Russian President Vladimir Putin denied Russian responsibility for Europe's energy crisis and said the EU can simply turn on the new Nord Stream 2 pipeline if it wants more natural gas from his country.
"The bottom line is, if you have an urge, if it's so hard for you, just lift the sanctions on Nord Stream 2, which is 55 billion cubic metres of gas per year, just push the button and everything will get going," said Putin after the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Uzbekistan on Friday, per Reuters.
He also criticized the "green agenda" — the EU's renewable energy push — which he said started the energy crisis even before the war in Ukraine.
The Nord Stream 2 natural-gas pipeline runs in parallel to Nord Stream 1, a key pipeline that delivers fuel from Russia to Europe. The $ 11 billion Nord Stream 2 pipeline was completed in September, and stands to double Russia's gas flows to Europe. However, Nord Stream 2 has never been operational because Germany shelved the project in February, days before Russia invaded Ukraine.
The EU is staring at an energy crisis this coming winter as Russia supplies about 40% of Europe's natural gas, most of which is transported via pipelines. In 2021, Russia exported about 155 billion cubic meters of the fuel to Europe — more than one-third of which came from the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, according to Reuters.
In early September, Russia state gas giant Gazprom completely turned off supply to Europe via Nord Stream 1. Gazprom and the Kremlin have consistently insisted that the slowing of gas flows was due to technical reasons.
Benchmark European natural-gas future have more than doubled from a year ago.

Members of the House Select Committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riot believe former Secret Service agent Tony Ornato was personally involved in efforts to discredit former Trump White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson's testimony, according to a report from CNN.
Rep. Adam Kinzinger, one of two Republican members of Congress on the committee, told the outlet this week that representatives on the panel think Ornato led the charge in contradicting parts of Hutchinson's public testimony earlier this year while he was still at the agency and additional, unnamed agents then backed his claims.
The longtime Secret Service agent who ran former President Donald Trump's security detail left the agency last month, saying in a statement that he retired in order to pursue a career in the private sector.
Ornato emerged as a key figure in Hutchinson's bombshell testimony before the committee in June.
Hutchinson testified that Ornato told her Trump had tried to grab the steering wheel of the vehicle he was traveling in and lunged at a Secret Service agent while demanding to be taken to the Capitol during the chaos of January 6, 2021, as he said, "I'm the effing president!"
In the aftermath of Hutchinson's testimony, anonymous sources began to reject her version of events in the press. Several media outlets reported that Secret Service agents were willing to testify that Trump did not try to lunge at them or take control of the vehicle on January 6 — though none have done so publicly.
Now, Kinzinger is accusing Ornato of being one of the anonymous culprits behind the backlash.
"I just think it's so important to keep in mind that, through quote, anonymous sources, which we believe to be actually Tony Ornato himself, he pushed back against Cassidy Hutchinson's testimony and said, it's just not true and Tony will testify under oath. And then, of course, has not come in to testify under oath," the Republican told CNN.
Kate Driscoll, a lawyer for Ornato did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment, but told CNN that her client plans to "continue cooperating in the investigations related to the events of January 6."
In response to pushback against Hutchinson's initial testimony, Rep. Liz Cheney, who is the top Republican on the January 6 panel, threw her full support behind Hutchinson and a DC police officer later backed up her claims, testifying that Trump had a "heated exchange" with his security team after they refused to drive him to the Capitol amid the insurrection.
CNN reported this week that investigators have also learned new information about a series of deleted Secret Service test messages regarding the Capitol attack, citing anonymous sources who said it's unclear whether the texts are recoverable.
A spokesperson with the Secret Service pointed Insider to the agency's June 30th statement in response to Hutchinson's testimony:
"As we have done in the past, the United States Secret Service will make individuals with first-hand knowledge of the conversations and interactions referenced by the Committee available for sworn testimony. We are awaiting the opportunity to do so."

]]>A California parole board said on Thursday that Beausoleil, 71, was suitable for release. He is currently serving a life sentence for his participation in the sadistic 1969 murder of musician Gary Hinman, who was tortured for three days before being killed. The convicted killer has previously been denied parole 18 times.
Beausoleil’s attorney insisted that his client was a changed man.
“In my view, [he] hasn’t been dangerous in decades,” Jason Campbell told CNN. He described Beausoleil as a “very conscientious, thoughtful, and introspective person” who “has spent the last 50 years gradually growing and improving himself.”
