CNN didn’t get the real Barbara Walters to appear on its New Year’s Eve countdown show, but they got the next best thing. Saturday Night Live alum Cheri Oteri, who famously impersonated Walters during her time on the sketch series, revived her impression of the 20/20 anchor just before 2020 actually began. “I’m afraid retirement didn’t suit me as much as people had hoped. And now that I’m trending on social media… I’ve decided to dust off my power suit and get back in the game,” Oteri’s Walters announced to co-hosts Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen. “I can finally say with confidence: This is… 2020.” The character then “revealed” her next TV project, after admitting that she’s “not necessarily” interested in returning to The View, which the real Walters co-hosted from 1997 to 2014. (“Though I do miss Joy [Behar] poking fun at me behind my back, and Whoopi [Goldberg]’s questionable footwear and sassy black quips,” she confessed.) Instead, Walters unveiled plans for a new docuseries that will follow her day-to-day life, chronicling her “relatable struggles” (which aren’t very relatable, after all) and addressing hot topics like global warming, the presidential election and, naturally, “who farted?” Cohen managed to keep a (mostly) straight face during Oteri’s bit, but the same can’t be said for Cooper: He was doubled over in laughter for most of her appearance, eventually sinking out of frame altogether. Watch Oteri’s Walters impression below, then drop a comment with your thoughts: Just over a year after first cryptically alluding to “multiple physical assaults” on the NCIS set, Pauley Perrette has shed more light on her claims — and in doing do put series lead Mark Harmon in the crosshairs. In a Friday tweet that didn’t appear to be in response to anything in particular, the NCIS alum said, “NO I AM NOT COMING BACK! EVER! (Please stop asking?) I am terrified of Harmon and him attacking me. I have nightmares about it.” Two hours later, she followed that up with close-up photos of a crew member who, lore has it, was bitten by Harmon’s dog on-set in October 2016. (TMZ reported at the time that the crew member had been “roughhousing” with the then three-year-old pit bull mix, and required 16 stitches for his injury.) “You think I didn’t expect blow back? You got me wrong,” Perrette’s second Friday tweet read. “THIS happened To my crew member and I fought like hell to keep it from happening again! To protect my crew! And then I was physically assaulted for saying NO!? and I lost my job.” CBS did not immediately respond to TVLine’s request for comment on Perrette’s June 7 tweets. Perrette last appeared in NCIS’ penultimate Season 15 episode (airing May 8, 2018), in which Abby committed herself to following in fallen colleague Clayton Reeves’ footsteps by shepherding a charity for homeless women. Abby shared heartfelt, in-person farewells with everyone on the team… except for Harmon’s Gibbs, with whom she instead exchanged a conspicuously edited ASL good-bye across his front lawn: Days after said NCIS sendoff, Perrette alluded on Twitter to “multiple physical assaults” on the CBS drama’s set, but declined to go into any detail. “I refused to go low, that’s why I’ve never told publicly what happened,” she wrote then. “I’m trying to do the right thing, but maybe silence isn’t the right thing about crime.” She also claimed that a “very rich, very powerful publicity ‘machine’” was “keeping [her] silent,” and yet she cryptically maintained: “He did it.” CBS at the time responded with a statement saying, “Over a year ago, Pauley came to us with a workplace concern. We took the matter seriously and worked with her to find a resolution. We are committed to a safe work environment on all our shows.” Perrette is set to return to CBS in 2020, starring alongside Jane the Virgin‘s Jaime Camil in the midseason comedy Broke.

There are many, many games that recreate the look of 8-bit and 16-bit games, but there isn’t a lot for people who grew up with the first generation of 3D-oriented consoles. Where’s their nostalgia hit? Playtonic Games is taking care of it. The studio is releasing a “64-bit Tonic” for Yooka-Laylee that gives the game a very appropriate Nintendo 64 flair. Yes, you too can revisit the heady days of the mid-’90s with tube TV fuzziness, muddy textures, crude lighting effects and even choppy frame rates.
The 64-bit mode is coming “soon” to PC, PS4, Switch and Xbox One players as a free update. You probably won’t want to play through the entire game this way, but it’s a good reminder of just how far 3D gaming has come in the space of two decades. Besides, this is about as close to another N64 Banjo-Kazooie sequel as you’re likely to get.

