FBI agents raided the Beverly Hills branch of US Private Vaults in March 2021.

  • Deposit box holders whose property was seized by the FBI in a March 2021 raid are suing the bureau.
  • The agency raided US Private Vaults and seized the contents of 1,400 safety deposit boxes.
  • A lawyer involved in the class-action said the FBI raid was the "largest armed robbery in US history."

A lawsuit filed after FBI agents raided a Beverly Hills vault company, seizing more than $ 86 million in cash as well as jewelry and gold from 1,400 safety deposit boxes, claims owners' items have still not been returned and that agents misled a judge to get the warrant.

Agents raided a branch of US Private Vaults in Beverly Hills in March 2021 and seized assets from boxes held by hundreds of people who were not suspected in any crimes, state court papers reported by the Los Angeles Times.

The FBI and the US attorney's office in Los Angeles obtained search and seizure warrants against US Private Vaults by concealing critical details from the judge who approved them, according to the lawsuit.

Robert Frommer, a lawyer with the Institute for Justice which brought the lawsuit, said in the court papers: "The government did not know what was in those boxes, who owned them, or what, if anything, those people had done."

After the raid many box-holders asked the FBI for their property back, Frommer told Insider.

"We brought suit on behalf of seven clients, but we were representing a class of at least 400 people. What we've been trying to show for the past several months is that the government's actions violated the search and seizure protections of the US constitution in the Fourth Amendment," he said.

"The scope of what the FBI did is unprecedented," Frommer added. "This was the largest armed robbery in United States history, and it was committed by the FBI."

After a two-year investigation that began in 2019, leaders of the FBI's Los Angeles office believed boxes at US Private Vaults were being used by criminals to store illicit proceeds.

The FBI requested and obtained warrants to seize US Private Vaults' business property. However, a senior FBI agent recently testified that the warrant omitted a key part of the bureau's plan – to permanently seize everything in every box that contained at least $ 5,000 in cash or goods, the LA Times reported.

Frommer said in an Institute for Justice press release last month: "The FBI lied about its intentions in claiming to only be interested in the property of the business, and not the box holders. Ultimately, the lure of civil forfeiture turned these federal cops into robbers."

Laura Eimiller, an FBI spokeswoman, told the LA Times the warrants were lawfully executed "based on allegations of widespread criminal wrongdoing. At no time was a magistrate misled as to the probable cause used to obtain the warrants."

US Private Vaults has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to launder drug money, and the investigation was continuing, Eimiller added.

The FBI and Department of Justice did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment.

Frommer wants the government to destroy any information or records obtained from customers' boxes in what he said was a violation of the Fourth Amendment.

The Fourth Amendment protects against "unreasonable searches and seizures." It requires the government to get a warrant by showing probable cause explaining why a location needs to be searched and describing specifically what it is seizing.

The plaintiffs in the lawsuit have asked for the FBI raid to be deemed unconstitutional by a district judge, the LA Times reported. Doing so could force the return of assets worth millions of dollars to box holders.

Big Brother All-Stars Recap: Who Got Evicted? And Which Alum Returned? https://briefnews.eu/big-brother-all-stars-recap-who-got-evicted-and-which-alum-returned/ https://briefnews.eu/big-brother-all-stars-recap-who-got-evicted-and-which-alum-returned/#respond Fri, 25 Sep 2020 10:32:37 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/big-brother-all-stars-recap-who-got-evicted-and-which-alum-returned/

Another week has passed in Big Brother‘s latest All-Stars season, and things are starting to feel very Groundhog Day in that house.

Just as “I Got You Babe” would inevitably blare from Bill Murray’s alarm clock at 6 am, the Committee alliance predictably stayed in power for another week, all but ensuring the exit of another underdog. And despite Head of Household Memphis’ initial plan to backdoor David — for… reasons? That Memphis seemed to think made sense? — it was Kevin and Da’Vonne who went up on the block, then remained there after Tyler chose not to use the Power of Veto.

But which houseguest went to join Ian at the jury house? And which Big Brother veteran returned to introduce a new twist? Read on for the highlights of Thursday’s episode:

THE STRATEGY | Following the veto ceremony, Da’Vonne tells Dani and Kevin that she has no interest in campaigning for votes, particularly the votes of Tyler, Cody and Enzo. But her resignation is less because she assumes she’ll get evicted, and more because this All-Stars season has prompted her to stay silent in situations where she would normally speak up — and she’s tired of concealing her real personality for a shot at the prize money.

“I literally hide my voice,” Da’Vonne says through tears in the Diary Room. “The very thing that I’ve encouraged people to do — I come in here and do the opposite. And I feel so bad about it. I’m just tired.” (And even though Dani wants Da’Vonne to stay over Kevin, she seems to understand the Committee won’t go for that plan.)

