Republican senators John McCain of Arizona, Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, Bill Cassidy of Louisiana and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina held a joint press conference Thursday evening, announcing that they would vote no on the “skinny” bill if they did not have assurances from the House that it will first go to a conference committee before being passed.
The Health Care Freedom Act was finally released later Thursday evening by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky), but even before the text was made public, Republicans expressed concerns that it wasn’t ready to become law without further conferencing with the House. The bill temporarily repeals Obamacare’s employer mandate until 2025.
“Here’s the problem, the whip in the House is suggesting to some that whatever we send becomes the final product, there will be no conference,” Graham said. “And I am not going to vote for the skinny bill if I’m not assured by the House there will be a conference where my idea and other ideas can be taken up so we can actually replace Obamacare.”
“I’m not going to vote for a bill that is terrible policy and horrible politics just because we have to get something done,” Graham added.
McCain called for bipartisanship, citing Obamacare, which he said was “rammed through Congress by Democrats without a single Republican vote.”
“We’ve got to have Republicans and Democrats sit down together and come up with a bill that gets a majority in both houses, otherwise we’re going to see this continuous gridlock,” McCain said. “It’s time we sat down together and came up with solutions that the American people overall would support.”
While a copy of the “skinny” bill has not been made available to lawmakers, House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin) did confirm that the bill currently includes a repeal of the employer mandates from Obamacare. The bill is also expected to cut federal funding to Planned Parenthood for one year.
Together, the senators have more than enough votes to block the “skinny” bill from going to the House, where it could be passed and then sent to President Donald Trump. By having a conference, the senators hope they can change the “skinny” bill before a final vote.
If the Senate does pass a bill, both chambers of Congress would have to approve whatever bill comes out of the House-Senate conference.
House Speaker Ryan issued a statement Thursday, saying that “If moving forward requires a conference committee, that is something the House is willing to do.”
“The House remains committed to finding a solution and working with our Senate colleagues, but the burden remains on the Senate to demonstrate that it is capable of passing something that keeps our promise, as the House has already done,” Ryan said.
However, McCain later told reporters that Ryan’s statement was “not sufficient” to garner his vote.

Democrats argue that if the bill does contain cuts to Planned Parenthood, it would no longer meet the guidelines for reconciliation, a budget mechanism that allows Republicans to pass the bill with a simple majority of 51 votes, rather than 60 votes as normal Senate procedures require.
Senators Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) have both said that they would not vote for a measure that cuts Planned Parenthood.
The “skinny” bill is not expected to include any cuts to Medicaid, but cuts could be added once the bill is sent to conference Republicans.
While a handful of senators are calling for a conference, others want to vote on the “skinny” bill without any changes.
Senator Chris Murphy (R-Connecticut) said that the bill “isn’t going to conference, this is becoming law.”
“The White House doesn’t support a conference, the White House really likes the skinny bill and would like it to become law,” Murphy said, according to the Guardian.
Senate packs repeal bill w conservative priorities + Trump says he loves bill + House readies w martial law = THERE WILL BE NO CONFERENCE

At Thursday’s press briefing, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed that the White House likes the “skinny” bill, and said that they are re-branding it as the “freedom bill.”
“We actually like the term ‘freedom bill’ a lot better because we think it addresses what this bill actually is – it removes a lot of those mandates that allow people to have the type of freedom, have states have the freedom that they want. And that was one of the big priorities for this administration,” Huckabee Sanders said.
As Republicans attempt to pass their bill before the August recess, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-California) sent an email to lawmakers Thursday, asking all member of Congress to “remain flexible in their travel plans over the next few days,” according to Politico.
One light of hope for the GOP came when the moderate Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio) announced his support for the “skinny” repeal. However, he has also released a statement calling for a House-Senate conference, where anything could happen.
“I will support legislation to move this process to a House-Senate conference because I believe we need to repeal and replace Obamacare,” Portman said, adding that he will fight for “a better health care system that lowers the cost of coverage, provides access to quality care, and protects the most vulnerable in our society.”