The Other Side of the Wind is finally complete — or rather “complete.” Nominally. The final film by the great Orson Welles (assuming The Deep never sees the light of day) begins with a title card explaining that this version, restored by the folks at Netflix, exists as “an attempt to honor and complete” Welles’ original vision, the key word being “attempt.” With so much footage left un-shot and unedited during its original production, no version of the film today can feel truly whole. And yet, despite its haphazard meandering, The Other Side of the Wind, in the form it will now be known, is a fascinating meta-textual artifact on the very piecing together of art and intention.
Despite Welles’ basing the film’s lead, director Jake Hannaford (John Huston), on the late Ernest Hemingway, one cannot but help peer into the past and see the aging, drunken Hannaford as an analogue for Welles himself. The film, which feels cobbled together from too many takes and angles, is framed through several fictitious layers that add up to a rightly mind-boggling whole. There’s The Other Side of the Wind, the Orson Welles mockumentary completed by Netflix. This 4:3 mockumentary is the story of Jake Hannaford’s The Other Side of the Wind, a last-ditch attempt at an avant-garde career revival, a dream-like film that Hannaford is unable to complete once his star walks off set. Then of course, there is Hannaford’s The Other Side of the Wind itself, a bizarre piece that we see unfold in all its Widescreen glory as Hannaford’s collaborators attempt to make sense of it. Finally, and perhaps most vitally, there’s the very framing of the mockumentary: the events we see, from the filming to the wrap-party to the screening of the Hannaford’s dailies, are presented to us posthumously; in the world of this mockumentary, Jake Hannaford, director of the fictitious The Other Side of the Wind, has died before completing the film. What glimpses of it we see are other people’s attempts to make sense of it.
Time is a strange thing. Decades after this concept was written and (mostly) filmed, we now bear witness to this very dynamic made real. “Shot Missing” says a screen as witnessed by those left to sort through Hannaford’s mess. “Shot Missing” indeed; Welles never managed to film Hannaford’s actual death scene. We’re told about it, rather than shown, so it never feels entirely real. As we see journalists and other filmmakers attempt to create their own version of Hannaford, often while interviewing him face to face — “Can one truly know the artist?” Welles seems to ask — the form this search for Hannaford takes is but a similarly attempted re-creation. An approximation, one might say, of Welles’ original intentions, drawn from decades of the man’s work and the notes he left behind. And yet, just as Hannaford’s final film was a departure from his norms (it plays like a half-formed Antonioni), The Other Side of the Wind feels unlike any other Welles production, more in line with John Cassavetes and his improvisational cinéma vérité than the formalism of Touch of Evil or Citizen Kane.

In the mockumentary, Huston’s John Hannaford, a man whose aura feels impenetrable, establishes a complicated relationship to religion and femininity. He believes God to be a woman, but he doesn’t respect God, considering himself above her. He empowers his actress Oja Kodar with a rifle, enlisting her help to shoot dummy doubles of the actor who left him, but he never lets her speak. Hannaford’s pseudo-religious musings undoubtedly cast the director in the role of The Creator — he is imposing, and those around him seem to worship him even while they question his motives — but the most interesting perspective on this dynamic comes from Hannaford’s protégé Brooks Otterlake (Peter Bogdanovich) who describes himself as an apostle; where other journalists struggle to piece together a coherent image of Hannaford and his work, Otterlake claims to be writing the definitive Hannaford memoir, from a place of proximity. In the world of cinema, where meaning is indirect to begin with, those with the power over its translation and transmutation are as important as the prophets themselves; who, finally, will determine the meaning of Hannaford’s work and his career?
Who, one might be compelled to ask, will determine what The Other Side of the Wind was truly meant to be?
The mockumentary portions of the film are disorienting, presenting Hannaford, Otterlake and others (including Susan Strasberg as Juliette Rich, a parody of Pauline Kael) from a multitude of perspectives, often in quick succession. The film switches rapidly from colour to black-and-white and back again as the viewing party for Hannaford’s still-incomplete film is captured from every conceivable angle. Everyone peers in on Hannaford. Everyone is interviewed about Hannaford, and one would think that from all these varying perspectives, a clear portrait might emerge. And yet, Hannaford’s actions remain mysterious — Why does he create and destroy so many doubles of the actor who abandoned him? Is it a display of power, or a search for it? — rendering the film’s own form, a found-footage medley from every external perspective, little more than a fool’s errand. No perspective featured in the mockumentary is Hannaford’s; the only time we see through his eyes are when his The Other Side of the Wind unfolds on screen and a studio boss attempts to discern the meaning of the scenes he shot; he is, expectedly, way off the mark, unable to interpret the most basic cinematic language. As last hurrahs go, this one is vicious.
There’s little sense to be made of Welles’ The Other Side of the Wind as a straightforward narrative — even at a mere two hours, it feels like a far lengthier affair — but in all its swapping between stories, timelines and perspectives, it proves to be an alluring experiment. The experiment in question is carried out not by Welle,s of course, but by Netflix (and by editor Bob Murawski) because what we’re seeing isn’t so much an Orson Welles film about the unknowability of the artist as it is that very unknowability made manifest. We were never going to see whatever Orson Welles had originally intended, though perhaps this best-case-scenario is rightfully obtuse, making even more impossible a truly complete understanding of an artist whose name we all know.