Elsewhere in the episode’s pre-taped segments: Kevin tries to convince Da’Vonne that Nicole was the flipped vote to evict Ian (but Da’Vonne remains skeptical… and Nicole lies to her face about it once again); Memphis and Enzo concoct a long-term scheme to create two separate Final Three alliances — one with Cody, one with Christmas — both of which are called The Wise Guys; and after realizing that Dani wants Da’Vonne to survive eviction, Christmas enlists David as an ally by offering him safety and confirming that Nicole was last week’s flipped vote.

THE EVICTION | Before the votes are cast, Da’Vonne delivers a speech that can only be described as iconic, reminding her fellow players of her intention to become Big Brother‘s first-ever Black winner. But because this season is the worst, Da’Vonne’s fellow houseguests all listen to her speech with looks of admiration on their faces… before evicting her by a vote of 5-2.

Interestingly, both Nicole and Dani break away from the Committee on this vote and decide to keep Da’Vonne, though it seems like they planned that well before Da’Vonne delivered her persuasive parting words. Then, in Da’Vonne’s post-game interview with Julie Chen Moonves, she finally learns that Nicole indeed voted to evict Ian instead of Tyler last week. From a game standpoint, she says she’s not bothered by the betrayal — but she is frustrated on a personal level, since Nicole knew that Da’Vonne didn’t want to accuse a fellow Black contestant of being a liar on national television, if David was indeed telling the truth.

THE TWIST | As for that long-teased return of a Big Brother legend? It’s Will Kirby, winner of Season 2 and possibly the best to ever play the game. (If only he were moving into the actual house, and not the neighbors’ pad, to show these contestants how it’s done.)

Will informs the houseguests that the upcoming Head of Household and Power of Veto competitions will tempt them to choose between playing for power and playing for prizes. But that’s not the biggest piece of news delivered before the hour’s up: Though the houseguests don’t know it yet, next Thursday’s episode will be a two-hour triple eviction. (!!!) For now, though, we’ll have to wait until Sunday to meet the new Head of Household, which could very well be Memphis if Dani uses her Replay power on him. Dani, I beg of you: Don’t!

Your turn! How do you feel about Da’Vonne’s eviction? And who do you want to win the Head of Household competition? Hit the comments with your thoughts!

  • When Trump asked Kavanaugh how the Supreme Court was, Kavanaugh responded, “Me on the Supreme Court? With my temperament? Are you insane? Nah, nah. They went with that nerd, Merrick Garland. But on the plus side, when I tell people I like beer, they find it charming and not like I’m threatening violence.”
  • He also presented Trump with a calendar where each day was a different beer.

American Horror Story: Apocalypse Recap: What a Lovely Way to Burn (Plus, Which Witch Returned?) https://briefnews.eu/american-horror-story-apocalypse-recap-what-a-lovely-way-to-burn-plus-which-witch-returned/ https://briefnews.eu/american-horror-story-apocalypse-recap-what-a-lovely-way-to-burn-plus-which-witch-returned/#respond Thu, 25 Oct 2018 12:56:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/american-horror-story-apocalypse-recap-what-a-lovely-way-to-burn-plus-which-witch-returned/ Armed with the knowledge that their new leader is, in fact, the Antichrist, the witches turned to a few old friends — and frenemies, naturally — on Wednesday’s episode of American Horror Story: Apocalypse.

Cordelia’s efforts took her to Dinah Stevens’ house, where a cool $ 100,000 earned her a visit with that shadowy slice of man meat known as Papa Legba. But the voodoo daddy wasn’t the only familiar face awaiting Cordelia — it turns out that Nan is now working as Papa’s little mama. “I really like hell,” she told Cordelia. “It’s fun! … I make trouble.” (God, I’ve missed Nan.)

The Supreme’s request was for Papa Legba to open the gates of the underworld long enough for her to lure Michael inside, trapping him forever. Simple enough. But in order for him to betray Satan’s spawn (aka the boss’ kid), he required a hell of a price: each and every one of her girls’ souls. Unwilling to sacrifice those she vowed to protect, Cordelia rejected his offer, returning to Miss Robichaux’s Academy defeated — not to mention, you know, she’s out a hundred grand.

American Horror Story: ApocalypseThe coven’s second (and far more successful) plan involved getting in touch with Joan Collins’ new character, witch-turned-movie star Bubbles McGee. Fortunately, her magical prowess proved far more impressive than her latest acting gig, a Christmas-themed horror movie in which she tells her dying husband, “I f–ked your business partner every year since 1972!” You know, just another classic holiday film for the family.

