CBS’ NCIS marked its 400-episode milestone with a look at the case that first introduced Gibbs to Ducky — and then most unexpectedly resurfaced four decades later.

Starting off in 1980, we saw how a vehicular accident left dead a Navy accountant who seemingly had made an unauthorized withdrawal to the tune of a sack full of money (which also contained a gun). And yet the victim hadn’t been killed in the accident, but via an earlier stabbing. Oh, and there’s a body growing restless in his car trunk — that of one Sgt. Leroy Jethro Gibbs.

Meanwhile in the “present”/December 2019, a plot to entice Gibbs — who’s a bit prickly, due to his and Shannon’s wedding anniversary — to join in a night out celebrating the 20th anniversary of McGee deciding to be an NCIS agent is interrupted by the discovery of a body in HQ’s basement. The deceased, Special Agent Ronald Calloway of the Carolina office, doesn’t exist; he sneaked in with bogus credentials the night before, and wandered around before dying of asphyxiation next to a server that connects all the NCIS databases.

McGee determines that “Calloway” suffered a severe asthma attack that had been triggered by mold spores. When he then reveals that the man’s name was really Maurice Zucado, it rings a big ol’ bell with Gibbs, who remembers him as a “really bad guy” from “a whole family of bad guys,” having had a run in with Maurice’s cousin many years ago.

That cousin, we see in 1980, was Ringo Zucado aka the Navy accountant who had thrown Gibbs into his car trunk. The NIS agents working the case ask why Gibbs, who had been accepted to sniper school, was in town, and he explains that he came for a friend’s wedding, which he plans to attend with his girlfriend Shannon. He was out shopping for a suit when Ringo sneaked up on him and jabbed a gun in his side. Just then, the driver of the car that hit Ringo shows up in the squad room… and it’s young Dr. Donald Mallard.

As Gibbs and the doc become fast friends and spend several days hitting pubs, the latter realizes that Gibbs has ended things with Shannon. (Worse, he did it over the phone!) Just then, younger Jonny Zucado and his cousin Maurice confront the gents, taking them to a hideaway for a beating. Jonny wants to know if they told the NIS agents anything Ringo revealed, and Ducky explains that Ringo died long before the cops arrived on the scene. Deeming the men of no value now, Jonny puts a gun to Gibbs’ head, only to be warned that the Marines will never stop looking for the killer of one of their own. Later, at Ducky’s place with the nice wainscoting, he and Gibbs surmise that there must be a mole at NIS — and Ducky has an idea who it is.

NCIS 400Back in the present, Gibbs informs Ducky that the Zucados are back. But what was Maurice up to in the building’s bowels? Gibbs says that Maurice’s cousin Jonny would know, but McGee reports that the family boss is in hiding. Luckily, the pacemaker-wearing Jonny checks in with his doctor, so the team is able to find him and bring him in. Jack and Vance watch as Gibbs reunites with the “one that got away” in the interrogation room. Jonny tells Gibbs he has no idea what Maurice was up to, nor can the feds hold onto him due to charges of bribing a government official that have suddenly been dropped. (“You couldn’t get me 40 years ago, and you ain’t gonna get me now,” Jonny gloats.) Indeed, the star witness in the bribery case against Jonny soon turns up dead.

Gibbs is anxious to chase the case, and a wary Vance allows it, provided his agent cools off a bit. Similarly worried about Gibbs, Ducky suggests to his longtime friend that he is letting an old grudge get under his skin — and perhaps  said grudge is with Ducky himself, seeing as back in the day he nudged Gibbs to make things right with Shannon, and thus set himself up for double the tragedy down the line. But Shannon and daughter Kelly “were the best thing that happened to me,” Gibbs tells Ducky. “I don’t blame you I owe you.”

As he and Jimmy examine the murdered bribery witness, Ducky mentions how would have given up on treating living patients, if it had not been for the Zucados. Cue the next flashback to 1980, where Ducky asks the NIS ME to show him Ringo’s body — and he notices the distinct freckling that is indicative of LEOPARD syndrome. Ducky had noticed the same freckling on one of the construction workers in the soon-to-be-orange NIS squad room. And if said guy is related to the Zucados, he must be the mole.

Back in the present, Kasie reports that Maurice’s charred notebook contained a map of NCIS, written by an Emilio Zucado — aka the construction guy from 40 years ago, Brought in for questioning, Emilio sings like a canary, explaining how Jonny embedded him with the painting crew to gain access to an evidence locker, where the key that was found on Ringo back in the day was stored. But upon pinching the key, emilio realized the feds were onto him, so he hid it inside the wall. And that is what Maurice had come looking for in 2019. McGee saws a hole in the wall and finds the card key, which opens a Swiss deposit box into which Ringo had hidden the millions he embezzled from the Navy. He was making a run for it when he carjacked Gibbs and stuffed him in the trunk.

