  • Fifteen states are refusing to hand over voter data to President Donald Trump’s Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity.
  • States attorneys general who refused balked at the commission’s original request for information including partial Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses and voting history.
  • The commission is tasked with investigating voter fraud, even though scientific research has shown it is extremely rare.

More than a dozen states still refuse to release detailed voter data to President Donald Trump’s Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity, which is investigating voter fraud.

The commission has stirred controversy from the moment it was established last spring. Critics say Trump is using it to find support for his unsubstantiated claims of widespread voter fraud that cost him the popular vote during the 2016 election. Democrat Hillary Clinton received 2.8 million more votes nationwide than Trump.

All states that have agreed to comply are withholding some details the commission sought and are releasing only information considered public under state law. The commission sent one request in late June and another in July after a court said the data collection could move ahead.

While there have been isolated cases of voter fraud in the US, there is no evidence of it being a widespread problem, as Trump suggests.

Critics argue the commission is stacked with people who favor voting restrictions, rather than those who want to expand access, and that the commission has a predetermined agenda that will result in recommendations making it more difficult for people to register to vote, stay registered and cast ballots.

Its first significant action was to request a wide range of information about all registered voters in every state, including partial Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses and voting history. The commission scaled back its response after stinging criticism.

A tally by Associated Press reporters nationwide shows that 15 states denied the request, raising questions about how useful the information will be. Here is how every state responded:

ALABAMA: Comply

Secretary of State John Merrill, a Republican, said the commission can buy the information at a cost of more than $ 32,000. And it will exclude information such as Social Security and driver’s license numbers.

ALASKA: Comply

Josie Bahnke, director of the state Division of Elections, said the commission paid the $ 21 that is standard for these types of request for publicly available voter data. The information was sent to the commission in September.

ARIZONA: Undecided

Matt Roberts, spokesman for the Secretary of State’s office, said in early October that the office has yet to receive a formal request from the commission for the data.

“In the secretary’s mind, we haven’t responded because we haven’t received anything that remotely resembles a formal public records request, nor the accompanying payment for said voter registration records,” Roberts said. He would not speculate on how the secretary would respond to such a request.

4 business leaders left Trump’s manufacturing council following Charlottesville — here’s how the rest of the council responded https://briefnews.eu/4-business-leaders-left-trumps-manufacturing-council-following-charlottesville-heres-how-the-rest-of-the-council-responded/ https://briefnews.eu/4-business-leaders-left-trumps-manufacturing-council-following-charlottesville-heres-how-the-rest-of-the-council-responded/#respond Tue, 15 Aug 2017 21:51:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/4-business-leaders-left-trumps-manufacturing-council-following-charlottesville-heres-how-the-rest-of-the-council-responded/ Manufacturing Council trump frazier MerckAP

President Donald Trump’s manufacturing council of business leaders lost three of its members Monday, and a fourth on Tuesday, amid fallout from his handling of the white-supremacist protests in Charlottesville, Virginia, over the weekend.

Merck CEO Kenneth Frazier, the only black business leader in the group, was first to resign after Trump initially failed to explicitly denounce white nationalists.

By the time Trump did so in a televised address on Monday, Frazier was the only one to have stepped down from the council because of the weekend’s events.

Later Monday, however, Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank joined Frazier in leaving the council. The sporting-goods CEO said he decided to do so because his company “engages in innovation and sports, not politics.”

That same night, Intel CEO Brian Krzanich released a statement saying he too was stepping down from the council.

“Earlier today, I tendered my resignation from the American Manufacturing Council,” Krzanich wrote. “I resigned to call attention to the serious harm our divided political climate is causing to critical issues, including the serious need to address the decline of American manufacturing. Politics and political agendas have sidelined the important mission of rebuilding America’s manufacturing base.”

Trump responded Tuesday to the three departures with a tweet, saying that he has other leaders to take their spots on the council.

Scott Paul, the president of the Alliance for American Manufacturing, tweeted shortly after Trump’s statement that he will be the fourth executive to leave the council.

“I’m resigning from the Manufacturing Jobs Initiative because it’s the right thing for me to do,” Paul tweeted late Tuesday morning.

