Former first lady Melania Trump worried that her husband was "blowing" the US response to COVID, but he told her she worried too much, a forthcoming book on Donald Trump's presidency reveals.

Melania Trump was "rattled by the coronavirus and convinced that Trump was screwing up," wrote New York Times chief White House correspondent Peter Baker and New Yorker staff writer and CNN global affairs analyst Susan Glasser in their new book "The Divider: Trump in the White House, 2017-2021."

She shared her concerns with former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a Trump ally, in a phone call and sought his help to persuade her husband to take it more seriously, according to CNN's reporting on the book set to publish Tuesday.

"'You're blowing this,' she recalled telling her husband," Baker and Glasser wrote, according to CNN. "'This is serious. It's going to be really bad, and you need to take it more seriously than you're taking it.' He had just dismissed her. 'You worry too much,' she remembered him saying. 'Forget it.'"

As the nation confronted mounting death tolls, Trump mocked mask-wearing and suggested disinfectant injections and sunlight treatments to fight COVID. He held a September Rose Garden ceremony to announce Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court that became known as a superspreader event.

Shortly after the event, he and Melania announced they contracted COVID. Polling at the time showed most Americans thought the president didn't take appropriate precautions for his health or the risk of contracting the virus seriously enough.

In February 2020, Trump acknowledged in an interview with author Bob Woodward for the book "Rage" that the virus was "deadly" and more dangerous than the flu, even while saying publicly it was no worse. A month later, Trump told Woodward, "I wanted to always play it down. I still like playing it down, because I don't want to create a panic."

Days later, he was saying he wanted the nation "opened up and just raring to go by Easter."

Today’s This Morning began with a heated discussion between Phillip Schofield, Holly Willoughby, Nick Ferrari and Michelle Gayle about Rashford’s call for the government to help provide free meals for children who need them over the coming summer holidays. The debate touched upon Ms Coffey’s response to Ashford’s latest tweets this morning in which he asked MPs to imagine what life is like for those children who wake up to empty shelves and no running water.

Following his open letter to MPs in Parliament about providing free school meals to children over the summer holidays which went viral on social media yesterday, Marcus continued with his campaign this morning with a series of tweets.

Speaking about Rashford’s campaign, Nick Ferrari remarked: “Marcus Rashfor we all know, or if your viewers don’t know, is a tremendously skilful football player.

“He is an equally skilful campaigner. He sent out a series of tweets this morning, brilliantly, ‘If you’ve just turned on your shower, think of the children where there’s no power. If you’ve just opened your fridge and you’ve got milk think of the children who don’t have any food.’ I mean brilliant.”

“Absolutely brilliant,” Schofield replied. “To be completely lauded here for this effort, for bringing the issue such massive attention.

“However, you’ve got ‘When you wake up this morning and run your shower, take a second to think about parents who have had their water turned off during lockdown #maketheuturn.’

“Thérèse Coffey, who is the Secretary of State replied ‘Water cannot be disconnected though.’”

“What the hell kind of reaction is that?” Schofield raged.

“4. Recognise children around the country are this morning innocently questioning ‘why?’ 9 out of 30 children in any given classroom are today asking ‘why?’ ‘Why does our future not matter?’ #maketheuturn.”

Responding to his series of tweets, Ms Coffey posted: “Water cannot be disconnected though.”

Ms Coffey has since tweeted Rashford again saying she welcomes his passion to support young children.

She wrote in view of her 23,700 followers: “Hi @MarcusRashford, I welcome your passion for supporting children and the most vulnerable in society – a passion we share.

After Game of Thrones came to a controversial end back in May, fans of the show took comfort in the fact writer George R.R Martin has been working with HBO on some new prequels. The first to be announced would be written by Jane Goldman and Naomi Watts. However, after it was reported the show will no longer be going ahead, author Georger R.R Martin has issued a heartbreaking response to the news on his blog.

Reports the show will no longer be going ahead has been published by Deadline and multiple media outlets.

