Reactions were mostly volatile after US President Donald Trump retweeted an image that appeared to contain a blood splat over the CNN logo. The image is accompanied by the caption: “Winning.”

Social media exploded on Christmas Eve after Trump, coming on the heels of a tweet in which he bashed the FBI deputy director, retweeted an image of himself lounging in the backseat of a car talking on the phone. On the bottom of the shoe of his crossed leg is a bloody splat accompanied by the CNN logo. A pair of cartoonish bug eyes above the logo completes the picture.

The doctored photo was originally shared on Saturday by a Twitter account “oregon4TRUMP” after Trump had tweeted his presidential accomplishments from his first year in office.

“The Stock Market is setting record after record and unemployment is at a 17 year low,” Trump tweeted proudly on Saturday. “So many things accomplished by the Trump Administration, perhaps more than any other President in first year. Sadly, will never be reported correctly by the Fake News Media!”

In response to Trump’s retweet of the squashed CNN logo, CNN anchor Jake Tapper, who takes issue with the Republican leader on a regular basis, noted via Twitter: “CNN-labeled blood on the sole of his shoe. Retweeted by the President of the United States on Christmas Eve.”

This comment naturally triggered a number of ripostes.

Jason Osborne, a former adviser for the Trump campaign, responded to Tapper by claiming the image on the bottom of Trump’s shoe resembled a squashed bug, while advising the CNN anchor not to “make everything about your network.”

Tapper replied: “The president retweeted an image of blood labeled ‘CNN’ on the sole of his shoe. I noted it. Trump Adviser now faults *me* for ‘making this about’ CNN. God bless us, everyone.”

Other commentators noted that the president’s retweet was made on Christmas Eve, which apparently made the post much less acceptable.

“The President retweeting this on Christmas Eve, w/blood on his shoe representing CNN. White Evangelical Christians: is this the kind of leader that represents Jesus message of love and the hope of Bethlehem?” 

Walter Shaub, former director of the US Office of Government Ethics, slammed the president’s post, saying such “colicky tweets” make the country “look weak.”

Even John Aravosis, who tweeted the original post of the stamped-out CNN logo, seems to have released his tweet more as a piece of sarcasm than any sort of endorsement for the US leader.

“It took all of 15 seconds to confirm that it says ‘CNN.’ But you’re right: A guy who embraces pedophiles, and actual Nazis, would never knowingly retweet a call for violence against the media; THAT’S where he draws the line,” Aravosis tweeted.

CNN has come under increasing attack, not just from Trump, but from many regular Americans who, following the president, now refer to the channel as “fake news.”

Trump supporters point to the cable news channel’s reluctance to report positive news on the Republican leader, while supporting the narrative that Trump somehow conspired with the Russians to steal the 2016 presidential election from Hillary Clinton.

Yet even several CNN employees have admitted, off camera, that the entire ‘Russiagate’ story amounts to a “nothing burger.” In June, for example, Project Veritas uploaded a video that showed CNN political commentator Van Jones referring to the probe into Russia’s alleged meddling in the 2016 election as “a big nothing burger,” and adding, “There is nothing you can do.”

It is certainly not the first time President Trump has been called out over tweets that some say are conducive to spurring violence against journalists.

In July, Trump tweeted a video that showed him pummeling a man at a wrestling event bearing a CNN logo for a head.

Brendan Cox, the husband of a British parliamentarian who was murdered by a reported sympathizer of the British far-right group, Britain First, responded to President Donald Trump’s social-media interactions with the leader of that group Tuesday night.

“I think we probably got used to a degree of absurdity, of outrageous retweets and tweets from the president, but I think this felt like it was a different order,” Cox told CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Tuesday night.

“Here he was retweeting a felon, somebody who was convicted of religiously aggravated harassment of an organization that is a hate-driven organization on the extreme fringes of the far, far right of British politics.”

“This is like the president retweeting the Ku Klux Klan,” Cox said.

Trump earlier on Tuesday shared a string of anti-Muslim videos embedded in tweets from the far-right activist Jayda Fransen. The authenticity of those videos was called into question during a White House press conference on Tuesday afternoon, but press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders refused to acknowledge doubts about their veracity.

Cox spoke to Trump’s temperament in his interview with CNN Tuesday night: “This president has become a purveyor of hate and it’s time we all said enough is enough and we won’t tolerate that no matter what our political disagreements.”

British Prime Minister Theresa May scolded Trump over his retweets, and Trump shot back in a familiar way, using recent terror attacks in that part of the world to snap at May and the UK, one of America’s oldest and most steadfast allies.

US President Donald Trump has gone on an anti-Muslim retweeting spree, sharing three tweets originally posted by the deputy leader of far-right group Britain First Jayda Fransen. A social media employee at the US Department of Defense may have let slip their personal political views on the official DoD Twitter account, retweeting a call for President Donald Trump to resign. The Pentagon quickly disavowed the tweet.

On Thursday afternoon, the official @DeptofDefense Twitter account retweeted a call for President Trump to resign.

“The solution is simple… Roy Moore: Step down from the race. Al Franken: Resign from congress. Donald Trump: Resign from the presidency. GOP: Stop making sexual assault a partisan issue. It’s a crime as is your hypocrisy,” read the tweet from the user @ProudResister.

The erroneous endorsement was noted by Julio Rosas, a reported for the Independent Journal Review (IJR), who snapped a screenshot of the Pentagon Twitter feed. Within four minutes, the retweet had been deleted.