Business Insider has contacted the representatives of the original council members to ask for a statement on Frazier’s departure and whether they still planned to participate. The departures are highlighted in red, including Elon Musk who had already left in protest over the White House’s decision to withdraw from the Paris climate accord:

  • Andrew Liveris, Dow Chemical Company, will remain on the council. “I condemn the violence this weekend in Charlottesville, Virginia, and my thoughts and prayers are with those who lost loved ones and with the people of Virginia,” Liveris said in an emailed statement. “In Dow, there is no room for hatred, racism, or bigotry. Dow will continue to work to strengthen the social and economic fabric of the communities where it operates — including supporting policies that help create employment opportunities in manufacturing and rebuild the American workforce.”
  • Bill Brown, Harris Corporation, did not respond to a request for comment.
  • Michael Dell, Dell Technologies, will remain on the council. “While we wouldn’t comment on any member’s personal decision, there’s no change in Dell engaging with the Trump administration and governments around the world to share our perspective on policy issues that affect our company, customers, and employees,” a spokeswoman said.
  • John Ferriola, Nucor Corporation, did not respond to a request for comment.
  • Jeff Fettig, Whirlpool Corporation, will remain on the council. “Whirlpool Corp. believes strongly in an open and inclusive culture that respects people of all races and backgrounds,” the company said in a statement. “Our company has long fostered an environment of acceptance and tolerance in the workplace. The company will continue on the Manufacturing Jobs Initiative to represent our industry, our 15,000 US manufacturing workers, and to provide input and advice on ways to create jobs and strengthen US manufacturing competitiveness.”
  • Ken Frazier, Merck, left the council. “As CEO of Merck, and as a matter of personal conscience, I feel a responsibility to take a stand against intolerance and extremism,” he said in a statement.
  • Alex Gorsky, Johnson & Johnson, will remain on the council. “At Johnson & Johnson we are deeply saddened by the horrific events that occurred in Charlottesville this past weekend. Intolerance, racism, and violence have no place in our society,” Gorsky said in an emailed statement. “Several members have made the decision to leave President Trump’s White House Manufacturing Advisory Council, and I respect their decision as a matter of personal conscience. Given the events of the past few days, I can understand the concerns—even the fear—that some people have expressed. These are difficult days for everyone. In the end, I have concluded that Johnson & Johnson has a responsibility to remain engaged, not as a way to support any specific political agenda, but as a way to represent the values of Our Credo as crucial public policy is discussed and developed.”
  • Greg Hayes, United Technologies Corp., did not respond to a request for comment.
  • Marillyn Hewson, Lockheed Martin, declined to comment.
  • Jeff Immelt, General Electric, will remain on the council. “GE has no tolerance for hate, bigotry or racism, and we strongly condemn the violent extremism in Charlottesville over the weekend,” a GE representative said in a statement. “GE is a proudly inclusive company with employees who represent all religions, nationalities, sexual orientations, and races. With more than 100,000 employees in the United States, it is important for GE to participate in the discussion on how to drive growth and productivity in the US, therefore, Jeff Immelt will remain on the Presidential Committee on American Manufacturing while he is the chairman of GE.”
  • Jim Kamsickas, Dana Inc., did not respond to a request for comment.
  • Brian Krzanich, Intel, announced Monday night he would step down from the council: “I am not a politician,” Krzanich said in a statement. “I am an engineer who has spent most of his career working in factories that manufacture the world’s most advanced devices. Yet, it is clear even to me that nearly every issue is now politicized to the point where significant progress is impossible. Promoting American manufacturing should not be a political issue.”
  • Rich Kyle, The Timken Company, did not respond to a request for comment.
  • Richard Trumka, AFL-CIO, said the group was aware of Frazier’s decision and assessing its role. “The AFL-CIO has unequivocally denounced the actions of bigoted domestic terrorists in Charlottesville and called on the president to do the same,” Trumka said in a statement. “We are aware of the decisions by other members of the President’s Manufacturing Council, which has yet to hold any real meeting*, and are assessing our role. While the AFL-CIO will remain a powerful voice for the freedoms of working people, there are real questions into the effectiveness of this council to deliver real policy that lifts working families.”
  • Denise Morrison, Campbell Soup Company, will remain on the council. “The reprehensible scenes of bigotry and hatred on display in Charlottesville over the weekend have no place in our society,” a company representative said. “Not simply because of the violence, but because the racist ideology at the center of the protests is wrong and must be condemned in no uncertain terms. Campbell has long held the belief that diversity and inclusion are critical to the success of our business and our culture. Our commitment to diversity and inclusion is unwavering, and we will remain active champions for these efforts. We believe it continues to be important for Campbell to have a voice and provide input on matters that will affect our industry, our company and our employees in support of growth. Therefore, Ms. Morrison will remain on the President’s Manufacturing Jobs Initiative.”
  • Dennis Muilenburg, Boeing, will remain on the council.
  • Elon Musk, Tesla, left the council in June after Trump pulled out of the Paris agreement on climate change. He tweeted at the time: “Am departing presidential councils. Climate change is real. Leaving Paris is not good for America or the world.”
  • Doug Oberhelman, formerly Caterpillar, did not respond to a request for comment.
  • Scott Paul, Alliance for American Manufacturing, announced Tuesday that he would step down from the council: “I’m resigning from the Manufacturing Jobs Initiative because it’s the right thing for me to do,” Paul tweeted.
  • Kevin Plank, Under Armour, announced Monday night he would step down from the council: “I joined the American Manufacturing Council because I believed it was important for Under Armour to have an active seat at the table and represent our industry,” Plank said in a statement. “We remain resolute in our potential and ability to improve American manufacturing. However, Under Armour engages in innovation and sports, not politics.”
  • Michael Polk, Newell Brands, did not respond to a request for comment.
  • Mark Sutton, International Paper, will remain on the council. “International Paper strongly condemns the violence that took place in Charlottesville over the weekend — there is no place for hatred, bigotry, and racism in our society,” an International Paper representative said. “We are a company that fosters an inclusive workforce where all employees are valued and treated with dignity and respect. Through our participation on the Manufacturing Jobs Council, we will work to strengthen the social and economic fabric of communities across the country by creating employment opportunities in manufacturing.”
  • Inge Thulin, 3M, did not respond to a request for comment.
  • Wendell Weeks, Corning, did not respond to a request for comment.