Back in 1980, Ducky prepared a “going away” dinner for sniper school-bound Gibbs, though Jethro takes umbrage at his friend’s plan to cook the steaks in an oven. Grilling them in Ducky’s fireplace instead, Gibbs invites the doc to join NIS and maybe one day get a second chance at the Zucados. Ducky in turn has advice for Gibbs, suggesting he is afraid of not finding, but losing, love. “Love is scary, but it can’t be optional,” Ducky insists. Picking up on Ducky having loved and lost himself, Gibbs asks, “What was her name?” Maggie, Ducky shares, “but there are some stories even I won’t tell.”  He instead directs Gibbs to Episode 12×03, then urges him, “Don’t make the same mistakes I made,” before the men concur their paths will hopefully cross again one day.

Returning to the present, Gibbs and Torres arrest Jonny — not for bribery, but for Ringo’s 1980 murder. (They had exhumed the body and found Jonny’s DNA found under his fingernails.) “Reunions are fun, aren’t they?” gloats Gibbs, echoing Jonny’s taunt from earlier.

The 400th episode closes with Gibbs in his basement, regarding an old photo of young him and Shannon. He then flashes back to 40 years prior, where he hopped on a pay phone to call Shannon, saying, “I’ve been doing a lot of thinking. And I’d like to ask you a question before I leave — the kind of question a gentleman doesn’t ask over the phone.” And as young Gibbs hops on a five-hour bus ride to see Shannon, his older self rings McGee to see if the gang is still out having drinks — and if he can join them.

Aside from the thrill of seeing and hearing significant machines from all eras of road racing rip around Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, strolling the paddock is a major reason vets return to the Monterey Motorsports Reunion every year. Ever since 1974, retired race cars have been brought together to lap the venerable and beloved road course.

2017 Monterey Motorsports Reunion

It’s perhaps the best bang-for-the-buck event during Monterey Car Week, with single-day ticket prices as low as $ 60. On the Saturday, you’ll see a few cars destined for the lawn at Pebble Beach the next morning and others fresh from a turn at The Quail, and, invariably, some wild machine that you had absolutely no idea ever set tire to pavement.

In the paddock this year, we ran across everything from a noncompetition Subaru 360 to a fearsome Seventies-IMSA DeKon Chevy Monza to a 1905 National, one of the oldest cars to compete this year. It’s a splendid cornucopia of “Omigod! Hey! that!” For some of us, the Motorsports Reunion is an experience without equal during Car Week. After all, while that historic 911 you saw at The Quail may have looked fantastic, wouldn’t it have looked even better diving through Laguna Seca’s Corkscrew?

‘Game of Thrones’ teased one of the most long-awaited reunions in the next trailer and most fans missed it https://briefnews.eu/game-of-thrones-teased-one-of-the-most-long-awaited-reunions-in-the-next-trailer-and-most-fans-missed-it/ https://briefnews.eu/game-of-thrones-teased-one-of-the-most-long-awaited-reunions-in-the-next-trailer-and-most-fans-missed-it/#respond Mon, 31 Jul 2017 03:51:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/game-of-thrones-teased-one-of-the-most-long-awaited-reunions-in-the-next-trailer-and-most-fans-missed-it/ arya game of thrones season seven premiere hboHBO

Warning: Spoilers ahead for “Game of Thrones” season seven, episode three, “The Queen’s Justice.”

“Game of Thrones” fans have long waited for the Starks to be together again in Winterfell. And while we got a brief tease of the family reunion between Sansa and Bran, most people missed that an even bigger reunion was coming next week.

In the teaser for season seven, episode four “The Spoils of War,” fans were given a quick glimpse of Arya Stark approaching Winterfell, her family home. The youngest Stark daughter was heading south to King’s Landing before her old friend Hot Pie informed her that her half-brother, Jon, was named King in the North.

Though Arya didn’t appear in this most recent episode, the preview shows Arya from behind as she looks towards Winterfell, a home she hasn’t seen since Ned brought her and Sansa south to King’s Landing in season one.

Since her father’s death, Arya has had a rough go of it. She’s traveled along the Kingsroad as a boy, been taken captive at Harrenhal, was captured by the Brotherhood without Banners before becoming a captive of Sandor “The Hound” Clegane, and finally learned to become one of the Faceless Men at the House of Black and White in Braavos.

But Arya never forgot who she really was. After finally killing the Waif in season six, Arya returns to the House of Black and White to confront Jaqen in the Hall of Faces. “Finally a girl is no one,” Jaqen says after Arya confronts him for ordering her to be killed.

