The tactics used by Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis to relocate 50 migrants to Martha's Vineyard last week resemble tactics used by southern segregationists during the 1960s "Reverse Freedom Rides," CNN reported.
In a tweet, Representatives of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library also recounted the 1960s segregationalist effort.
"To embarrass Northern liberals and humiliate Black people, southern White Citizens' Councils started their so-called "Reverse Freedom Rides," giving Black people one-way tickets to northern cities with false promises of jobs, housing, and better lives," the library said.
On Wednesday, 50 migrants arrived in Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts without any warning. DeSantis claimed responsibility for the two flights. The migrants were flown from Texas to Martha's Vineyard as part of an effort by Republican governors to protest the Biden administration's immigration policies.
DeSantis was following in the footsteps of several other GOP governors who in recent weeks have been sending migrants to liberal cities. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has bused about 8,000 migrants to Washington D.C. and another 2,200 to New York City, in protest of Biden's immigration policies.
NPR reported that the migrants thought they were headed to Boston for jobs. Three migrants told the outlets that a woman identified as "Perla" promised them expedited work permits in Boston.
"She (Perla) offered us help. Help that never arrived," one migrant, named by the outlet as Andres, told NPR. "Now we are here. We got on the plane with a vision of the future, of making it."

In 1962, the segregationist group called the White Citizens' Council falsely promised hundreds of Black Americans housing and jobs before sending them to cities like New York and Philadelphia in an effort called the "Reverse Freedom Rides," CNN reported.
"Reverse Freedom Rides are not well known among many people, and it's important to understand that this tactic of using people as political pawns was used 60 years ago by segregationists and White supremacists," Tanisha Sullivan, president of the NAACP Boston branch told CNN.
"It's important for us to amplify and highlight that parallel, so people can see that this type of racist behavior and these racist tactics are still being used today," she added.

]]>President of Ukraine/Telegram
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Sunday that Ukrainian forces had retaken three settlements in eastern and southern parts of the country amid a wider counter-offensive.
Zelenskyy, speaking on his Telegram channel, did not specify the locations of the reported gains. One was a settlement in the eastern region of Donetsk, he said, adding that two further settlements "in the south of our country" were also liberated.
The Ukrainian military also reported artillery and air strikes on more than a dozen targets in the southern region of Kherson on Sunday, according to CNN.
President Vladimir Putin's forces have overtaken territory in eastern and southern Ukraine since the invasion began in February. Ukrainian troops began a widescale counter-offensive in the south of the country at the end of August.
Insider was unable to verify Zelenskyy's report. On Monday, the UK Ministry of Defense released a map showing sites of "likely Ukrainian advance" in three southern locations.

It did not indicate any advance in the east.
Donetsk represents about one half of the Donbas region, in Ukraine's east, where Russian forces have been attacking Ukraine for eight years, long predating the invasion of February 2022.
Russian-backed separatist action led to the formation of the "Donetsk People's Republic" in 2014, which Putin formally recognized on February 22 this year. (Most countries, including the west and the UN, continue to consider it Ukrainian territory.)
The south of Ukraine faced a brutal onslaught early in Putin's invasion, likely in an effort to connect Russian-annexed Crimea to the strategic southern port of Odessa. It has seen Russian forces occupy — and inflict catastrophic destruction on — cities such as Kherson and Mariupol.
In his address, Zelenskyy repeated his assertion that the war would end only with the retaking of Crimea. "We will make Crimea one of the best, most comfortable places in Europe," he said.
He also said he had spoken with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and repeated his request for Europe to impose a visa ban on Russian tourists.
"Europe is a land of values, not Disneyland for supporters of terror," Zelenskyy said.

Jody Allard is a writer living in Seattle. She writes primarily about parenting, health and social justice.
Desiree’s hand was outstretched, offering me the crumpled packet of Limon. I didn’t know what Limon was, but I saw other girls sneaking tastes of the powder when the nuns weren’t looking. I took the packet from Desiree, dipped my finger in and tasted it. It was so salty and sour, I winced as it hit my tongue.