Steve Schwarzman, the CEO of the private-equity giant Blackstone and the leader of Trump’s Strategic and Policy Forum — another group of executives from companies such as JPMorgan, PepsiCo, and Walmart — also condemned the events in Charlottesville and said he would remain as head of the forum.

“Bigotry, hatred, and extremism are an affront to core American values and have no place in this country,” Schwarzman said in a statement. “I am deeply saddened and troubled by the tragic events in Charlottesville. My heartfelt condolences go out to the victims and their families. As the president said today, I believe we need to find a path to heal the wounds left by this tragedy and address its underlying causes. Encouraging tolerance and understanding must be a core national imperative, and I will work to further that goal.”

The following CEO’s have also left the council because they are no longer in their jobs:

  • Mark Fields, formerly Ford Motor Company, stepped away from the council after leaving Ford in May. Ford told Business Insider the company no longer had a representative on the manufacturing council.
  • Klaus Kleinfeld, formerly CEO of Arconic, left the company in April. It no longer has a representative on the council.
  • Mario Longhi, formerly US Steel, stepped away from the council after retiring on June 30.
  • Thea Lee, formerly AFL-CIO, departed as the group’s deputy chief of staff. Politico reported Tuesday that she had left the council.

*Editor’s note: The manufacturing group met in February along with a handful of other business executives, but it’s unclear whether Trumka was in attendance.

When NASA posted a job description for its “planetary protection officer” role, the space agency was fishing for candidates with advanced degrees and experience working on interplanetary missions.

What it did not expect, however, was an earnest letter from nine-year-old Jack Davis: a fourth-grader who wrote the space agency asking if he could apply.

The new job opening, which Business Insider first publicized in a story on Tuesday, pays up to $ 187,000 and is for NASA’s one and only full-time planetary protection officer — a role established in 1967.

The role is not only responsible for protecting alien worlds like Europa (an icy, ocean-hiding, and potentially habitable moon of Jupiter) from germs on human-launched spacecraft, but also defending the Earth from contamination by alien microbes.

But enamored by the possibilities, Davis — a self-described “Guardian of the Galaxy” — summoned the courage to write and address a letter to NASA on Thursday.

The full text of Davis’ letter, which NASA posted in a press release on Friday, reads:

“Dear NASA,

My name is Jack Davis and I would like to apply for the planetary protection officer job. I may be nine but I think I would be fit for the job. One of the reasons is my sister says I am an alien. Also, I have seen almost all the space movies and alien movies I can see. I have also seen the show Marvel Agents of Shield and hope to see the movie Men in Black. I am great at vidieo [sic] games. I am young, so I can learn to think like an alien.

Sincerely,
Jack Davis
Guardian of the Galaxy
Fourth Grade”

The space agency could have easily dismissed the letter with a chuckle, but planetary science director Jim Green decided to type, sign, and mail a note back to Davis.

Here’s a screenshot of Green’s letter:

The full text reads:

“Dear Jack,

I hear you are a ‘Guardian of the Galaxy’ and that you’re interested in being a NASA Plantary Protection Officer. That’s great!

Our Plantary Protection Officer position is really cool and is very important work. It’s about protecting Earth from tiny microbes when we bring back samples from the Moon, asteroids and Mars. It’s also about protecting other planets and moons from our germs as we responsibly explore the Solar System.