“A girl is Arya Stark of Winterfell, and I’m going home,” she corrects him.

Since then, Arya has returned to Westeros, murdered Walder Frey and his entire male bloodline, and briefly reunited with her direwolf, Nymeria. Slowly but surely, she’s on her way back to her roots — and avenging her family along the way.

Now, at long last, Arya will be reunited with what’s left of her family in Winterfell: Her sister Sansa, who is currently leading the North while Jon is away; Bran, who finally made it back to Winterfell in episode three; and Jon, who is currently mining dragonglass from beneath Dragonstone.

This will be the first time the Stark siblings have been together since season one. And after the awkward family reunion between Sansa and Bran, we’re hoping Sansa may finally find some comfort in her long-lost sister.

This would also mean that it’s the first time that real-life best friends Maisie Williams (Arya) and Sophie Turner (Sansa) finally get to film together again. Turner told INSIDER that the two friends still get to see each other while filming because they are generally in the same area.

“Well I haven’t worked with her since season one, but we all shoot in Belfast,” Turner said. “So we have sleepovers whenever we’re in Belfast at the same time. She’s my best friend, she’s my soul mate. I love that girl to pieces.”

We can’t wait to see Arya make it back to Winterfell and to see the Stark family (hopefully) back together again.

Game of Thrones season 7: Bosses confirm MAJOR reunions in new series https://briefnews.eu/game-of-thrones-season-7-bosses-confirm-major-reunions-in-new-series/ https://briefnews.eu/game-of-thrones-season-7-bosses-confirm-major-reunions-in-new-series/#respond Thu, 29 Jun 2017 15:17:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/game-of-thrones-season-7-bosses-confirm-major-reunions-in-new-series/

David Benioff and Dan Weiss have teased the seventh instalment, hinting that fans can expect unlikely characters meeting up.

Weiss said: “To me what’s most exciting is being able to play interactions between various characters that for years we haven’t been able to play.

“There’s a whole bunch of reunions and first time meetings that people have been waiting for for a long time and when you put it on paper you just want to do justice to the work that these guys have done building these characters over so many years.

“You want to give them as much as you can,” the boss told Entertainment Weekly.

Fans are eagerly hoping to see a Stark family reunion as Sansa (played by Sophie Turner), Arya (Maisie Williams), Jon (Kit Harington) and Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright) team up to bring down the scheming Lannisters.

Discussing the pace of the show, Benioff explained the difficulties of fitting in every character to the new season, ensuring each of them is given their fair due.

Weiss added: “Things are moving faster because in the world of these characters the war that they’ve been waiting for is upon them.

“The conflicts that have been building the past six years are upon them and those facts give them a sense of urgency that makes them move faster,” he teased.

It comes after Emilia Clarke confirmed that her character Daenerys Targaryen will return for the eighth and final season.

Game of Thrones returns to HBO on July 16 and will be simulcast on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV in the UK at 2am.

General Hospital Q&A: Hillary B. Smith Talks OLTL Legal Eagle Nora's Arrival in Port Charles, Reunions Galore https://briefnews.eu/general-hospital-qa-hillary-b-smith-talks-oltl-legal-eagle-noras-arrival-in-port-charles-reunions-galore/ https://briefnews.eu/general-hospital-qa-hillary-b-smith-talks-oltl-legal-eagle-noras-arrival-in-port-charles-reunions-galore/#respond Tue, 07 Feb 2017 23:20:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/general-hospital-qa-hillary-b-smith-talks-oltl-legal-eagle-noras-arrival-in-port-charles-reunions-galore/ One Life to Live legal eagle Nora Buchanan will be exhibiting her expertise in the courts of Port Charles, when Hillary B. Smith begins a short run on ABC’s General Hospital (starting Monday, March 6).

When OLTL’s broadcast run came to an end in 2011, Smith was among the cast who continued on with the long-running soap’s “version 2.0,” on Prospect Park’s short-lived The Online Network. Meanwhile, costars such as Roger Howarth and Michael Easton migrated their Llanview characters, Todd Manning and John Mcbain, to GH — until a legal kerfuffle with Prospect Park led them to abruptly adopt brand-new Port Charles personae.

That legal stalemate recently came to an end, though, clearing the way for new OLTL/GH “crossovers,” and Smith was the first to be summoned. “It was this fun, out-of-the-blue thing that seemed to work out for everyone,” the two-time Daytime Emmy winner told TVLine, leading into this in-depth Q&A.

TVLINE | How is Nora doing? What has she been up to?
I think she’s kind of been living happily ever after, with Bo (played on OLTL by Robert S. Woods). Doing her legal thing and loving on her husband. I’m wondering if she has grandchildren about now…? I don’t think so.

