Love After Love review: A rich and rewarding novel https://briefnews.eu/love-after-love-review-a-rich-and-rewarding-novel/ https://briefnews.eu/love-after-love-review-a-rich-and-rewarding-novel/#respond Fri, 09 Mar 2018 14:37:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/love-after-love-review-a-rich-and-rewarding-novel/

Nancy is a conscientious, loving mother to three children whom she and her kind, supportive husband Stef adore.

“Let this, which is so much, become enough,” she thinks.

She also enjoys a successful career as a psychologist.

But deep down she senses that something is missing from her life, “a taint at the back of every happiness”.

So it is perhaps unsurprising that for the past two years Nancy has been having an affair with fellow psychologist Adam.

They fell in love “by increments, with the occasional quantum leap”.

Nancy reflects: “Stef is a good man and a textbook father. A faithful partner.

“All of these things and more but he is not Adam, at whose nearness all logic collapses.”

Adam would leave his wife for Nancy.

But Nancy has always been frank about the fact that she couldn’t bear to break up her family and she cannot offer him any more than they have.

So they snatch time together at the practice offices they share and from time to time go away under the guise of attending psychology conferences.

While Nancy is juggling her marriage and her affair she has abundant family worries to occupy her mind.

Her teenage daughter Frieda is unsettled, keeping Nancy at arm’s length.

Then Stef insists on inviting Adam and his actress wife Tara to the birthday party of Nancy’s brother David.

There both of her worlds collide when Frieda, an aspiring actress, makes a beeline for Tara who takes the teenager under her wing and the pair form a close bond that unsettles Nancy.

Then her brother David, who for Nancy is both “my first love” and “selfish and cruel”, disappears.

Family stress combines with mounting pressures at work to force Nancy to confront her own needs at last.

Love After Love’s jacket hints that it is a thriller and this is reinforced by some red herrings in the opening pages.

But in fact it is something more subtle, reflective and thought provoking.

And you become just as anxious for the wellbeing of its characters as when reading a menacing thriller.

This rich and rewarding novel captures one woman’s inner life and conflicts with acuity.

It is insightful about the legacy of the family that shaped us and the legacy we leave to the family we shape.

It is also the kind of controversial novel that will be catnip to book groups, exploring the question of when our lives and identities become subsumed by looking after other people and at what point it is reasonable to say: “Enough,” and to put yourself front and centre.

Monster Hunter: World review — beautiful and rewarding no matter how you play https://briefnews.eu/monster-hunter-world-review-beautiful-and-rewarding-no-matter-how-you-play/ https://briefnews.eu/monster-hunter-world-review-beautiful-and-rewarding-no-matter-how-you-play/#respond Thu, 25 Jan 2018 09:11:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/monster-hunter-world-review-beautiful-and-rewarding-no-matter-how-you-play/

Monster Hunter went big with this latest installment. The action role-playing series had found a comfortable place in the handheld world, but Monster Hunter: World brings the franchise to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One when it launches on January 26 (I played it on my PlayStation 4). A PC version is following later this year.

I’ve dabbled with Monster Hunter in the past. I’ve enjoyed it, but I never became addicted. But Monster Hunter: World is impressive. This isn’t an updated version of some portable game. It’s beautiful in a way I’d never have expected from this series. The world is lush with life, the sunsets are stunning, and the monsters move with convincing animations and personalities that make them believable despite their outrageous designs. If you told me a game would have me fight a giant lightning lizard that’s part flying squirrel, I’d have assumed it would be comedic. But in Monster Hunter: World, this creature is majestic and frightening.

Monster Hunter: World has a ton of content, and it’s constantly rewarding you for delving deeper.

What you’ll like

The hunt

Most of Monster Hunter: World revolves around, well, hunting monsters. These encounters usually have two phases. At first, you’re tracking your prey. You explore and look for signs of the monster from things like footprints and claw marks. Find enough of these, and you can begin to track the beast via some fireflies (yeah, it’s another waypoint system, but it’s a pretty one).

When you find the monster, you have a lot of options. You can just run in and start swinging your weapon. You can lay traps. You can search for higher ground so you can jump on its back. These fights are long and difficult, so preparation is often necessary. Most beasts will try to run away from you after taking a beating, so you’ll have to give chase, track them again, or take the opportunity to collect yourself and heal up.

Basically, a lot is going on. These fights are interesting and dynamic, since you can approach them in so many different ways. Even the environment can have an impact. A monster can fall into a pit, or a bigger creature can appear and insert himself into the fight. You’re not just spamming an attack button and occasionally dodging or countering an attack.

Above: It’s a monster’s world.

The variety

Weapons dictate your playstyle, and each one has a different feel. Some are straightforward, like giant swords or hammers that are slow to swing but deal a lot of damage. Others are much more complex. For example, a bagpipe/giant club can attack enemies while creating songs that buff players. You can try all these options and find a style that suits you. I know I thought the bagpipes were cool and all, but I went with a simpler giant sword.

