“Pinocchio” is the latest Disney animated film to get an updated “live-action” remake in our contemporary times. The 1940 original is rightfully a classic — a film that pushed the boundary of what animation can bring to the screen and a story about a boy’s earnest search to find out who he is. Robert Zemeckis’ remake, however, fails to capture the heart of the original. It’s poorly paced, full of actors talking in multiple variants of accented English that make Dick Van Dyke’s Cockney accent seem good in comparison, and delivers major characters who are stilted, disjointed, and lacking life.
The story of Zemeckis’ “Pinocchio” largely follows that of the original film, inspired by “The Adventures of Pinocchio” by Carlo Collodi. An old woodworker named Geppetto wishes on a star for Pinocchio, a wooden puppet he made, to become a real boy. Geppetto gets his wish, although Pinocchio remains made of wood and must prove himself to become “a real boy.” With Jiminy Cricket as his conscience, Pinocchio faces unexpected adventures such as becoming famous (and summarily exploited and imprisoned for it); getting sent to a place called Pleasure Island where bad children literally become jackasses; and culminates inside the belly of a giant sea monster. Throughout this journey, Pinocchio learns to be brave, truthful, and unselfish. Just like a real boy.
The original Disney movie came out over 80 years ago and is a product of its time. And as such, the remake updates certain things that haven’t fared well over the decades (you won’t, for example, see any kids sucking on cigarettes and getting wasted). Those are welcome changes, but the movie fails on almost every other front, even though the major plot points are essentially the same. It’s like someone put all the components of the original into a blender and turned the appliance on without a lid. The result is a big old mess; a story barely cobbled together by a series of painfully bad jokes and horrific Southern, French, Italian, and New York “Newsies” accents.

Before I get into the bad, let me give credit to the good in “Pinocchio.” The movie does contain moments that aren’t terrible. Cynthia Erivo’s Blue Fairy, the magical being who bestows Pinocchio with sentience, has empathy and warmth that’s hard to find elsewhere in the film. Jaquita Ta’le’s performance as the puppeteer that befriends Pinocchio is also a bright spot in a tale full of garish characters whose personalities are as flimsy and superficial as the production’s visual effects.
Other good things? For those of you who like Easter eggs, Geppetto’s cuckoo clocks might do something for you, as we see renditions of everything from “Snow White” to “Roger Rabbit” in the clock’s designs. For those of you who don’t like overly obvious references to Disney’s IP portfolio, however, these references might just be another thing that makes you want to hurl your remote at your television.
One of the best things I can say about the movie is that it likely won’t be one that your child will want to watch over and over, which means you won’t have to, either. It starts out slow, with Geppetto (a befuddled Tom Hanks) giving a 20-minute rambling soliloquy about how he misses his dead wife and son and how he made a wooden boy puppet to fill his lonely days. Why didn’t he make a new son the more conventional way? As Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Jiminy Cricket explains later in his horrific pseudo-Southern accent, poor ol’ Geppetto doesn’t get out much. Apologies if you — like I did after Jiminy’s observation — get some imagery in your head that you never asked for. I’m just thankful that Geppetto decided to make a wooden replica of his dead son rather than his wife, although a Geppetto version of “Lars and the Real Girl” would arguably be a more intriguing and thought-provoking movie to watch.

If you and/or your child make it past the first 20 or so minutes of “Pinocchio,” you’ll be submitted to a series of wisecracks about Pinocchio being made of pine wood, so much so that you might think this is a crucial piece of information that comes into play later (reader, it does not, although you will be subjected to a horrible Chris Pine punchline). You’ll also have to endure the movie’s lackluster visual effects. It’s clear Disney knew it didn’t have a “Lion King” live-action remake on its hands and cut the budget accordingly. The CGI characters’ uncanny valleys are deep, and the spectacle of Pleasure Island is poorly rendered to the point of distraction. Pinocchio himself looks decent, although he did the “I can rotate my head 360 degrees” bit a few too many times, reminding you that puppets — even ones as annoyingly earnest as Pinocchio — are just plain creepy.
Monstro, the giant sea monster who swallows Pinocchio and Geppetto whole, is also suitably scary and one of the less-bad things about the film, especially the monster’s insides, which captures glimmers of the dark-yet-adventurous tone that I yearned for throughout the film.
And while the ending thankfully veers away from the message that one should strive to change themselves to make their parents happy, the “twist” occurs almost as an afterthought and is given barely a minute of genuflection before the credits begin. That crucial moment could be easily missed by a young person or a casual viewer, and in a worst-case scenario, might leave them thinking the opposite of the ultimate message the movie is trying to convey.
That’s not great, much like the rest of the movie. And as a parent myself, if faced with the choice of watching this film again with my child versus caving into her request to watch “Frozen” for the 35th million time, I would unhesitatingly get ready to hear “Let It Go” than rewatch this remake.

Got lost in Hill House the first time around? It happens.
After all, Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House is made to captivate, to suck you in and to disorient you — the same way the hellish home does to the Crain family over decades.
By now, (we assume) you’ve made it all the way from the series premiere to the Season 1 finale. That mean’s it’s time to go back and focus on some of of the deliciously devilish details writer/director Mike Flanagan sprinkled over all 10 episodes like rain — or confetti.
Don’t be afraid: We’ve made you a guide.
The gallery at right contains 10 moments — in no particular order — we think you might want to give a second look during your inevitable rewatch. Some are insidiously scary. Others are just plain silly. One of them might have made us pee a little. All of them bear more scrutiny (we mean, those hidden ghosts alone are enough to keep us up at night). Also, a note of warning: The gallery covers the full first season, so there are spoilers within.
Click on the gallery at right (or go to it directly here) to see what’s been keeping us up at night. And when you’re done, make sure to log your favorite Hill House scenes in the comments below!

