Pat Sajak was Wheel-y not a fan of those beloved, now-retired shopping rounds.

On Wednesday’s Wheel of Fortune, the host playfully mocked a contestant who championed the show’s old format, which involved players spending their winnings on a massive array of (sometimes very random) prizes that were presented on a rotating stage.

“The most boring three minutes of television,” Sajak cracked of the retro gimmick.

And he continued his rant at the close of Wednesday’s show (watch above), admitting to co-host Vanna White that he simply does not share many longtime Wheel watchers’ affection for the shopping spree days. “I don’t miss them,” he confessed. “In retrospect [you think], ‘Oh, that was kind of fun,’ but, really, it was this thing going around with the [contestant’s] head in a circle… It was really not exciting television. We like it just the way it is.”

For the record, White agreed with Sajak’s anti-shopping stance, asserting that the show “is so much better now.”

The shopping element — which you can reacquaint yourself with via the vintage clip below — was eliminated from the syndicated version in 1987.

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

SEATTLE—PAX West has overtaken Seattle’s downtown convention center with roughly 4,000 new and in-development games across its giant expo halls. Yet somehow, it’s the kind of ragtag show where titans like Spider-Man, Artifact, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate can stand toe-to-toe with promising indies like Due Process and Risk of Rain 2.

But before we post our usual best-of-the-best PAX wrap-up, we got a day-one opportunity to try two games that are quite unusual owing to their incredibly early status, their behind-closed-doors nature, and their “holy cow, these exist?” flavor: Streets of Rage 4 and Windjammers 2.

Axel to grind

Yes, the two PAX West games with arguably the biggest time gaps between sequels—24 years for both, if you’re counting—shared a press-only hotel suite mere blocks away from the PAX show floor. Both games will be published by the French publisher DotEmu, and both are clearly not ready for public consumption, thanks to missing assets and incomplete polish.

The 25th-anniversary ThinkPad: Every laptop should add some retro appeal https://briefnews.eu/the-25th-anniversary-thinkpad-every-laptop-should-add-some-retro-appeal/ https://briefnews.eu/the-25th-anniversary-thinkpad-every-laptop-should-add-some-retro-appeal/#respond Sun, 01 Apr 2018 13:23:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-25th-anniversary-thinkpad-every-laptop-should-add-some-retro-appeal/

I’m a ThinkPad fanboy. I have been for years.

For me, a ThinkPad brings together several essential elements. I’m sure y’all are bored with me banging on about the TrackPoint—the red nipple situated between the G, H, and B keys that serves as a kind of joystick for moving the mouse cursor—but I continue to believe that they’re better for cursor input than any touchpad ever made. Yes, I’ve used Apple’s touchpads. No, I won’t change my mind. Touchpads are nice for gestures, and so I’m glad that modern ThinkPads come with both, but for core mousing, the TrackPoint is unbeatable.

A 25-year legacy

The black, somewhat-angular, carbon-fibre ThinkPad aesthetic speaks to me. ThinkPads have a timeless elegance to them. While the look has evolved—corners are a little more rounded, overhangs and lips on lids have been eliminated, the latches are gone, and so on—there’s a clear, hereditary link between today’s ThinkPads and those of the IBM era. They look like serious working machines.

Nintendo beating back the competition with this new Switch retro games release https://briefnews.eu/nintendo-beating-back-the-competition-with-this-new-switch-retro-games-release/ https://briefnews.eu/nintendo-beating-back-the-competition-with-this-new-switch-retro-games-release/#respond Sat, 24 Mar 2018 13:42:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nintendo-beating-back-the-competition-with-this-new-switch-retro-games-release/

Fans of old-school gameplay have been pretty well catered on the Nintendo Switch so far.

Having released in 2017, there have been plenty of retro ports launched on the eShop.

There’s also swathes of new indie games being launched on the Switch, some of them taking cues from older titles.

And for fans of the real iconic classic, a big one is set to be launched later in 2018.

According to a report from Impress Game Watch, the original Arcade Archives Punch-Out!! Is being released as a new Nintendo games launch in 2018.

This will be another retro port handled by Hamster, with a release date set for March 30.

The one snag so far is that Punch Out has not been announced for launch in the West yet.

So far we only know that Japan will be getting it as a new eShop release, so fingers crossed something is revealed soon for the UK.

According to the latest reports, Punch-Out!! Will come with several screen options, to mimic the original arcade game.

The 1983 classic used stacked TV monitors, while the Nintendo Switch will boast options for both horizontal and vertical screen setups.

It should be noted that while Punch-Out!! Has not been announced for the UK and US, other Hamster ports have made it to the West.

It was recently revealed that Nintendo are hoping to draw more attention to the eShop’s hidden gems.

In a recent GDC panel, the company announced plans to update the Nintendo Switch eShop.

The aim is to improve how the eShop functions and make it easier to discover new content.

That’s according to Nintendo’s Damon Barker, who said (Gamingbolt): “We have heard the feedback from yourselves, and from fans, loud and clear, about the limitations of the Nintendo eShop.

“I can assure you that steps are being taken over the course of the coming year to improve the functionality in terms of discoverability and visibility, to highlight all of that great content.”