New artifacts suggest Indigenous people in Australia could be up to 20,000 years older than previously believed, Poland gets a royal visit, Jordan’s epic new hiking trail, and more in your weekly wrap of adventure travel news.
New research in Australia’s Kakadu National Park has proven that Aboriginal people have inhabited the continent for at least 65,000 years, with some newly-discovered artifacts potentially up to 80,000 years old. The findings, published in the journal Nature, are the result of archaeological digs that uncovered some 11,000 artifacts, and overturn previous estimations that Indigenous people have inhabited the continent for 47,000 to 60,000 years. The traditional landowners, the Mirrar people, retained ‘total control over the dig and the artifacts’, reported the Guardian on Thursday.

This year, Jordan opened the Jordan Trail, a 400-mile route that’s been dubbed ‘the Inca Trail of the Middle East’. As Emma Thomson writes for Adventure.com, the trail runs from Um Qais in the north to Aqaba on the Red Sea coastline, taking in 52 villages en route, as well as the UNESCO-listed city of Petra and Wadi Rum valley. US author, travel writer and TV presenter Andrew Evans—part of the team that completed the first-ever end-to-end hike of the trail–said: “[The trail] allows you to see the unabbreviated version of Jordan.”

As far as comedy sequels go, Wayne’s World 2 is among the better ones. Even though it’s not nearly as good as the original Wayne’s World, it’s still much better than all but three of the other movies based on Saturday Night Live characters, and even ended up towards the top of our list ranking all of them. But the sequel that fans enjoyed would have been drastically different if Mike Myers had been allowed to use the idea he originally had. Instead, the Saturday Night Live star was forced to rewrite the script at the last minute. So why was Wayne’s World 2 rewritten? Find out below
The Hollywood Reporter pulled a story from a new biography by Stephen Galloway about former, legendary studio boss Sherry Lansing, who was once the chairman at Paramount Pictures, which distributed both Wayne’s World and its sequel. In the book, the original idea for Wayne’s World 2 was explained by Saturday Night Live creator and showrunner Lorne Michaels, “Mike had always wanted to do Passport to Pimlico as the basis of Wayne’s World.” If you’re unfamiliar with the 1949 British comedy, here’s the synopsis for Passport to Pimlico:
“The accidental explosion of an undetonated German bomb left over from World War II unearths a long-buried cellar containing both fabulous riches and a previously unknown royal charter from King Edward IV that cedes the surrounding land to the last Duke of Burgundy. Since the charter has never been rescinded, the London district of Pimlico is now legally the long-lost Duchy of Burgundy, and therefore no longer subject to British law, including postwar rationing and pub closure hours.”
Now I’m not sure how Mike Myers would have adapted that into the style of Wayne’s World, but maybe there was a story there where Wayne discovers his house isn’t within the jurisdiction of United States law or something like that. Or maybe the concert plot from Wayne’s World 2 was still in play and they decided to throw it in an area that was free of the usual rules for music festivals.
Lorne Michaels went on to explain that Mike wrote the script with his original idea intact, “I think he believed the studio understood that, and I think he even believed they had bought the rights to the other movie so that he was free to use it.” However, that was not the case, and Myers was not made aware of this until after the script was done with only a few weeks before shooting was supposed to begin.
If Paramount Pictures decided to make this movie based on Passport to Pimlico without having the rights to that movie, the rights holders could have filed a lawsuit to stop the film from being released. Paramount could have just gotten the rights to the movie, but with such a short window of time until production started, there was nowhere near enough time to negotiate a deal. So Mike Myers had to rewrite the script, and he had quite the motivation because Sherry Lansing really laid into him at the time.
In the book, one person who was sitting on in the meeting where this revelation was made recalls Lansing threatening Myers in the way that you think only ever happens in movies or Entourage. This person explained, “[Lansing] said, ‘How dare you? How dare you put us in this position?’ She turned to Mike and said, ‘We’ll sue you. We’ll take your f—ing house. You won’t even own a f—ing home.’”
Apparently Myers was so scared at this point that he was curled up in the fetal position on Lansing’s couch, clearly devastated by this news and the prospect of trying to fix the issues. But Lansing gave him the perfect pep talk when she said, “If I were you, Mike, I’d go to Lorne’s office right now and stay there until you come up with a new script. We’ll slide food under the door.”
As we know, Mike Myers rewrote the script, and the result was a solid comedy sequel. Myers was even able to incorporate some British humor into it by having Ralph Brown play a legendary British roadie named Del Preston, using stand-ins to make it look like Wayne and Garth went to London and hit some of the tourist hot spots. So Myers got his mega happy ending for Wayne’s World 2, but now I want to read that original script.