We are always looking for bright future scientists and engineers to help us, so I hope you will study hard and do well in school. We hope to see you here at NASA one of these days!

Sincerely,
Dr. James L. Green
Director, Planetary Science Division”

The space agency didn’t stop there, however.

Jonathan Rall — NASA’s planetary research director — also rang up Davis “to congratulate him on his interest in the position,” NASA said in the release.

“Although the Planetary Protection Officer position may not be in real-life what the title conjures up, it does play an important role in promoting the responsible exploration of our solar system by preventing microbial contamination of other planets and our own,” NASA added.

NASA is accepting applications at USAJobs.gov from July 13 through August 14.

Here’s how Fox News responded to Trump’s leak of classified information to Russian officials https://briefnews.eu/heres-how-fox-news-responded-to-trumps-leak-of-classified-information-to-russian-officials/ https://briefnews.eu/heres-how-fox-news-responded-to-trumps-leak-of-classified-information-to-russian-officials/#respond Tue, 16 May 2017 13:30:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/heres-how-fox-news-responded-to-trumps-leak-of-classified-information-to-russian-officials/ tucker carlsonFox News

Shock and alarm over reports that President Donald Trump shared classified information with Russian officials was evident Monday from both sides of the political aisle.

And curiously missing during the primetime shows at Fox News was the full-throated defense of Trump — and outrage at other media figures — that has typified the opinion-driven programs on the network.

While pro-Trump right-wing outlets online dismissed the story, the primetime Fox News shows offered Trump a far more muted defense than at other crisis points in his administration, including last week’s decision to fire former FBI Director James Comey.

Instead, multiple shows during Fox News’ primetime lineup did not dedicate significant airtime to the story. But they leaned heavily on the Trump administration’s pushback to the story, which was first reported by The Washington Post.

Fox News host Tucker Carlson dedicated little airtime to the contents of the reports, saying almost nothing about them himself.

White House correspondent John Roberts appeared at the top of the show to discuss the topic for several minutes, focusing less on the contents of the reports than the fact that the White House was irked by the information leaks that led to the public report.

“It’s almost like there are people in Washington who like to undermine the relationship between the US and Russia,” Carlson said, reacting to Roberts’ segment, before launching into a broadside against allegedly biased media outlets.

Fierce Trump loyalist Sean Hannity hardly acknowledged the report, as well, focusing his energies too on the supposedly skewed coverage of Comey’s firing.

The time he did dedicate to the report was spent urging White House staffers to stop leaking, arguing that “no White House can sustain these constant leaks.”

“Enough with the self-serving leaks,” Hannity said.

“If you have the honor and privilege of working in the White House, you should realize you’re there for a reason and one reason only: To serve the American people.”

Trump’s most enthusiastic supporter, though, was “The Five” panelist Jesse Watters, who said the investigation into the leakers “would seem to be the top priority of the Trump White House.” He declared that the leaks were “the story.”

During a relatively lengthy discussion of the report, Watters also dismissed The Washington Post’s reporting. He pointed to a minor correction to a previous story last week about White House press secretary Sean Spicer’s location before an impromptu briefing, as well as a report that deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein threatened to resign from the FBI.

“The Washington Post was wrong about Sean Spicer hiding in the bushes, they were wrong about Rosenstein, the deputy AG resigning,” Watters said. “We also know that Trump has been at war with the intelligence agencies for a very long time. And people have been leaking against him from the beginning.”

Still, Trump’s reported audacity in sharing the information with the Russians created at least one awkward moment for the right-leaning primetime stars.

During a later segment toward the end of “The Five,” host Bob Beckel suggested the Trump administration’s only option to combat resilient pockets of extremists in Afghanistan was to potentially deploy additional American ground troops.

“And share intel. Well, maybe not,” Perino quipped. “No, share intel. That’s always good.”

Ebenhack/AP

Orlando’s police chief says the department regrets releasing the names of officers who were on scene during the Pulse nightclub shooting, according to a report published in The Orlando Sentinel on Friday.

Orlando police chief John Mina has been presenting to police groups across the world to talk about the department’s response to the mass shooting last June, which turned out to be the deadliest such attack in US history.

In the 74-page presentation, which the Sentinal obtained, Mina said that immediately releasing the names of the 11 officers called to the scene was a mistake. He said that this led to officers getting “stalked on Facebook” and flooded with questions about what happened inside.

Other points in the report address survivor and family member criticisms that the police did not breach the club with explosives until several hours after Mateen entered the nightclub and call for better coordination with the fire department.

“Would that have saved any more lives? No. The people who needed care got care,”said Mina. “But the communication would have been better between our two agencies if someone from the fire department would have been in our command post.”