Not everyone is rooting for Beausoleil’s release, however.
Hinman’s cousin expressed disappointment over the decision.
“I don’t understand why you would let someone out who has committed such a gruesome crime. Do you want him walking down the street next to you? This is a matter of public safety,” Kay Hinman Martley said.
There are still two major hurdles that Beausoleil must overcome before he can secure his release. The Board of Parole Hearings staff still need to review his case. If they sign off on his parole, the final decision rests with California Governor Gavin Newsom.
In the late 1960s, Manson and his followers were responsible for a string of brutal murders as part of a plot to ignite a race war.
Beausoleil, however, was not involved in the group’s notorious murder of pregnant actress Sharon Tate and six others.
Manson died in prison in November 2017.

Meghan Markle, 37, is settling into her life as a Duchess, living in Kensington Palace with her husband Prince Harry, 33.
The couple have been undertaking numerous official outings, but some believe Meghan headed out alone yesterday.
Lisa Petrillo, who is an entertainment journalist for CBS Miami made the spot.
She posted to her Instagram account: “So incredibly enough, walking by @kensingtonroyal – we spotted this beautiful, woman with a familiar air”outside the entrance to the private residence where Harry& Meghan live.
“MEGHAN!? her dog was doing his business. She couldn’t have been sweeter. #princessespickuppooptoo” [sic]
The woman in the image does look like Meghan, with her petite frame and pretty face.
However, a royal expert denies Lisa’s claims. Omid Scobie tweeted: “That’s not the Duchess of Sussex.”
He claimed to have checked with multiple sources.
One clue is the breed of the dog Meghan is walking.
The Duchess owns a beagle, Guy, and recently bought a black labrador with Prince Harry.
However, this dog appears to be a Jack Russell terrier.
One Twitter user also made this spot. They said: “That wasn’t HRH Meghan. The dog isn’t even a beagle or a black retriever, which are the two types of dogs she owns.”
TMZ claims a palace source told them that the photo does not show Meghan Markle.
The woman in the image appears to be wear an all black outfit, with black jeans and trainers, a puffed jacket and a black cap pulled over her eyes.
She is also wearing a backpack and carrying some kind of security card.
Meghan Markle is said to be ‘very close’ with Prince Charles.
InStyle reported via Vanity Fair that Prince Charles, 69, has a “lovely relationship with the duchess.”
According to the source, Meghan and Charles became close after the wedding.
The Prince of Wales was asked to step in to walk Meghan down the aisle after her father Thomas revealed he could not attend the wedding.
A family member told the magazine: “The wedding was a real turning point.”
Meghan Markle was born Rachel Meghan Markle, on August 4, 1981 to parents Doria Ragland and father Thomas Markle.
Her father was previously married to Roslyn Loveless and Meghan has two elder half sibling – sister Samantha Markle and brother Thomas Markle Junior.
Meghan’s first television appearance in the USA was in an episode of the medical drama General Hospital in 2002.
She later moved on to roles in CSI, Without a Trace and Castle along with bit parts in Hollywood films including Get Him to the Greek, Remember Me and Horrible Bosses.
Meghan was also a “briefcase girl” on Deal or No Deal – but her most famous role was as Rachel Zane in legal drama Suits, which launched in 2011.
She was written out in the finale of the seventh series when her character got married, which aired in April 2018 – just before she got married herself.
Meghan Markle’s career in television has gone hand-in-hand with her support for causes close to her heart.
She wrote about the stigma around menstrual health in an article for Time magazine and was a Global Ambassador for World Vision Canada – with whom she travelled to Rwanda for the charity’s Clean Water Campaign.
And her commitment to gender equality has seen her work with the United Nations – receiving a standing ovation in 2015 for her speech to mark International Women’s Day.
In September 2011, she wed film producer Trevor Engelson, who she began dating in 2004.
But the pair divorced two years later in August 2013, citing irreconcilable difference.
She was in a relationship with celebrity chef Cory Vitiello for almost two years, before they broke it off in 2016 but the two remain good friends.
And in June 2016, she met Prince Harry on a blind date set up by a mutual friend.
Their relationship began in October that year and just over one year later, on November 27, 2017, the pair announced their engagement.
They married on May 19, 2018 at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle.
Some have claimed Meghan Markle is the first mixed-race member of the Royal Family.
Historians are still arguing about Queen Charlotte, the wife of King George III.
But Meghan will be the first royal to openly embrace a mixed-race heritage.