Santa Maria was a town full of migrant workers who came up from Mexico to work in central California’s strawberry fields, enrolling their kids in school until they moved on to the next town. I was one of the only white kids in my class and I stuck out like a sore thumb. I was also a loner, different from everyone else, and my Hispanic classmates loved to remind me of that. They’d switch to Spanish when I tried to play with them, rolling their eyes and laughing, or they’d point at me and yell “White girl!” and then run away.
I saw my whiteness as a handicap … something I’d never overcome.
From then on, I saw my whiteness as a handicap, like the missing fingers on my right hand, something I’d never overcome. I sank into myself, disappearing into books and other worlds where people belonged, cherishing those stolen moments eating Limon in the church pews. My family moved to a small logging town in rural Washington state when I was 12. The move came as a relief; I’d been angling to get out of Santa Maria for years, and the whiteness of our new home felt comforting.
There were only a few Black kids in my new school. I never wondered what it was like for them, never spoke up when people called them names. I wasn’t interested in standing out; I had friends for the first time, and no one called me “white girl.” One day during history class, we broke into small groups to discuss affirmative action. “Racism doesn’t exist anymore,” I said. “Affirmative action is punishing white people for being white. It’s reverse racism, like how Mexican kids at school in California made fun of me for being white.” No one argued, nodding in agreement that what I’d said was a fact, like the sky is blue.
I’d never been to the South before moving to Charleston, South Carolina, where my husband was transferred by the Navy. I didn’t believe anyone actually flew the Confederate flag or thought that the South would rise again, but I was wrong. If you asked people — white people — you’d learn that the South was poised for a comeback. I wasn’t sure what they meant or if their plans included a return to slavery, but I also didn’t want to ask.
The first time I heard someone use the N-word, I figured I must’ve been mistaken.
My husband and I lived on a Navy base a few miles outside the city. The closer you got to the center, the whiter it got, until there was nothing but white people. The grand, historic homes that filled Charleston’s old town were almost entirely occupied by white people, but just a few blocks away, the neighborhood changed abruptly. There were no historic homes, only shacks, some with tarps covering holes in the roofs, and from there stretched Blackness all the way into the suburbs. I did my grocery shopping at the Piggly Wiggly. People were friendly and welcoming, evidence, I assumed, of Southern hospitality. So the first time I heard someone use the N-word, I figured I must’ve been mistaken. After the fifth or sixth time, I knew I wasn’t.
The racism was blatant, but my silence in the face of it forced me to confront my own. It hit me that every schoolteacher I’d ever had was white. The nuns were white. I may have been taunted and teased as a little girl, but I always saw myself reflected in the faces of people in power. I thought I was the good guy because I would never use a racial slur, but when someone else did, I never spoke up, not in high school and not in line at the Piggly Wiggly.
My marriage didn’t last, and soon I found myself on a plane back to Washington with three kids and $ 147 to my name. My parents didn’t have much, but they paid for our tickets home. I knew what it was like to be broke, but I’d never felt trapped by poverty until I was too poor to leave my husband. As the plane climbed, my thoughts drifted to the Black neighborhoods in Charleston I used to drive through. All I had to do to escape discrimination was move somewhere new. Where could the residents of those neighborhoods go?
I wondered how I could have complained about reverse racism and claimed that racism was dead. I had no idea what the hell I was talking about, and I certainly didn’t know what it was like for people of color. I was too shy to talk to them, afraid of colors I didn’t understand and of being labeled different again. All those years spent crying reverse racism, I had been racist. I was still racist.
I was shaken from my thoughts by a flight attendant offering me a drink. The soda I ordered was predictably sweet, but for the first time I noticed the bitter taste it left behind.

Weight loss diet dubbed “reverse fasting” could be the best way to lose pounds.
Fasting is often met with trepidation as it can sometimes mean restricting meals, resulting in extreme hunger pangs.
However, reverse fasting does not include skipping either breakfast or dinner.
It instead changes the way and time of day that food is eaten.