As Once Upon a Time gets ready to unspool the back half of its seventh and now final season, TVLine revisits some of the ABC series’ most memorable moments.
It was exactly five years ago today that Once Upon a Time served up one of its most anticipated moments, one-and-a-half seasons into its run.
Gotham‘s Bruce Wayne and Selina “People Call Me Cat” Kyle (played by David Mazouz and Camren Bicondova) have come a long way since the rich kid caught the street rat eyeballing a 500-year-old Ming vase, as seen in this recap video released ahead of Season 4.
Have your Bat-Kleenex at the ready before you press play, because this catwalk down memory lane is bound to make you marvel, “They done growed up!” as the unlikely friends (and fated frenemies) evolve from aimless tweens to young adults on the verge of destinies.
Rest assured, there will be plenty more of the duo’s dynamic to come when the Fox drama returns on Sept. 21, now airing Thursdays at 8/7c. As executive producer Danny Cannon noted during our in-depth Fall Preview Q&A, “You have two independent people going on their own path. Both parentless, both orphans to a certain extent.” But because Selina was left completely alone to her own devices, whereas Bruce enjoys a life of privilege and support from Alfred, “something hardens within her as she ages.”
Even so, “We know there’s always a good side to her that will find a kinship with Bruce, an attraction to Bruce, that we can’t stop playing with,” the EP adds. “It’s just too delicious.”

Excellent news: Samurai Jack is back next month! Even excellenter news: To celebrate, Adult Swim is streaming all 52 episodes of the show on loop, available for free online with no ads, right goddamn now. You should watch all of it, of course, but here are 10 episodes you just can’t miss before the new season returns on March 11.

A perennial favorite, this episode sees Jack attempt to get access to a well guarded by three Jackal Archers, who’ve trained themselves to overcome their blindness in order to unleash volleys of arrows at anyone who comes close to it. It’s a tale of Jack’s ingenuity as he tries to overcome the Jackals’ defense, but as with a lot of Jack episodes, it’s also told in an incredibly stylish manner, with virtually no dialogue—instead, using the series’ stellar music and sound design to tell its tale. (Season One, Episode 7)

That amazing fight in the new season five trailer between Jack and the female assassins, lighting up the dark with the clash of their weapons? It’s an homage to one of the most stylish episodes of the series, in which Jack faces a robot ninja sent by Aku to kill him, and the two warriors use light and shadow to conceal themselves from each other during a truly spectacular duel. (S4, E1)

Aside from Jack and Aku, Samurai Jack doesn’t really do recurring characters. One of the few exceptions to this rule is the Scotsman, Jack’s rowdy, hilarious, machine-gun-for-a-leg-having foil across several episodes. He’s always a hoot when he shows up, but season four’s two-parter “The Scotsman Saves Jack” in particular is great.

Jack is barely in this episode, but it’s an awesome, tragic insight into the world of Aku’s domain and his minions, framed through a noir lens. X9, a robotic detective type given a personality by Aku, is the star as he hunts for the one thing he’s bonded with: a small dog named Lulu. (S4, E11)

Jack is often seen as being great at everything, especially in a fight. But this fun, slightly goofy episode focuses on a rare area of weakness for our hero. It’s sort of an extended take on the classic training sequence montage, but with a village of incredibly affable monkey-like creatures. (S2, E1)

The closest thing Samurai Jack has to a Halloween special also features one of the most gorgeous fight scenes of the entire series. Jack battles an evil spirit in a style that looks like a moving ink painting mixed with a sentient Rorschach image. (S3, E9)

Another episode where Jack is barely in it, “Princess and the Bounty Hunters” is told from the perspective of a group of bounty hunters who are explaining their plans to take down Jack (and then being told how poorly it will go by the titular Princess). Although it’s a lot of fun, when Jack finally appears at the end the episode pivots into a brilliantly anxious scene that is one of the most gut-wrenchingly tense moments of the show. (S4, E5)

One thing season five will be sorely missing is the absence of Mako Iwamatsu, the evil Aku’s original voice actor, who sadly passed away in 2006. “Aku’s Fairy Tales” is told from the villain’s perspective, as he attempts to make the children of the world fear him once again by telling a trio of fairy tales and replacing the heroes and villains with himself and Jack, respectively. It’s an example of the remarkable range and depth Iwamatsu provided to his performance. (S1, E13)

One of the best things about Samurai Jack is its brilliantly choreographed action, and this episode is pretty much all action. Trapped in an homage to the Mad Max’s Thunderdome, Jack is forced into combat against a series of vivid, weird, and fearsome foes, one after the other. They’re all different battles that Jack overcomes in different ways, but the episode essentially one long master class in the show’s violent, kinetic approach to action. (S2, E3)

As the title implies, Jack gets a huge goddamn robot (well, it’s actually a big golem) to pilot in this episode, as he goes up against the gigantic robotic guardian of the city of Andromeda after it inadvertently goes rogue and turns on its creators. Consider it the spiritual ancestor of Tartakovsky’s short-lived but excellent Sym-Bionic Titan, which further explored his love of the mecha genre. (S4, E2)
What episodes of Samurai Jack are you looking forward to rewatching before Jack’s return? Like we said going in, the answer should be all of them, but there are many great episodes not on this list (“Jack vs. Aku,” “Jack Remembers the Past,” “Jack vs. Mad Jack,” “Jack vs Demongo the Soul Collector,” “Jack Tales”—we could go on). Let us know your favorites in the comments below.