According to Deadline, showrunner Jane has emailed the cast and crew of the project to let them know the pilot is no longer going ahead.

However, HBO is yet to confirm the reports.

The network told Express.co.uk: “We didn’t confirm to the original Deadline story and, unfortunately, cannot confirm now.”

However, Writer of the books and producer of the TV series George R.R Martin seems to have confirmed the pilot will no longer be going ahead after he opened up about it in a recent blog post.

Should the prequel have gone ahead, fans would have seen the rise of the Starks and Lannisters, in a plot taking place thousands of years before Daenerys Targaryen (played by Emilia Clarke) and Jon Snow (Kit Harington) ever met.

After the news was reported, George wrote: “It goes without saying that I was saddened to hear the show would not be going to series,”

“Jane Goldman is a terrific screenwriter, and I enjoyed brainstorming with her,”

“If television has room enough for multiple CSIs and CHICAGO shows… well, Westeros and Essos are a lot bigger, with thousands of years of history and enough tales and legends and characters for a dozen shows,”

“Heartbreaking as it is to work for years on a pilot, to pour your blood and sweat and tears into it, and have it come to nought, it’s not at all uncommon, I’ve been there myself, more than once.”

Meanwhile, TV Line have reported executives screened the pilot over the summer and were not happy with the results, which is yet to be confirmed by HBO.

It’s believed Jacqueline Boatswain, Jasper Britton, Leah Gayer and Georgina Beedle had all signed up alongside Naomi Watts.

Up to 150 black presenters and high-profile figures signed a letter urging the corporation to overturn its decision to back a complaint against the BBC Breakfast TV host. The BBC’s editorial complaints unit said Ms Munchetty, 44, broke rules while discussing remarks by US president Donald Trump that she said were “embedded in racism”. The group, including actors Sir Lenny Henry and David Harewood, Channel 4 presenter Krishnan Guru-Murthy and Sky journalist Gillian Joseph, called the ruling deeply flawed, illegal and against the spirit of public broadcasting.

The row erupted after the BBC unit issued a formal rebuke, saying Ms Munchetty had shown “bias” by condemning comments made by Mr Trump during a broadcast in July.

At the time, Mr Trump was engaged in a heated dispute with top women Democrats who, he said, should “go back” to their own countries.

Ms Munchetty said: “Every time I have been told, as a woman of colour, to go back to where I came from, that was embedded in racism.

“I’m not accusing anyone of anything here, but you know what certain phrases mean.”

Co-host Dan Walker asked how it made her feel and Ms Munchetty replied: “Furious. Absolutely furious. And I imagine a lot of people in this country will be feeling absolutely furious that a man in that position feels it’s OK to skirt the lines with using language like that.”

Asked if she believed Mr Trump’s use of that language “legitimises other people to use this”, she said: “Yes. Yes.” When Mr Walker suggested it “feels like a thought-out strategy to strengthen his position”, Ms Munchetty added: “And it is not enough to do it just to get attention. He’s in a responsible position.

“Anyway, I’m not here to give my opinion.”

Writer Afua Hirsch called the ruling abhorrent and said: “Racism is not an opinion – it is a fundamental ideology that removes the humanity of people because of their race.

“It’s ludicrous to say it’s fine for a presenter to express her own experience of racism, but she shouldn’t cast judgment on the person being racist. It’s an absurd thing to say.” Yesterday Chancellor Sajid Javid backed Ms Munchetty, tweeting: “C’mon BBC. This is ridiculous. It’s perfectly understandable why she said what she did.” London mayor Sadiq Khan added: “Educating viewers on racist language is something she should be applauded for, not censured.”

But veteran broadcaster Alastair Stewart said: “It becomes increasingly difficult for the public to get their heads round what is happening in our politics if supposedly independent TV reporters keep giving us their views rather than the facts.”

And BBC presenter Andrew Marr said: “Analysis fine, hard questions essential, but our views? Not wanted on voyage.” The BBC’s editorial standards boss, David Jordan, said Ms Munchetty did not cause a problem by responding to “that clearly racist comment”, or speaking about how it felt as a black woman.

