaper The Namibian almost a week later. A group of poachers illegally made their way into the park in order to hunt down the rhinos, the paper said.They were searching for a victim when a rhino “appeared out of nowhere” and charged at the men.

One of the perpetrators, identified as Luteni Muharukua, fell as he was trying to escape and the animal inflicted a severe leg injury upon him.“His friends took and hid him (Muharukua) on a nearby mountain, and he was arrested there the next day by the police,” Simson Shilongo, police officer, told The Namibian.

According to the policeman, Muharukua was undergoing hospital treatment under police guard.The Namibian accompanied the story with a cartoon captioned: “The poacher, poached!”

Rhinos are being poached for their horns, the market value of which derives from their being considered to have powerful health-restoring properties in many Asian countries. The price of a rhino horn on the black market can reach up to $ 60,000 per kilogram ($ 1,700 per ounce), according to the Poaching Facts website.

Seven rhinos were killed by illegal hunters in Etosha National Park between June 2016 and June 2017, The Namibian reported earlier.

Pricier than snake-oil, and deadlier

A DEAD rhino, with a bloody stump in place of its horn, means different things. For the species it is the danger of imminent extinction; for wildlife-lovers it is barbarism; for law-enforcers it is failure. For its poachers it means income; the horn will be exported illegally to fetch tens of thousands of dollars. For economists, it means market forces are at work.

South Africa is in the throes of a poaching epidemic. Official figures show poachers killed 1,054 rhinos in 2016, up from just 13 in 2007. In Kruger National Park, home to the world’s largest rhino population, numbers are dropping despite a fall in recorded poaching incidents. Tom Milliken of TRAFFIC, a wildlife-trade monitoring network, worries that poachers have become better at hiding the carcasses.

The problem is international. The rhino-horn supply-chain sprawls from South Africa, home to nearly three-quarters of the world’s rhinos, to Asia, and in particular to Vietnam, where rhino horn is coveted as medicine, prescribed for fevers, alcohol dependency and even cancer.

Wildlife conservationists are asking love seekers to swipe right on a very horny suitor – an endangered white rhino called ‘Sudan’ – after he joined dating app Tinder to raise awareness for his dying species.

Poaching has left the northern white rhinoceros, one of the largest land mammals on the planet, on the brink, and Sudan is now the only male of his kind in the world. 

The 43-year-old Sudan admittedly already lives with two female rhinos in Kenya’s Ol Pejeta Conservancy. However, natural breeding has become a problem due to “issues including age,” according to Sudan’s conservation team.

The Ol Pejeta Conservancy is hopeful the animal’s “pretty impressive profile” will persuade people to dip into their pockets and donate.

“Not only is he a pretty fine specimen of a rhino, but he has his own personal team of armed bodyguards, and has appeared in a string of international documentaries and new stories,” a statement released by the wildlife team reads.

The animal’s Tinder profile states how he is the “last male white rhino on planet earth.”

“I don’t mean to be too forward, but the fate of my species literally depends on us getting together. I like to eat grass and chill in the mud. No problems performing under pressure. 6ft tall and 5,000lbs if it matters,” it adds.

While Sudan might sound like a player, the bachelor’s stint on Tinder is an effort to raise $ 9 million to help research in assisted reproductive techniques before it’s too late for some species.

It could see the world’s white rhino population boosted by in vitro fertilization.

“The plight that currently faces the northern white rhinos is a signal to the impact that humankind is having on many thousands of other species across the planet,” said Richard Vigne, CEO of Ol Pejeta Conservancy. “Ultimately, the aim will be to reintroduce a viable population of northern white rhino back into the wild which is where their true value will be realized.”

“We are in a race. A race against the extinction of the northern white rhino species. We urgently need to raise awareness and funds for Sudan. No one could run this campaign better than Tinder. It will offer the ‘most eligible bachelor’ global exposure in such a meaningful way,” added Ogilvy Africa spokesperson Mathieu Plassard.

The introduction of Sudan into the ‘wild’ world of dating might be for valiant conservation interests, but the move has bemused and amused some online, including one Twitter user who bizarrely questioned whether Tinder was trying to get him to mate with a rhino.