Variety also comes via upgrades. When you’re wandering the world, you can collect plants, ore, bugs, and more. You also harvest parts from monsters. You can use these to craft items like potions, ammo, and — most importantly — armor and weapons. After almost every hunt, you’ll have parts to help you upgrade or create something new.

Easy multiplayer

You can play Monster Hunter: World alone just fine, but the game makes it easy to quest with others. You can host your own session or join others from the game’s main hub town. Once connected, players go about their business until one starts a quest. At that point, others can opt in to join or stay behind at the town waiting for a different activity. You can also join players if they’re in the middle of a quest.

If you want even faster cooperative play, you can shoot a flare during missions that enables other players to join you immediately. You can also search for others who shot a flare at your base. It makes it easy to quickly ask for help or jump into another person’s session.

The beauty

Monster Hunter: World is often stunning. The game’s hub, a multi-level base made of tents, ships, and giant bones, is one of the cooler video game locations I’ve seen in some time. I played Monster Hunter: World on a PlayStation 4 Pro, and the 4K and HDR settings made the colors and lighting effects stand out.

The game’s levels teem with life and magnificent vistas. Tracking down monsters is made much more enjoyable just because the world is so interesting to look at.

The world also has plenty of character. You can eat a meal before going out on a quest to get a buff to stats like attack power. But you don’t just navigate a menu. A funny and clever cutscene of cat creatures preparing your meal plays out. Moments like that add a lot of character to Monster Hunter: World.

What you won’t like

Repetition

Hunting monsters is fun. But it does begin to feel familiar. Although the beasts have unique abilities, a lot of fights play out the same. You track them, you beat them up a bit, they flee, you chase, you beat them up some more.

Conclusion

Monster Hunter: World is one of the more rewarding action role-playing games I’ve played in recent years. The game is enjoyable either solo or with other players, and it manages to take advantage of modern hardware to envelop you in a beautiful world.

I never got into Monster Hunter before, but now I can’t wait for this game to officially be out so I have more people to play with.

Score: 90/100

Monster Hunter: World is out on January 26 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The publisher sent us a PS4 code for review.

5 studies that help explain why social drinking is so rewarding https://briefnews.eu/5-studies-that-help-explain-why-social-drinking-is-so-rewarding/ https://briefnews.eu/5-studies-that-help-explain-why-social-drinking-is-so-rewarding/#respond Mon, 27 Mar 2017 03:54:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/5-studies-that-help-explain-why-social-drinking-is-so-rewarding/ brooklyn social Foursquare/christian svanes k.

For millennia, humans have enjoyed using alcohol as a social lubricant. The reasons seem obvious at first. Most of us have had a drink or two that’s put us at ease, helped us lose our inhibitions, lifted our mood. And yet, literally for decades through the last century, psychologists and other scientists struggled to find evidence for what they termed the “tension reduction theory” that proposed alcohol was rewarding because of its relaxing, mood-enhancing effects. In the lab, alcohol often had no effect or even made people feel worse.

A new review in Behaviour Research and Therapy helps make sense of this mismatch between real life and the lab. Too much of the early research presumed alcohol’s effects are straightforward, that if you give a dose of alcohol to a person sat alone in a psych lab, that its pharmacological effects will kick in and make them feel jollier and less anxious.

The reality, as Michael Sayette of the University of Pittsburgh explains in his review, is that alcohol’s rewarding effects interact in complex ways with our thoughts and emotions and the social situations we find ourselves in. To uncover why social drinking is so rewarding, researchers have had to develop more sophisticated, realistic experiments. Here I’ve pulled out five of the key insights from Sayette’s review that help explain why so many of us find alcohol the perfect companion when we’re socialising.

Alcohol makes us stay in the moment

With moderate doses of alcohol we seem less affected by past experiences, our mood is more connected to the immediate moment. One study to show this involved researchers filming small groups of strangers interacting. Comparing the changing facial emotions of those participants who’d drunk modest amounts of alcohol with those who’d drunk a non-alcoholic beverage or placebo (they thought it was alcohol but it wasn’t) showed that alcohol seemed to reduce “emotional inertia” – that is, the intoxicated participants’ current emotions were less affected by their earlier emotions. As Sayette writes in his review,  alcohol “increases the ability to experience the present moment unbound by past experience.”

Alcohol reduces anxiety, but not fear

Moderate intoxication doesn’t seem to help reduce our fear of a threat that we know is definitely coming, but it does reduce our anxiety about unpredictable threats, which could help explain its appeal in social situations.

An unpredictable threat is more analogous to the challenge of a social situation where you never know when you might next suffer a snub or awkward exchange.