She has written about the difficulties of being a biracial actress in Hollywood as she claims she is not black enough for some roles and not white enough for others.
The network teased a quote from Trump ahead of airing his interview with CBS Evening News anchor Jeff Glor, which was broadcast at 6:30 pm Eastern Time on Wednesday. In it, Glor asks Trump if he would hold Putin personally culpable for the alleged election interference.
Trump said yes, although he apparently stopped short of actually blaming Putin for personally ordering an influence op, the way his opponents tend to.
“I would because he’s in charge of the country just like I consider myself to be responsible for things that happen in this country,” Trump said. “So certainly as the leader of the country you would have to hold him responsible.”
He also said he warned Putin against future meddling during their summit in Helsinki, Finland, on Monday.
“I let him know we can’t have this. We’re not going to have it. And that’s the way it’s going to be,” Trump said.
Mainstream US media, Democratic politicians and not a few never-Trump Republicans joined in a chorus of condemnations after Trump did not use the press conference following the summit to publicly attack Putin the way they thought he should have.
The US president was accused of “siding with the KGB over the CIA” and betraying American democracy by not taking the assessment of US intelligence agencies at face value, rather than appearing to give equal weight to Putin’s “powerful” insistence that Russia did not interfere in the 2016 election.
Facing the onslaught of criticism, Trump sought to clarify his remarks by telling reporters that when he said he saw no reason why Russia “would” interfere, he meant to say he saw no reason why it “wouldn’t” be Russia, which led to another media frenzy.
Former CIA Director John Brennan, who was part of the task force that put together the infamous “intelligence community assessment” published in January 2017, said Trump’s conduct at the press conference was “nothing short of treasonous.”
Ex-FBI Director James Comey, who was also part of the task force, tweeted on Tuesday that “All who believe in this country’s values must vote for Democrats this fall.”
The man who oversaw the report, former director of national intelligence James Clapper, famously said last year that Russians are “typically, almost genetically driven to co-opt, penetrate, gain favor, whatever, which is a typical Russian technique.”
Brennan and Clapper resigned at the end of Barack Obama’s presidential term. Comey’s firing in May 2017 prompted the appointment of Special Counsel Robert Mueller to pursue the claim that Trump’s campaign somehow “colluded” with Russia during the 2016 campaign. No evidence of such collusion has been presented since.

The Transformers film franchise doesn’t have a great track record with its female characters. But Bumblebee, the upcoming live-action Transformers spin-off movie, might be the first step toward changing that – and fans have Steven Spielberg to thank for it. Learn about the significant Steven Spielberg Bumblebee contribution below.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura revealed that it was actually Spielberg’s idea for the movie to feature a female protagonist:
“Steven had always had an idea that a young girl and Bumblebee would be a great combination, so we headed in that direction.”
“It’s nice it’s changing,” di Bonaventura said, talking about the industry’s willingness to cast women in lead roles. “When we were debating it, the idea of a young girl seemed to us to be a real change in our direction.” That’s an understatement, especially considering this is a franchise in which Michael Bay’s ogling camera has primarily been concerned with serving an audience of 13-year-old boys. And before you furiously fly to the comments section, yes, I realize there was a young girl in Transformers: The Last Knight, but she never felt like a fully-formed character. Hopefully, Hailee Steinfeld‘s character, Charlie, will be a marked improvement.
Spielberg has been an executive producer on the live-action Transformers movies since the first one came out in 2007, but he reportedly stays out of the way when creative decisions are made. This time, though, it sounds like he piped up with what could be one of the most vital contributions to the franchise in years. Casting Steinfeld in the lead role could help open this film series up to a whole new segment of the population who may not have been interested otherwise. After the disappointing performance of Transformers: The Last Knight (at least compared to other films in the franchise), Paramount would probably love to capture the same crowd who went nuts for recent female-led genre fare like Mad Max: Fury Road, Wonder Woman, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
We’ll leave you with a few more brief plot details from EW that I hadn’t seen published elsewhere:
Bumblebee is alone. He’s on a mission to Earth that goes awry. He runs into trouble with the robot hunters of Sector 7, the U.S. government agency led by John Cena’s Agent Burns. Bumblebee is also being hunted by a Decepticon, the jet from the trailer whose identity is still being kept under wraps.
When Charlie [Steinfeld’s character] finds him, he’s badly wounded and conserving energy by hiding out amid the other rusting hulks in a junkyard. As the bee nest in his wheel well attests, he has been down and out for a while.