An “authorized operator” of the account “erroneously re-tweeted content that would not be endorsed by the Department of Defense,” Politico reported, citing Colonel Rob Manning. Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White issued a similarly worded statement on Twitter.

The original tweet by @ProudResister remains live.

He also called for Judge Roy Moore, the Republican candidate in the special election for a Senate seat in Alabama, to “step down” after the Washington Post accused him of sexual assault. Moore has rejected the charges as “scurrilous” and “false” and refuses to drop out of the race, despite the Republican leadership in Congress siding against him.

Senator Al Franken (D-Minnesota) was accused Thursday morning of sexually assaulting broadcaster Leeann Tweeden during a USO tour of the Middle East in 2006.

England’s tedious victory over Malta in the World Cup qualifiers was lit up by a pitch invader who stormed the field after social media challenge to reach 400 retweets.

With England making heavy work in dispatching their less-fancied Maltese opponents in a drab affair at the Ta’ Qali National Stadium in Malta, England fan Jake Peachy decided to liven things up by posting on Twitter that he would invade the pitch if he got 400 retweets.     

With viewers clearly more interested in social media than the slow paced game the tweet quickly went viral and easily surpassed the 400 retweet and favorite threshold.

True to his word Peachy scaled the fence and stormed the pitch.

The streaker showed an impressive turn of pace as he gave security guards the run around but all good things come to an end and before long he was caught and escorted away.

However despite potential legal trouble Peachy was the toast of Twitter as many agreed that his pitch invasion was the most entertaining thing to happen in the entire match.

England eventually ran out 4-0 winners after three goals in the last 10 minutes from Ryan Bertrand, Danny Welbeck and Harry Kane. Kane had earlier given them the lead in the 53rd minute.

Days after a white nationalist rally turned deadly in Charlottesville, Virginia, President Donald Trump retweeted an alt-right conspiracy theorist Monday night.

Trump’s retweet originated from Jack Posobiec, a prominent alt-right figure who reportedly was behind a viral post-election photo of a “Rape Melania” sign shown among anti-Trump protesters.

Posobiec, who is a leading pro-Trump internet personality, was also a proponent of the Pizzagate scandal — a 2016 conspiracy that falsely claimed Democrats, including Hillary Clinton, ran a child sex-slavery ring from a pizza parlor in Washington D.C. 

In the message Trump retweeted Monday night, Posobiec shared a link to a story about gun violence in Chicago, in which nine people were killed between Friday and Monday, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

“No national media outrage. Why is that,” Posobiec wrote.

Trump’s retweet follows days of criticism for his hesitation to forcefully condemn the white nationalist movements connected to the violence in Charlottesville. In his first public acknowledgement of the events on Saturday, Trump claimed that “many sides” were responsible. Backlash from Republicans and Democrats quickly followed.

After reportedly facing pressure from his own staff, Trump on Monday said that members of the KKK, neo-Nazis, and white supremacists who engender violence are “criminals and thugs.” However, following that statement, Trump bemoaned the response, saying the media “will never be satisfied.”

A single day’s series of unfortunate events has left Special Counselor to the President, Kellyanne Conway, dealing with the Office of Government Ethics while also denying she retweeted a white nationalist.

The Office of Government Ethics (OGE) has requested the White House investigate and possibly take disciplinary action against Conway after she promoted Ivanka Trump’s clothing line during a recent televised interview on Fox News.

Conway’s interview last week on ‘Fox and Friends’ took place in the wake of Nordstrom dropping Ivanka’s clothing line. President Donald Trump had tweeted that Nordstrom treated his daughter “unfairly.” 

On February 9, Conway used her time during an interview on Fox News to give a “free commercial” to Ivanka’s clothing brand, urging Americans to “Go buy Ivanka’s stuff!“

“I’m going to go get some myself today,” Conway said. “This is just a wonderful line…Go buy it today everybody, you can find it online.”

On Monday, Walter Shaub, director of the OGE, sent a letter to the White House, calling that a “clear violation” of ethics rules. The letter was released Tuesday by Democrats on the House oversight committee.

“Under the present circumstances, there is strong reason to believe that Ms. Conway has violated the Standards of Conduct Act and that disciplinary action is warranted,” Shaub wrote. Specifically, the OGE says that Conway violated statute CFR 2635.702 of the Standards of Conduct, which prohibits employees from using their public position for private gain. 

“An employee shall not use his public office for his own private gain, for the endorsement of any product, service or enterprise, or for the private gain of friends, relatives, or persons with whom the employee is affiliated in a nongovernmental capacity,” the statute reads.

The letter also questions Conway’s decision to give a “free commercial,” while she was “appearing in her official capacity” at the White House.

“As Ms. Conway made these statements, she appeared on screen in a tight frame between the official seal of the White House and the American flag,” the letter states.

Shaub concludes the letter by formally requesting the White House send the findings of their investigation on Conway or any disciplinary action to the OGE by the end of the month.

As if things couldn’t get any worse, early Tuesday morning, Conway’s Twitter account retweeted a post from a self-proclaimed white nationalist account named “Lib Hypocrisy.”

The message from Lib Hypocrisy complemented Conway’s “strength and resiliency in the face of hatred, bigotry, & sexism of the unhinged Left,” and called her an inspiration.

Conway denied retweeting the message, telling Buzzfeed, “I denounce whoever it is.”

However, Conway did not only retweet the message, she also responded with a message to the account, saying, “Love you back,” and wished a happy Valentine’s Day to “the Hapless Haters.”

“I don’t know who had access to my account,” Conway told Buzzfeed before she deleted the tweet, saying, “Everybody makes mistakes.”