Researchers demonstrated this effect of alcohol by measuring participants’ startle response to loud noises during a task in which they knew they were definitely going to receive mild electric shocks, or another in which there was uncertainty about whether they would receive a shock or not.

Drinking alcohol reduced participants’ startle reaction and their subjective feelings of anxiety only when the shock threat was uncertain. “This experiment provides clear evidence that the magnitude of alcohol stress reduction is greater when there is uncertainty about the severity of the upcoming threat than when the threat is well defined,” the researchers said.

Alcohol narrows our attention focus, making it easier to ignore worries and threats

When we’re mildly intoxicated we seem to have less spare mental capacity which means that as long as we’re currently distracted by a pleasant or non-threatening task – such as chatting with friends – our minds are less likely to have the resources left over to worry about other things. For a study published in 1988, participants were either mildly intoxicated or sober, and either looked at art slides or sat quietly, after being told that they would soon have to give a speech.

Being intoxicated and looking at art slides helped reduced the anxiety about the upcoming speech consistent with the “attention-allocation” model of alcohol’s effects – that is, presumably the tipsy participants were unable to fret about the upcoming speech because the artwork occupied their diminished powers of attention. Alcohol or artwork on their own did not have the same benefit.

Alcohol boosts social bonding and the catchiness of positive emotions

It’s little wonder that early research struggled to pin down the rewarding effects of alcohol: so many of these studies involved testing participants on their own when some of alcohol’s most relevant effects seem to manifest specifically in social situations.

Recent research has begun to capture these social effects. For example, when psychologists filmed small groups of strangers getting to know each other, they found that those groups who were mildly intoxicated reported increased feelings of closeness with their new acquaintances and they displayed more genuine “Duchenne” smiles, as compared with sober groups or groups drinking placebo. What’s more, alcohol increased the frequency of “golden moments” when all three members of the group were showing Duchenne smiles at once.

Men and extroverts are especially likely to experience the social benefits of moderate drinking

Other research that’s used the same format, of filming groups of strangers getting to know each other, has found that extraverts are especially likely to report mood-enhancing and social bonding effects of alcohol, which might partly help explain why extraverts are more likely to develop problems with drinking to excess. Similarly, men seem especially receptive to alcohol’s social effects.

For instance, other research that’s used conversation volume to gauge the merriment of social gatherings has found that small groups of sober women seem merrier than small groups of sober men, but this gender difference disappears when participants have had an alcoholic drink. The researchers said this shows “greater alcohol reward for male groups and thus identifies a mechanism that may support heavy drinking in male drinking contexts.”

Concluding his review, Michael Sayette says that that there is still a lot more we need to know about social drinking: for example, a lot of the social group research has so far involved strangers, but of course much of the time we drink socially with friends in which case the precise effects of alcohol might be quite different.

He also notes that these findings on social drinking could help inform new ways to help people who have problems with controlling their alcohol consumption. For instance, by better understanding the rewarding psychological effects of alcohol, clinicians might be better placed to help clients find different, potentially healthier ways to increase their enjoyment of socialising.

Nioh Review: A rewarding Dark Souls heir set in 16th century Japan https://briefnews.eu/nioh-review-a-rewarding-dark-souls-heir-set-in-16th-century-japan/ https://briefnews.eu/nioh-review-a-rewarding-dark-souls-heir-set-in-16th-century-japan/#respond Mon, 06 Feb 2017 22:49:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nioh-review-a-rewarding-dark-souls-heir-set-in-16th-century-japan/

Enlarge / Uh, try not to let these guys grab you.

It’s impossible for a fan of From Software’s Dark Souls or Bloodborne to not see Nioh so clearly mimicking those games’ distinct styles. But the franchises Nioh cribs from rely so deeply on repetition, muscle memory, and hundreds of total hours of perseverance that even the smallest changes in dodge timing or invincibility frames are incredibly obvious. And Nioh changes a whole lot more than dodge timing.

One immediate difference Souls fans will notice after booting up the latest from Team Ninja (Dead or Alive, Ninja Gaiden) is that it’s not set in some ashy, dying Western fantasy world. While the tutorial starts in the Tower of London circa 1600, it’s less than an hour before you wash up on the shores of a very vibrant-looking Japan. Don’t let the looks fool you, though—this locale is no less hostile than From Software’s Lordran or Drangleic.

The time period places the game right at the tail end of Japan’s Sengoku period, which is more important than you might think. Another of Nioh‘s departures from the Souls games is a plot that’s plainly presented, if not exactly straightforward.

You play as The Witcher’s Geralt of Rivia “William,” a character based on the real-world William Adams—the first Western samurai and one of only a handful to ever exist. Circumstances draw him to Japan, where he becomes embroiled in the war-torn politics of the era. The oddly descriptive, intricate plot is told partly through encyclopedia entries on the fictionalized historical figures William does business with, interspersed with dramatic shots of shoguns staring each other down in council chambers.
