As the evenings get darker and the temperature lower, a night in by the fire isn’t the worst of ideas. So with added comfort, refreshing spa facilities and a gourmet cuisine, Moddershall Oaks has it all for you this winter. The five-star country spa retreat is a cosy 10-suite getaway in the heart of Staffordshire – away from the hustle and bustle of busy life.

The first thing you notice on arrival is the silence, minus a few birds singing.

An instantly relaxing atmosphere to clear your head and think for yourself –for a change.

The staff at reception were extremely welcoming, offering to give us a tour of the facilities and making us feel comfortable.

Shortly after settling in, we made our way to the outdoor vitality pool.

A decision at 6.30pm on a bitter, dark November night I was sure we would regret.

However, sitting in a 35C-heated pool with 5C winds trying to fight back the steam was extremely reinvigorating.

I wouldn’t make a habit of it, though it was an enjoyable experience to start off our stay.

After drying off, we walked down to the spa’s award-winning restaurant, The Lakeside.

The choice of food was excellent – with whole-hearted options from pan-seared sea bass to corn-fed chicken with truffle Dauphinoise potatoes to chargrilled lamb cutlets.

All perfect for a cold, winter’s evening.

Plus if you have more of a sweet tooth, their sticky toffee pudding with banana ice cream is a must have.

It was early alarm the next morning to wake up for our special winter warmer treatments at the spa.

The limited edition treatments run until January and have been specifically designed to revitalise your senses with autumnal and wintery scents.

On top of their regular selections, you have the choice of a peppermint muscle ease massage loaded with marjoram, ginger, clove, spearmint and peppermint.

Or a festive feelings nourishing scrub for your hands or feet – where Christmas fruits and spiced rum will flood the senses.

The treatments were great – and specialist Amanda was very knowledgeable and informative about after care solutions with an array of suggestions to help.

From there, it was a quick dip in the indoor pool with use of the rest of the spa facilities – which feature a steam room, jacuzzi, experience shower and sauna.

All in all it was a short, but enjoyable stay. The food and facilities were very well designed. Their customer service was more than excellent, being attentive, yet not overbearing.

This recently refurbished five-star and all-suite resort, surrounded by mountains and white cliffs overlooking the secluded bay of Pissouri, feels like a resort fit for royalty. In fact, it is.

Prince Harry is said to have visited while Zara and Mike Tindall honeymooned here in 2011.

The resort, largely made up of two-storey suites with traditional shutters on the windows, restored roof tiles and elegant arches, also has a spa, a kids’ club and a creche as well as several eating and drinking options set around a garden of tropical trees with the heady scent of jasmine.

Beyond the fragrant foliage, on the eastern side of the resort facing the coast, was my executive suite with its interior of white wood panels, floor-to-ceiling patio doors, dark wooden beams and handcrafted furniture. Colour came in the form of splashes of blue while the sofa and armchairs gave the place a homely touch.

The tiled bathroom, stocked with luxurious Molten Brown toiletries, was no less lavish with a bathtub you could almost do laps in, alongside a walk-in shower big enough to hold a party in.

Meanwhile the award-winning Hébe Spa offers an array of treatments using Elemis products. After a couple of lengths in the pool, I headed to the gym for a bit of downtime in the Jacuzzi before heading for my treatment.

I opted for a Swedish back massage which was therapeutic and relaxing. I did promise myself to attend one of the many fitness classes, then go for a steam and sauna throughout my stay but the relaxation room proved more tempting. They also have squash and tennis courts and a hair and nail salon for more pampering.

All that relaxing works up an appetite, so it’s good to know there’s plenty of delicious food on offer. Running the culinary show is Michelin-star executive chef, Ioannis Giakoumidis, who ensures that taste buds are tickled with Greek and Cypriot dishes combined with world influences.

Arguably the most famous sight, though, is Aphrodite’s Rock

Options range from a la carte to buffet with the opportunity to dine al fresco. My favourite dish was the spicy grilled shrimp tacos served with red cabbage salad, red onion, coriander and avocado, alongside a spicy mayo dressing at the Cape Aspro seafood restaurant which has recently introduced a sharing concept.