Anyhoo, Bubbles has the ability to read into a person’s very soul, to “detect the truth in any situation.” (She also, according to Myrtle, has the ability to go down like no other, but I don’t want to talk about that right now… or ever.) Myrtle put her newly acquired human lie detector to the test over dinner with the warlocks, during which Bubbles learned that they murdered John Henry — and the witches were next.

From there, it was only a matter of resurrecting John Henry (via Zoe and Mallory), kidnapping Ms. Mead (via Coco… though she was basically just a distraction), and catching Ariel and Baldwin in the act of plotting to eradicate the witches. What came next was a deeply satisfying triple execution, as the witches burned their enemies alive — and looked damn good while doing it.

Also worth discussing…

* I’m so unsure how I should feel about Coco. I’d like to believe that she’s more than just a “human Weight Watchers,” but I also distinctly recall Madison mocking her uselessness after waking her in Outpost 3. One thing’s for sure: I’m not unsure about how much I love Leslie Grossman’s performance in the role. Brava.

* While we’re talking about strange powers, what the actual fork did Mallory do to stop Coco from choking? (That’s rhetorical, of course. We all saw her unzip Coco’s neck and pull the damn Hostess snack from her throat. But how? And while we’re at it, what is Mallory, anyway?)

* Can we take a moment to appreciate all the faces in the promo for next week’s episode? I mean, Sandra Bernhard? Harriet Harris? Ryan Murphy is really bringing in all the queens this season.

Your thoughts on Wednesday’s Apocalypse? Any new theories as we — gasp! — begin to approach the end of the season? Whatever’s on your mind, drop it in a comment below.

European grid dispute resolved, lost 6 minutes returned to oven clocks https://briefnews.eu/european-grid-dispute-resolved-lost-6-minutes-returned-to-oven-clocks/ https://briefnews.eu/european-grid-dispute-resolved-lost-6-minutes-returned-to-oven-clocks/#respond Mon, 09 Apr 2018 05:18:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/european-grid-dispute-resolved-lost-6-minutes-returned-to-oven-clocks/

If it’s all moving too fast for you, consider upgrading to an oven or microwave that will allow you to stop time entirely. (credit: James LeVeque)

This week, Europe’s electric transmission lobby announced that oven, microwave, and alarm clocks across the continent were no longer six minutes slow. How did they get back the lost time? By resolving a grid dispute between Serbia and Kosovo, and running the continental grid at a slightly higher frequency than normal.

That’s because clocks that are connected to an outlet often tell time by counting the the rate of the electrical current, and on the Continental Europe Power System the clocks expect an average frequency of 50 Hz. But between mid-January 2018 and early March, a grid dispute between Serbia and Kosovo resulted in 113GWh of unmet demand from Kosovo. Since Kosovo is part of the Continental Europe Power System, the unmet demand on the 25-country system led to a system-wide decline in frequency to an average frequency of 49.996 Hz. That meant that clocks were counting down minutes too slowly, and over 3 months, connected clocks around the continent lost six minutes.

Last month, the European Network of Transmission System Operators (ENTSO-E) publicly admonished Serbia and Kosovo for not properly balancing their grids according to previous agreements. “This average frequency deviation, that has never happened in any similar way in the CE [Continental Europe] Power system, must cease,” the group wrote. “ENTSO-E is urging European and national governments and policymakers to take swift action.”

‘Incredible dream’: €1.3mn cello returned to artist after whirlwind social media plea (PHOTOS) https://briefnews.eu/incredible-dream-e1-3mn-cello-returned-to-artist-after-whirlwind-social-media-plea-photos/ https://briefnews.eu/incredible-dream-e1-3mn-cello-returned-to-artist-after-whirlwind-social-media-plea-photos/#respond Sun, 18 Feb 2018 13:00:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/incredible-dream-e1-3mn-cello-returned-to-artist-after-whirlwind-social-media-plea-photos/

A cello estimated to be worth around €1.3 million ($ 1.6 million) has been mysteriously returned to French musician Ophélie Gaillard, after she was mugged at knifepoint in Paris last week.

The cellist, once voted instrumentalist of the year by her peers, had a Francesco Goffriller 1837 cello robbed last Thursday outside her home in the French capital. She was reportedly held up by a person wielding a knife.

Following the plea, the instrument has now astonishingly been returned. On Saturday, Gaillard received an anonymous call informing her that the cello had been placed a in car close to her home.

“I received an anonymous call late in the morning telling me that my cello was in front of my house in a car. I found it in the back seat,” Gaillard said, reported Le Parisien. Bizarrely, the individual who returned the instrument had smashed a window in the vehicle. Gaillard described the outcome as an “incredible dream.”

“Many thanks to everybody, my friends, my colleagues, the police of course, and the journalists, who helped me to recover what is really a part of me, of my soul,” Gaillard posted online.