Reverse fasting changes the times of meals to ensure the fasting period is later in the day.
This means that dinner is eaten at 5pm or 6pm instead of 8pm, a later time that many families choose to eat at.
This then means that the person fasts for 12 to 15 hours overnight due to the earlier evening meal.
When they wake up, they can then eat breakfast at 6am or 7am without skipping a meal but still partaking in the fast.
The fast is then when the person is sleeping, meaning fewer feelings of hunger that may have been felt in the day.
Reverse fasting works just like intermittent fasting by aiding weight loss, reducing blood pressure as well as the resting heart rate.
It works by a metabolic switch taking place in the liver where the body then uses fat for energy.
The person then wakes up with a meal in the morning, preventing the starving feeling that is felt.
The organs in the body are also believed to follow a circadian rhythm, in that digestion can slow down later in the day when the sun goes down.
Therefore by fasting during the night time, where digestion is slower, it can be better to then eat in the day during the lighter hours where digestion is faster.
It is also often equated with the caveman diet – while this means eating basic foods with minimal processes, it can also be in reference to the fasting they once did during the seasons.
A study by the University of Surrey also found that by changing breakfast and dinner times, weight loss could be enhanced.
Published in the Journal of Nutritional Sciences, 16 adults ate breakfast 90 minutes later and ate dinner 90 minutes earlier.
The study found that more than half had a reduced appetite due to the smaller time frame of eating.
Fat loss was also almost twice as much. While the study is small, the results could be used for a larger case study.
Jonathan Johnston, co-author of the study, said: “We are now going to use these preliminary findings to design larger, more comprehensive studies of time-restricted feeding.”

A lack of B12 causes the body to produce abnormally large red blood cells which can’t function properly, which can cause anaemia.
Anaemia is the general term for having either fewer red blood cells than normal or having an abnormally low amount of haemoglobin in each red blood cell.
This can then lead to problems with the nervous system and heart conditions.
Our bodies don’t make vitamin B12, so it’s important to get it through a balanced diet.
Good sources of B12 include beef, pork, eggs, milk, cheese and fish.
However, it is possible to feed your body with B12 through injections of the vitamin.
According to the NHS, a B12 deficiency is usually treated with injections of the vitamin in a form called hydroxocobalamin.
Injections will be given every other day for two weeks, or until symptoms start improving.
After the initial two weeks, further treatment will depend on whether the cause of the deficiency is related to your diet.
However, the most common cause of a B12 deficiency is pernicious anaemia, which isn’t related to your diet.
If this is the case, you will usually need to have an injection of hydroxocobalamin every three months for the rest of your life.
If you’ve had neurological symptoms – symptoms that affect your nervous system, such as numbness or tingling in your hands and feet – caused by a vitamin B12 deficiency, you’ll be referred to a haematologist.
This may mean you need to have injections every two months. Your haematologist will then advise on how long you need to keep taking the injections.
If, on the other hand, your B12 deficiency is caused by a lack of the vitamin in your diet, you will be prescribed vitamin B12 tablets to take every day between meals.
Alternatively, you may need to have an injection of hydroxocobalamin twice a year.
Once your B12 levels have returned to normal and your diet has improved, you may be advised to stop taking the tablets.
People who struggle to include enough B12 in their diet, however, may have to take tablets for life.
Sources of vitamin B12, which are alternatives to meat and dairy products, are yeast extract, fortified breakfast cereals and soy products.
Symptoms of a vitamin B12 deficiency include: extreme tiredness, a lack of energy, pins and needles, mouth ulcers, a sore and red tongue, muscle weakness, disturbed vision, psychological problems and issues with memory, understanding and judgement.
“It’s important for vitamin B12 anaemia to be diagnosed and treated as soon as possible because, although many of the symptoms improve with treatment, some problems caused by the condition can be irreversible,” said the NHS.