You can taste a variety of the region’s best fish dishes while enjoying views of the sea and white cliffs that are no less delicious. The Apollo Taverna restaurant, more typically Cyrpiot in its appearance, was another hit.

Try the juicy lamb chops served with sautéed asparagus, kefalotiri flakes and garlic oil. If you want to know how to recreate Ioannis’ tasty grilled halloumi or warm Greek salad, you can join one of his surprisingly simple cooking classes running over the summer.

Beyond the resort there is much to lure you to this part of the Med. Explore pretty Pissouri Bay by cycling with Thomas Wegmüller, a Swiss cycling champion, who leads exciting – and gentle – bike tours (bikecyprus.ch).

It’s a great way to discover the region’s natural beauty and interesting architecture as he identified local plants and their uses, taught us a bit of history and shared some of his favourite viewpoints.

Golfers as well as cyclists are also well catered for. Play a round at the prestigious Eléa Estate Golf Club.

Designed by golfing legend Sir Nick Faldo, this 18-hole course has a tropical feel thanks to its planting.

Arguably the most famous sight, though, is Aphrodite’s Rock, a rugged formation out at sea that is believed to be the birthplace of the Greek goddess of love, beauty, pleasure and procreation.

Ecobank was founded in 1985 by business leaders with backing from the Economic Community of West African States, a regional bloc. Every year, Republican members of Congress and their staffers convene for a three-day retreat — away from the hubbub of Washington — to socialize and discuss their party’s agenda.

On Wednesday, GOP lawmakers traveled to this year’s venue: The Greenbrier, a luxury resort in West Virginia, established during the 18th century, that has hosted US presidents and features an underground bunker where Congress was supposed to hideout in the event of a nuclear outbreak during the Cold War.

IRBIL, Iraq (AP) — Iraq’s Kurdish fighters have lost more territory in Iraq, a day after Iraqi forces pushed them out of the disputed oil-rich city of Kirkuk.

In the town of Sinjar, commander of the local Yazidi militia, Masloum Shingali, says the Kurdish forces left before dawn on Tuesday, allowing Shiite-led militiamen who are fighting with Iraqi forces to move into the town.

Shingali says there was no fighting and that the Kurdish forces “left immediately, they didn’t want to fight.”

Town Mayor Mahma Khalil says the Popular Mobilization Forces, a predominantly Shiite militia coalition, is securing Sinjar.

On Monday, Iraqi troops pushed their Kurdish allies in the battle against the Islamic State group out of Kirkuk, seizing oil fields and other facilities amid soaring tensions over last month’s Kurdish vote for independence.

As introductions to tropical islands go, this one is pretty special. 

I’m half expecting James Bond to appear from the open-air designer kitchen in his black tuxedo, martini in hand. And from my vantage point in the deep turquoise infinity pool, there’s a gorgeous view of a crystal clear bay and gently rolling hills covered in dense tropical forest. I’m on Koh Samui, Thailand, and the kitchen belongs to a luxury villa at Samujana, one of 25 privately owned villas in the north east of the island, just a 10-minute drive from the airport. 

Each individually designed villa is available to rent and has a landscaped garden and sea view. The 360-degree view from villa number five, at the top of the hill, is awesome. 

If you’ve got a cool £1million or so to spare you can buy one, but I’m here just for a treat for a few days. 

Arranged from top to bottom on a wooded hillside, a couple of miles north of the beautiful beaches of Chaweng Bay, the villas range in size from three to eight bedrooms and blend seamlessly into the landscape. They come with 50in flat screen TVs, a barbecue area and minibar, a sound system and iPod docks, and some even have private cinemas, a gym, a games room and underwater speakers. 

Koh Samui, Thailand’s second largest island, lies in the Gulf of Thailand off the east coast of the Kra Isthmus, the narrowest part of the Malay Peninsular. Renowned for its palm-fringed beaches, rainforests and laid-back atmosphere, it was once popular with backpackers, who flocked here for the plentiful cheap and cheerful accommodation. Nowadays, it caters to the other end of the market, too, and there are just as many luxury resorts and spas to choose from. 