Bumblebee hits theaters on December 21, 2018.

“The regime’s history of using chemical weapons against its own people is not in dispute,” said the US State Department, indicating, however, that it was relying on “reports,” being unable to confirm the incident. “Russia ultimately bears responsibility for the brutal targeting of countless Syrians with chemical weapons.”
Earlier on Saturday, rebel-linked activists, including the notorious ‘civil defense’ group White Helmets, accused the Syrian government of carrying out a chemical attack that allegedly affected dozens of civilians in the militant-controlled town of Douma in Eastern Ghouta. The Syrian government, which regards the White Helmets as a foreign-funded terrorist propaganda mouthpiece, rejected these “fabrications.”
“Jaish al-Islam terrorists are repeating the allegations of using chemical weapons in order to accuse the Syrian Arab army, in a blatant attempt to hinder the Army’s advance,” Sana reported, citing an official government source, who added that militants have likely launched this latest propaganda campaign fearing their imminent “dramatic collapse.”
Despite the lack of verified evidence thus far, Washington did not miss a chance to label Moscow as complicit and ‘ultimately’ responsible for the incident, due to its support of President Bashar Assad. Previously, former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson regularly took advantage of well-timed reports of chemical incidents, including in East Ghouta, to push through the US agenda in Syria.
“We continue to receive reports and assess information regarding the alleged attack,” the US Department of State’s representative told Sputnik in a separate statement on Saturday. “Russia’s protection of the Assad regime and failure to stop the use of chemical weapons in Syria calls into question its commitment to resolving the overall crisis.”
In a follow-up comment, the State Department urged the international community to act “immediately” – if the incident is confirmed – and advised Russia to end its “unmitigated” support for the Syrian government.
Reports of chemical attacks, blamed on Damascus, previously surfaced on a number of occasions, and were often backed by a stream of horrific visuals disseminated via social media channels by the White Helmets. Saturday’s incident follows the same pattern, where, as always, the White Helmets found themselves at the right place at the right time to take graphic pictures of the alleged chemical attack victims. Shocking images of dead kids with foaming mouths surfaced immediately after the accusations were made.
“Seventy people suffocated to death and hundreds still suffocating,” Raed al-Saleh, head of the White Helmets, told Al Jazeera, adding that the death toll was expected to rise as many people were in critical condition. According to al-Saleh, the mass casualties are a result of a chlorine gas attack, as well as an “unidentified but stronger gas,” that was allegedly dropped by government planes on Douma on Saturday.
Quite surprisingly, the controversial UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which is usually among the first sources that confirm atrocities by Damascus, could not confirm that chemical weapons had been used, and said casualties might have been a result of fire and toxic smoke following a conventional airstrike. Thus Reuters, while admitting it “could not independently verify reports of a chemical attack,” sought a comment from another obscure organization, the Syrian American Medical Society. A US-based SAMS representative claimed that, while a “chlorine bomb hit Douma hospital,” another nearby building was targeted by a barrel-bomb containing a mix that included “nerve agents.”
The situation in Douma escalated after Jaish al-Islam militants breached all agreements, shelling Damascus and terrorizing civilians to derail evacuations, the Russian Reconciliation Center in Syria said in its daily report, issued before the claims of a chemical attack emerged.
“The Jaish al-Islam militants carried out a number of attacks against the SAA [Syrian Armed Forces] positions and conducted mortar and missile shelling against Damascus,” the Russian Center for Reconciliation in Syria said Saturday. “Over the last 48 hours, militants fired 25 mines and rocket projectiles at the capital and its suburbs. As a result, seven civilians were killed and 42 people injured. Shelling attacks are intensifying.”
Terrorists also continue to use civilians as human shields, the MoD noted, adding that militants are “publicly executing civilians” who support the withdrawal of militants from Douma.
“Jaish al-Islam terrorists breached [the] Douma agreement by attacking with mortar and rocket shells several residential areas of Damascus, claiming lives and injuring dozens of civilians, including women and children,” Sana meanwhile reported.
Previously faced with accusations, Moscow has repeatedly denied involvement in attacking civilians in Syria, and reiterated on a number of occasions that unsubstantiated reports of atrocities and ‘false flag’ chemical incidents always surface at the time when militant factions in Syria are losing ground, and are likely aimed at derailing the reconciliation process in Syria.