TVLINE | And what brings her, finally, to Port Charles? The way that judge was barking at her in the casting announcement video, it seems she is caught in quite a legal hullabaloo.
[Laughs] Well, I can’t get into any of the specifics. All I can say is I was asked to come to Port Charles for some sort of legal thing, and that’s what I went and did!

TVLINE | I know there’s a pretty bananapants custody battle in play, involving Lulu….
You’ll get nothing from me! I’m not supposed to say a word. But there are a lot of things cooking in Port Charles. They were talking me through things and I was like, “Really? And that’s going on too? Really?”

What’s really fun was seeing all these old buddies that I hadn’t seen. The first person I saw was oltl-nora-toddRoger Howarth (Franco; Todd, OLTL). And then Michael Easton (Finn; John, OLTL) came around the corner. I met Nancy [Lee] Grahn (Alexis) years ago when she was on Santa Barbara, and we’ve been friends since then. And I knew Genie [Francis, Laura], but I’d never met Carolyn Hennessy (Diane)…. I’ve known [Michelle] Stafford (Nina) for eons, so it was really fun to catch up with her. You may not be working with them, but everyone comes through the makeup room at one point or another, so you see everybody.

TVLINE | As “professional” as we all like to pretend to be, did it ever hit you that Nora Buchanan is having a scene with Laura Spencer? The Nora, the Laura?
I have to tell you, it’s been so many years, Matt, but I guess the fan in me is still there, which gets all giggly and stuff when I see people I have watched for years. So yeah, I guess so! Listen, after all these years of being in this industry and really  stepping aside to enjoy my life and not be on a rigid schedule, it’s fun to step back into it and be doing nothing but General Hospital. It’s fun to shake the rust off and go, “OK, here we go!”

I have to tell you, that is a very, very professional cast. I saw some performances that I just thought were really breathtaking. Most of them are just spot-on. They’re very clear about who they are, who their characters are. They’re very respectful of the show that they’re on, and they’re very respectful of each other. I’d forgotten the “family” feeling you have. I know I how I feel about my One Life to Live family, but it was really nice to see another family in action, and how warm and welcoming they are.

TVLINE | You talk about the caliber of talent. One silver lining of having only four daytime soaps now is that the cast of each is so deep. I mean, GH alone has a Genie Francis, a Michelle Stafford, a Maura West, a Roger Howarth…. It’s kind of crazy.
Yeah, it was really, really impressive. And I hadn’t seen Finola [Hughes, Anna] since she was on All My Children, so that was fun, to see her again. And it was a big surprise for them, since no one knew I was coming. When I walked around a corner, it was like, “Oh my God, what are you doing here?!” Also, a lot of the behind-the-scenes people, like MK Weir, and Gary Tomlin, and Phideaux Xavier, the directors…. I hadn’t seen them since my One Life to Live days. There’s a lot of people from “x” number of years, between As the World Turns, The Doctors and One Life to Live….

TVLINE | You mentioned Roger and Michael — is Nora going to do any double takes when she sees their new characters? Is that a fun thing you’ll be playing?
I… can’t say a word! You’ll have to stay tuned.

TVLINE | Had you given up on the notion of Nora ever appearing on GH?
When it first came up, it wasn’t really in the cards. [When ABC cancelled OLTL] we had the whole Prospect Park thing going on, and I went with Prospect Park [and OLTL‘s online continuation]. When that kind of ended, I figured that with all of the lawsuits going on, Nora was pretty much retired. But when the decision was made and a judicial answer came forth [in December], it was pretty much the next day that I got the call from [GH executive producer/former OLTL boss] Frank [Valentini] — and it was very surprising. I did not expect it at all. It was like, “Hey, you want to come play for a little bit?” I was like, “As long as it’s fun,” and he said, “I’m going to tell you something — you’re going to enjoy these people,” and he was absolutely right. I had forgotten how good everyone is. You watch [on TV] and you go, “Yeah, that’s a great performance,” but when you watch it being taped, it’s so exciting — and there were some great, great performances. It was like riding a bicycle: yeah, you wobble a bit at first, learning the lines, but you just ride along with everyone else.

TVLINE | As far as slipping back into Nora’s skin, is there any particular example of something she does that Hillary doesn’t? Something you had to keep in mind when returning to the role?
That’s a really good question. One thing I had to keep in mind was that Nora was a listener and a watcher. Even though I am a listener and watcher, I’m more of a talker than Nora is! I had to make sure that I was really listening. Also, I’m much more judgemental than Nora is. Nora believes that everyone has a right to a fair trial, a right to representation, where I would be like, “Are you kidding? Guilty!” There’s an impartiality and a passion for the law that drives Nora to believe that regardless of what happened, whatever the client wants, the client deserves — and should get.
