“Snowden is a fascinating figure because his actions are so controversial. We have no intention of expressing support or an opinion on what he did. The audience will hear what he has to say, can ask tough questions and people can work out their own opinions on the matter,” the company said in a statement issued to the media. The participants, including Snowden, have been approved by the Israeli security officials including the military censor, the Israeli news service Arutz Sheva reported.

 Snowden’s remarks are to be followed by a “response” from Ram Ben-Barak, the former deputy chief of the Israeli intelligence service Mossad. Ben-Barak headed the Keshet division, responsible for gathering intelligence data through electronic means, and held the position of the Intelligence Ministry and Strategic Affairs Ministry director general. Some media reports also suggest that the current Mossad leadership will also be present at the closed event.

Snowden, who worked as a private contractor for the NSA, leaked a trove of documents in 2013 that revealed an extensive surveillance program run by the US intelligence, which involved spying on numerous foreign countries – including US allies. He also notably revealed the NSA was collecting sensitive data on hundreds of millions of people, including the US citizens. Ever since getting stuck in Moscow after his passport got revoked, Snowden has been living in Russia, where he was eventually granted a residence permit.

Some of the documents obtained by Snowden revealed that the NSA and the British intelligence service GCHQ have spied on Israel. This provoked an angry reaction in Tel Aviv, as Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at the time that such things are “unacceptable” and “must not be done” between close allies.

In 2016, another leak showed that the two agencies had been spying on Israeli air force’s operations for at least 18 years, while the British secret services have been spying on Israel’s diplomats, defense firms, and militarary.

Taiwan says it’s a democratic, self-ruled country in East Asia. China disagrees.

Under the “One China” policy, Beijing considers Taiwan to be a province of China, one that will eventually be fully reunified — by force, if necessary. China is adamant about this and frequently seeks to assert its claim to Taiwan on the global stage.

In order to prevent international recognition of Taiwan as a country — which could diminish China’s claim to it — the government even demands countries with which it has diplomatic ties to cut relations with Taiwan.

And now China has set its sights on a new target: foreign airlines.

On April 25, the Civil Aviation Administration (CAA) of China ordered a number of international airlines, including several from the US, to change how Taiwan is described on their websites and promotional material.

The US State Department confirmed to Business Insider airlines received the letter and said it had raised “strong concerns” with Chinese authorities in Beijing about the order.

“Regarding websites, we object to Beijing dictating how U.S. firms, including airlines, organize their websites for ease of consumer use. Chinese companies’ websites operate freely and without political interference in the United States,” a State Department official told Business Insider.

The agency also said it “will consider taking appropriate action if necessary in response to unfair Chinese actions.”

But this is not the first time China has tried to exert its influence over foreign companies. Earlier this year, the hotel chain Marriott was forced to shut down the Chinese version of its website for a week. The fast-fashion retailer, Zara, was ordered to complete a “self-inspection” and turn in a rectification report for listing certain areas as countries. China’s territorial claims to Taiwan have gradually become a confusing and diplomatically-fraught issue for foreign companies, and now air carriers. American Airlines: Taiwan is a sovereign country

American Airlines confirmed to Business Insider it received the letter from China’s Civil Aviation Administration last month.

The airline, which lists Taiwan as a country on its booking drop-down lists, said it is “reviewing” the letter.

Last year American Airlines became a minority shareholder in China’s largest carrier, China Southern.

Delta Airlines: Taiwan is a region

In January this year, Delta Air Lines was censured by China’s Civil Aviation Administration for listing both Taiwan and Tibet as countries on its website. The agency demanded an “immediate and public apology.”

The airline responded by saying it had made a “grave mistake” 

“Delta recognizes the seriousness of this issue and we took immediate steps to resolve it,” the company said in a statement.

“It was an inadvertent error with no business or political intention, and we apologize deeply for the mistake. As one of our most important markets, we are fully committed to China and to our Chinese customers.”

Following the incident the company changed its destination list from being called “Country” to “Country/Region.”