But he said she was wrong to go on to discuss Mr Trump himself and his motivations, adding: “That breached our impartiality requirements.”

In a letter to staff, BBC director general Lord Hall said “racism is racism” and Ms Munchetty was “completely within her rights” to speak about Mr Trump’s tweets “which have been widely condemned as racist”.

Ms Munchetty was unavailable for comment last night.

Several late-night hosts began their weeks by addressing the March 15 mosque shootings that left 50 people dead in Christchurch, New Zealand — and they were none too pleased by President Trump’s response to the tragedy.

Trevor Noah, Stephen Colbert and Seth Meyers all criticized Trump on Monday night, particularly after he wrote off the white nationalist movement as “a small group of people that have very, very serious problems.” (An Australian man who was arrested for his role in the shootings has been described as a white supremacist, and he published a manifesto that included alt-right ideology.)

“Of course you don’t see [white nationalism] as a threat. You called for a ban on Muslims coming to the U.S., and you’re trying to build a wall to keep out Mexican asylum seekers,” Meyers said during his newest Closer Look segment. “Asking Trump if he sees white nationalism as a threat is like asking Joe Camel if he sees tobacco as a threat.”

Noah took the criticism a step further during Monday’s taping of The Daily Show, telling his audience in between takes that Trump is “inspired by the same things as the shooter in New Zealand. They’re products of the same white supremacy.”

Though Noah said he doesn’t believe Trump is directly responsible for the shootings in New Zealand, he admitted that the president’s rhetoric does contribute to the likelihood of future violence.

“In many ways, Trump is similar to climate change,” Noah added. “I don’t think you can pin any one storm directly on climate change, but you’ve got to admit that climate change has an effect on increasing the probability of these storms. And I feel like Trump is the same thing. I don’t think he’s the cause of any of these things. But he does, in some way, raise the temperature enough that we’ll see more of these things happening.”

Colbert addressed the Christchurch tragedy in two separate Late Show segments. During his monologue, he played a sound bite of Jacinda Ardern, New Zealand’s prime minister, who asked for Trump to show “sympathy and love for all Muslim communities” — a request that Colbert believes is wishful thinking.

“That’s not really Trump’s brand,” he said. “Trump has trouble showing love for things that are not him, and he has a particularly bad record with Muslims in this regard, so he’s in a bind.”

Later, Colbert became more solemn at his desk, offering heartfelt condolences to those affected by the shootings: “I pray with all my heart that they have the courage to take action that we seem to lack up here in the United States.”

President Donald Trump’s second State of the Union address has been officially rescheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 5, to be held at the U.S. Capitol.

Former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams will deliver the Democratic response, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced on Tuesday.

The State of the Union was originally scheduled for Jan. 29, but Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi notified President Trump earlier this month that because of the partial government shutdown (which at that point was in its 26th day), proper and secure arrangements would not be able to be made in time. Pelosi gave Trump the option of postponing the address until after the shutdown ended, or delivering it in writing. Though Trump reportedly considered a workaround (such as delivering the address from the Oval Office, or at an outdoor venue, campaign rally-style, he ultimately agreed to postpone.

Much Big 4 programming, such as This Is Us, FBI, The Gifted and ABC’s Tuesday slate, was already locked into rerun/preemption mode for this week, so Feb. 5 should be an equal mess.

Thus far, NBC has confirmed that This Is Us‘ next new episode won’t air until Feb. 12, pushing its season finale April 2. (In turn, the midseason drama The Village will claim This Is Us‘ time slot as of April 9, after leading out of the hit drama March 12 through April 2 at 10/9c.) A new New Amsterdam will also be bumped on Feb. 5.

Over on ABC, new episodes of American Housewife and The Kids Are Alright will lead into the SOTU, which will preempt black-ish, Splitting Up Together and The Rookie.

Fox will lead into the SOTU with a Masked Singer rerun.

Other programming moves for Tuesday, Feb. 5 are in the process of being confirmed.
