It’s as if the residents of Salem have been preparing for a global pandemic all along.

As the coronavirus crisis brings television production to a halt, Days of Our Lives, which just months ago was dodging cancellation buzz, is in perhaps the best position of any TV series to weather the not-so-secret storm. The venerable NBC sudser — which has suspended production indefinitely — shoots a staggering eight months in advance. As a result, the soap has enough original episodes banked to last well until fall.

Daytime’s other three soaps, CBS’ The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful and ABC’s General Hospital have considerably less of a cushion. According to sources, Y&R and B&B were four to six weeks ahead when production was suspended this week, which means their respective wells will run dry in early May. GH, meanwhile, had roughly a month’s worth of episodes banked when production was shut down, which takes the soap through the end of April.

The four daytime serials have not set a specific timetable for a resumption of production, although CBS will reportedly reevaluate Y&R and B&B‘s taping status in two weeks.

Can soaps that are consumed on the daily sustain a prolonged outage? That question was first put to the test in 1995, when the months-long, live, daytime coverage of the O.J. Simpson trial pushed sudsers — back then, ABC, CBS and NBC each were home to multiple — off the air and eventually out of many viewers’ mindsets.

The Young and the Restless has announced new details regarding its sendoff to late cast member Kristoff St. John. The farewell arc will air Tuesday, April 23 through Friday, April 26, with a storyline in which his character Neil Winters “passes away unexpectedly,” per the network.

A tribute episode follows on Monday, April 29, with current and former Y&R stars sharing memories of St. John’s 28-year run on the soap.

In the special episodes, Genoa City gathers to remember one of their own when Neil Winters passes away unexpectedly. Neil’s family and friends come from near and far to pay their respects and remember their cherished father, colleague, brother and friend. Neil’s family learns of his passing on Tuesday, April 23 and the story will be featured prominently for the remainder of the week. Shemar Moore reprises his role of Neil’s brother, Malcolm Winters, for two episodes, on April 25 and April 26. Christel Khalil (Lily Ashby) and Eileen Davidson (Ashley Abbott) also return for this storyline. Additionally, actor Stan Shaw, Kristoff’s longtime friend and co-star from Roots: The Next Generations, will appear as the Reverend at Neil’s funeral on April 25.

Y&R EP Anthony Morina previously shared, “Our hope is that this storyline and tribute episode… will honor the legendary character Kristoff helped create, and provide our audience with the opportunity to say a meaningful goodbye to Neil Winters.”

St. John died on Feb. 3 at the age of 52.

In a rare instance of recast uncasting, The Young and the Restless is welcoming back Michelle Stafford to the role of Phyllis, as soap vet Gina Tognoni parts ways with the CBS serial.

Daytime Confidential first reported on the reversal, citing multiple sources. Reps for both Y&R and ABC’s General Hospital (where Stafford has been playing Nina) have yet to respond to TVLine’s request for comment.

Stafford exited the role of Phyllis Summers in August 2013, after a 16-year run in which she went 2-for-10 in Daytime Emmy wins. Seven months later, she debuted on GH as Dr. Silas Clay’s presumed dead wife, Nin, who has since married into the Cassadine family (as I understand it). Daytime Confidential hears that with her GH contract up, Stafford and ABC’s lone soap were unable to reach terms.

Tognoni — best known at the time for her run as One Life to Live’s Kelly Cramer — took over as Y&R‘s Phyllis a year after Stafford’s exit. In her time with the CBS sudser, she netted two Daytime Emmy nods, converting once (in 2017).

In a statement posted to Instagram, Tognoni said, “Five years ago, I was blessed to embrace the incredible character of Phyllis Summers Abbott. I am beyond grateful for the creative experience that Y&R has given to me as well as the amazing relationships I made…. I wish Y&R continued success and everything it richly deserves.”

Sigono’s OPUS: Rocket Of Whispers has you exploring a literal ghost town. After an apocalyptic plague that killed most of Earth’s population, a rocket engineer and a witch try to send the spirits to their final resting place – to space.

Much like The Day We Found Earth, Sigono’s previous game, Rocket of Whispers has a story to tell, and it tells you in a slow, relaxed pace, giving you something to do inbetween story beats. In this case, you’re building a rocket out of scrap metal by exploring a deserted, snowy town and dismantling old machines.

Why would you do that, you ask? Well, apparently this strange world was conducting “space burials” before the plague hit. The spirits would otherwise linger on and disturb the residents – and after the plague there are a lot of spirits.

This is a slow-paced, character-focused game, and sometimes the exploration feels like it is meant to just give you something to do and not just watch the story unfold – which is perfectly fine.

I’ve grown to enjoy this kind of storytelling, and it fits the medium incredibly well (especially on the Switch, which lets me play in bed, right before going to sleep). This slow, melancholy story would probably bore me out of my wits as a book or television series.

However, as a game, the repetition and plodding exploration becomes part of its very structure, part of what it is and how it tells its story. And it does so remarkably well.

The actress is leaving CBS’ The Young and the Restless after six years on the soap opera, she announced Wednesday.

“I love the show (and this genre) so very much, and am so grateful to this amazing crew and cast, especially my beyond wonderful [co-star] Josh Morrow,” she wrote on Twitter.