United Airlines: Taiwan is a country

When contacted by Business Insider, United Airlines referred questions to the US State Department.

But Foreign Policy reported the company did in fact receive a letter from China’s aviation agency.

United is a big player on the US-China route with the airline providing one in five of all flights.

Last year when video of aviation officers dragging a passenger off a flight went viral, Chinese state-run media warned the incident could affect local sales.

Parkland shooting survivor David Hogg called for a boycott against companies that advertise on Fox News host Laura Ingraham’s show after she posted a tweet mocking Hogg, saying he “whines” about not being accepted into colleges he applied to.

Hogg responded to her tweet, asking: “Soooo @IngrahamAngle what are your biggest advertisers … Asking for a friend,” and added the hashtag #BoycottIngramAdverts.

He later tweeted a list of companies that he said were advertisers on Ingraham’s show and urged his followers to contact them. 

On Thursday morning, pet-food company Nutrish confirmed on Twitter that it was making plans to pull ads from the TV show. TripAdvisor and Wayfair later followed suit. 

Ingraham apologized to Hogg on Twitter on Thursday afternoon. “I apologize for any upset or hurt my tweet caused him or any of the brave victims of Parkland,” she wrote.

She continued in a second tweet: “For the record, I believe my show was the first to feature David immediately after that horrific shooting and even noted how ‘poised’ he was given the tragedy. As always, he’s welcome to return to the show anytime for a productive discussion.”

On Thursday afternoon, online furniture retailer Wayfair confirmed to Business Insider that it would be pulling ads from the TV show.

“As a company, we support open dialogue and debate on issues. However, the decision of an adult to personally criticize a high school student who has lost his classmates in an unspeakable tragedy is not consistent with our values. We do not plan to continue advertising on this particular program,” a spokesperson for the company told Business Insider.

TripAdvisor confirmed to Business Insider on Thursday that it would be pulling ads from the TV show.

A spokesman for the company said that it does not “condone the inappropriate comments made by this broadcaster.”

He continued: “These statements focused on a high school student, cross the line of decency.”

Here’s the full statement from TripAdvisor:

We believe strongly in the values of our company, especially the one that says, “We are better together.”   

We also believe Americans can disagree while still being agreeable, and that the free exchange of ideas within a community, in a peaceful manner, is the cornerstone of our democracy. 

We do not, however, condone the inappropriate comments made by this broadcaster.  In our view, these statements focused on a high school student, cross the line of decency.  As such, we have made a decision to stop advertising on that program.    

It is important to note that TripAdvisor has a global and diverse customer base, and is an active advertiser on a number of networks including news.  Our media buys target a variety of time slots and audiences. That said, we will continue to monitor where our advertisements appear in the open market to ensure they fit our guidelines.

Police in South Carolina were responding to reports of an attempted prison escape on Wednesday evening, The Post and Courier reported.

It’s happening at the McCormick Correctional Institution in the city of McCormick, about 80 miles west of Columbia. McCormick County Emergency Services said on its Facebook page that the facility “had a situation that occurred and prisoners are trying to escape at this time.”

The South Carolina Department of Corrections confirmed that it was “actively responding” to an ongoing incident at the prison, and describe it as “an isolated incident in one housing unit” at the facility.

The department said “all staff are safe and accounted for.”

It was not immediately clear what events led to the alleged escape attempt.

A riot has reportedly occurred at a state prison in western Kansas. Local law enforcement agencies are on the scene, saying that the situation in the facility is under control.

“Huge riot broken out at Norton Correctional Facility. Buildings are burning and some inmates have gotten weapons,” the Kansas Organization of State Employees tweeted.

The Norton prison housed 848 inmates as of Friday, with another 125 at a satellite unit to the east in Stockton, according to AP. Most of the inmates are either “low-medium security” inmates or minimum-security inmates.

The Kansas Department of Corrections said an “inmate disturbance” occurred at the facility at around 9.30 pm Tuesday evening, adding that no injuries were reported at the time.