In the meantime, fans can check out the brand new eShop sale.

Kicking off on March 22, the eShop sale features discounts on more than 140 titles.

“The weather is warming up and the action is kicking into gear as Nintendo eShop holds its spring sale, beginning on Thursday 22nd March at 15:00 CET and running until Thursday 5th April at 23:59 local time,” a Nintendo post reads.

“Over 140 titles will be available at discounted prices, across Nintendo Switch, Nintendo 3DS family systems and Wii U. Visit Nintendo eShop once the sale goes live on Thursday for full information on the titles included and the discounts on offer.”

Discounts will be available on the likes of ARMS, LA Noire and Skyrim.

‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ Will Feature a Retro Ship Based on Classic Concept Art https://briefnews.eu/solo-a-star-wars-story-will-feature-a-retro-ship-based-on-classic-concept-art/ https://briefnews.eu/solo-a-star-wars-story-will-feature-a-retro-ship-based-on-classic-concept-art/#respond Thu, 22 Feb 2018 12:07:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/solo-a-star-wars-story-will-feature-a-retro-ship-based-on-classic-concept-art/ Solo ship

During production of Solo: A Star Wars Story, director Ron Howard wasn’t shy about sharing images from the set – including one particular easter egg that was a shout-out to the work of famed Star Wars concept artist Ralph McQuarrie. But now we know Solo will put another concept artist’s work from the original movie to good use in the form of a retro spaceship. Read more about the new (or is it old?) Solo ship below.

New Solo ship

Inverse pointed us to this tweet from a Star Wars fan who noticed a couple of new toy ships from the movie:

We don’t know much about the Arrestor Cruiser (Is it an Imperial ship? Does Han pilot it at any point in the new movie?), but it’s clear it was constructed based on the designs of artist Colin Cantwell, who created the Death Star, X-wing, TIE Fighter, and other ships from the Star Wars universe. Cantwell’s Instagram page is full of cool pieces of concept art, and the most hardcore Star Wars fans may recognize the Arrestor Cruiser as one of Cantwell’s first attempts at visualizing the Star Destroyer.

The creation of the #Stardestroyer – I asked George about the scenes. We had a few words in which he described the scenes. I then asked “Is it bigger than Burbank?” to determine the size of the Imperial Cruiser and the opening scenes of the movie. The hatch concept was developed in terms of the need of actual scenes later in the movie. In the opeing I was describing something WWII-ish of a concept with a gunner in the fuscelage. The ship was designed with a lot of thought on what the viewer would experience related to the massiveness of the ship. This involved thinking of things and creating relationships between all of the ships and their interactions with each other. George and I also discussed several other topics in which I asked qualifying questions. This gave me enough information to start designing the ships. It also gave him the information to continue with his work. I was separate from George for most of that time and worked on the final products alone. I started by creating what had to be in the middle and things were added on and so forth. I basically designed this ship and other ships around the function and the impact of the ship on the viewer. The sequence of function and the emotion and it had to feel like it was already there. When starting on a ship, I never did know what it would look like by the end. PS – those fighters in the concept illustration were the original imperial attack ships. I didn’t create the #TIE until much later. See the other concepts at www.cantwellcollection.com

Cantwell’s most recent post confirms this, and entertainingly answers some fan questions about the original creation of this ship:

Very exciting! #solo will feature my original concept for the #stardestroyer. I absolutely can not wait to see her on the silver screen. See this 1974 concept and others at www.cantwellcollection.com and even purchase autographed copies (if there are any left). #royaltiesplease #arrestorcruiser #starwars #colincantwell Questions I’ve heard so far – What are the radar dishes for? Originally anti-ship / space-to-land lasers, now likely tractor beams. Did I know ahead of time? Nope. News to me Am I getting a payday? Very unlikely unless you all buy prints on my website Why did I make such an ugly ship? Can’t please everyone. The ships talk to me and mostly design themselves. I did help redesign her later on, but this concept still holds a special place in my mind

2019 Mini Cooper Hardtop and Convertible: Retro Refined https://briefnews.eu/2019-mini-cooper-hardtop-and-convertible-retro-refined/ https://briefnews.eu/2019-mini-cooper-hardtop-and-convertible-retro-refined/#respond Tue, 09 Jan 2018 23:49:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/2019-mini-cooper-hardtop-and-convertible-retro-refined/ 2019-Mini-cooper-Hardtop-2-door-and-2019-Mini-Cooper-Convertible-PLACEMENT

Around the turn of the last century, the automotive world experienced a whirlwind of retro cars. One brand after another came up with modern-day re-creations of beloved models of yore, from the Volkswagen New Beetle to the Chevrolet SSR to the Ford Thunderbird, and of course the Chrysler PT Cruiser, which its maker deemed “too cool to categorize.” Aside from the faltering Beetle, only one model has prevailed: BMW’s Mini. In fact, what was a single model has morphed into a thriving brand with a lineup that includes droptops, crossovers, and more—something Fiat has tried to emulate with its 500. Mini’s core, however, remains the hatchback or, as the self-consciously quirky brand prefers to call it, the Hardtop 2 Door. READ MORE ››