The legislation in question was a law passed by the Republican-controlled state legislature last year and signed by the governor at the time, Eric Greitens, a Republican , which would have allowed employees in unionized private workplaces to opt out of belonging to a union and paying dues. Currently, unions in Missouri, as part of collective-bargaining agreements with employers, can require that an entire workplace be unionized. In those workplaces, even if someone isn’t keen to join the union, taking the job requires him to do so.
Missouri Republicans had hoped to bar that requirement, as 27 states have. Unions fiercely oppose such laws, partly on principle and partly because the laws represent an existential threat: Research has shown that when states have imposed such laws, known among supporters as right-to-work laws, union membership declines. So in Missouri, labor organizers collected enough signatures to put a measure on the state ballot, Proposition A, in order to put the issue to a vote. Then, according to The Wall Street Journal, they outraised their opponents five to one.
In positioning the vote as a milestone, Trumka is surely being self-serving, but he is hardly alone. The defeat of Proposition A is a defensive move—meant to maintain the status quo rather than actually make it any easier for workers to unionize. Still, it carried symbolic weight. Pointing to last spring’s walkouts by teachers in West Virginia, Oklahoma, and elsewhere, many commentators and politicians described Missouri’s vote as the most recent positive sign for the U.S. labor movement’s future. On Wednesday, The New York Times editorial board wrote, “Tuesday’s vote and the popular support for teacher strikes in red states show that unions have the wind at their backs for the first time in a long while.” On Rolling Stone’s website, Bob Moser said, “Workers across the country now have a model for going on the offensive against the rising plutocracy, rather than watching helplessly while wages continue to stagnate and inequality continues to widen.”
Those who are optimistic about unions’ future have some evidence supporting their views besides Tuesday’s vote. For one thing, political support for unions is rising in the United States. Gallup found last summer that 60 percent of people approved of labor unions, the highest level of support in 10 years. (Gallup hasn’t published figures for this summer.) In a poll conducted amid all the teacher strikes last spring, 52 percent of respondents said they approved of teachers leaving the classroom to strike for higher wages.
And yet, it’s not clear that popular support for unions, and for policies that help them retain members, is the right measure of their strength. Gallup’s poll last summer made headlines, but, with a couple of exceptions, public support of unions has been more or less constant: For several decades, as far back as the early 1970s, about 60 percent of people have said they approve of unions. And yet union membership has consistently declined in the United States: Last year, membership stood at the historic low of 11 percent, cut nearly in half from where it was in 1983, when the Bureau of Labor Statistics began tracking it. In the 1950s, according to separate data, more than one-third of workers were unionized. So while popular support for labor might seem to be a proxy for unions’ strength, it’s actually a bit beside the point.
The most consistent factor in determining union support seems to be the strength of the economy. Perhaps counterintuitively, support for unions and corporations follow similar trends, rising when times are good, and falling when they’re bad. When people have a job, they feel good about those that helped them get it—their unions, but also their companies. When they’re unemployed, their loyalty flags.
To understand what, besides public opinion, could really lead to a revival in union membership, it’s instructive to look at what was behind the decline. The Taft-Hartley Act of 1947, which severely restricted unions’ activities and allowed for the passage of state right-to-work laws, played an important role. Perhaps more significant though, especially recently, has been the rise of a globalized and automated economy. Those forces have decimated middle-class jobs in manufacturing and other traditionally unionized industries. They have also contributed to lower prices for U.S. consumers, which, in turn, has created jobs in industries that are built around selling stuff. The retail sector is now one of the biggest employers in the United States; it pays very little, and its jobs tend to be part-time and temporary—which discourages unionization, since employees would rather not pay dues for a job they don’t expect to hold for long.
All of this didn’t just happen. It has been helped along by decades of economic and business policies implemented by governments led by both Democrats and Republicans. Donald Trump’s trade protectionism and disdain for some Silicon Valley companies notwithstanding, it’s hard to imagine a reversal in the trends toward globalization and automation. If Trumka and his colleagues would like to position their recent success against the right-to-work movement as a proxy for union strength, and in turn for people’s ability to repair a rigged system, he may have underestimated the extent of the rigging.