There are two ways to look at all of the noise surrounding The Batman, Ben Affleck‘s upcoming solo adventure as the Caped Crusader. One narrative is that Warner Bros. has no idea what to do with their DC comic book properties. The other is that The Batman is hitting speed bumps because everyone involved is actively working to get this one right and want to avoid disappointing fans who were let down by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad.
It has already been reported that The Batman will be delayed due to director Matt Reeves‘ pre-existing commitments to another project. Now, we are hearing that the film is being completely rewritten from scratch.
That first piece of news comes our way via Variety’s Justin Kroll, who took to Twitter to reveal that Reeves is working on War For the Planet of the Apes until the end of June. That means The Batman won’t even begin production until 2018 at the earliest, which means that the rumored 2018 release date is impossible.
Hearing Matt Reeves contracted to work on APES till at least end of June, so production on BATMAN likely not starting till 2018
— Justin Kroll (@krolljvar) March 14, 2017
Kroll also warned that Reeves won’t even meet with any actors until the summer, so outside of Ben Affleck himself, no casting rumors that pop up between now and then will carry much weight.
Also means any casting rumors you hear are likely BS seeing that he wouldn't have time to meet with any talent till at least July

We can now report that there is more going behind-the-scenes as well. According to sources close to the production, the screenplay for The Batman is being rewritten from the ground up, so it’s entirely possible that everything we’ve heard about the film’s story will no longer be in play.
For the record, the original screenplay for The Batman was supposedly in flux last month, when it was initially reported that the studio was eyeing a “fresh start.” A day later, it was reported that everyone was happy with the latest draft. Affleck, Chris Terrio, and DC Comics writer and CCO Geoff Johns were among those who worked the first version of the screenplay, which reportedly featured Batman facing off against Deathstroke.
While the internet’s knee-jerk response to reshoots and rewrites in general is to shout “Trainwreck!”, this actually sounds like good news. This means that Reeves, a talented director and a fine match for the Dark Knight, isn’t simply taking on leftovers – he’s actively involved in tailoring the film to his sensibilities. It’s not clear who is responsible for the new script quite yet, but this feels like everyone slowing down, taking a moment, and setting out to do this right rather than rush to meet a release date.
At this rate, a 2019 release for The Batman sounds about right. However, the more important thing is that Reeves and Affleck aim to make a great movie, not hit a release date.

The multi-talented actor-writer-director has already stepped down from directing the upcoming DC Comics caper, and now his initial screenplay has been given a polish.
According to Forbes, Chris Terrio – who worked with Affleck on Argo and won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay – has already rewritten The Batman, but another full rewrite is thought to still be in the works.
As far as the director is concerned, nobody has formally replaced Affleck as yet – although it seems Matt Reeves is the frontrunner.
Affleck, for the time being, remains attached to play the title role, although speculation is never-ending as to whether or not he will step down.
He previously said: ”There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions. Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give.
“It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film.
“I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director.
“I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.”
A 2019 release is still being targeted, with July thought to be the most likely time – which could potentially be far enough away for even Affleck to step down from acting, if he so chooses.
There’s plenty of other DC goodness to come in the meantime: Wonder Woman, Justice League, Aquaman and Gotham City Sirens are all at various stages in production.
Wonder Woman is next up, and is in cinemas on June 2.
