Passengers on an American Airlines plane helped cabin crew restrain a man after he allegedly punched a flight attendant in the back of the head on Wednesday, officials said.

A Department of Justice news release disclosed that passengers aboard the flight to Los Angeles airport helped to apprehend Alexander Tung Cuu Le after he was seen striking the flight attendant.

An FBI affidavit said Le was then moved to another row over safety concerns and had his hands and legs cuffed. Le continuously unbuckled his seatbelt, leading crew members to further restrain him with seatbelt extenders.

The 33-year-old from Westminster in Orange County, California was detained upon landing at LAX and taken into custody by the Federal Bureau of Investigation because the incident occurred in the air.

Le was charged with one count of interference with flight crew members and attendants, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison, the DOJ said.

He appeared in court in Los Angeles on Thursday, but the matter was adjourned until Monday morning for a detention hearing and he remained in custody. 

According to the DoJ release, Le reportedly began to act erratically shortly after departing Los Cabos in Mexico, loitering away from his seat and making gestures toward crew that were implied as threats of violence.

After assaulting the flight attendant, Le fled toward the back of the plane where he was apprehended by several passengers near an exit row, the DoJ stated.

The FBI affidavit stated that the flight attendant seen being struck by Le was left unable to carry out their normal duties and was taken to hospital after the flight landed.

"Additionally, the crew of AA 377 had to focus on restraining Le, which interfered with their duties and reduced their ability to provide service to over 100 passengers," it said.

Even after Le was restrained, the crew was still concerned about his behavior. One flight attendant was "shaking so much that she had difficulty performing her duties" and stated that the flight was "the longest hour and 58 minutes of my life," according to the affidavit.  

American Airlines has banned Le from its flights. 

"The individual involved in this incident will never be allowed to travel with us in the future, and we will work closely with law enforcement in their investigation," AA said in a statement Thursday.

American Airlines did not immediately respond to Insider's request for additional comment about the incident.

The BBC Radio 2 presenter’s sister Frances, who has learning disabilities and diabetes, was admitted to hospital earlier in the week after testing positive for coronavirus. Whiley pulled out of her Radio 2 presenting duties to help her family and speaking to Andrew Marr, explained it has been the “worst week of their lives” as Frances struggled with being given oxygen to help fight the virus.

Asked how Frances was doing, Whiley began: “I don’t know this morning so I’m slightly anxious, I’ve been trying to call my mum and I haven’t heard anything so waking up to having no news is a scary thing.

“It’s been the worst week of our lives without a shadow of a doubt. 24 hours ago we were talking palliative care and yesterday she rallied round and we are seeing her oxygen levels rise.

“At the moment, we’ve got hope. 24 hours ago we didn’t have any hope at all. She is an amazing fighter. She always has been a fighter and I’m just hoping her spirit gets her through.”

“How are you and your parents?” Marr asked with Whiley explaining it had been “awful” for them.

“People with learning disabilities are much more at risk from catching Covid and then sadly dying from Covid, for people who don’t understand that, can you explain why that’s the case?” Marr asked.

Whiley answered: “If you have a learning disability, you have a very complex needs, so I can best explain it talking through my sister.

“So Frances is quite difficult to predict how she will react to things physically and emotionally and that is the same as anyone with a learning disability.

“Going into hospital, the easiest thing and what happens to everyone when you’re admitted with Covid, you’re given oxygen but they couldn’t do that with Frances because she couldn’t tolerate it. She was petrified, she just would not allow anyone to put anything near her face.”

Posting on Twitter after her appearance on The Andrew Marr Show, Whiley told her followers: “Thanks to

@AndrewMarr9 @BBCOne for asking me to talk about my sister and her ongoing battle with Covid.

“I felt I owed it to the LD community to explain the unique challenges they face with this horrific virus & to let them know they are not forgotten or of less value in society.”

She was inundated with support from fans with one writing: “Jo, you’ve given me such joy over the years. I’m so sorry your family is going through this. Much love from the US.”

Another added: “That was an extremely powerful interview. Thank you for being a voice for people with a learning disability. Everything you said was spot on. All love to you, your sister and family – sincerely hope your dear sister recovers soon.”

The Saleen 1 revealed at the L.A. Auto Show is a compact, elegant mid-engine sports car that looks surprisingly finished coming from such a low-volume manufacturer. The car on display is clearly a prototype, but we were surprised at just how good it looks in person slathered in a dynamic orange paint. Even its leather-swathed interior didn’t have the usual glued-together toy-like appearance expected of cars like this.

Details are a bit scarce about the Saleen 1, but here are the basics. It’s roughly the size of the Porsche 718 Cayman and weighs in at 2,685 pounds. Its construction features an aluminum tub and carbon fiber body. Its 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder is apparently a ground-up Saleen creation, boasting 450 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual will be standard and a “paddle shifted automatic” with an unknown number of gears and clutches is optional. Saleen says it’ll go from zero to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds.

That’s pretty much all we know, though.

As for where the Saleen 1 comes from, it is the result of famed performance car maker and tuner Steve Saleen pairing with a Chinese corporation known as Jiangsu Saleen Automotive Technology Group. It’ll provide the capital for the car and will handle its production in China.

Originally, JSATG purchased the Artega GT to be adapted for Saleen’s use, but apparently “updating it was not feasible” so the Saleen 1 was instead designed from scratch. The dimensions are indeed different as are the front and rear fascias (they do look considerably better than the Henrik Fisker-designed Artega GT), but it’s hard not to see the visual similarities between the two cars.

Like any such low-volume sports car, all claims and even its eventual existence have to be taken with a grain of salt. But the Saleen 1 at least looks pretty good, so consider us intrigued.

Melania, 47, will hold a picnic with military families on the South Lawn before watching a fireworks display from the Truman Balcony, according to the White House.

The Fourth of July picnic at the White House is a longstanding tradition dating back to the Carter administration.

Most recently, the Obama’s held the picnic and fireworks with plans for a selection of musical performances.

But bad weather forced the show inside to the East Room – and obviously taking note, Melania has not planned an outdoor show this year.

Clearly keen to ensure everything runs smoothly, the First Lady seems to have decided just to stick to the picnic and fireworks so that nothing gets rained off.

Donald and his wife will be sure to put on a united front during the event, after facing increasing rumours that their marriage is unhappy.

Melania even went so far as to deny the rumours over the weekend after getting sick of speculation.

The First Lady has been caught up in the conflict between her husband and MSNBC Morning Joe co-hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough.

Mika said Melania has the “worst job in the country” being married to Trump and insisted she’s only doing it for the sake of the couple’s son, Barron.

The morning breakfast show host said: “I’m just telling you, Melania’s got the worst job in the country and I don’t think she wants do it a lot longer.

“I think she will do it for as long as she has to for her son, and that’s it.”

But Melania has denied she is unhappy in her marriage, calling the allegations “sad”.