At just 25km long and 20km wide, it’s small enough to drive around in an hour but big enough to appeal to a range of interests, whether you’re looking for vibrant nightlife, jungle trekking or just chilling out on the beach or around the pool. 

The W Retreat on the island’s northern tip is one of Koh Samui’s ritziest nightspots, with Waltzer-like seating pods floating on an infinity pool. Even if you’re not staying there, it’s a great place to get dressed up for on a Saturday night out, and the teppan grill at the Korean/Japanese inspired restaurant Namu serves wonderful sushi.

Even though you might not want to leave the cocoon of your villa, you can’t go to a tropical island and not take to the sea. Grand Sea Tours is one of the island’s most established boating companies and offers tours to Angthong National Marine Park as well as Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan, two islands which have some of the best dive and snorkelling sites in the Gulf of Thailand. 

The coral reefs (many of which are now under conservation) and crystal clear waters here are teeming with marine life, from angelfish to whale sharks. 

It takes around two hours by speedboat to reach Koh Tau, 68km north of Koh Samui, and after speeding northwards into the Chumphon Archipelago – the northern part of the Gulf of Thailand – we eventually pull into Mango Bay at Koh Tao’s northern tip. Here, we enjoy an hour of snorkelling, followed by a tasty lunch of Thai spiced watermelon soup, fried chicken and vegetable rice at Buddy Restaurant.

Our next stop is Koh Nang Yuan, a small archipelago of three tiny islands connected by a long white sandbar, and even though it’s full of tourists it’s still beautiful, with more fascinating coral reefs to explore. 

The next day, back on Koh Samui, I headed to one of the island’s best-kept secrets, the Jungle Club, reached via a hill that is so steep you’ll have to call ahead for one of their drivers to come and pick you up in a company Land Rover. 

Clinging on to the bars in the back of the vehicle as it makes its way to the top is part of the fun. 

Owned by a Thai-French family, the hillside getaway started life as a small bar in a coconut plantation. It’s now a laid-back luxury hotel with a restaurant serving Thai and French cuisine and a decking area with low-slung seating artfully arranged under curtained canopies. With a phenomenal view over Chaweng Bay, it was a wonderful spot to fully appreciate the beauty of this paradise island.

Prices at Samujana (samujana.com) start at around £500 a night for a three double-bed villa, on a bed and breakfast basis, including transfers. A boat trip to Koh Tau and Koh Nang Yuan with Grand Sea Tours (grandseatours.com) costs 2,200 Thai Baht (£50) per person and includes snorkels, life jackets, lunch and soft drinks. Return Emirates flights (emirates.com) from London Gatwick to Bangkok start from £635. A return from Bangkok to Koh Samui with Bangkok Airways (bangkokair.com) starts from £140. Overnight accommodation at a Crowne Plaza airport hotel with airport parking and hotels (aph.com) starts at £60 room only.

Ten things you must do in Koh Samui

1 Take a boat trip to Angthong National Marine Park, a pristine archipelago of 42 islands in the Gulf of Thailand, with towering limestone mountains, thick jungle and white sand beaches.

2 Browse the market stalls in Fisherman’s Village in Bophut.

3 Visit Big Buddha temple, presided over by a 12-metre high golden statue. 

4 Catch a fire show at Coco Tam’s bar, located on the beach at Fisherman’s Wharf in Fisherman’s Village. 

5 Watch a Muay Thai boxing match at Chaweng Stadium, which hosts some of the island’s biggest events.

6 Try your hand at making Thai cuisine at a Thai cookery lesson. 

7 Spend a day at Silver Beach, one of the island’s loveliest tropical beaches set in a bay on the north east corner of the island.

8 Visit the strange – and very rude – rock formations Ta (grandpa) and Yai (grandma) on Koh Samui’s southern coastline.

9 Take the kids to Lipa Noi Beach. Free of rocks and coral, with fine white sand, it’s the most child friendly beach on the island.

10 Shop for gold jewellery and souvenirs at prices geared towards locals in Nathon Town, Koh Samui’s capital.