Diesel trains are noisy and polluting, but on stretches of non-electrified rail, what else are you going to do? Hydrogen trains are one option, but now there’s another: Canadian transportation firm Bombardier has (re-)introduced the battery powered train. In Berlin, it launched the Bombardier Talent 3 electro-hybrid train, the first of its kind in Europe in over 60 years, the company said. The train took its maiden voyage with local luminaries including the federal commissioner for rail transport and the Brandenburg transport minister.
“Around 40 percent of the German rail network is not electrified,” said Bombardier German transportation chief, Michael Fohrer. “The Bombardier battery-operated train is an attractive option to counter that, both economically and ecologically speaking.” Developed with $ 4 million worth of support from the German government, the train uses Bombardier’s MITRAC powertrain (below) that allows for different combinations of motors and batteries.
The train that ran on the weekend can go about 40 km (25 miles) on a charge, but future version will be able to run for up to 100 km (62 miles). It generates no exhaust and is 90 percent efficient in terms of efficiency and recyclability, Bombardier said.
Germany is trying hard to reduce its dependence on diesel trains. Earlier this year, Alstom unveiled the Coradia iLint, a hydrogen-powered train that will one day run for about 1,000 km (620 miles) on a tank of hydrogen. “On non-electrified or only partially electrified routes, the motto is: move away from diesel on the tracks and toward cleaner and more environmentally-friendly mobility,” said Germany’s state secretary for rail transport Enak Ferlemann.
Germany has a ways to go to catch up with Holland, which runs 100 percent of its trains on wind power. It’s trying to catch up, though: In 2019, operator Deutsche Bahn (DB) will start a twelve-month trial run with passengers on Bombardier’s 40 km-range prototype train near Lake Constance in Germany’s southwest.

In late 2016, Google’s security team scrambled to fix a critical vulnerability that allowed attackers to gain unfettered root access to Android devices by using a relatively new class of exploit that manipulates data stored in memory chips. Now, 21 months later, many of the same researchers behind the attack, dubbed Drammer, are back to say that a large number of Android phones and tablets remain vulnerable to the rooting attacks because the patches Google deployed weren’t adequate.
Both Drammer and the newly disclosed RAMpage attacks exploit Rowhammer, a class of exploit that alters data stored in memory chips by repeatedly accessing the internal rows where individual bits are stored. By “hammering” the rows thousands of times a second, the technique causes the bits to flip, meaning 0s are changed to 1s and vice versa.
The original Rowhammer attack against PCs made it possible for an untrusted computer application to gain nearly unfettered system privileges or to bypass security sandboxes designed to keep malicious code from accessing sensitive operating system resources. A later variation allowed JavaScript hosted on websites to effect the same security-sensitive bitflips.

Enlarge / Hellllloooooo Chrome OS tablets. (credit: Valentina Palladino)
Chrome OS took over schools with clamshells, but now Google is shaking things up with slabs. After a spring announcement, Acer has built the first Chrome OS tablet, the $ 329 Chromebook Tab 10, to give teachers and students a more flexible device to use for schoolwork both in and out of the classroom.
Some might perk up at the idea of a lightweight yet durable tablet with a 2048×1536 display and a built-in Wacom stylus running Chrome OS, but this device (like many other Chrome OS devices) will only be sold in the education market. While regular consumers may not be able to get their hands on the Chromebook Tab 10, however, there will be more Chrome OS tablets to come that will be sold to the general public.
After spending some time with this inaugural Chrome OS tablet, it would be remiss to think that it’s essentially the same thing as an Android tablet—devices that are largely unsupported at this point. We may not be traditional educators or students at this point, but Ars tested the Chromebook Tab 10 with a few things in mind: how does the Chrome OS experience translate on a tablet sans-keyboard? And, perhaps more importantly, can Chrome OS bring Google’s tablet category back from the dead?

Star Wars Battlefront II’s pay-to-win loot crate fiasco more or less ended when Electronic Arts made it so the game’s Star Card power ups could only be earned through gameplay. A month later, the company is cautiously reintroducing the buy-with-real-money Crystal currency, but you can only use it to snag cosmetic upgrades. Oh, and there’s a new stormtroopers-versus-ewoks mode that will be available on April 18th for a limited time.
Set during the events of Return of the Jedi, Ewok Hunt is a last-man-standing battle pitting players on either side of the imperial occupation of Endor’s moon. A lone player starts as one of the stealthy, furred natives hunting down the others, who are all stormtroopers. When someone playing one of the Empire’s foot soldiers dies, they rejoin the game as an Ewok, whittling down the survivors until they’re all eliminated or they last long enough to be extracted.
The reintroduction of microtransactions-bought Crystals is potentially dicey, but EA made it clear in the announcement and FAQ that they can only be used to purchase items that don’t affect gameplay. Plus, if you want, you can use the play-generated Credits currency to pick up these ‘Appearances’ instead. The Battlefront II team has added 50 more of the cosmetic options to the game with this update, including Han and Leia in their Endor outfits as well as The Last Jedi costumes for Rey and Kylo (no, not shirtless).
Now that the pay-to-win furor has died down, the game’s team will release more limited-time modes like Ewok Hunt along with ‘Seasons’; Season Two will start in May, and news about it will drop early that month.
